The Power of a Word
It is a real pleasure to find myself writing the editorial for our magazine on the second anniversary of its founding, a task I accept
with a special pride.
Here at For the Best-The Woodlands-Magazine, words have a certain power and endurance only comprehended by you, the
readers and special collaborators.
Each one of our semi-monthly editions features articles and stories that are intended to transmit positive energy. Our editorial
team fully believes that our thoughts, attitudes and actions follow the words we have chosen to use.
For that reason, we have invited some of our friends, who in one way or another have become a part of our stories to join us in
the celebration of our second anniversary, by choosing one powerful word that best describes The Woodlands as a community.
This is how we will celebrate this milestone and joyfully surprise our readers by expressing how much we love our life here in
The Woodlands.
I would like to give thanks for all your support to: the editorial staff, the photographers, design and layout department, and all
others whose valuable contributions make the difference in every edition.
In this publication, we feature various current themes. We have Nancy Almodovar, who for the last 13 years as Director General
of Nan and Company Properties has established herself and her firm amongst the elite of the area realtors.
Considering the importance of evaluating all options regarding our life projects, and recognizing the importance of seeking good
advice regarding making the move here to the United States, we again invite Juan Carlos Martinez, the President of Rhino Pro
and an immigrant success story.
Many of us arrive in this country unaware of requirements and legislation that can affect our financial well-being. Peter D. Nett,
Financial Advisor, speaks to us about estate planning.
Dr. Sandra How, Anti-aging Medicine Specialist, alerts us about weight gain and a possible cause for hormonal imbalance.
The Houston Symphony, directed by the well-known Colombian maestro Andres Orozco-Estrada and the Young Philharmonic
of Colombia, a project of the Bolivar Davivienda Foundation, shared the stage and offered a series of magnificent concerts in the
United States. We congratulate and encourage these organizations to continue this great effort in support of these young talents.
Photography to me is one of the most important components of our memories. Writing without images is definitely not “my
thing”. An image’s color fills me, its magic attracts me, and I am always surprised by that moment’s agility and beauty captured
by the lens. Capturing those faces, juxtaposing color and magic enables us to live the moment without being there, allowing us
to dream and fly and realize the grandeur of God’s creation. The re-known photographer Oscar
Coral, allows us to delight in these images in: “A Carnaval of Unique Faces” from the Carnaval at
Pasto, designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Once again, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you, for the great support you
have given me. We hope to continue celebrating life – always.

La fotografía para mí es uno de los componentes más importantes de nuestros recuerdos. Escribir sin imágenes, sin duda no es “lo mío”. El
color de una imagen me llena, su magia me atrae, y siempre estoy sorprendida por la agilidad de ese momento y la belleza capturada por el
lente. Capturar esos rostros y plasmar su gentileza de color y magia, es vivir sin estar presente en ese instante, es darse el permiso de volar
y recordar cuan grande es la creación de Dios.
El reconocido fotógrafo Oscar Coral, nos permite deleitarnos con estas imágenes en: “Un carnaval de rostros irrepetibles”. El Carnaval en
Pasto, designado por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
Una vez más, me gustaría expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos ustedes, por el gran apoyo que me han dado. Esperamos seguir

Few things can strike more fear into the hearts of
parents than to hear from the pediatrician that their
child has a heart murmur.
Pocas cosas pueden ocasionar más miedo en los corazones
de los padres, que el escuchar al pediatra decirles que su
hijo tiene un soplo en el corazón.
“There’s a lot of anxiety associated with the diagnosis,”
says Faustino Ramos, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist
who is newly affiliated with Memorial Hermann
The Woodlands Hospital and is also affiliated with
Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and on the
faculty of UTHealth Medical School.
“Hay una gran ansiedad asociada con este diagnóstico”,
dice Faustino Ramos, MD, cardiólogo pediátrico quien
ha sido recientemente afiliado en el Memorial Hermann
Hospital The Woodlands y también está afiliado con el
Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital y en la facultad

The most common conditions treated by pediatric cardiologists are new
heart murmurs and children experiencing chest pain, palpitations and
episodes of dizziness. “When I explain that their child’s particular murmur
is harmless and doesn’t require treatment or any limitation of physical
activity, they’re grateful and relieved,” adds Dr. Ramos.
A pediatric cardiologist is trained to provide care for diseases and
abnormalities of the heart and circulatory system in patients ranging in age
from fetuses to older teenagers, who have everything from arrhythmias
to critical cardiac illness. These physicians also educate kids and parents
about a heart diagnosis and explain the care they may need to get better.
With the epidemic of obesity in children, pediatric cardiologists are
treating more and younger kids with high triglycerides, high cholesterol
and hypertension.
Until recently, specialists like pediatric cardiologists have been
clustered at academic medical centers like the Texas Medical Center.
Having full-time pediatric cardiology at Memorial Hermann The
Woodlands adds a new level of convenience for the families who live
in the surrounding communities.
“We can manage most pediatric heart conditions right here in The
Woodlands” Dr. Ramos says.“If a child requires a cardiac catheterization or
heart surgery, we can arrange a seamless transfer to Children’s Memorial
Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center by Memorial Hermann
Life Flight® and the Neonatal or Pediatric Transport Team. All medical
records are shared between the two hospitals. We provide excellent
continuity of care because we’re all part of the same team.”
A pediatric cardiologist may also be called to consult in the Family Birthing
Center, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Emergency Center and the
pediatric unit at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.The doctor attends
to patients before and after surgery to monitor their hearts, following
them to the ICU, then seeing them back in the clinic for follow-up.
“I was fortunate to participate in the care of several babies born with
heart conditions while I was working in the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit during my pediatric residency,” Dr. Ramos says. “I appreciated the
role of the pediatric cardiologist in coordinating care with the various
specialties and helping families through a very difficult time.”
A pediatric cardiologist also screens children for heart conditions
that may prevent them from taking medication for attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and works in cooperation with area
schools to provide sports participation screening and follow-up for
kids who need additional testing after the initial screen. Each child’s
pediatrician is kept apprised of all diagnoses and treatments.

Las enfermedades más comunes tratadas por los cardiólogos pediátricos
son nuevos soplos cardíacos y niños que sufren de dolor en el pecho,
palpitaciones y episodios de mareo. “Cuando les explico que el soplo
particular de su hijo es inofensivo y que no requiere tratamiento
o cualquier limitación de la actividad física, los padres se ven muy
agradecidos y aliviados”, añade el Dr. Ramos.
El cardiólogo pediátrico está capacitado para brindar atención a las
enfermedades y anomalías del corazón y el sistema circulatorio en
pacientes de edades comprendida entre los fetos a los adolescentes
mayores, que tienen de todo, desde arritmias hasta enfermedad cardiaca
crítica. Estos médicos también educan a los niños y padres acerca de un
diagnóstico de corazón y explican los cuidados que necesiten para una
mejoría. Con la epidemia de la obesidad en los niños, los cardiólogos
pediátricos están tratando a mas niños y mas pequeños, con niveles altos
de triglicérios, hipertensión y el colesterol alto.
Hasta hace poco, los especialistas en cardiólia pediátrica se han agrupado
en los centros médicos académicos, como el Centro Médico de Texas.
Al tener cardiología pediátrica de tiempo completo en el Memorial
Hermann The Woodlands, se añade un nivel mas de comodidad para
las familias que viven en las comunidades cercanas.
“Podemos manejar la mayoría de las condiciones del corazón pediátricos
aquí en The Woodlands”, dice el doctor Ramos. “Si un niño requiere
un cateterismo cardíaco o cirugía cardiaca, podemos organizar una
transferencia sin problemas al Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital,
en el Texas Medical Center por el Memorial Hermann Life Flight® y
el equipo de transporte neonatal o pediátrico. Todos los expedientes
médicos son compartidos entre los dos hospitales. Ofrecemos una

Un cardiólogo pediatra también puede ser llamado a consultar en el

The Woodlands. El médico atiende a los pacientes antes y después de
la cirugía para controlar su corazón, después de ellos en la UCI, y luego
verlos de nuevo en la clínica para darles seguimiento.
“Tuve la suerte de participar en el cuidado de varios bebés, que nacen
con condiciones cardíacas, mientras yo estaba trabajando en la Unidad
de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales durante mi residencia en pediatría”,
dice el doctor Ramos. “Me gustó el papel del cardiólogo pediátrico en
la coordinación de la atención a las diversas especialidades y ayudar a las
familias un momento muy difícil.”
Un cardiólogo pediatra también examina a los niños por condiciones
cardíacas que pueden impedir que tomen medicamentos para el
trastorno de hiperactividad y déficit de atención (TDAH), y trabaja
en cooperación con las escuelas de la zona para ofrecer exámenes de
participación en deportes y seguimiento de los niños que necesitan
pruebas adicionales después del examen inicial. El Pediatra de cada niño
es mantenido al tanto de todos los diagnósticos y tratamientos.
