(See more on this on Page 7,) Advent is underway with our theme of “Be Together.” Many ask why or how did we get to that? It is very important today more than ever to live our faith and not merely talk about it or make ideological stands, because anyone can do that. I have many conversations with high school through young parenting-age people and with middle-aged parents about their young adult children. We are dealing with many issues and the basic ones are trust and unconditional love. If we have those as a base then we can heal, forgive and grow through the challenges of life. We are fraught with the challenge of just having a conversation about hot topics like: race, politics, sexual orientation, spirituality and religion. It seems that we make statements and judgements that stymie conversation instead of ask questions and help discover these situations to integrate them into our lives, families and churches. In our parish, we are afraid to talk to others about some of these things, because we may lose friends (who are not really friends) or be shunned. Christmas is a time we are together as a family and as a parish. Many of us may disagree on some issues or positions in life. The church does guide us and call us to love each human being as a person and to judge the right or wrong of a person’s actions. We have to separate the person from the actions. This is how we come to heal, accept and forgive people. My hope is that as we are called to respect each other as people we can find a place to gather around the Christ Child together. Have a Blessed Advent! Vocation Corner: Christmas Discernment Event We’ve all finally made it to the time of year where things get busier than we could ever think possible! Work parties, family gatherings, shopping events, and so much more! Of course the most important thing is to keep God right in the middle of all of our plans. In light of this important task, I’m pleased to announce that over Christmas Break, the Vocation Office is going to be offering a retreat for young men in high school and college who are open to discerning a call to the Priesthood. This is going to be a more focused event that the summer camps, with more opportunity to allow the Lord to speak through prayer. If you fit the description of a high school of college guy who is open to a call to the priesthood, then you have nothing to lose. And if you don’t fit this description, but know someone who does, maybe you could give them a great Christmas gift comprising of an invitation to attend the retreat! The event is going to be held at Bishop Lane Retreat center (Main Building), it will run from Sunday, Dec. 27 at 7 PM to Monday, Dec. 28 at 3 PM, and costs $50 to cover a portion of the expenses of lodging and breakfast and lunch on Monday. I’m looking forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for this weekend, and I hope that many young men from our Diocese will experience what god has been planning for them, so please help me to get the word out and if you are interested e-mail me at [email protected] for more information! Fr. Keith Romke, Diocesan Director of Vocations Page 6 Week 2: Prepare Together The Church of Holy Apostles, McHenry, IL Family Advent Event Today Advent is a time of expectation and preparation. John the Baptist cried out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord!” This is why we build up the Kingdom of God on earth in preparation for our Lord to come at the end of time. During Advent, as we come together and prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, we are also looking forward to the Cross that stands behind the cradle. Christmas is not just a cute story about a baby and shepherds, angels and animals. it points to the mystery of Christ’s saving death and resurrection, without which there would be no reason to celebrate Christmas. So we are not only preparing for Christmas, but by doing so, building the Kingdom in preparation for eternal salvation. Celebrate “Las Posadas” This Advent Las Posadas (Spanish for “the Inns”) is a nine-day celebration with origins in Mexico that begins on December 16 and ends December 24. It is a tradition for many Catholic Mexicans and other Hispanics that symbolizes the trials that Mary and Joseph endured before finding a place to stay and where Jesus would be born. Everyone is invited to take part in this tradition, which will be held from 6 to 9 PM on Sunday, December 20, Tuesday, December 22, and Wednesday, December 23, from 6 to 9 PM. The evening includes praying of the Rosary, reading Scriptures, re-enactment of Joseph’s search for room at the inn and singing of Christmas carols called villancicos. The evening ends with a celebration of festive foods and playing the piñata game for children. Make it an Advent tradition for your family! Come celebrate St. Nicholas Day and the Advent season with our Family Advent Event today, December 6, from 6 to 8 PM in Sherry Center (after the 5 PM Mass). We’ll have crafts, games and music and a pizza dinner...it will be a fun evening for the whole family! Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, on Saturday, December 12, is a day of great celebration in the Mexican culture. It celebrates Our Lady’s appearance to Juan Diego. At Holy Apostles this holy day will be celebrated with a sunrise service called Mañanitas which includes traditional songs and dancers, beginning at 5 AM followed by Mass at 6 AM, with light refreshments following in Sherry Center. A second Mass in Spanish will be celebrated at 2:30 PM, with dancing and refreshments following the Mass. All are invited to take part. Hear Handel’s “Messiah” at Holy Apostles It only comes every three years...so don’t miss this opportunity to hear this beautiful concert on Saturday, December 12, at 7 PM, when the chorus of McHenry Community High School, under the direction of Mr. Derek Galvicius, performs Handel’s Messiah for the first time since 2012. Everyone is invited to enjoy and support these amazing and talented young people as the perform one of the most famous classical English oratorios of all time. Come for the 5 PM Mass and stay for the concert. Admission is free. H A L O HALO’s Holiday Bake Sale was a big hit! All the baked items were sold out. Thanks for your support by baking and/or buying! Page 7 Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2015 Knights Ask for Support of “Holiday Meals” Jubilee of Mercy: 12/8/15 to 11/20/16 Knights of Columbus Council 1288 of McHenry will continue to raise funds to provide a Christmas meal to those in need in our community. This will be the 9th year the Knights will undertake this rewarding and appreciated project. Their mission is simple: they raise money to purchase food and, through a partnership with Meijer, they are able to stretch the money that is donated a long way. The food is packed in such a way that each family receives everything they need to prepare a proper holiday meal. One hundred percent of the funds donated is used purchase food that benefits needy families in our own McHenry area. Any amount you can give, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. The distribution of Christmas meals will be on Saturday, December 19. The Knights welcome everyone to help sort and pack the meals. Please mail your donations to Knights of Columbus Council 1288, P. O. Box 148, McHenry IL 60051. Your support is truly appreciated!! The Jubilee of Mercy was announced by Pope Francis as a year to be lived intensely in each particular Church, allowing every person to encounter the mercy of God the Father through diligent labor for the Church's mission there. The most evident sign of this pastoral care is the chance to open a Door of Mercy in every diocese. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will permit even people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage. It will be the responsibility of the local Ordinary to decide in which church of the diocese the Door of Mercy will be opened. There should be a Door of Mercy opened in every diocese and eparchy of the world. In addition to the Door of Mercy chosen for the diocese, the diocesan Ordinaries may also permit the opening of other Doors of Mercy at Shrines of particular importance, especially where there is the happy possibility that the many faithful who visit the shrine may always encounter the merciful embrace of the Father in confession (cfr. MV 3). The McHenry Deanery Door of Mercy is at St. John the Baptist Church, Johnsburg. December 13, 2015 at 9 AM by Reverend Jacek Junak.
