Today’s Gospel Reflection: Mark 6:1-6a
M
FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST
ark’s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus
are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is
amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or
ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’ two‑fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the
midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the
day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant
expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection
on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must
expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE FEAST OF ST. MARIA GORETTI
July 6 marks the death anniversary of the patron saint of our parish, Maria Goretti, and is celebrated
throughout the Church as her feast day. However, because this date celebrates our parish patroness,
the day takes on the elevated rank of solemnity within our parish community – a celebration of greatest importance and significance to our parish.
Why is the feast day of St. Maria Goretti important to us?
This day is not just a day to show local pride. Rather, the name of our parish is part of the spirituality of our parish. We have
a patroness in heaven to honor, to ask for help, and to live up to. The life of Maria Goretti can be an inspiration for all of us.
What we know of Maria Goretti – the triumph of forgiveness…
Maria was born in 1890 to an extremely poor Italian farm family. Her father died when she was a young girl, and she became
responsible for household duties while her mother worked on the farm. Despite poverty and deprivation, Maria had a beautiful, cheerful disposition and lovingly cared for the younger children. One day, while everyone was working in the fields far
from the house, 12-year old Maria was alone outside doing some mending. No one heard her cries for help when Alessandro,
the son of the landowner, dragged her into the house and attempted to rape her. Maria resisted Alessandro, telling him that he
was offending Jesus. Alessandro stabbed Maria fourteen times. As she lingered near death and the local priest came to bring
her Holy Communion, Maria told the priest that she had forgiven Alessandro. Maria died July 6, 1902. Alessandro was sentenced to prison. Eight years later, Maria appeared to him in a vision. She was standing in a field of flowers wearing a white
dress and holding lilies in her hand. Alessandro had a conversion of heart and became a Capuchin friar after his release from
prison. Maria was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Present at her canonization were both Maria’s mother and
Alessandro. The woman who gave Maria Goretti life and the man who took it away celebrated together the triumph of forgiveness.
St. Maria Goretti is the patron saint of youth, young women, purity, and people who have been abused.

esus was a small-town boy. Everyone in Nazareth knew him and
his whole family, even all the cousins. He was the carpenter,
Mary’s boy, so when he spoke and taught with authority
in the synagogue they “took offense at him.” How dare
he? In Jesus’ world, you could work harder and become
better off, but once a carpenter always a carpenter.
Jesus did not press them, just as we cannot force belief
on other people. For parents whose grown children have drifted away
from the Church, it is tempting to pressure them to come back. Sadly,
this may increase the distance and cause arguments. However some
people are just waiting to be asked. True stories abound of men or
women who attend Mass for years with their Catholic family, even
giving generously to the parish, yet never take that final step into the
community until someone—and it could be you—asks, “Would you like

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
n the sixteenth century, the Council of Trent, which was otherwise devoted
to liturgical uniformity, was very tolerant of age‑old marriage customs. The
Council singled out “praiseworthy” customs and hoped they would be retained.
The Second Vatican Council likewise asked for a careful evaluation of customs, admitting that not everything about wedding practice is “praiseworthy.”
In our revised liturgy, all of the prayers consistently stress the equality of the
partners. Some familiar customs do not match this insight. Often, the groom
remains hidden in a sacristy while the bride, accompanied only by her father,
enters with her attendants. This is hardly equality, especially if it appears that
her father is “giving her away” to her husband. This is a familiar enough scene,
but increasingly couples are called to a different practice. Symbols and signs
carry and communicate meaning. The challenge for couples today is to match
the meaning to the symbol, and for the couple to be authentic in all they do
and say on the day of their wedding. Having bride and groom both take part
fully and equally in the entrance procession is exactly the kind of
“praiseworthy” practice we’ve been looking for!

HEALTH CORNER
To add strength to leg muscles and get a cardiovascular workout at the same
time, try climbing plain old stairs. This can be done at home, in your office,
apartment building, or on stair-climbing machines in the gym. Climbing two
steps at a time is good for building the quadriceps (thigh muscles) and the
gluteus (butt). Going down steps builds strength in the quadriceps and to a
lesser extent, the hamstrings.
HUMOR
— A priest was in his office smoking a cigar as he prayed the Divine Office.
His secretary noticed him smoking and asked if that was permissible. The
priest responded "I don't know, I've never asked. I'll ask my superior tomorrow." The next day, he reported to his secretary that "I asked my superior, and
he said, 'Of course it's okay to pray while you smoke!'".

Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Marcos 6,1-6a
FE EN JESUCRISTO
E
l incidente que nos cuenta san Marcos en el Evangelio de hoy se basa en un doble asombro: primero, los vecinos y parientes de Jesús se asombran de verlo enseñar en la sinagoga con tanta sabiduría, y de ver su poder
para hacer milagros. Y Jesús, a su vez, se extraña de la incredulidad de aquella gente, que no pone su fe en él, no
porque hallen alguna falta en su enseñanza o en su ministerio, sino porque conocen sus orígenes y su familia.
Aquí, como en muchos otros incidentes de su Evangelio, Marcos nos deja ver un aspecto bastante íntimo de la
parte humana de la doble naturaleza de Jesús. Para reforzar lo que quiere que veamos, Marcos nos cuenta cómo
Jesús vuelve a su pueblo, y nos hace notar que está allí entre sus familiares. Y de la gente de quienes más esperaba es que menos recibe. En la época en que estaba escribiendo su Evangelio, san Marcos trataba de enseñar
una lección muy importante para la casa de Israel, el Dios de la Alianza esperaba encontrar la fe más intensa en la casa de Israel, pero muchas
veces allí fue donde menos la encontró. Y es bueno que reflexionemos sobre esto, nosotros que hoy día somos el Pueblo de Dios. Para que la
Sabiduría de Cristo continúe en este mundo, y para que nuestras vidas sean signos de su poder, Jesús espera hallar, y tiene que hallar, una gran

FESTIVIDAD DE SANTA MARIA GORETTI
El 6 de julio marca el aniversario del fallecimiento de nuestra santa patrona María Goretti y se celebra a través de
la Iglesia como su día festivo. Este día es de gran importancia y significancia para nuestra comunidad. El 6 de
julio este año cae en lunes, el día que se celebra la Solemnidad de Santa María Goretti.
¿Por qué la fiesta de Santa María Goretti es tan importante para nosotros?
Este día no es solamente un día de orgullo para nuestra comunidad, sino que el nombre de nuestra parroquia es parte de la espiritualidad de
la misma. Tenemos una patrona en el cielo para honrarla, para pedirle ayuda y para vivir siguiendo su ejemplo. La vida de María Goretti es
una inspiración para todos nosotros, especialmente para todos los jóvenes.
¿Qué sabemos de María Goretti? ¿Del triunfo del perdón?
María Goretti nació en 1890, en el ceno de una familia italiana extremadamente pobre. Su padre murió cuando ella era una niña y muy chiquita tuvo qué hacerse responsable de los quehaceres domésticos mientras su madre trabajaba en el campo. No obstante su pobreza y privaciones, María Goretti tuvo una disposición hermosa y amorosa por los niños. Un día, mientras todos estaban trabajando en el campo, María
Goretti, de 12 años de edad, se encontraba sola haciendo labores en el patio de la casa. Nadie la escuchó gritar pidiendo ayuda cuando Alessandro, el hijo del dueño de la propiedad, la empujó dentro de la casa intentando violarla. María Goretti luchó contra él diciéndole que él
estaba ofendiendo a Jesús. En la resistencia de ella, Alessandro la hirió catorce veces con un cuchillo. En su lecho de muerte, cuando el
sacerdote del pueblo vino a darle la Sagrada Comunión, María Goretti le confesó que ella ya había perdonado a Alessandro. María Goretti
falleció el 6 de julio de 1902. Alessandro fue sentenciado a prisión. Ocho años más tarde, María Goretti se le apareció a Alessandro en una
visión. Ella estaba parada en un campo de flores vestida de blanco y con un ramo de azucenas en sus manos. Alessandro tuvo una conversión de corazón, que al salir de la prisión se congregó como monje Capuchino. María Goretti fue canonizada como Santa por el Papa Pío
XII en 1950. En su canonización estuvieron presentes la madre de María Goretti y Alessandro. La mujer que le dio la vida y el hombre que
se la quitó, celebraron juntos el triunfo del perdón.
Santa María Goretti es la santa patrona de la juventud, de las jovencitas, de la pureza, y de gente que ha sido abusada.
Santa María Goretti, ¡ruega por nosotros!

amable y hospitalario sin condiciones. Habla con las personas
antes y después de la Misa. Ofrécete a ser una de las personas
que saluda a las personas al llegar o únete al ministerio que
ayuda a los católicos que regresan a la Iglesia. Sé el patrocinador de alguien en el programa RICA. Da la bienvenida a
las personas que se mudan a tu vecindad.

Queremos agradecer a todos los que hicieron que el Festival
Anual de 2015 fuera un gran éxito. Este evento se desarrolló sin contratiempos con los puestos de juegos, comida, finanzas, bingo, voluntarios, donantes, sacerdotes, religiosas y coordinadores de entretenimiento, y sobre todo a
las personas que asistieron a nuestro festival y contribuyeron con su presencia y apoyo.
El éxito de nuestro festival no hubiera sido posible sin su esfuerzo
y organización. Realmente se sintió el compromiso sincero de todos los involucrados. Esperamos poder seguir sirviendo a nuestra parroquia y continuar
trabajando juntos para nuestra comunidad.
