Estimados padres:
Bienvenidos de nuevo al colegio después de las largas vacaciones de verano y una especial bienvenida a los nuevos
padres del curso de Nursery y de otros alumnos que se incorporan a nuestro colegio. Os deseo un feliz comienzo al
curso nuevo a nombre de toda la plantilla del colegio. El objetivo de este primer boletín del curso es informativo: con
vistas al curso entero y con la intención de daros las direcciones de los correos electrónicos de los miembros del
equipo que estarán en contacto directo con vuestr@s hij@s. Queremos, como equipo, mejorar la comunicación y las
expectativas de cada alumno a lo largo de este curso, y asegurar que las necesidades de cada alumno sigan siendo el
enfoque del desarrollo de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en el Colegio Inglés de Asturias.
NUEVAS INICIATIVAS
Cada curso del departamento de Ed. Secundaria tendrá un tutor responsable para el desarrollo social y emocional de
los alumnos en el curso. Los tutores se llaman ‘Heads of Year’ (Coordinadores de Curso) y sus direcciones de correo
electrónico están incluídas en la parte final de este boletín.
Con el desarrollo social y emocional de cada alumno al centro de nuestros objetivos, hemos tomado la decisión de
eliminar las distracciones inevitables de las tecnologías móviles dentro del entorno escolar. Es nuestra esperanza que
cada familia en la comunidad escolar de su apoyo a la normativa que no se permite el uso de teléfonos móviles en el
colegio a parte de los dos cursos de Bachillerato. Cada teléfono móvil tiene que estar apagado en el centro, y estará
registrado por los tutores de Año 7 a Año 11 al comienzo de la jornada escolar. Devolveremos los teléfonos al final de
cada jornada. Cualquier alumno en posesión de un teléfono móvil recibirá una sanción inmediata. Los teléfonos
móviles estarán guardados bajo llave durante la jornada, por motivos de seguridad. El primer día del curso los alumnos
de Ed. Secundaria recibirán etiquetas para facilitar la identificación de cada teléfono móvil.
Los alumnos de Bachillerato tendrán, por el momento, el privilegio de guardar sus teléfonos móviles con ellos durante
la jornada escolar, exclusivamente por el uso de escuchar música durante los periodos de estudio personal en la
biblioteca. El uso de las redes sociales, las cámaras y los micrófonos está totalmente prohibido para cualquier alumno,
incluyendo los cursos de Años 12 y 13. Si cualquier alumno de Bachillerato decide ignorar esta normativa, recibirá una
sanción inmediata. Si los alumnos de Años 12 y 13 no respetan las reglas del uso reducido de los teléfonos móviles, el
colegio reserva el derecho de quitar los privilegios de utilizar los móviles en el centro.
Los alumnos en Ed. Infantil y Primaria no pueden traer teléfonos móviles al colegio. Si deciden traer un teléfono desde
casa, recibirán también una sanción apropiada por su edad.
Los alumnos de Ed. Secundaria pueden tener sus teléfonos móviles en el autobús, pero no pueden utilizar las redes
sociales, las cámaras ni los micrófonos durante la ruta del transporte escolar. Si no siguen las normativas, el monitor
del autobús les confiscará su teléfono móvil y lo llevará directamente a Mr Daniel, que trabajará con los Heads of Year
para dar la sanción apropiada.
Es esencial que trabajamos juntos entre cada casa y el colegio para respetar la normativa del uso de los teléfonos
móviles en el colegio. Os pido vuestra colaboración total para asegurar que el móvil de vuestr@ hij@ se entregue al
tutor a diario, y, en el caso de los alumnos que no utilizan el transporte escolar, ruego a las familias de pensar en la
falta de necesidad de traer un teléfono al colegio si están recogidos del centro a las 16.20 horas.

LA INVERSIÓN EN LA TECNOLOGÍA EN ED. SECUNDARIA Y EL APOYO ESCOLAR
El colegio ha comprado tablets para utilizar en el departamento de Ed. Secundaria. En los últimos años, los alumnos de
Ed. Primaria han trabajado con tablets en varias áreas del currículo común de Juniors, dando la importancia necesaria
a la aplicación de los conocimientos de informática a través de otras asignaturas. A partir de este trimestre, los
alumnos de Ed. Secundaria podrán acceder recursos extendidos en sus aulas, para fomentar su desarrollo en
informática en todas las asignaturas.
La práctica establecida del uso de asistentes en clases de Infantil y Primaria se extiende a Ed. Secundaria este año, para
continuar el formato del aprendizaje diferenciado en los cursos superiores del colegio. El año pasado tuvimos una
profesora de apoyo de tiempo parcial para inglés y matemáticas. Este año tenemos una profesora de apoyo para
ciencias y matemáticas y damos la bienvenida a Ms Skinner y a Mr Palyska al equipo de Ed. Secundaria para trabajar
con grupos reducidos en las sesiones de lengua inglesa a partir de Año 7.
El primer grupo de tres clases llega a Ed. Primaria (Juniors) este año, y con este crecimiento hemos mejorado aún más
las proporciones de adultos nativos-alumno en este departamento. Mr Carroll se incorpora en el equipo de Juniors
como asistente adicional en Año 3, aumentando el número de asistentes en Juniors con Ms Suárez, Ms Varela (nueva
asistente en Año 4), Ms Viejo y Ms Anley.
NOTICIAS DE LA PLANTILLA
Damos la bienvenida a cinco profesores nuevos, y celebramos la incorporación de profesores de apoyo en Primaria y
Secundaria, y saludamos de nuevo a Ms Menéndez que se reincorpora en Año 3 después de su excedencia de 20142015.
Enhorabuena a Mr y Mrs Waugh por el nacimiento de su segundo hijo, Leo, en agosto. La baja de maternidad de Mrs
Waugh estará cubierta por Ms Martínez, con Mr Carroll trabajando como asistente en la clase 3C.

COMUNICACIÓN A TRAVÉS DE LA PÁGINA WEB
La página web sufrió un ataque de piratería durante el verano y tuvimos que suspender su uso durante julio y agosto.
Por este motivo, el equipo de administración comunicó las listas de los libros de texto por correo electrónico. La
página web ya está en marcha de nuevo y la información clave para el mes de septiembre: rutas de transporte, el
calendario escolar, los libros de texto y el menú para este mes están accesibles desde la web: www.colegioingles.com
NOTICIAS GENERALES
Otro año más el CURSO DE VERANO fue todo un éxito, que bajo la talentosa dirección de Mr Ponchon y su equipo de
profesores tuvo un récor de 256 alumnos en julio.
El colegio comienza este curso académico con un número récor de 672 alumnos, por lo que se prevé un mayor tráfico
de coches hacia y desde las instalaciones del colegio.

Si traéis a vuestros hijos e hijas en coche debéis utilizar el aparcamiento habilitado. Las primeras dos líneas del
aparcamiento del colegio son para el uso exclusivo de madres y padres que dejan y recogen a sus hij@s en coche. Este
sistema fue introducido el año pasado y mejoró considerablemente el tráfico a las horas de la entrada y de la salida. En
estas horas de alto movimiento de vehículos el aparcamiento dentro del colegio está reservado para el transporte
escolar. Por favor, pensad en la seguridad de todos a la ENTRADA Y SALIDA DEL COLEGIO porque los alumnos cruzan
el aparcamiento para llegar el colegio.
El colegio mantiene la supervisión de alumnos que llegan temprano al colegio (desde las 8.15 horas hasta las 8.45
horas). Esta supervisión adicional se factura mensualmente a 20€ por familia. Por favor, informad al equipo
administrativo por correo electrónico [email protected] si queréis seguir o empezar a utilizar este servicio de
llegada anticipada.

ENHORABUENA a los alumnos de los cursos superiores que han obtenido resultados muy positivos en todos los niveles
en los exámenes de la convocatoria de mayo-junio. En los I/GCSE nuestros alumnos aprobaron el 89% de los exámenes
con una calificación entre A* (10) y C (5) en cinco asignaturas o más. Felipe obtuvo la calificación A o A* en todas las
asignaturas a las que se presentó. Aitana, Cristina R, Lucía and Alberto también obtuvieron resultados excelentes en
los I/GCSE.
En los exámenes AS level, nuestros alumnos aprobaron un 86% de los exámenes, un 46% de los cuales era de la
calificación A o B. Pablo P obtuvo las máximas calificaciones en cada una de las asignaturas a las que se presentó.
Phoenix, Alfonso, Aitor, Guillermo, Pablo A y Adrián también obtuvieron resultados excelentes en los AS.
Por último, en los exámenes A-level, nuestros alumnos aprobaron el 87% de los exámenes, un 61% de los cuales era de
la calificación A*, A o B. Seis alumnos de Y13 obtuvieron cualificaciones de A* o A en todas las asignaturas: Belén (3A*y
1A), Enrique (2A* y 3A), Julia (2A*y 2A), Juan (2A* y 1A ) Paloma (1A* y 4A) y Vera (1A* y 3A).

Nueve alumnos obtuvieron calificaciones cuya equivalencia fue de un 10 sobre 10 para la Fase General de la PAU. Tres
alumnos obtuvieron resultados excepcionales sumando las calificaciones obtenidas en la Fase Específica de la PAU:
Juan alcanzó la máxima nota de 14, Belén obtuvo un 13,9 y Luis un 13,8.
Enhorabuena a todos los alumnos por su esfuerzo para lograr los resultados que obtuvieron, y gracias a los padres y
los profesores que siempre los habéis apoyado en su vida escolar.

UNIFORME
Como muchos recordaráis, envié una carta a todas las familias del colegio a finales del curso sobre el uniforme para
2015-2016. Me gustaría recordaros de las prendas obligatorias para el uniforme del centro - dado que el periodo
extendido de los tres años de transición al polo blanco obligatorio ha terminado.
De Año 2 hasta Año 13:
Polo blanco bordado con el escudo del colegio
Chaqueta roja o jersey rojo con el escudo del colegio, calcetines o medias rojos (alumnas)
Jersey gris con el escudo del colegio, calcetines grises (alumnos)
Pantalón gris o falda gris
Calzado negro o azul marino oscuro
Las sudaderas grises con el escudo del colegio no son aceptadas como uniforme del Colegio Inglés. Estas sudaderas
solo tenían su uso en actividades extraescolares de deportes. Esta prenda no estará aceptada como uniforme, ni como
chaqueta. Los accesorios – chaqueta, bufanda, guantes deberían ser lisos y oscuros (no son aceptadas como uniforme
las prendas de tela vaquera, las sudaderas grises, las zapatillas deportivas, las prendas con palabras, eslóganes ni
firmas). Los abrigos son una prenda adicional al uniforme, no son un sustituto al uniforme. Sólo los jerseys o chaquetas
con el escudo del colegio se consideran el uniforme aceptado. Ningún otro jersey será aceptado en el colegio.

Dear Parents
Welcome back to school after the long summer holidays and welcome to all new parents in Nursery and other year
groups. On behalf of the entire staff in school, I would like to wish you and your families a happy start to the Autumn
term. This first newsletter will provide you with key information about the year ahead, as well as informing you of the
email addresses of the members of staff who will be in direct contact with your child. Our aim is to improve
communication and standards further over the course of this year and to ensure that every child’s needs continue to
be central to the development of teaching and learning in the English School of Asturias.
NEW INITIATIVES
The Secondary department will begin the new academic year with Heads of Year to support pastoral care of each child
within a year group. The names of the Heads of Year, corresponding year groups and their respective email addresses
can be found later in this newsletter.
Alongside the monitoring of children’s emotional and social development, the decision has been taken to eliminate
the distraction of mobile technology within the school setting. Every family in the school community is encouraged to
support the rule that mobile telephones are not to be used in school by any child up to and including Year 11 students.
All mobiles should be switched off before entering the building and will be collected at the beginning of each school
day by Year 7 to Year 11 tutors. The telephones will be returned to the students by their tutors at the end of the
school day. Any child found in possession of a mobile telephone after registration will be sanctioned immediately. All
mobile telephones will be locked away during the course of the day, for safety reasons. Students will be given name
labels to make their telephone easy to recognise.
Sixth formers will be, for the present time, allowed to keep their mobiles on their person during the day, only in order
to listen to music in private study time. Social networking and the use of cameras or voice recorders are strictly
prohibited for all students in school, including sixth formers. Any member of the sixth form student body who decides
to ignore this protocol will be severely sanctioned. This privilege may be withdrawn from the sixth formers if they do
not use their mobile phones sensibly and responsibly.
Children below the age of Year 7 are not allowed to bring in mobile telephones to school. Should they choose to bring
in a telephone from home, they will be given an appropriate sanction. No children from Infants or Juniors are allowed
to bring mobile telephones into school.
All Secondary students may carry their phones on the bus, but again, they must not use social networks, cameras or
voice recorders at any time during the school bus route. If they do so, their mobile telephone will be confiscated by
the bus monitor and taken directly to Mr Daniel, who will work with Heads of Year to organise the sanction for
disobeying a school rule.
Smart watches are not permitted in school for any child, sixth formers included. If a student is using a smart watch in
school, it will be immediately confiscated.
It is fundamental that parents and school staff work together with this drive to keep the use of mobile telephones
under control. I ask for your full collaboration in ensuring that your child’s mobile is always handed in, and, in the case
of the families of those children who arrive and leave by car, to weigh up the necessity of having a mobile telephone in
school in the first place.
INVESTMENT IN TECHNOLOGIES AND LEARNING SUPPORT
The school has invested in a class set of tablets to be used in the Secondary department. Over the past few years, the
Junior section of the school has used tablets across the curriculum areas, highlighting the importance of applying
knowledge within Computer Science to other curriculum areas. Students through Secondary will be able to access
curriculum resources in classrooms, in order to extend ICT skills through cross curricular learning.

The well-established practice of using additional adult support in Infant and Junior classrooms is also being extended
into the Secondary section of the school this year, in order to continue the level of differentiated learning into the
higher years of our school. Support in Maths and Science has grown from a part-time post to a full time position, and
we have brought Ms Skinner and Mr Palyska into the Secondary team to support English language learning from Year 7
upwards.
As the Junior department celebrates its first three form intake in Year 3, the adult-child ratio has improved further
within this section of the school. Mr Carroll joins the Year 3 team to provide English language support, bringing the
total of teaching assistants in the Juniors to five, joining Ms Suárez, Ms Varela (who also joins the Juniors this
September) Ms Viejo and Ms Anley.

We welcome five new teachers to our staff, and additional support teachers within the Junior and Secondary sections
of the school, as well as a welcome back to Ms Menéndez into Year 3 of the Junior department following a year’s
sabbatical leave. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Waugh on the arrival of their second child, Leo, who was born in midAugust. Mrs Waugh’s maternity leave cover will be provided by Ms Martínez, with Mr Carroll as Teaching Assistant in
class 3C.

The school web site was the victim of a hacking attack and was suspended from early July to late August. As a result of
this, parents were forwarded text book information by school email. The web site is now back online and the key
information for September – bus routes, calendar, text books and school menu – is available: www.colegioingles.com
SCHOOL NEWS
Children from ESA and beyond attended another successful SUMMER COURSE, which under the expert management
of Mr Ponchon and his team of teachers and assistants from within and outside of school, catered for a record 256
pupils in July.
The school starts this academic year with its highest ever intake of 672 pupils and therefore we anticipate that there
will be increased traffic to and from the school. If you bring children by car, please use the car park. The first two lines
of the car park are designated for parents dropping off and collecting children, so the area is clear of staff cars, which,
as in the past academic year, has greatly improved the flow of traffic in the mornings and afternoons. At times of
departure and arrival, inside the school is reserved for buses only. Would you all please take extreme care when
ARRIVING AND DEPARTING FROM SCHOOL, as children have to walk across the car park, and we need to ensure their
safety at all times.
School is continuing to run its early arrivals club, from 8.15-8.45am. This service incurs a charge of 20€ per month, per
family. Please inform the administration team via email [email protected] if you wish to continue or take up
this service.

CONGRATULATIONS to our older students who performed so well at all levels in the summer exams. In the Y11 IGCSE
examinations 89% pupils gained at least 5 subjects A*-C. Felipe performed outstandingly in this summer’s IGCSEs,
achieving all As or A*s, closely followed by Aitana, Cristina R, Lucía and Alberto whose grades were excellent.
In the Y12 AS examinations 86% of all exams were passed, 46% with grade A or B. Pablo P achieved straight As, closely
followed by Phoenix, Alfonso, Aitor, Guillermo, Pablo A and Adrián whose results were also excellent.
In the Y13 A2 examinations 87% of all exams were passed, 61% with grade A* - B. There were outstanding
performances from the following students: Belén (3A*and 1A), Enrique (2A* and 3A), Julia (2A*, 2A), Juan (2A*, 1A )
Paloma (1A* and 4A), Vera (1A* and 3A).
Nine students achieved A-level grades that gave them a 10 in the PAU general. Three students gained outstanding
results combined with the PAU specific evaluation: Juan scored a perfect 14 Belén scored an excellent 13,9 and Luis
scored a super 13,8.
Well done to all students, who worked hard to achieve their grades, and thank you to all teachers and parents for
working so well to support them in the difficult months before examinations.

UNIFORM
Following the letter which was sent to all parents at the end of the Summer term, I would like to remind you of the
simple requirements which make up our school uniform. Only the following items are accepted as correct school
uniform for Years 2-13 is: white polo with the embroidered school logo, red cardigan or jersey and red socks or tights
for girls, grey jersey and socks for boys, grey trousers or skirt, dark shoes. We are no longer in a transitional period for
white polo shirts – all children from Years 2-13 must adhere to the school uniform policy.
Grey hooded sweatshirts with the ESA logo are not acceptable as any part of our school uniform. These sweatshirts
were brought into the school some years ago for children who took part in after school sports clubs. This item of
clothing is not permitted as school uniform, nor as a jacket. Accessories–coat, scarf, gloves etc. should be plain and
dark (no denim, no grey hooded sweatshirts, no trainers, no letters, trade names etc.), and may be worn in addition to
uniform, not as a substitute. Please note that in the interests of uniformity and smartness only ESA jumpers (available
exclusively from school) are permitted as school uniform.
Please remember that the school PE kit is as follows:
White t-shirt, embroidered with the ESA logo, dark blue ESA shorts, embroidered with the ESA logo, white socks, white
trainers and red ESA tracksuit, also embroidered with the ESA logo).
JEWELLERY RULES
One simple necklace is permitted as part of individual jewellery, as well as one pair of simple earrings which are small
and discreet. One simple ring on each hand is permitted, one bracelet per wrist and a watch. Necklaces must be
covered by the top button of the school polo shirt.
