It’s all about relationship, not religion…” If our goal is to have a true, healthy, and acThese two quotes above are some extive relationship with Jesus, perhaps we should ask amples that you might hear from time to time Jesus what he wants rather than project upon him from people who are Christian. They are ways of the ignorance of an apathetic catchphrase. What saying, “knowing about someone isn’t as powerdid Jesus do and what does he ask in order that ful as knowing someone.” There is some truth to we might have a better relationship with him? Let’s this, but in order to know someone we also have look at the facts. to be introduced to them. To be in relationship Jesus belonged to the Jewish religion and he with someone we also need to get to know them practiced that faith. He criticized the distortions of on their own terms. In a similar way, real religion the true Jewish faith, but he definitely practiced as a serves the purpose of helping us to have a good good Jew. He went to Temple, the synagogue, did and true relationship that doesn’t depend on our his prayers, and made sacrifices. It was also Jesus’ whims or biases. Religion isn’t just a bunch of idea to start the Church. He passed his authority to rules, laws and traditions that we blindly follow the disciples and told them to act in his name. He so we can avoid knowing Jesus. Real religion is told his followers to belong to the Church and he how we come to know Jesus and follow him on instituted sacraments that needed to be received his terms. This is just common sense. through the Church. Jesus told the disciples to What would happen if overnight nobody baptize, teach, have the Eucharist, and act in and ever went to Mass or church? Many people through the Church. Why is that? Jesus knows that would know who Jesus is but their kids would be we need it. He gives it to us as a gift. Our religious far less likely to have any real knowledge of who practice works in harmony with true spirituality. It Jesus is. Their kid’s kids would likely have little doesn’t mean it will always be easy or perfect, but or no knowledge of the faith and what little they it does mean that we will have the best of both and did have would be greatly distorted. In addition, it faith will be alive. would be highly unlikely that anyone’s lives would be different because of their faith. CHILDREN’S CHOIR PRACTICE RESUMES! With the recent elections I began thinking about freedom and law. Many things in our city, state, and/or country it is “legal” for us to do, we are free to do them, but doing those things doesn’t necessarily give us freedom. Often I feel like I’m an outsider because I choose to live a life different from many of my peers, spending the majority of my time at the Church. I often notice that I begin comparing myself to my peers…and desiring to just be like them, to be “free” to do what they are doing, and then I am reminded of what true freedom is. True freedom does not come from doing whatever we want whenever we want, even if it is legal. True freedom comes in living as we are meant to live. Seeking the fullness of life that Christ offers us. “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2). There is something greater for us. This world doesn’t have very high standards, it doesn’t offer true freedom, and it doesn’t offer us the abundant life that Christ does. So as I reminder to myself, “Do not be conformed to this world!” “Be transformed!” just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s right, and it definitely doesn’t mean that it gives us freedom. TRUE COMMUNITY AND COMMUNION (An excerpt from Behold the Mystery: A Deeper Understanding of the Catholic Mass, by Mark Hart) Of course, Mass isn’t just “me and God.” As Hart says, it’s a call to “true community and communion” aboard the ark of the Church. There are challenges. Just as Noah’s ark must have been smelly and not always harmonious, our church experience is not always smooth sailing. For one thing, “we’re a motley bunch.” We’re wanna be saints and willing sinners with one collective hope: salvation. The poor pastor has the unenviable task of trying to get all of us into the ark and onto the same page as we set sail for eternity. Still, we are family! Each of us can contribute to the quality of our worship and life together. Some of us can offer our musical talents; others can serve as lectors, greeters, or ministers of holy communion. We can all think about how to better know and help one another, how to reach out beyond the parish, and how to support our hardworking priests and staff. The more invested we are in our parish family, the deeper our experience when we gather at the table of the Eucharist. FAMILY FAITH SHARING John 2:13-22 When Jesus was alive, devout Jews were supposed to go to Jerusalem and offer an animal sacrifice at the Temple during Passover. Jews often traveled from very far away and could not bring sacrificial animals with them. In the Temple courtyards there were men who sold cattle, sheep, and doves for this sacrifice, as well as men who exchanged money (probably for Jews who had traveled from foreign lands). Many of the sellers and money-changers had begun to charge very high prices to buy an animal or exchange money. In this passage from John, we read about Jesus going to the Temple during Passover and encountering these sellers and money-changers. He became very angry, chased them all out of the courtyard, and told them to “stop making my Father’s house into a marketplace.” Why do you think Jesus was so angry? Can you think of some part of your life that Jesus might want to “clean up?” Your language -- do you swear often and take the name of the Lord in vain? Your relationships -- the way you treat others? Your eating habits -- what you choose to eat? page 6 www.shepherdcatholic.com WEEKLY CALENDAR Saturday 9:00am 1:00pm Monday 12:00pm 5:30pm 6:30pm 7:00pm November 10, 2014 Mass Rosary Saint Book Group H.
