Insightful reviews Andrew Gallina: Want a fun, sweet, and thoroughly enchanting quick read, pick up 'Flush' by Virginia Woolf! It is a true delight from start to finish, and not daunting or heavy at all. In fact, after reading quite a few Woolf novels, this is not only the most accessible, but really the most fun. And Woolf's beautiful writing and descriptions are all here. This would be the perfect place to start for someone new to Woolf. They'll be hooked for sure. In the canon of Woolf's works, 'Flush' seems to be the most overlooked, which is truly a shame, because it is a gem of a novel! Read it, you'll be glad you did! Highly recommended! Josh: Woolf seems to have been very interested in biography: in addition to this one she wrote Roger Fry and a parody of biographical writing (Orlando). She was also friends with Lytton Strachey of Eminent Victorians fame. Flush does a good job of imitating and parodying the biographical style. It doesn't so much enter into the mind of a dog; her Flush is really a human consciousness that is unusually interested in smells and rather lacking in understanding of human affairs. Accepting that it is not particularly dog-like, it is a compelling consciousness to spend time with, and Woolf does a good job of conveying how differently pets and their owners can take a given situation. It is a light book, which is what Woolf set out to write, but it is filled with good humor and pathos. Danielle: Virginia Woolf turns out to have a penchant for writing fictional biographies of unrealistic proportions, as evidenced by means of her moment novel-biography Flush. released 5 years after Orlando in 1933, Flush is the biography of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning's cocker spaniel. Flush turns into Elizabeth's spouse at a tender age, and faithfully lays by way of her couch as she spends her days unwell in her father's home. Flush watches Elizabeth obtain letters that make her eyes shine, and watches because the writer of these letters (Robert Browning) starts to go to daily. Flush turns into jealous of Browning and attempts to chew off his leg a variety of times, an motion that is continuously punished via Elizabeth's disdain, and for which Flush ultimately repents. Flush is even abducted by way of a infamous napper of the pets of rich families, and held in a filthy basement in Whitechapel till Elizabeth can pay the ransom.More than a whimsical tale of a dog, Flush explores problems with classification and patriarchy in a really artistic way. Early within the novel, Flush realizes that "dogs will not be equal, yet different" and after reading himself within the reflect makes a decision he's a member of the aristocracy (he needs to definitely be along with his "prominent yet now not gozzled eyes" and the crimson jar from which he drinks). Flush's epiphany reviews at the position of sophistication in human lifestyles and has specific implications while juxtaposed with Elizabeth's life. After taking a look within the mirror, "he notes with approval the crimson jar from which he drank--such are the privileges of rank; he bent his head quietly to have the chain fastened to his collar--such are its penalties." Like Flush, Elizabeth has the privileges of rank via owning a house and great things, yet she, too, needs to quietly bend her head to have the chain mounted to her collar as a lady in Victorian instances who needs to undergo patriarchy. Elizabeth's father didn't want her to marry and so she grew to become a kind of spinster invalid, a prisoner in her father's home, until eventually she used to be "rescued" by way of Browning.Flush is a uniquely stress-free novel with all of the hilarity that one might anticipate of a biography of a cocker spaniel, and with all of the perception one might count on of Virginia Woolf. even though Woolf has a tendency to have stigmas connected to her of being a grumpy, depressed, and snobby author who finally ends up killing herself, Flush proves to be a funny and enjoyable made from Woolf's experience of humor, cleverness, and her comprehension of social issues. Ivan: one among my very favourite reads this year. this can be a biography of types - and a fiction of sorts. it is the tale of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's cocker spanial Flush. An absolute charmer. this is often a type of volumes which may really be learn in one environment - it truly is possessed of a loose flowing lyric caliber usually absent during this writer's extra cerebral fictions.
