Why are you persecuting me?
Father Mark Wagner
This weekend we
thank God for all the
"Blessings" that people
receive because of the
ministries of our parish
which connect generous
stewards with those in need.
Today's readings talk about
this “connectivity” which is so important
in the Church.
The word “connectivity” is a popular
new word which was invented in
modern times to describe the
connectedness that is possible thanks to
new technology. But the concept is old,
and it is found very clearly in the
readings of this Fifth Sunday of
Easter. Jesus says that we must be connected to Him as a branch is connected
to vine. Otherwise we can do nothing
and we will not bear fruit. We must
have His life flowing through us like the
sap that flows into the branches of a
tree. The Holy Spirit circulates within
the Body of Christ, making us all one in
Christ: “the way we know that he
remains in us is from the Spirit he gave
us” (1John 3:24). And our first reading
(Acts 9:26-31) recalls the fact that Jesus
appeared to Saul and told him not to
persecute the church, since it is His
Body: “Saul, Saul, Why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4). This is real
connectivity! When we hurt someone
who is part of the Church, we are hurting Jesus Himself!
Unfortunately there are many people
who do not believe that the Church is
truly the Body of Christ. They do not
believe that the Holy Spirit guides the
Church through the ministry of the pope
united with his bishops. As you may have
heard in news reports, there are some
people in San Francisco who believe that
they do not have to listen to the teachings
of the Church. Our beloved former pastor Fr. Joseph Illo is there and he is suffering because these people (mainly news
people and non-practicing Catholics) are
saying that Catholics do not have to
remain connected to their local pastor, to
their local archbishop, and to the pope’s
teachings. It is very sad that some people
in our modern world do not believe in the
connectivity that exists in the Catholic
Church.
Let us pray for the peace that existed
in the early Church: “The church
throughout all Judea, Galilee, and
Samaria was at peace. It was being built
up and walked in the fear of the Lord,
and with the consolation of the Holy
Spirit it grew in numbers” (Acts 9:31).
All of our priests will be on retreat
this week (May 4-May 8). We will
offer the following schedule:
*8am Mass on Monday, May 4
*5:45pm Mass on Friday, May 8
*No other Masses or Confessions
*No Friday Adoration

This Feast of the Sacred Body of Our Divine Lord
This Feast of the Sacred Body of Our
Divine Lord is celebrated in the Latin
Church on the Thursday after Trinity
Sunday to solemnly commemorate the
Institution of the Sacrament of Holy
Eucharist. This great event is also
commemorated on Maundy Thursday,
mentioned as Natalia Calicis (Birth of
the Chalice) in the Calendar of Polemius
(448) for the 24th of March, the 25th of
March being recognized in some places
as the day of the Death of Christ. This
day, however, occurs in Holy Week, a
season of sadness, during which the
minds of the faithful are expected to be
occupied with thoughts of Our Lord’s
Passion.
Moreover, so many other mysteries
relative to the Passion are
commemorated on this day that the
principal event, the Institution of the
Holy Eucharist, is deserving of a
particular festival. This is mentioned as
the chief reason for introducing the feast
of Corpus Christi in the Papal Bull
"Transiturus." In His Divine Providence,
the Lord brought about this feast by
utilizing the most willing instrument of
St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, in
Belgium. From her early youth, Sr. Juliana
had a great veneration for the Blessed
Sacrament, and always longed for a
special feast in Its honor. She was
rewarded by Christ for this holy desire
with an authentic vision of the Church,
whose liturgical cycle appeared as an
almost-full moon, yet having one dark
void, signifying that there was no joyous
celebration of the Eucharist in the entire
Church calendar. She humbly submitted
this revelation to many superiors finally
coming to Jacques Pantaléon, at that time
Archdeacon of Liège, who afterwards was
successively made the Bishop of Verdun,
Patriarch of Jerusalem (after the First
Crusade), and finally elected to the
Papacy as Urban IV. A certain Bishop
Robert de Thorete who had been
presented with her vision as well, took it
to task and decided to promote a greater
devotion to our Eucharistic King.
Since bishops had the right of
ordering feasts for their respective
jurisdictions, he called a synod in 1246,
and ordered the celebration to be held in
the following year. He had a monk by the
name of John write the special Office for
the solemnity. The decree and parts of the
original Office can still be read today!
The pious Bishop did not live to see the
fulfillment of his command, for he died on
October 16, 1246. Nevertheless, the feast
was celebrated for the first time by the
obedient canons of the Cathedral of St.
Martin at Liège in June of 1247.
Respect Life
“All too often, as we know from experience, people do not choose life, they do not accept the ‘Gospel of
Life’ but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking that block life, that do not respect life,
because they are dictated by selfishness, self-interest, profit, power and pleasure, and not by love, by
concern for the good of others.
…As a result, the living God is replaced by fleeting human idols which offer the intoxication of a flash of
freedom, but in the end bring new forms of slavery and death.”
— from Pope Francis’ homily at Mass for ‘Evangelium Vitae Day’ June 16, 2013

John Marsella
Is there someone in your life who
always inspires you to be a better
person? For many parishioners at
St. Joseph’s, that person is John
Marsella. John and his wife, Kristi,
are very busy and active parents to
their four children. They balance
this family vocation with multiple
careers and community service
commitments, but at the core
everything revolves around their
faith life. When a family’s life
revolves around their faith first, it is
almost always because the father of
the family makes that the priority.
He does this by first demonstrating
his own commitment. When John
demonstrates his faith commitment,
he inspires both his family and his
church family. The photo above
shows him in full “Vatican Swiss
Guard” ensemble, at last year’s
Many Hands, Many Hearts Gala.
Beyond being on the Gala
Committee, John is one of our lead
RCIA catechists, serves as our Altar
Server Leader, Marriage
Preparation Teacher and as one of
our directors for the Live Stations of
the Cross. John’s calendar is busy,
but it always starts and ends at St.
Joseph’s. Let John inspire you….. to
examine your own personal
calendar and how you might be
able manage your “Catholic” time.

DEL LAPTOP DEL PÁRROCO, Padre Mark
¿Por qué me persigues?
Padre Mark Wagner
necesidad.
Las lecturas de hoy hablan sobre esta
"conectividad" que es tan importante en
la iglesia.
La palabra “conectividad” es una
nueva palabra popular que fue
inventada en tiempos modernos para
describir la medida de conexión que es
posible gracias a la tecnología. Pero el
concepto es antiguo, y se encuentra muy
claramente en las lecturas de este quinto
domingo de Pascua. Jesús dice que
tenemos que conectarnos a Él como un
sarmiento conectado a la vid. De otro
modo, no podemos hacer nada y no
daremos frutos.
Saulo, ¿Por qué me persigues?” (Hechos
9:4).
¡Esto es conectividad
verdadera!
No creen
(Hechos
9:31)

LLAMADOS A PERMANECER UNIDOS A EL,
PARA QUE EL TENGAMOS VIDA.
Padre Hamilton Suarez
LLAMADOS, llamados a qué?
cuanto necesitan hoy nuestras familias

St. Joseph’s. Deja que John te
inspire… a examinar tu propio
calendario personal.
