SEPARATELY-PUBLISHED LETTER IN LATIN. In the course of his fi&y-year career as a
microscopist, the range of van Leeuwenhoek's investigations was remarkable; these were communicated
in two series of letters written in Dutch which he wrote to fe$ow scientists, principa$y the fe$ows of the
Royal Society. The first 27 letters were never published separately in his lifetime, and the systematic
publication began with no. 28; these texts were soon fo$owed by Latin translations, through which his
discoveries could be made known to a far wider circle than his compatriots, and in which language they
had their greatest impact. He was the first to recognise the true nature of microorganisms, andgave the
first descriptions of bacteria ... protozoa and rotifers. Although not the first to observe spermatazoa ... he
was the first to suppose them a normal component of animal seminal fluid, and to link them with
fertilization ... He also independently discovered blood corpuscules ... and identified them correctly; he
also investigated blood circulation, capi$aries, and the wa$s of blood-vessels' (Norman 1301).

A striking letter by Bolivar, expressing his thoughts

Manuscript on paper, written on three sides of a bi-folio, gently browned, in
perfectly legible hand; once folded, short tear without los son one fold, else fine.
A magnificent manuscript letter by Simon Bolivar, addressed to Pedro Gual and Pedro
Briceño Mendez, ministers plenipotentiary of Colombia at the Congress of Panama,
exposing his ideas of what the terms of the a!iance should be, for the League of Nations
and the Military League.
Simon Bolivar convened the Congress of Panama in 1826 with the aim of uniting the wi"s of the
newly founded republics in order to form a confederacy of States, on the basis of the former
Viceroyalties; overa", the project was a continental union. The countries present were the Gran
Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia and Guatemala; the United States didn´t send a representative,
although Great Britain did. The meeting was a partial success and the creation of an American
army was decided, as we" as the bi-annual renovation of the Congress, to which other countries
could join. Imperial Brazil was not invited, and its constant threat of Argentina was treated,
Paraguay wasn´t either. Unfortunately, Bolivar´s dream was never accomplished, and the
ambitious plan of an a"iance of nations never reached, thus the ultimate failure of the Congress.
Bolivar´s intentions are we" displayed in this letter, in which he leaves nothing out, laying out his
thoughts and ideas regarding the a"iance:
desproporción del contingente, debemos sufrirla para no encontrarnos solos en esta lucha;

PICTURESQUE ALBUM
OF THE
ISLAND OF CUBA
31.-
[MIALHE, Pierre Toussaint
Frédéric].
ALBUM PINTORESCO DE LA
ISLA DE CUBA. B. MAY Y Cª
(Berlín o Hamburgo, c. 1855).
325 x 240 mm., tela edit., planos con el
título estampado en oro, lomo
restaurado.
Portada cromolitografiada y dorada + 26 litografías tintadas con vistas y escenas + 2 mapas
litografiados y plegados.
Emilio Cueto hace referencia
tanto a la primera como a las
dos ediciones piratas alemanas
en Mialhe’s Colonial Cuba

collaboration between Salvador Dali and the
famous photographer, Philippe Halsman in
the form of a "photographic interview"
about Dali's iconic moustache. A question is
posed on one page, and the following page
contains a photograph of Dali's moustache
"answering" the question. With a foreword
by Dali and an afterward by Halsman
Dali's Mustache is an absurdist humorous book by the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí (1904–
1989) and his %iend, the photographer Philippe Halsman (1906–1979). first edition was
published in October 1954 in New York; slightly modified French editions fo"owed in the 1980s
and 1990s.
The book is subtitled A Photographic Interview. On one page a short question is addressed to
Dalí, which the artist answers at the bottom of the fo"owing page. An additional, corresponding
black and white photograph by Halsman – absurd, ironic or self-ironic portraits of Dalí with
very different uses of his iconic mustache – complements the answer, usua"y with an absurd aspect.
Halsman lived and worked since 1940 – and until his death – in the United States. In 1941 he met
Dalí in New York, who, a&er earlier visits to the States, stayed there with Gala %om 1940 until
1948 and worked there as a writing and painting artist. Halsman and Dalí became %iends and
stayed %iends for the rest of their lives. The idea for the book came %om Richard "Dick" Simon,
one of the founders of Simon & Schuster, when Halsman showed him photographs of Dalí, which
were intended for Life Magazine.
Halsman su'ested the project to Dalí with the remark, that there are many books about artists,
but that it had never been done before – and that would be a very special hommage – that a whole
book was dedicated to "a detail of the artist". Dalí liked this idea. Over the months, a project
cooperation developed, to which both artists contributed ideas and put them into effect
together. The backside of the book shows a Warning! This book is preposterous.
