CREATING COMMUNITY AT THE NORTH SHORE YACHT CLUB
After the success of Vamos! North Shore
Summer Program in 2014, North Shore
residents and Arts Committee members
decided to do it again this summer.
Desert Recreation District will host us at the
Yacht Club for six full days of fun, learning,
and a chance to meet neighbors in North
Shore who make this community such a great
place to live. This year, we’re calling the
program Vamos! Media Makers, and we’re
focusing on a variety of ways information
and creative expression move through North
Shore and out to the towns and communities
in Coachella and beyond, carrying the stories
of our lives, our families and our ideas.
Program Dates are Tuesday through
Thursday, June 16, 17, and 18, and Tuesday
through Thursday, June 30, July 1, and July 2.
Young people, ages 10-13, will meet at the
Yacht Club from 8:30 am-2 pm on each of
these days to work with teachers and each
other to create a new variety television show
about North Shore. We’ll learn about making
video, creating sets and props, writing stories,
telling jokes, doing interviews, and making our
own music to accompany the show. Working
with arts teachers from Los Feliz Charter
School for the Arts in Los Angeles, along with
special guests and musicians from around the
Coachella Valley and North Shore, our show
will premiere at the Fall Film Festival to be
held in North Shore this coming October.
This program includes lunch and breakfast for
participants each day.
From 3-4:30 pm each day, it’s all about our
Next Generation Media Makers for High
School Students. We’re taking on the next
issue of the El Progreso Newspaper - going out
on photography missions, developing stories
from scratch, interviewing guests, learning
graphic design skills and computer software,
and website skills to host our paper online.
We’ll also start learning about computer
mapping technologies - cool, interactive ways
of showing where and how you live.
(High Schoolers, you’re also invited to come
as teaching assistants for the Youth Program!

Adults, we hope you’ll join us evenings from
5-7pm. The North Shore Arts Committee
will host a series of workshops including
Community Organizing, Graphic Design,
Journalism (with special guest Carribbean
Fragoza), and others.

North Shore Yacht Club.
It’s Tuesday, 5:30pm, at the Yacht Club, the
room quickly starts filling up with the aroma
of home-cooked food, chatter and laughter. In
April, the Yacht Club became the home of a
series of poetry and writing workshops titled,
“No Solo del Pan Vive el Humano: Clases de
Poesia y Cuentos Cortos en Español.”
Maria Galaviz Luna, a native of Los Mochis,
Sinaloa, Mexico, brings life to this project
with her creative mind and positive energy.

funded by a two-year grant allocated to the
McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, in an effort
to contribute to art in the Eastern Coachella
Valley. The Crisalida Arts Project, as its being
called, aims at targeting the residents of Indio,
Coachella, Mecca, Thermal, including North
Shore and Oasis.
“No Solo del Pan Vive el Humano: Clases
de Poesia y Cuentos Cortos en Español,” not
only explores different styles of writing, the
workshops have become a way for residents
and visitors to come together in community.
Through the various topics presented, people

of all walks of life are able to share their
experiences, or simply listen, and learn from
one another. Poems and stories about love,
work, family, culture, and migration are shared
between the multigenerational audience.
For many, the workshops provide a space to
relax, spend time with like-minded individuals
and eat some delicious tamales, caldo de res or
tostadas. Stop by to share your stories, develop
your writing skills or just enjoy the company
and food. The workshops are open to everyone,
join us every Tuesday from 5:30pm to 8pm,
culminating July 21st.

»» Next comes the “Schematic
Design” where the architect
incorporates new client ideas into the
design and adds more detail to the
plans that show the layout of the site
and buildings
»» The third phase is “Design
Development” this is a very important
time where the designers add details to
the site plan and buildings, define the
materials for landscape and buildings,
and talk to government agencies to
ensure that the design is in compliance
with all regulations
»» The final design stage is when
the designers create “Construction
Documents” that are the blueprints for
a contractor to start building.
We are currently in the midst of the third
phase, the Design Development phase. In
February, we held a community meeting to
discuss building materials, landscape design,
and determine a theme for the park.
At the meeting, it became clear that everyone
felt that the theme of the park should be
highlighting the natural beauty and culture of
the past, present, and future of North Shore.
In March, we held a meeting for the skate
park design where youth were able to choose
their preferred types of structures to skate on.
They also thought it would be a great idea
to represent North Shore’s skating history by
having the design incorporate a memento
from the abandoned pool by the Salton Sea
(where the Yacht Club now stands) that used
to be popular with skaters worldwide. Design
Workshops for signs and scultpures in the park
are adding yet another dimension to the codesign process. We are hoping to finish the
Design Development phase in the next month
and begin the final stages of the permitting
process.

COMMUNIQUE from the WOMEN’S TEJIDOS PURÉPECHA GROUP
we have been able to overcome through our
strength and courage. We continue to move
forward with a strong desire to uplift our
families without leaving behind our roots which
serve as the unifying
foundation for our communities.
We wish to continue learning various cultural
art forms, especially the culinary traditions
from the Purepecha community, cross stitching,
knitting, crocheting, tejido deshilado as
well as continue sharing traditions that our
grandmothers have passed down to us. We
want to advance our English and learn some
basic computer skills in order to be able to
to have more cultural and artistic opportunities
to enrich our lives. Access to art and dance
workshops, grocery stores that offer fresh fruits
and vegetables at accessible prices as well
as a clinic in North Shore are all necessary
components that are urgently needed in North
Shore in order for us to further strengthen our
community. As a community we must not
remain silent. Our power grows when we unite
to demand what we deserve.
We propose to achieve our goals with active
and dedicated participation. Hard work,
responsibility, perseverance and dedication are
all necessary for us to reach our goals. All of the

are women who enjoy learning
the traditional teachings of
our local Cultural Treasure
Natividad. We are not only learning her
beautiful traditional tejidos; we are also
learning and enjoying her delicious food and her
generous hospitality. We are Hispanic women
of different cultures who come together for our
love of art. We are women who are proud of
our cultures and who are learning from each
other as we rescue our traditional heritage.
We are entrepreneurs in making changes,
we are workers, friends, daughters, mothers
and professionals. We are strong women who
want to change our community and help our
children excel in their education in order to
achieve a college education and have a better
future outside of the fields.
We come together because we like to learn and
share with one another. Within this space we
have been able to share our various experiences
and struggles. Throughout our conversations
we have been able to support each other and
solve some of the problems affecting our lives.
In coming together we have formed a women’s
support group for the women of North Shore

and its surrounding areas, including Thermal,
Mecca, Oasis, Coachella, Indio and Cathedral
City. We reunite weekly, no matter how
exhausted we may be from our daily jobs, to
destress all while sharing a delicious meal with
pleasant company.

Our intentions are to learn the aguja
maravillosa tejido practices that are a part of
our cultural and ancestral knowledge from the
Purepecha women of Michoacan, Mexico.
Many of us have seen this type of tejido work
but have not had the opportunity to learn this
artform. Throughout our weekly participation
we have learned to further appreciate and
love this artform. Our interest in learning
this artform gave us the opportunity to learn
some Purepecha words, which is an indigenous
language from Michoacan, Mexico as well
as learn more about the diverse cultures of
Mexico through art.
We also had the amazing opportunity to
relish the different dishes that Natividad and
Conchita prepared for us that are traditional to
Ocumicho, Michoacan. In these ways we were
able to learn about the different cultures that
make up a part of our cultural treasures. As we
learned to embroider we also shared our own
knowledge. Throughout this process we realized
that we have similar needs and experiences,
particularly challenging experiences, which
help our children with their studies. We also
want to continue learning more about the
educational system and the different programs
that form part of our children’s education in
order to inform ourselves and to advocate for
our children.
We formed this space to share knowledge
and to destress ourselves from our daily
responsibilities. This space has become not
only a support group, but has also become a
space where we can share new ideas as well
as our hopes for our communities. We must
continue to meet and form new friendships,
learn from each other, and support each other
in our efforts to improve the educational system
for our children’s future.
We want to continue advocating for our
communities in a united effort in order to meet
our families’ needs. We hope that our neighbors
and community members will support us in
these efforts. We want to be able to attend
our schools and community meetings. Better
and more frequent transportation is needed
for both our children and our neighborhoods
in order for this to be possible. We have also
been waiting years for a new school in North
Shore in order to meet the urgent needs of a
growing community. We need resources and
our community’s support in order to push for
these and other needs, such as better street
lighting and accessible rural bus routes for our
schools and our neighborhoods. We also want
women who have joined together to write
and share this comunicado are field workers
who pick the nation’s food including grapes,
limes, oranges, chiles, green beans, figs, lettuce,
sweet anise, watermelon, garlic, squash and
many more fruits and vegetables. Not only do
we work the fields during the harvest, we also
prepare the lands throughout the year all while
staying dedicated to our families.
Nevertheless we continue to come with a
dedicated effort to our tejidos. We, the women
of the rural communities, are the force that
enriches and uplifts the Coachella Valley.

Desert Riderz’ Bike Repair Shop
Does your bike need some attention? Bring
it to the Desert Riderz’ Bike Repair Shop!
All repairs are done free-of-charge by
North Shore youth who are part of the Desert
Riderz Bike co-op. The youth attended
trainings for more than a year with Carlos
Hernandez, Kounkuey Design Initiative’s
Urban Planning Intern. The collective will
also lead upcoming local efforts to establish a
bike lending program in North Shore.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

My name is Nicolas Flores Gomez and I’m
an inspiring artist residing in the city of North
Shore. I’m currently studying for my major of
graphic design, and planning to transfer to a
different school very soon. If I do, I’ll be the
third person in my whole family to graduate
college. On the way of getting to the place
where I am now, I have had some hurtles to
overcome. Some were easy, and took a lot of
work. There is still work ahead of me, but I
look forward to it.
Wanting to become an artist and coming to
it as a career wasn’t my first thought. I tried
it once, and noticed that I was good at it. I
didn’t think too much of it. I just did it. What
really convinced me was something my art
professor told me. She said that not everybody
is an artist. You are either born with the talent
or not. She said this as a way to tell the whole
class not to feel bad if their work wasn’t good.
But the words still stuck with me. During all
my classes, I was praised for my work when I
thought nothing much about it.
The more I did it, the more I liked it. I then
started to make my own pieces of work that
I wanted to make. I would search something
online, and I would do it. I noticed I was
getting better. I could sketch, sculpt, paint,
and design the things I wanted to.
I’m not yet confident I will be majorly
successful, but doing what I like and what I’m
good at is good enough for me.

I drink a smoothie each morning. Before they were
simple - pure fruit, milk and ice. For years, people said
these foods were good for one’s body. Since I like to try
things out, little by little, I started adding other things to
my smoothies. Today my typical smoothie is made of
liquefied strawberries, blueberries, green apple, celery,
kale, flaxseed, almonds, walnuts, soy milk, cranberries,
chia, and carrot. These are the things I like, but you can
put in what you like. Sometimes I put spinach, dates and
coconut, if I have them. Instead of milk, it can be made
with water. And in hot weather do not forget to throw in
ice, or use frozen strawberries and blueberries.
Celia Morando, who is featured in this issue’s recipe
exchange, grows a wide variety of fruits in her home
orchard, including the unique guamuchile fruit.

CREANDO COMUNIDAD EN EL NORTH SHORE BEACH & YACHT CLUB
Tras el éxito de ¡Vamos! North Shore
Programa de Verano en 2014, residentes de
North Shore y miembros del comité de arte
decidieron hacerlo de nuevo este verano.
Desert Recreation District nos acogerá
en el Yacht Club por seis días de diversion,
aprendizaje, y la oportunidad de conocer
a los vecinos en North Shore quienes hacen
la comunidad un buen lugar para vivir. Este
año, llamamos el programa “¡Vamos! Media
Makers,” y nos concentraremos en aprender
acerca de diferentes medios de información y
expresión creativa que nos ayudan a compartir
nuestras ideas y la historias de nuestras vidas
desde North Shore hacia otras comunidades
en Coachella y más alla.

residente de North Shore, se perfila algunas
de las iniciativas propulsadas por los residentes
que suceden en la costa norte.

Este modelo es un detalle del área del pabellón.
Los modelos físicos son muy diferentes de los
dibujos digitales. Uno puede moverse a su
alrededor de una manera diferente de dibujos en
3D digitales. Cada método revela elementos de
las opciones de diseño.

JUNIO 2015: NUEVO PARQUE NOTICIAS

Nuestro equipo de arquitectos de paisaje,
arquitectos de edificio, e ingenieros continuan
trabajando para avanzar el diseño del parque.
Actualmente estamos en la fase final del
proceso de diseño.
Usualmente, un proceso normal de diseño
sigue este patrón:
»» Cliente contrata al arquitecto para
diseñar un proyecto para ellos
»» El arquitecto viene con un “Diseño
Conceptual” que suele ser un simple
dibujo o un diagrama que representa
las ideas del arquitecto al cliente
»» Luego viene el “Diseño
Esquemático”, donde el arquitecto
incorpora nuevas ideas de los clientes
en el diseño y añade más detalle a los
planes que muestran el diseño del sitio
y los edificios
»» La tercera fase es “Desarrollo del
Diseño”. Este es un momento muy
importante, donde los diseñadores
agregan detalles al plan de sitio y los
edificios, definen los materiales para
el paisaje y edificios, y hablan con
las agencias gubernamentales para
asegurar que el diseño cumple con
todas las normas
»» La etapa de diseño final es cuando
los diseñadores crean “Documentos de
Construcción” que son los planos de un
contratista para empezar a construir.
Actualmente nos encontramos en medio de
la tercera fase, la fase de desarrollo del diseño.
En febrero, celebramos una reunión de la
comunidad para discutir los materiales de
construcción, diseño del paisaje, y determinar
un tema para el parque.
En la reunión, fue evidente que todo el
mundo pensaba que el tema del parque debe
destacar la belleza natural y la cultura del
pasado, presente y futuro de North Shore.
En marzo, celebramos una reunión para el
diseño de parque de patinaje donde los jóvenes
fueron capaces de elegir sus tipos preferidos de
estructuras para patinar. También pensaron
que sería una gran idea representar la historia
de patinaje de North Shore incorporando en el
diseño un recuerdo de la piscina abandonada
por Salton Sea (donde el Yacht Club se ubica
actualmente) que solía ser popular entre los
patinadores de todo el mundo. Los talleres de
diseño para los letreros y las esculturas en el
parque están agregando una nueva dimensión
al proceso de diseño collaborativo. Esperamos
terminar la fase de desarrollo del diseño en el
próximo mes y comenzar las etapas finales del
proceso de permisos.
Este modelo de parque que se muestra aquí
está hecho de cartón y cortado con láser, y
muestra los montículos y depresiones que tendrá
el terreno.

COMMUNIQUE del GRUPO de TEJIDOS de MUJERES PURÉPECHA
raíces que sirven como unificador y base para
nuestras comunidades.
Queremos seguir aprendiendo diversas
formas culturales de arte, especialmente
las tradiciones culinarias de la comunidad
purépecha, punto de cruz, punto, ganchillo,
tejido deshilado, así como continuar
compartiendo tradiciones que nuestras abuelas
nos han enseñado. Queremos avanzar en
nuestro Inglés y aprender algunas habilidades
básicas de la computadora con el fin de poder
ayudar a nuestros hijos con sus estudios.
También queremos seguir aprendiendo más
sobre el sistema educativo y los diferentes
programas que forman parte de la educación
de nuestros hijos con el fin de informarnos a
acceso a los talleres de arte y danza, tiendas de
abarrotes que ofrecen frutas y verduras frescas
a precios accesibles, así como una clínica
en la costa norte son todos los componentes
necesarios que se necesitan con urgencia en
North Shore para que podamos fortalecer aún
más nuestra comunidad. Como comunidad,
no debemos permanecer en silencio. Nuestro
poder crece cuando nos unimos para exigir lo
que nos merecemos.
Proponemos para lograr nuestros objetivos
con la participación activa y dedicada. El trabajo
duro, la responsabilidad, la perseverancia y la
dedicación son necesarios para que podamos
alcanzar nuestros objetivos. Todas las mujeres
que se han unido para escribir y compartir este

nuestro tesoro cultural local, la Sra. Natividad.
No sólo estamos aprendiendo sus hermosos
tejidos tradicionales; también estamos
aprendiendo y disfrutando de su deliciosa
comida y su generosa hospitalidad. Somos
mujeres hispanas de diferentes culturas y nos
une nuestro amor por el arte. Somos mujeres
que estamos orgullosas de nuestras culturas y
que estamos aprendiendo la una de la otra a
medida que rescatamos nuestro patrimonio
tradicional. Somos emprendedoras en hacer
cambios, somos trabajadoras, amigas, hijas,
madres y profesionales. Somos mujeres fuertes
que queremos cambiar nuestra comunidad
y ayudar a nuestros hijos a sobresalir en
sus estudios a fin de lograr una educación
universitaria y tener un mejor futuro fuera de
los campos.
Nos reunimos porque nos gusta aprender y
compartir con otros. Dentro de este espacio
hemos podido compartir nuestras diversas
experiencias y luchas. A lo largo de nuestras

de Michoacán, México. Muchos de nosotros
hemos visto este tipo de trabajo tejido, pero no
habíamos tenido la oportunidad de aprender
este arte. A través de nuestra participación
semanal hemos aprendido a apreciar más y
amar este arte. Nuestro interés en aprender
este arte nos dio la oportunidad de aprender
algunas palabras purépechas, que es una lengua
indígena de Michoacán, México, así como
aprender más acerca de las diversas culturas de
México a través del arte.
También tuvimos la increíble oportunidad
de saborear los diferentes platos que Natividad
y Conchita prepararon para nosotros que son
tradicionales de Ocumicho, Michoacán. De
esta manera hemos sido capaces de aprender
sobre las diferentes culturas que conforman
una parte de nuestros tesoros culturales.
Como hemos aprendido a bordar también
compartimos nuestro propio conocimiento.
A lo largo de este proceso nos dimos cuenta
de que tenemos necesidades y experiencias
similares,
experiencias
particularmente
difíciles, que hemos sido capaces de superar
a través de nuestra fuerza y valor. Seguimos
avanzando con un fuerte deseo de elevar a
nuestras familias sin dejar de lado nuestras
Me llamo es Nicolás Flores Gómez y yo
soy un artista inspirador que reside en el
pueblo de North Shore. Actualmente estoy
estudiando diseño gráfico, y estoy planificando
transferirme a otra escuela muy pronto. Si
lo hago, voy a ser la tercera persona en toda
mi familia en graduarse de la universidad.
En el camino de llegar al lugar donde
estoy ahora, he tenido que superar algunos
obstáculos. Algunos estaban fáciles, y otros
tomaron mucho trabajo. Todavía debo seguir
trabajando pero se que lo disfrutaré.
Quere ser artista y hacer estudios de artes
no fue algo que pensé hacer al principio. Lo
intenté una vez, y me di cuenta de que yo era
bueno en eso. No pensé demasiado. Solo lo
hice. Lo que realmente me convenció fue algo
que mi profesor de arte me dijo. Ella dijo que
no todo el mundo es un artista. Se nace con el
talento o no. Ella dijo esto como una manera
de decirle a toda la clase que no se sinteiran
mal si su trabajo no era bueno. Pero las
palabras se me quedaron grabadas. Durante
todas mis clases, me elogió por mi trabajo aun
cuando yo no pensaba que era algo especial.
Cuanto más lo hacía, más me gustaba.
Entonces empecé a hacer mis propias obras de
arte que yo quería hacer. Me gustaba buscar
algo en la internet y dibujarlo. Me di cuenta
de que estaba mejorando. Podía dibujar,
esculpir, pintar y diseñar las cosas que quería.
No estoy aún seguro si voy a tener un
enorme éxito en el futuro, pero hacer lo
que me gusta y lo que se me da bien es
suficientemente para mí.

Formamos este espacio para compartir
conocimiento y para liberarnos del estrés que
nos traen nuestras responsabilidades diarias.
Este espacio se ha convertido no sólo en un
grupo de apoyo, pero también se ha convertido
en un espacio donde podemos compartir
nuevas ideas, así como nuestras esperanzas
para nuestras comunidades. Tenemos
que seguir para conocer y formar nuevas
amistades, aprender unos de otros y apoyarnos
mutuamente en nuestros esfuerzos para
mejorar el sistema educativo para el futuro de
nuestros hijos.
Queremos seguir abogando por nuestras
comunidades en un esfuerzo conjunto con el
fin de satisfacer las necesidades de nuestras
familias. Esperamos que nuestros vecinos y
miembros de la comunidad nos apoyen en estos
esfuerzos. Queremos ser capaces de asistir a
nuestras escuelas y reuniones comunitarias. Se
necesita transporte mejor y más frecuente para
nuestros hijos y nuestros barrios, para que esto
sea posible. También hemos estado esperando
años para una nueva escuela en la costa norte
con el fin de satisfacer las necesidades urgentes
de una creciente comunidad. Necesitamos
recursos y el apoyo de nuestra comunidad con
el fin de impulsar estas y otras necesidades,
como una mejor iluminación de las calles
y accesibles rutas de autobús rurales para
nuestras escuelas y nuestros barrios. También
queremos tener más oportunidades culturales
y artísticas para enriquecer nuestras vidas. El
Comunicado son trabajadoras de campo que
recogen alimentos para la nación incluyendo
uvas, limones, naranjas, chiles, frijoles verdes,
higos, lechuga, anís dulce, la sandía, el ajo, la
calabaza y muchas más frutas y verduras. No
sólo trabajamos los campos durante la cosecha,
también preparamos las tierras a lo largo
del año a la vez de permanecer dedicadas a
nuestras familias.
Sin embargo seguimos viniendo con un
esfuerzo dedicado a nuestros talleres de tejido.
Nosotras, las mujeres de las comunidades
rurales, somos la fuerza que enriquece y eleva
el Valle de Coachella.

Receta de licuado de desayuno
Mercado de Delicias Laguna Azul en el Yacht Club
tiene lugar los primeros domingos de cada mes.

Yo me tomo un licuado cada mañana. Antes eran simples,
con pura fruta, leche y hielo. Por años ohia de otros
alimentos que la gente decía era buenos para el cuerpo
de uno. Como a mi me gusta probar las cosas, poquito a
poquito le fui agregando de esas cosas a mis licuados. Hoy
en día mi licuado típico tiene fresas, arándanos, manzana
verde, apio, kale, linaza, almendras, walnuts, leche de soya,
cranberries, chia, zanahoria. Esas cosas me gustan, pero
usted le puede poner lo que a usted le gusta. A veces le
pongo espinacas, dátiles y coco, si tengo. En vez de leche
se puede hacer con agua. Y en tiempo de calor no olvide
echarle hielo, o usar las fresas y blueberries congeladas.
