Greetings, SDoL Community
Saludos, Comunidad del D.E.L.,
This is an exciting time of year as we
can soon say good bye to winter and
welcome spring with open arms.
Between the upcoming musicals, spring
athletic teams gearing up to start, and
preparation for year-end activities, we
have a lot to be thankful for this year.
Our students have made tremendous
academic progress from when they
began in August and I owe most of the
credit to our outstanding teaching
staff.
Estamos entrando a un momento
muy emocionante del año cuando le
decimos adiós al invierno y le damos la
bienvenida a la primavera con los
brazos abiertos. Entre la llegada de los
musicales, los equipos atléticos de la
primavera preparándose para comenzar,
y las preparaciones para las actividades
de fin de año, tenemos mucho que
agradecer este año. Nuestros
estudiantes han progresado muchísimo
académicamente desde que comenzaron
en agosto y yo le debo todo el crédito
a nuestro maravilloso personal de
enseñanza.
El Distrito recibió críticas positivas
de nuestro programa de almuerzo
Agarra y Llévate (Grab and Go) luego de
la “Tormenta del 2016.” Fue un esfuerzo
de equipo para ofrecer más de 6.300
almuerzos a familias alrededor del d
istrito mientras las escuelas estuvieron cerradas al final del mes de
enero. En un futuro, cuando las clases sean canceladas por un mínimo de
tres días consecutivos por razones de mal tiempo, nosotros ofreceremos
un programa similar.
Todo el año hemos estado trabajando sin un presupuesto del estado
aprobado, sin embargo, nos las ingeniamos mientras la falta de
presupuesto a nivel del estado tiene un impacto directo en nuestras
operaciones. Tenemos que ser conscientes al planear para el próximo año
que programas y los gastos en general estén dentro de nuestros medios
de presupuesto. Yo les pido a todos los accionistas que sean una voz para

The District received positive feedback
from our Grab and Go lunch program
following the “Blizzard of 2016.” It was
a team effort to provide over 6,300
lunches to families across the district
while the schools were closed in late
January. Moving forward, when classes
are canceled for a minimum of three
consecutive days for weather-related reasons, we will provide a similar
program.
All year we have worked without a state budget in place, and we
continue to be resourceful as the budget strain at the state level has a
direct impact on our operations. We must be mindful as we plan for
next school year that programs and overall expenditures must fall
within our budgetary means. I encourage all stakeholders to be an
advocate for the passing of a fair and equitable state budget. Please
contact your local legislators and allow your voice to be heard!

Meet Our New Assistant Superintendent
Name: Dr.
Carol Powell
Hometown: Pemberton,
Family:
New Jersey
Dog (I call her “my kid”)
Education: Bachelor’s Degree from Drexel University in Commerce & Engineering Sciences; Master’s
Degree from Temple University in Counseling Psychology; and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from
Lehigh University.
Career Path: I started my career working in radio advertising in Philadelphia. I always found myself
counseling and advising clients and knew that there were other opportunities I wanted to pursue. I
changed jobs to work at a crisis center for youth and also volunteered with a college readiness program
that helped high school students prepare for college. Afterwards, I worked in Reading School District
as a high school counselor, and later as the Director of Student Services. I also worked as Assistant
Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in West York Area School District, with Special
Education testing teams in Washington, DC and in Columbia Borough School District.

Hobbies: I used to work in radio and have always enjoyed the power of the “theater of the mind”. I
enjoy radio/audio so much that I went hard core and gave up owning a television in 1990. My favorite
audio programs focus on great storytelling. I enjoy documentaries and have participated in a
makerspace to create audio documentaries. I like to read, and admit that I re-read my favorite
books all the time.
Why SDoL: I have a passion for working in education. I am drawn to creative and innovative districts
that are dedicated to supporting students and their families. SDoL is a perfect fit!
Motto: There is no passion to be found in playing small—in settling for a life that is less than what you
are capable of living.

voluntaria con el programa de preparación universitaria que ayudaba a

trabajé en el Distrito Escolar de Reading como consejera de la escuela superior,
y más tarde como Directora de Servicios al Estudiante. También trabajé como
la Asistente del Superintendente en el Departamento de Currículo e Instrucción
en el Distrito Escolar del Área de West York, con equipos de evaluación de
Educación Especial en Washington, DC y en el Distrito Escolar del Municipio de
Columbia.
Trabajé en la radio y siempre disfruté del poder del “teatro de
la mente”. Yo disfruto la radio/audio tanto que me llevó a desistir de la
televisión en 1990. Mis programas de audio favoritos se enfocan en grandes
cuentos de historias. Disfruto de documentales y he participado en el mercado
de crear audio para documentales. Me encanta leer, y tengo que admitir que
velvo a leer mis libros favoritos todo el tiempo.
Pasatiempos:
Por qué el D.E.L: ITengo la pasión de trabajar en educación. Me siento atraída
a distritos creativos e innovadores que están dedicados a apoyar a los
estudiantes y sus familiares. ¡El D.E.L. es perfecto para mi!

SDoL Night at the Barnstormers
Tuesday, May 31 is SDoL Night at the Barnstormers. All students will receive a
FREE voucher for admittance into the game. Families and community members
can join in the fun by purchasing a ticket. When doing so, please mention the
Lancaster Education Foundation and a portion of the sale will go towards
supporting student initiatives and programs in our schools.
The first 1000 attendees will receive a Barney Ewell Bobblehead Doll. Mr. Ewell,
whom McCaskey’s Stadium is named after, was a member of the first class to
graduate from McCaskey High School (the Class of
1938) and went on to become one of the greatest
sprinters of the 1940s, winning an Olympic Gold
Medal.

en los Barnstormers
El martes, 31 de mayo es la Noche del Distrito Escolar
de Lancaster en los Barnstormers. Todos los estudiantes
recibiran un boleto GRATIS para entrar al juego. Los
familiares y miembros de la comunidad pueden
acompañarnos comprando una entrada. Cuando la
compre, favor mencione la Fundación de Educación de
Lancaster y una porción de la venta será usada para
apoyar las iniciativas de los estudiantes y programas
de nuestras escuelas.
Los primeros 1000 asistentes recibirán un muñeco
"Bobblehead" Barney Ewell. El Sr. Ewell, por el cual

Beauty and
the Beast
An arrogant young prince (Liam Ryan) and his
castle's servants fall under the spell of a wicked
enchantress, who turns him into the hideous
Beast until he learns to love and be loved in
return. The spirited, headstrong village girl Belle
(Sophia Echevarria) enters the Beast's castle
after he imprisons her father Maurice (Hector Torres-Diaz). With the help of his
enchanted servants (Joshua Rivera, Sean McRoberts, Jailyn Sepulveda, Dayanara
Rodriguez and the matronly Mrs. Potts, Landry Krebs), Belle begins to draw the
cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation.
