December 13, 2015 Third Sunday Of Advent St. Joseph Church, 7240 W. 57th St., Summit, Illinois, 60501-1324 Fr. Bob’s Briefs Have you ever not seen a family member or friend for a while and had wait to see them again? What did you feel? We feel longing and desire to see the people we love. As the days come closer to seeing them again, what do we feel? We feel great anticipation. As we wait for them once again at the airport, train station, or at home, what do we feel as we are waiting to see them very soon? We feel great joy and gladness growing in our hearts. This feeling of gladness and joy is the feeling that we celebrate today. Today, celebrate the third Sunday of Advent, which is called “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete comes from the Latin verb gaudere, which means “to rejoice or to be glad.” The third Sunday of Advent gets its name from the entrance antiphon of the Mass: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near,” which comes from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians (4:4-5). On Gaudete Sunday, the season of Advent shifts is focus. Whereas the first two weeks of Advent we heard the message that “the Lord is coming,” beginning on Gaudete Sunday, we hear the message that “the Lord is near.” Thus, we are filled with rejoicing at the nearness of Christ. This sift is reflected in the lighting of different colored candle on our Advent wreath. A lighter color (rose) is used on Gaudete Sunday, and we light the rose candle because it represents the joy that we feel our rejoicing that the goal of the Advent season is getting closer: the coming of Christ is near! This shift in the second half of Advent also emphasizes a lighter tone and a feeling of joyous anticipation. Just as we begin to feel more anxious and joyous at the coming a family member or friend, whom we have not seen in a while, so, too, we begin to feel more joyous and glad anticipation at the near coming of Jesus. On this Gaudete Sunday, we hear, once again, from St. John the Baptist, who is telling the crowds by the Jordan to change their lives because the Lord is near. We hear how the hearts of the people were filled with great expectation. The beautiful image that you see is a fresco painted by the Florentine artist, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Preaching of St. John the Baptist (1490). The artist wonderfully illustrates the words that we heard in today’s gospel. John the Baptist stands in the middle, and all the people gathered around him are looking at John and listening to him. No one is paying any attention to the figure standing behind John the Baptist, in the upper left corner of the scene. This figure is Christ. How Ghirlandaio arranges this scene is fantastic! Although standing behind and to the side of John, Jesus is almost the same size as John, which illustrates Christ’s preeminence to John and His nearness, proximity. Christ is greater than the Baptist and Christ is very close! Ghirlandaio superbly paints Christ into the scene to illustrate how near Christ truly is, yet no one is aware of Christ! We don’t want to be like the people in this crowd. We don’t want to be unaware of the nearness of Christ to our lives. This is why we need the season of Advent. We, too, want our hearts to be filled with great expectation at the nearness of Jesus’ coming. This Tuesday, December 15, we will have our Advent Reconciliation Service. Confessions will be available in English and Spanish on December 15. You are invited to celebrate this sacrament as we prepare for the near coming of Jesus. Pray for peace around the world. May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus! JOSEPH SCHOOL COUNCIL “ESSENTIALS” DRIVE In the spirit of teaching our children to give to those who are less fortunate than they, we are hosting an “Essentials” drive for adults with disabilities. We are asking each of our school children to bring in a toiletry item for either men or women. These can include items such as deodorant, mouthwash, toothbrush and toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, brushes and combs. Items need to be new and still in packaging or with tags. These items will be assembled into Christmas Stockings by our Student Council and will be delivered to St. Coletta’s of Illinois which provides support in the areas of: residential programs, educational programs, medical care and vocational services to children and adults with developmental disabilities (www.stcolettail.org). We are working with the Residential Services Program which is designed to provide quality housing and independent living services to people with disabilities to promote maximum community integration. The focus of the program is on participating in community activities, patronizing local businesses, and learning to understand the value of being part of the community. The adult residents at St. Coletta’s are many times wards of the state and many do not have family to help with their basic needs like food, most of the rest of their needs are met through donations. For many, their only chance at receiving any gifts for Christmas is through the generosity of people who recognize the need and are willing to donate a gift. Although the residents of St. Coletta’s are adults, there are a number of them who the developmental age of a child. Please return your items no later than tomorrow, Monday, Dec. 14, to St. Joseph School so that we can get them delivered in time for Christmas. THANK YOU! Pokazuje to bliskość Pana. Sobota, 19 grudnia 2015 Vivat Jesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
