SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo March 6, 2016 / 6 de Marzo de 2016 Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma 6 de Marzo de 2016 My brothers and sisters in Christ, The Catholic Appeal 2016 starts this weekend. Cardinal O’Malley asks every Catholic to support the mission of the Church of Boston. The Catholic Appeal funds the central operations of the Archdiocese. All the parishes in the Archdiocese depend on the central administration in many ways. For example, the Diocese manages the health care of all our parish employees. They also do everything to make sure parishes are complying with all state laws and regulations. There are a lot of hidden expenses to run a parish. Without their work, it would be a lot harder and a lot more expensive to run a parish. The Catholic Appeal also funds the work and mission of the Cardinal. This includes providing chaplains to hospitals, colleges, and prisons throughout the Archdiocese. It also includes the work of the Vocation Office so that men can become priests for Boston. These positions provide no income and cannot pay for themselves. As members of Christ’s body, we have responsibilities to both our own parish and those outside our parish. Thanks for considering a pledge to the Catholic Appeal. Our assessment and goal is listed later in this bulletin. - Father Michael PLEASE PRAY FOR. . . Agnes, Jan, Terry, Bob, Christine, Lillian, Anthony, Sr. Claire S.M., Anne, Nicholas, Erin, Ann, all the sick & suffering RIP: Barbara Collins, Umberto Mastantuono SATURDAY CONFESSIONS IN LENT Confessions are heard from 9:30 a.m.-3:45 p.m. during the Saturdays of Lent at St. Mary’s. Come, even if it has been a long time… even if you are not sure what to do when you enter the confessional. The priest will help you. Spend some time examining your conscience and let any wounds from the past be healed. STRUGGLING IN YOUR MARRIAGE? ON THE BULLETIN COVER Jesus heals the man born blind Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not also blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains. - John 9:39 - 41 Fourth Sunday of Lent March 6, 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH 2016 CATHOLIC APPEAL GOAL Our assessed goal for this year is $29,881. This is based on a percentage of our annual weekend offertory. Last year, our target was $28, 815 which we surpassed, receiving $30,109. THANK YOU! This is a big help because each parish is required to make up the difference if we do not reach our target. It is also important that we try to get as many different donors as possible. The Cardinal asks everyone to contribute whatever they can. Please consider making a donation to this year’s Catholic Appeal and thank you if you have already done so. ANOINTING OF THE SICK This week we offer Mass with anointing of the sick on Monday, March 7 at 12:10 p.m. Anyone in need of physical healing is encouraged to come forward for the anointing. Anyone who is physically healthy is encouraged to come and pray for the sick. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MOVIE-WAR ROOM Next Saturday evening, the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a free movie night for all couples and families. It will take place in the lower hall at 7:00 p.m. The movie being shown is the 2015 release War Room. The movie tells the story of a family, that the world would judge to be successful, but finds itself in need of being saved. The story shows how the family was saved by prayer. The movie will be shown in English with Spanish subtitles. We invite all families to join us this night. There will be babysitting for young children and popcorn for moviegoers. DOMINICAN SISTERS BAKE SALE This weekend the Dominican Sisters will be at St. Mary’s selling bread, brownies, and apple and blueberry pies. FRANCIS CHILDREN’S CLOTHING DRIVE The children in the After School Program, in wanting to perform the corporal works of mercy, are holding a children’s clothing drive. They have been learning how St. Francis of Assisi gave his own clothes away and asked others to donate their clothes to beggars. The clothing drive is February 22–March 13. They are collecting shoes, coats, outerwear, and clothes for children ages 2-12. They will only accept socks and underwear that is new. You may drop clothing off in the back of the Church or at the Rel. Ed. Building. The clothing will be distributed to parents and children through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and hopefully to a church in Guatemala. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives sight to the blind man. Through grace we are also transformed from not seeing to seeing and then Jesus sends us to help others see and to believe. Through your almsgiving you are giving signs of grace to others; far greater than you think. Know that your donation is multiplied by the offering placed by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box at the church doors. O God, you are the healer of souls and so we pray: When we are blind, may we find your light. When we come to you in prayer, may we experience your love. When we serve the poor, may we know your generosity. Amen. 3 Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma 6 de Marzo de 2016 SAINT CHARLES PARISH IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE The Sanctuary Candle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel is lighted this coming week in memory of Donald Wightman May he rest in peace. CATHOLIC APPEAL ASSESSMENT 2016 Our goal and assessment for this year is $16,645. Last year, we pledged $14,035 which was 65% of our target. Thanks for donating in the past and please consider making whatever donation you can this year. A pledge can be paid in installments throughout the year. Please consider making a donation this year if you have not done so in the past. It is important the St. Charles Parish # 377 is included on your pledge form. CHARLES SMITH DEPARTURE Charles Smith has been helping out in the parish since September, responding to parishioners inquiries and requests for help. He has also been working at the After School Program. This will be his last week. Charles was recently accepted into the Officer Candidate School of the U.S. ARMY. The Army has decided to begin his training by sending him to Fort Benning Georgia on March 14. We wish Charles well and thank him for his work. Charles is also preparing to get married in November 2016. Congratulations on this good news. Charles asks for you to pray for him as he begins this new part of his life. St. Michael the Archangel. Patron of the Armed Forces, pray for him. THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY – POPE FRANCIS Pope Francis has put together a book on Mercy. It is very helpful. For the rest of the year of Mercy, we will be inserting some of his thoughts. The book is written in a question and answer format. Q: W hy are we sinners? A: Because of or iginal sin. It’s something we know from experience. Our humanity is wounded; we know how to distinguish between good and evil, we know what is evil, we try to follow the path of goodness, but we often fall because of our weaknesses and choose evil. This is the consequence of original sin, which we are fully aware of thanks to the Book of Revelation. The story of Adam and Eve, the rebellion against God described in the Book of Genesis, uses a richly imaginative language to explain something that actually happened at the origins of mankind. The Father sacrificed his son and Jesus humbled himself, he allowed himself to be tortured, crucified, and annihilated to redeem us for our sins, to heal that wound. That is why the guilt of our forefathers is celebrated as a felix culpa in the hymn of Exultet, which is sung during the most important celebration of the year, Easter Night: the fault was “happy” because it deserved such a redemption. 4 MASS INTENTIONS Masses intentions scheduled this week are listed below.
