By Sonya Smith, Ed.D., Assistant Principal On May 22, HMSA was recognized as a Gold Ribbon School by the California Department of Education. According to the Department’s news release, “The Gold Ribbon awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.” This includes the Common Core State Esau Berumen Standards for English language arts and mathematics. Principal State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlaksen described Gold Ribbon schools as “academically successful, vibrant, and innovative centers of learning and teaching that provide great examples of the things educators are doing right – embracing rigorous academic standards, providing excellence and creativity in teaching, and creating a positive school climate.” Requirements for the Gold Ribbon application included a description of a model program, strategies for implementation and monitoring, connections to the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) goals, and data to support its effectiveness. HMSA’s application highlighted the school-wide and college-going culture designed to increase college enrollment rates for student populations that are underrepresented at four-year institutions. The target areas included closing the achievement gap and providing education supports for all students, regardless of their race or ethnicity; family income; and academic proficiency or special needs status. Implementation strategies focused on five areas: school climate, social/emotional/behavioral support, data-driven decision making, professional development, and parent involvement. Data from both CSU Analytics and the National Clearinghouse shows that HMSA alumni are enrolling in, progressing at, and graduating from four-year institutions at rates higher than the national averages. HMSA was also recognized as a Title I Academic Achieving School at the May 22 ceremony. According to the news release, “This additional recognition is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds that assist in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty line.” Not one to rest on his laurels, Principal Berumen will continue to challenge HMSA’s staff to repeat a constant cycle of reflection in order to ensure program improvement and student success. Kornblum Elementary 3620 W. El Segundo Blvd., Hawthorne, CA 90250 • 310/970-4294 • www.hsdkornblum.org Seuss Spirit Kornblum Elementary School honored Dr. Seuss with a spirit week. The campus was decorated with balloons, banners, and characters from Dr. Seuss books. Some classrooms had their entrances decorated for the Dr. Seuss theme. Each day there was a theme from a Dr. Seuss book. On Monday, the students, staff, and parent volunteers wore green for Green Eggs and Ham. Tuesday was Crazy Hat Day for Cat in the LaTima Jones Hat. Wednesday was Twin Day, which related to the characters Principal Thing 1 and Thing 2. Thursday was Crazy Socks Day for Fox in Socks. On Friday, everyone wore pajamas for our lunchtime read-alouds. Students sat on the grass on colored parachutes to eat their picnic lunch. District administrators, parents, and teachers read Dr. Seuss books to students. The students loved having their lunch picnic style and enjoyed the literature. The goal of the week was to instill a love for literature, and the Kornblum Cardinals accomplished it. We look forward to this celebration next year. The Academy is a bilingual program offered to both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students in which the children learn how to read, write, and speak in both languages. Emphasis on Spanish instruction in the early grades allows Michael Collins English-speaking students ample exposure to the target Principal language, Spanish. English reading is introduced in grade three. Spanish speakers have the opportunity to expand their vocabulary and build a strong base in their first language, which enables them to be more successful as they begin to acquire English orally, and later as they transfer their reading and writing skills into English. The classrooms look like any other, with colorful student work lining the walls, and the sound spelling cards posted. The only difference is that all of the materials are in Spanish. The social interaction that takes place helps each student develop their target language. They truly learn from one another to develop high levels of confidence and self-esteem through their study of the two languages. Students further their cultural learning by participating in weekly Spanish dance classes. Learning comes alive as the beauty of both languages is explored through literature, dance, and song. We are very proud of the students, parents, and staff members at the TWBI Academy. If you would like more information, you can visit www.hawthorne. k12.ca.us and scroll to the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion link. 6 www.schoolnewsrollcall.com Passion for the Arts By Stacey Ezewiro, Literacy Coach Wildcat student performances take center stage! Our first spotlight shines on Mrs. Cousineau and select third–graders. Their talents in reading music and playing the recorder were displayed at a recital for family and friends. In Mr. Atienza’s Poetry Performance class, third–graders performed dramatic skits of poems written by Shel Silverstein. Angela Ortiz They used props that sparked laughter from the audience of Principal parents and teachers. Their enthusiasm for the arts proves the importance of allowing students more opportunities to develop their creativity. More performances continue in our Performing Arts Workshop. Third– through fifth-grade students performed an excerpt from the play Annie. They received training in voice exercises and stage presence. Each performance showcased solo singing performances from Rachel Cervantes and Anahi Pintado. Our year has been filled with amazing opportunities for students to sing, dance and act. We look forward to adding to our performing arts program in the upcoming year. Mr. Atienza’s poetry performance class. York Elementary Zela Davis Elementary 11838 S. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade were fortunate to participate in a variety of enrichment activities throughout the year. Our kindergarten students showed their patriotism as they Kathy Carbajal sang for their parents to celebrate the end of the “Red, White, Principal and Blue” Imagine It! unit. In addition, they performed at monthly HPA meetings during which they sang their hearts out for their friends and family. The kindergarten through second-grade students were also introduced to the spectacular world of music and dance through Music N Motion. Each week the students were introduced to basic elements of movement and dance. They also created music through the use of various instruments. First-grade students were able to participate in a program through Dream a World, which helped our “Young Masters” inspire, explore, and discover how to perceive their surroundings and experience other cultures. The curriculum “Secrets of the Heart” also taught our students how to value friendship and be kind to one another. Finally, our school choir is composed of primary and upper-grade students. The choir is led by Mrs. Sakata, Ms. Garza, and Mrs. Chrisman. Students worked diligently to learn a variety of songs and dances. They take pride when performing for their peers and their parents at our monthly assemblies. Through the use of music, dance, theater, and art, our students have demonstrated how much more confident they are in everything they do. A Few of York’s Outstanding Staff.
