Sanders and Sharpton hit Sylvia’s

I
t was not that kind of tea party.
Fresh off his resounding New
Hampshire primary win the night before,
Democratic presidential candidate Senator
Bernie Sanders paid a visit to Northern
Manhattan for tea with the Reverend
Al Sharpton at legendary soul food spot
Sylvia’s.
Sanders had requested the February 10
morning meeting, as he continues to seek
support among black voters ahead of the
South Carolina primary, where Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton is leading in polls.
A horde of Sanders supporters jammed
the sidewalk outside of Sylvia’s in freezing
cold to get a glimpse of the Vermont senator,
who was whisked inside the restaurant by
Sharpton after emerging from his car.
After chatting inside over tea, the pair
exited about 30 minutes later.
Sanders, who was also joined by his wife
Jane O’Meara Sanders, waved to the crowd
before quickly departing.
Though the candidate did not speak to
the media or the public, Sharpton later
told reporters that he had pressed Sanders
on numerous issues of importance to black
Americans.
“I asked him very bluntly about Flint, I
asked him very bluntly about affirmative
action, I asked him very bluntly about

He stressed that he had yet to officially
endorse a presidential candidate, but said he
would likely do so after meeting with Hillary
Clinton.
“My concern is that in January of next
year, for the first time in American history, a
black family will be moving out of the White
House,” remarked Sharpton. “I do not want
black concerns to be moved out with them.”
Sanders went directly from his New
Hampshire triumph to Harlem, where Clinton
also has an office, and visited the same
eatery where then-Senator Barack Obama
met Sharpton during his first presidential
campaign – moves intended to demonstrate
the candidate’s commitment to engaging the
black community.
“We must be front and center and not be
marginalized, and Senator Sanders coming
here further makes it clear that we will not be
ignored,” said Sharpton. “Our job is to keep
our agenda front and center.”
State Senator Bill Perkins said that Sanders’
ideals are important to blacks both locally and
nationally.
“This community is struggling for
affordable health care, for living wages,”
Perkins stated. “I think Sanders represents not
only what this neighborhood needs, but what
this country needs.”
The brevity of the visit failed to dampen
the enthusiasm of supporters who turned up
at Sylvia’s.
“I believe in his honesty, and credit him
for telling what I think is the truth about the
political system and the country’s economic
structure,” said Tony, a Harlem resident. “And
I don’t feel that Hillary Clinton can be trusted
after her email scandal.”
Patrick Williams drove from Long Island
just to see Sanders.
“He’s challenging the establishment,” said
Williams.
“Historically, African Americans and poor
people have been written off,” Williams
added. “Sanders seems to be the most genuine
candidate, and sincere about helping the
disenfranchised.”
Steve Greene said he supported Sanders
because he liked the candidate’s ideas on

on’t be a trophy.”
Such was the plain-spoken
warning issued by the stage manager to
audience members at the Richard Rodgers
Theatre this past Mon., Feb. 15th.
It was imperative, he explained, that
all phones be shut off and put away just
before the live performance of the musical
Hamilton.
If not, he warned, zealous usher Mary
Ellen would come around, to claim it for
her basket.
And those phones remained there. They’d
not be returned or resold or repurposed.
She’d keep them – as trophies.
“So,” advised the manager, “don’t be a
trophy.”
His counsel was met with knowing
laughter from the hundreds gathered at the
theater in the hopes that a true trophy would
soon materialize – a gold Grammy.
It was (yet another) historic night for
Hamilton.
On February 15, the hip hop theater
juggernaut became only the eighth musical
to deliver a performance on the Grammy
Awards, and the first to ever present one live

not just the hottest ticket in town,
but a pop culture touchstone.

“This production is magical
and surreal. How often does a
Broadway show hit the
national consciousness
this way, and see the
U.S. President attend
several times?”
Producers

guests to be in the
theater to witness the live
Grammy performance on
Monday, typically a night
off for the production.
The
scene
inside
indicated this was far from a typical Broadway
evening, as a giant camera crane swayed over
the audience, and television crew members
hustled in and out of the theater.

the Grammy telecast switched to
Broadway to present the cast performing
the musical’s rousing opening number,
“Alexander Hamilton.”
And the night was capped off in style as the
musical did nab the Grammy for Best Musical

Development Group, who
purchased Pathmark’s lease out of
bankruptcy.

amid the bankruptcy filing of its parent
company, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea
Company (better known as A&P). It ceased
supermarket operations in 2015.
The joint acquisition of the 80,000-squarefoot site was announced earlier this month.
The site is conveniently situated near the
border of Manhattan and the Bronx, between
Ninth and Tenth Avenues near the University
Heights Bridge.
According to a statement from the
developers, the companies are seeking
to replace the 34,000-square-foot former
Pathmark with a smaller supermarket of
about 20,000 to 25,000 square feet, then split
up the remaining space between a host of
local retailers by the end of the 2016.
The site also includes a 46,000 square-foot
parking lot, a rarity for a shopping center in
the area, with enough room for about 200
cars.
Angelina López, who lives on Nagle
Avenue, said the closing of the Pathmark
was a big loss for residents, as it was the only
supermarket located east of Broadway.
“It’s inconvenient to have to go to C-Town
or Fine Fare,” said López. “There are a lot of
seniors in my building, and it’s tough on them
because it’s a long walk.”
“I think it’s horrible to lose the store,”
remarked Elka Smith. “That was my go-to
supermarket.”
Other locals were unfazed by the store’s
closing.
“I don’t know what people are complaining
about,” said Inwood resident Jamie.
“We’re lucky enough to have a few other
supermarkets in this neighborhood, or people
can shop at bodegas. What’s the big deal?”

hese doctors were on a mission

No sooner had they arrived than they were
dancing to the beats – and listening to them
as well.
An intergenerational Valentine’s event
at Isabella Geriatric Center in Washington
Heights this past Fri., Feb. 12th brought
youngsters and elder residents together
to mark the holiday. Seniors enrolled in
Isabella’s Adult Day Health Care program
were engaged by toddlers in the site’s daycare
for Valentine’s Day-themed activities.
The children, clad in mock doctor headgear
with large pink hearts, used real stethoscopes
to listen to the seniors’ heartbeats, distributed
handmade Valentine cards, and danced and
sang cheerful standards such as “You are My
Sunshine.”

Isabella’s senior programs are stimulated
by interactions between generations, as the
daycare is situated within its Audubon Avenue
eldercare complex.

The Adult Day Health Care hosts adults
with demonstrated medical needs for five
hours a day Mondays through Saturdays.
“We provide physical and occupational
therapy, two meals and social activities,” said
Program Director Patricia Rincón.
Two onsite nurses help seniors manage
their medications and health issues.
“Our goal is to keep them in the community
as long as possible and reduce hospitalization,”
Rincón said.
On Friday, as adult daycare participants
gathered in their activity center, they children
announced their entrance by ringing a bell.
They clapped and danced, bringing the older
adults to their feet.
Later that day, children also shared
Valentine’s activities with members of
Isabella’s “50 Plus Club,” a free program for
adults age 50 and older that offers fitness, life
planning and social activities.
“You can see the mood of the seniors just lift
when the children show up,” remarked Carrie
Depong, Therapeutic Recreation Manager at
Isabella. “Their spirits are really elevated and
it’s great therapy for them.”
While seniors spoke of how they cherished
their time with the children, Daycare Director
Karen Ellefsen noted that the interaction is
just as meaningful to the youngsters.

en el programa de cuidado diurno para adultos de
Isabella participaron en la fiesta junto con niños
pequeños de la guardería del lugar en actividades
con temática del Día de San Valentín.
Los niños, quienes vestían gorros médico
simulados con grandes corazones de color rosa,
utilizaron estetoscopios reales para escuchar los
latidos cardíacos de los ancianos, distribuyeron
tarjetas de San Valentín hechas a mano y
bailaron y cantaron alegres estándares tales
como “You are My Sunshine”.

R
emove Rikers.
During her State of the City address
last week, Mark-Viverito revealed a sweeping
set of proposals designed to overhaul the
city’s criminal justice system, and announced
her desire to close the jail complex Rikers
Island, which has become a lightning rod for
criticism in recent years.
“For too long, Rikers has stood not for
more justice, but for revenge,” said MarkViverito. “We must explore how we can get
the population of Rikers to be so small that the
dream of shutting it down becomes a reality.”
Mark-Viverito delivered her address on
February 11 at the Samuel Gompers High
School campus in the South Bronx.
Pointing out that only 16 percent of those
who await trial on Rikers Island ever get
sentenced to prison time, Mark-Viverito
advocated for an expansion of community
courts and finding alternatives to pre-trial
incarceration.
She invoked the story of Kalief Browder,
a Bronx teenager who sat at Rikers awaiting
trial for three years, including nearly two in
solitary confinement, after being accused of
stealing a backpack. Though the charges were
dropped and Browder released, he committed
suicide two years after leaving Rikers.
“There are certainly other Kaliefs out there
― young people who have left Rikers so
damaged by their interaction with the system
that they reoffend, relapse, or worse,” said
Mark-Viverito.
The Speaker said she would create an
Inspector General for the Department of
Correction, a role that would be modeled after
the Police Department’s Inspector General
position that the City Council established in
2013.
Mark-Viverito, who in late January unveiled
a bill that could wipe out outstanding warrants
for low-level offenses, also said she would
enlist former state Chief Judge Jonathan
Lippman, who was in the audience, to lead a
commission on criminal justice reform.
“It’s time to reimagine our entire criminal
justice system,” she said.

The UC’s mission is to become “the” definitive, transformative and
community-based force impacting the arts, culture, business and New York
City’s overall perception of Upper Manhattan. Its objective is to reset, reboot
and positively redefine Uptown’s artistic, political, cultural and business
spheres via the online space as well the collective’s initiatives and functions.
Under the Council’s recent legislation,
known as the Criminal Justice Reform Act,
those who commit a low-level, nonviolent
crime would likely receive only a civil
penalty for the violation, with no warrant,
criminal record, or possibility of a night in
jail.
There are currently 1.5 million active
summons on the city’s books, said MarkViverito.
Referencing the various police precincts in
attendance, Mark-Viverito stressed that her
quest for reform was not intended to hamper
the police.
“Our support of the NYPD and efforts to
reform the criminal justice system are not
mutually exclusive,” she stated.
To engage young people in city government,
Mark-Viverito said the Council will fund civic
engagement programs and sponsor voter
registration drives in city high schools, with
the goal of registering 10,000 students to vote.
Citing that New York State ranked 49th
in the nation in voter turnout for the 2014
elections, Mark-Viverito said the Council
would also work to create a smartphone app
and online portal so New Yorkers can find
their polling site and election info more easily.
“We are going to bring democracy right to
your fingertips,” she said.
The Speaker referenced the current
presidential election and said that it had taken
a toll on immigrants.
“On the campaign trail, immigrants
have been denigrated, humiliated, and
dehumanized,” said Mark-Viverito.
“New York is proud to be a sanctuary city,”
she added. “We’re proud that IDNYC is the
most successful municipal ID In the country.”
Mark-Viverito explained that the city must
still do more to assist residents who do not
use English as their primary language. She
announced that the City Council will pass
legislation requiring city agencies to provide
translation services in the top six languages
their clients speak, and also ensure that the
city’s emergency push notifications come in
multiple languages.
“English proficiency should never be an
obstacle to accessing city services,” she
remarked.
The Speaker’s IDNYC reference was one
of the few times Mark-Viverito’s speech
dovetailed with Mayor Bill de Blasio’s State
of the City address, delivered one week prior.

hey’re calling BCB out.
Tenants at a pair of Harlem apartment
buildings are up in arms over their landlord,
who they say is forcing them to live in
dangerous conditions.
Residents of 3147 and 3149 Broadway insist
that landlord BCB Property Management is
gut-renovating apartments while neglecting
basic repairs, in attempt to harass them out of
their homes and convert their apartments into
luxury units.
“We haven’t had gas in the building since
September,” said David Hanzal, who has lived
at 3149 Broadway for the past 10 years. “It’s
ridiculous.”
Residents from both buildings report that
passageways are littered with
construction materials and debris.
“You can’t even walk through
the hallways,” Hanzal said.
“And there are workers mixing
hazardous chemicals right out in
the hall — the smell permeates the
apartments.”
Robert Sabin, a bassist who
gives music lessons in his
apartment at 3149 Broadway, said
he was recently forced to cut a
session short because a client was
overwhelmed by chemical and
paint fumes.
“This has to be a city for all
New Yorkers,” said Public
Advocate Letitia James.
“The person became ill because of the smell
and had to leave,” said Sabin.
The ceiling of Hanzal’s neighbor, Erasmo
Guerrero, has been collapsing due to damage
from construction in the unit above.
Guerrero, who has covered all of his
furniture with plastic garbage bags to protect
it from water damage, said he can no longer
sleep in the apartment because of the dust.
“I’m constantly sneezing and coughing,”
he said.
Strips of tape are now being used by
Guerrero to help keep his ceiling in place.
“This landlord is using construction as a
weapon to harass tenants out of their homes,”
said Councilmember Mark Levine. “It’s
completely unacceptable, and I urge city

Hanzal said that nearly half of his building’s
20 units have been under renovation since
BCB purchased the property in November
2014.
“It’s basically a construction zone,” Hanzal
remarked.
“You notice the dust as soon as you walk in
the building,” he said. “You can feel it.”
Tenants rallied in front of the buildings in
late January to call attention to their situation,
and were joined by elected officials, who
accused BCB of tormenting residents out of
their homes so units could be converted to
market rate.
“This predatory and unethical behavior
is an affront to the basic human rights of all
New Yorkers who deserve a safe home,”
stated Public Advocate Letitia James.
City records would seem to support tenant
claims of unsafe conditions on the properties.
Records from the city’s Housing and
Preservation Department (HPD) indicate 81
open violations in units at 3149 Broadway,
including citations for lack of cooking gas
and hot water, exposed electrical wiring and
obstructed fire escapes.
There are 17 open violations for 3147
Broadway, including lack of gas and broken
radiators and carbon monoxide detectors,
according to HPD.

“He’s not your typical politician,” Greene
said. “Bernie lives his principles.”
Ariel of the Upper West Side said he is
eager to assist the Sanders campaign.
“He’s an unusual candidate,” Ariel said.
“I always wished he’d run for president, but
never thought it would happen. I think New
Hampshire is just the start of something big
for him.”
Not everyone outside of Sylvia’s was there
to back Bernie.
Calvin Hunts clearly stood out from the
crowd, as he displayed a sign in support of
Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Concerned about the country’s financial
state, Hunts suggested that businessman
Trump was the only candidate who could
improve the national economy.
Hunts also said the 74-year-old Sanders
was too advanced in age for the presidency.
“He’s too old,” Hunts remarked. “He
reminds me of my grandfather. I want to bring
him some graham crackers and warm milk.”
Alyson Kennedy, a member of the Socialist
Workers Party who was that group’s candidate
for Vice President during the 2008 election,
said that despite Sanders idealism, he
wouldn’t be able to enact sufficient changes
to help working class people.
“The problem is the capitalist system,”
said Kennedy. “It’s never going to solve the
problems of workers. Bernie Sanders wants
to save capitalism and make it healthier, but

those are just Band-Aids.”
Tyler, a Harlem resident, said he was
intrigued by Sanders’ political message and
would vote for the Vermont senator, but
felt that a Clinton victory was a foregone
conclusion.
“I think the country is looking for a new
direction, and wants to hear the voice of
a woman,” he said. “After we finally had a
black president, people now want to see a
female president.”
In recent weeks, Sanders garnered the
support of several prominent black leaders
— Nina Turner, former Ohio State Senator;
Cornel West, academic and activist; and Ben
Jealous, former President of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP), who spoke as Sanders’

will make sure that our children will prosper,
and not get sent to prison?”

“I see a similar correlation of enthusiasm,”
said Perkins. “Obama tapped into that same
spirit, with not just the black community, but
working families in general who struggle with
issues Sanders articulates in a meaningful
way.”
Perkins said that win or lose, Sanders had
successfully energized a voter base that had
grown cynical of the political system.
“Any time you can do that, it’s like striking
oil,” stated Perkins. “The fate of our nation
rests in the enthusiasm and idealism of young
people. If they lose faith in our system of
government, our future is dead.”

depending on need.
Ellefsen helped develop a curriculum
designed to promote independence, self-
confidence and decision-making, while preparing
for future learning.
She said that the program has capacity for
39 children, and there are about a dozen spots
currently open.
“It’s really unique to have young children on
the same campus as elderly people,” remarked
Ellefsen. “It makes for a really heartwarming
environment.”

inter has arrived with
conviction, and it looks to be
sticking around for a while.
The answer, however, isn’t just to hang out
indoors. There are safe, heathy activities to
take up outside (so long as you’re properly
dressed, of course). And though our homes
and offices can serve as havens from the chill,
drafts and poor insulation can sometimes
keep us from taking full advantage of the
warmth indoors.
Here’s how to stay warm -- inside and out.
Inside your home
When central heating isn’t getting the job
done, look to make the most of the heat it is
providing and give it a boost. Here are some tips:
• Space heaters can help to generate additional
warmth. Use them strategically.
• It’s easier to put on another layer of clothing
than trying to heat a whole room.
• If you have a ceiling fan, turn it on low
to rotate clockwise. This pushes warm air
down to where you are.
• Block drafts with a rolled up towel or
a similar object such as a pool noodle
wrapped in cloth.
• Replace lighter curtains with special
thermal curtains.
• Put on some music and move around to turn
up your body’s thermostat.

• Consider baking or roasting to get double
value from your oven. Then invite friends
over to add their body heat to your place.
Outside your Home
• Whether you’re dashing to the store or the
subway, or working out, keep these tips in
mind.
• Stay dry. Whether you’re sweating in a big
parka or unsuccessfully negotiating icy
puddles, wetness makes everything worse.
To prevent sweating, dress in layers. The
first layer should be something synthetic
that wicks moisture off your skin. Then wear
something insulating and lightweight over

Broadway for the past 10 years.
Officials reported that the city’s Tenant
Harassment Prevention Task Force performed
an investigation of 3149 Broadway in late
January to gauge what enforcement measures
are needed.
The city has placed that building in HPD’s
Proactive Preservation Initiative, which gives
the agency power to take the landlord to court
for continually neglecting repairs.
When contacted regarding the conditions
in its Harlem properties, BCB Property
Management declined to comment.
The company is owned by Debrah Lee
Charatan, the estranged wife of real estate heir
Robert Durst, who is currently being prosecuted
for murder in California.
At the Harlem rally, Levine said that the
landlord was guilty of employing the same
tactics at other properties.
In 2014, residents of BCB-owned 1059
Union Street in Crown Heights also complained
that the company was driving out tenants with
construction, and had neglected crucial repairs.
Sabin said that city residents sometimes
make it easy for abusive landlords to get away
with driving tenants out.
“I believe that the vast majority of tenants in
New York City, when faced with that type of
situation, they just move,” stated Sabin.

viewers, entertained the Hamilton theater
audience with some humor.
Colbert remarked that the soonest
opportunity he could get online for the indemand show was for “a Sunday matinee in
2018,” which may not have been much of a
stretch, considering box office sales.
The enthusiastic New York crowd
erupted in cheers as the Los Angeles
Grammy feed switched over to the theater
and the cast emerged to sing “Alexander
Hamilton,” an ensemble piece that
showcases the talents of cast members
Leslie Odom Jr., Christopher Jackson,
Phillipa Soo and Daveed Diggs.
When Miranda appeared onstage, he
received an ovation that drowned out one
of his lines.
A few moments following the
performance, Hamilton was revealed by
Seth MacFarlane as the winner for Best
Musical Theater album. The Grammy
telecast then cut back to the theater,
where the cast returned to the stage en
masse.
Miranda rapped his acceptance speech,
thanking his cast, the album producers, his
family, and giving a special shout-out to his
son, Sebastian (see sidebar for full text).
He then handed the trophy to the show’s
Musical Director and Orchestrator Alex
Lacamoire.
“We put our heart and soul into this show
and worked our tails off,” said Lacamoire.
“I’m really thankful that we won.”

These are my favorite people and we’ve been
working really hard for a long time. We’re
really happy.”
Miranda agreed there had been no added
jitters.
“The fun part was taking this thing we do
every night and calibrating it slightly for TV,”
he said.
He said the cast had rehearsed numerous
times that day to get accustomed to having
the crew maneuvering around the stage with
them.
“There’s a camera over here, different
lighting over there,” Miranda remarked.
“The challenge of translating the show to the
viewers at home was fun.”
Moreover, Miranda said that the song-heavy
format of Hamilton allowed listeners to absorb
the entire story, and ensured that listeners of
the soundtrack, which has sold millions in
sales and given Billboard chart competition to
standard rap albums, could fully appreciate the
show even if they couldn’t score a ticket.
“Basically, our cast album delivers our
whole show,” explained Miranda. “It’s a sungthrough show, like Evita or Rent. There’s not a
lot of spoken dialogue.”
He recalled how he first fell in love with
musical theater by obsessing over Broadway
soundtracks as a child.
“I didn’t have money to see Broadway
shows – I memorized cast albums,” Miranda
said.
In the audience, the Hamilton creator’s
proud parents were seen cheering and
beaming with pride.
“Never in our wildest imaginations could
we have predicted what this show would
become,” said mother Luz Towns-Miranda.
“As Lin-Manuel says, ‘What’s happening
has put my dreams to shame.’”
“Every time we think we’ve seen it all
with this show, something else incredible
happens,” remarked his father Luis A.
Miranda Jr. (one of the publishers of The
Manhattan Times and The Bronx Free
Press). “What could possibly top this night
― broadcasting live on the moon?”
Chernow said that while writing his
Alexander Hamilton biography, he felt it
would eventually be developed into a movie
or television series.
“I can’t say I envisioned it becoming a hip
hop musical,” he smiled.
The author marveled at how the show’s
musical style was inspiring rap-loving
youths to learn about the founding fathers.
“I think Lin-Manuel Miranda has done
more to stimulate an interest in American
history than anyone I know,” Chernow
stated.
“By telling Hamilton’s story, you get an
eyewitness account of a lot of important
events in the founding of our country,”
observed Miranda. “We’ve made these
people come to life for a new generation,
and that’s exciting.”

plan, stating that the Council would develop
a Neighborhood Commitment Plan to
accompany rezoning proposals, and study
how tax incentives could strengthen small
businesses, which are being forced to relocate
or close completely due to skyrocketing city

“Too many storefronts are allowed to stay
vacant for months on the speculation that they
will be able to attract deeper-pocketed tenants,”
said Mark-Viverito. “This is what leads to the
kind of cookie-cutter retail that is proliferating
in our most diverse neighborhoods, creating a
sameness that represents none of what makes
New York City unique.”
Mark-Viverito wrapped her address by
discussing the disparities of opportunity that
still exist for women.
“For young women, that glass ceiling is
still too low,” she said. “For young women of
