--Christian Stahl 2 CDs, Spieldauer ca. 127 Minuten, ungekürzte Fassung. Insightful reviews Chris: I was excited about the prospect of reading this book since Stephen Fry has publically advocated it and it looked interesting, I was not disappointed! The tale chronicles the life of the three main characters; Jake, an elderly, abrasive old coot who is rude in the extreme but also loveable. Tiny; Orphaned grandson who stays with Jake and finally Fup; an overweight hen Mallard duck with a personality. The three live together in Jake's modest home drinking moonshine and generally pleasing themselves. A previous reviewer said this was a 'spiritual tale' and I agree with her, there certainly are spiritual undertones to it. I have to admit I did not fully understand what happened to Fup at the end of the book. Perhaps I was not supposed to as Jake often says in the book that there isn't any point is worrying about things we will never understand, jut accept them. If it wasn't for the strange ending this book would have got 5 stars. Brian: I bought and read Fup after the book's title caught my eye at a used bookstore. This is a funny, meander-y, and occasionally bawdy short novel about four unlikely characters: 1) FUP, an obese (thus flightless) female duck who communicates in quacks, hisses, and pecks. She loves to eat, eat, eat! Her name is a play on words: Fup duck / fucked up. 2) JAKE SANTEE, a wily and lucky old gambler (and sex fiend) who spends his retirement decades fine-tuning a "whiskey of immortality" recipe that was given to him, unsolicited, by an Indian dying in an alley. (Most of Fup takes place in the late 1970s on Jake's 820-acre tract in northern California — land won in a poker game.) Jake is Fup's co-caretaker. He names her Fup. 3) Jake's grandson, JONATHAN "TINY" MARKHURST, a brawny fence-building prodigy who, for fun, spends all his free time building magnificent fences. Tiny is Fup's other co-caretaker. He finds her, when she is a baby, at the bottom of a post-hole. Nobody knows how she got there. 4) An evasive wild boar, LOCKJAW, who may or may not be a reincarnated Indian, and who seems to enjoy destroying Tiny's fences. "Lockjaw, so known because he'd never been heard to utter a sound, was a legend in the coastal hills both for his size and the wantonness of his destruction." Before I began reading the book, the dust-jacket text made me afraid that the story would be annoyingly "transcendental" — Fup was first published by a small press in Berkeley in 1983 (uhoh); then, following rave local reviews (uh-oh), Simon & Schuster released it nationwide — but it dodges that bullet, mostly. My hardcover Simon & Schuster edition is 96 pages and includes six illustrations by Norman Green. Jim: The blurb at the back of Fup, a novella by Jim Dodge, says: "Fup is a contemporary fable that inspires an almost evangelical fervour in all those who read it." I've read it – it was one of my Xmas presents – and I'm still waiting for that "evangelical fervour" to hit me. I guess I've missed the boat. It's not that I didn't like the book because I did like the book but I'm not a fervid individual at the best of times so maybe it's simply me. The problem with the book is its ending. The first 106½ pages are fine and I unreservedly recommend them to you. And some people will even more highly recommend the following pages and with an "evangelical fervour" I have no doubt. I can say that I certainly read the remaining pages more than once and with much more care than I read the preceding pages and I was certainly motivated to go back to the start to see if there were any clues that I had missed. Shawn: I knew i'd supply this 4 stars, yet needed to allow it settle with Me a minute sooner than eventually identifying five. a really good written, poignant tale of an previous man's love for his grandson, and a mallard duck who turns into part of their family. i would heard from others that they have been moved to tears through the story, and that i can see why a few may well be. It did not get Me relatively to that point, however the incontrovertible fact that i am nonetheless considering at the tale an afternoon after finishing it means that it had a distinct impact. there is such intensity to the story, and complexity to the characters. the truth that which may be complete in lower than 60 pages is impressive in itself. hugely suggest interpreting this. Ken T: Fup is the paranormal story in regards to the 6' 2" "Tiny", his ninety nine 12 months previous Grandpa, and their duck - Fup. it's a tale approximately love, loss, and whiskey - ol' loss of life Whisper, which Grandpa believes is the foremost to literal immortality. Fup is a enjoyable learn and a humorous read. There are numerous components the place I proceed to snicker out loud. however it can also be a touching story in regards to the bond among a father (or grandfather) and son. stay clear of has created a a bit glossy fairy tale. Set in my very own domestic of rural Northern California it captures either the coarseness and the wonderful thing about the realm and its people. His characterization is spot on, even supposing there's little improvement over the process this brief volume. the tale can be particularly mild on plot and as an alternative looks a car for the presentation of a few really memorable scenes and lines. it's best to learn Fup in a single sitting as Dodge's masterful use of language presents an incredible tone for the paintings that are meant to no longer be interrupted. One caution - i might like to percentage this publication with my younger son, yet I dare no longer due to a great deal of foul language and a few sexual references. whereas they don't detract to the tale - they do in truth healthy it really good - a few readers may well locate it offensive and it truly is no longer intended for younger readers.
