CONFESSIONS SATURDAY 8:30 am to 10:00 am W e are now underway with our Lenten journey, en route to the annual commemoration of the Paschal Mystery of our Lord. It's an intense season, requiring us to convert our hearts to a more profound relationship with the God of Heaven and earth. Conversion is not easy work! It requires struggle and sacrifice. It also requires intense prayer, so as to make the ground of our lives fertile for the new life of grace that will surely come from such follow-through. Many times we are quite resistant to such a challenge. But get ready! During Lent we will hear blunt and piercingly challenging messages from Holy Scripture that invite, if not demand, the personal alignment of our lives with the holy will of the Lord. The Word of God minces no words. Our Lenten liturgies will call us on the carpet, challenging us to embrace more authentically our faith in Jesus Christ. Are we ready to recall all that Jesus did for us, so that our lives may show our loving gratitude? Disappointing it would be that we would NOT do what we can do to renew of our hearts and souls, the inner fiber of our core, especially during this Lenten season, to enliven our lives with a deepened appreciation for our Lord's death and Resurrection. After all, it was for our sake that He came from Heaven to pave the way for us to find life, especially our way to eternal life. It is mind-boggling to think so transcendentally, because we are so often only accustomed to thinking exclusively in terms of the here and now. We often, unfortunately, look at life ephemerally, i.e, on the skin level. Our upcoming time-change in a couple weeks coincidentally reminds us that, as we will soon lose an hour of sleep, that loss (change) is not necessarily an end, but the dawn of new light and length of days. The faithful focus of Jesus against His temptations in the desert also reminds us of the strength that came from sacrificial fasting, prayer, and the benefits of resolute fulfillment of the Heavenly Father's will. Lent requires of us a similar time of intense spiritual testing and purification. Sincerely embracing this calling, we ultimately will find the path to new life. If we are honest about it, we each deal with temptations on a daily basis. Having a clear conscience, experiencing peace in our hearts, and seeing life in the light of eternity require of us a certain stalwart dedication to do what is right, to do things Jesus' way; in short, to be the People of God we have been set aside to be. Yet, we can all attest how difficult this clarion calling is. We regularly resist change. We deny our need for conversion. We submarine our spiritual neediness, pretending that it is not there. As such, we refuse to make the interior journey toward conversion and newness of life. We, therefore, miss out on so much of what God has in store for us. Let us maximize this Lenten season through increased charity. Let us purify our lives through increased prayer, sacrifices, and works of charity. Let us purify our lives from things that hasten the darkness, so that we may enjoy the dawn of new light and the length of days. Muchas veces somos bastante resistentes a tal desafío. 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org SACRED STEPS: Follow us on Facebook and Twitter! Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Copyright © J. S. Our next Holy Hour and Solemn Benediction will take place on Tuesday night, February 24th at 7:00pm. All are welcome! This past week, our parish ordered the production of a marble sculpture of Saint Therese of Lissieux, France, our patroness, known as the Little Flower. As our parish and school prepares to celebrate their 90th anniversaries, we will soon be building a grotto in honor of St. Therese, as well as a memorial brick patio, as part of a lovely outdoor oratory near the front doors of the parish office. Ground-breaking will take place just after Easter, and the dedication ceremony will take place on the feast of Saint Therese, October 1st, 2015. You will hear more about the unveiling ceremony as we approach the end of the summer. Meanwhile, bricks can be purchased for $125, and memorializations and sponsorships are still available through the Advancement Office. We are looking for approximately $9,000 to complete the purchase and delivery of the statue. We are also looking for donations up to $22,000 to cover the remaining expenses of the grotto and the surrounding landscaping. Cement prayer benches ($600 each) can also be memorialized as well. Contact Jorge Perez at 305-446-9950 for more information. Pre-eminent among the liturgies of the Catholic Church are the ones that take place during Holy Week. Be sure to join us for these solemn occasions, beginning Palm Sunday, March 29th. There will be an evening of Confessions on Monday, March 30th. Our annual Tenebrae Service of Darkness will take place on Wednesday, April 1st at 8:00pm. Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper with Eucharistic Procession will take place on Thursday, April 2nd at 8:00pm. Good Friday has services at 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, and 8pm. Check the bulletin for language schedule. The spectacular Easter Vigil, which includes the blessing of the Easter Fire, the candle-light Liturgy of the Word, and the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation will take place on Saturday, April 4th at 8pm. Easter Sunday includes our regular Mass schedule with the beautiful sights, fragrances, and sounds of Easter. Following the 9:00am and 10:30am Masses, there will be an Easter Egg hunt for the children. Join us, as we rejoice in Christ, our Light. DAY OF PRAYER FOR SYNOD Archbishop Joseph E.
