T
he day the two planes crashed
into the Twin Towers, Juan
Mariel Alcántara Peña made his
decision.
He would join the United States Army.
Alcántara had moved to Washington Heights
with his family from the Dominican Republic
when he was just 5 years old. Growing up in
Northern Manhattan, he served as a mentor to
friends and peers.
“Everywhere my brother went, he would
always smile,” recalled Fredelinda Peña,
Alcántara’s sister.
“Such a spirit, soul, energy allowed him to be
part of an ongoing battle to fight.”
Though Alcántara had not yet become a U.S.
citizen, the terrorist acts of September 11th
moved him to enlist at 19.
Three years later, he was on active duty in
Iraq when a bomb detonated and killed him and
two fellow servicemen.
He was 22.
This past December 16th, 2014, President
Barack Obama signed into law the designation
of the Inwood Post Office in honor of Corporal
Juan Mariel Alcántara
Peña in uniform.

the legislation, and with the aid of Senators
Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, the
bill unanimously passed in both chambers.
“We wanted to make sure people
don’t forget those who sacrificed for this
community and this country,” said Rangel.
“We honor a man who did not
come to the United States to be a
soldier, but nevertheless jumped
at the opportunity to serve in the
United States Armed Forces,” he
noted. “Corporal Alcántara was a
kind-hearted individual who was
always concerned with helping
others. He is a hero.”
Alcántara was also posthumously
awarded the Bronze Star Medal,
Purple Heart, and Army Good Conduct Medal,
and he was given the Army’s Commendation
Medal and U.S. naturalization.
Family members, elected officials,
veterans, and community residents gathered
at the post office at 90 Vermilyea Avenue for
the rededication ceremony on Sat., Aug. 8th.

commented, “This man sacrificed for the
freedom of all here.”
A white tent shielded attendees from the
bright sun, though little could conceal the
high level of emotion. The program was, at
turns, somber and celebratory, and featured
speakers offering personal reminiscences;

Aug. 6th.
Beyond ensuring that the home team
remain in first place in the American
League East, Girardi had another cause in
mind during his visit to the Lasker Pool at
110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.
Girardi, joined by Councilmembers
Mark Levine and Helen Rosenthal,
Department of Education and NYC Parks
officials, and anti-hunger advocates, visited
the pool to highlight the city’s free summer
meals program. Although school is out, free
healthy meals are available throughout
the summer at
hundreds of sites
across the city such
as Lasker Pool.

mobile trucks and
libraries.

regimen.

this year is because our players are very

listened intently, about the importance of
maintaining a healthy diet throughout the
year.
“One of the most important choices that
you are going to make is what you put in your
mouth every day,” he counseled.
Speakers noted that for many families,
the summer months can serve as a time of
stress and anxiety as it regards food security.
As schools let out for vacation, the meals
many children rely on during the school day
schedule come to an end, and thousands risk
being at hunger.
The program aims to ensure that a
consistent source of nutrition remains
available all year long.
Girardi lauded the collaborative efforts to
address the issue.
“No kid in our country should go hungry,”
he said.

grew up speaking Spanish
with my parents, who fled their
native Spain during its Civil War
and settled in Brooklyn.
C
I didn’t know any English when I started
kindergarten and the teacher marked me
absent for six weeks because I didn’t
understand her mangled pronunciation of my
last name. Like many of you, I struggled to
be bilingual and bicultural, trying to hold on
to my parents’ traditions while finding my
footing in their adopted land.
Today, approximately 14% of New
York City’s public school students – about
150,000 boys and girls – are English
Language Learners (ELLs), like I was
when I started school. I am proud that this
fall, the Department of Education will
open or expand Dual Language programs
across the five boroughs, offering students
the opportunity to acquire fluency in two
languages and, at the same time, foster
their respect and appreciation for multiple
cultures.
In Dual Language classes, 50% of students
are ELLs and 50% are English-proficient
students. Both groups of students receive
instruction in English and a target second
language. Among the programs is the City’s
first Japanese Dual Language classroom;
other programs include Spanish, French,
Haitian- Creole, and Mandarin.
Yo no sabía nada de inglés cuando empecé
el kínder y la maestra me marcó ausente
durante seis semanas porque no entendía la
pronunciación de mi apellido. Como muchos de
ustedes vencí muchos obstáculos para llegar a
ser bilingüe y bicultural, tratando de no perder las
tradiciones de mis padres mientras me abría mi
propio camino en la vida.

students and families in our increasingly
globalized world. Speaking multiple
languages and understanding different
cultures is an asset for students, families,
schools, and our entire City – and they’re
critical skills students will need for highly
coveted 21st century jobs.

Academic research has
demonstrated that these
programs contribute to great

of studies have shown that

they become more fluent in English. One
scientist, Ellen Bialystok, has produced
almost 40 years of research showing how
bilingualism sharpens the mind.
Dual Language programs will strengthen
our students’ language skills, teach them
about new cultures, and welcome parents
into classrooms in new ways.
As a former ELL, a lifelong educator, and
an abuela, I am excited and confident that
this initiative is a critical step forward that
will put more students on the path to college
and meaningful careers.

year. The official number of 6.3 million visitors
is the highest total since the institution began to
track its admission statistics over 40 years ago.
Among the reasons cited for the spike was
an increase in international tourism, especially

I had the distinct pleasure of attending Mayor
de Blasio’s Dominican Heritage
Ceremony on Thursday, August 6th at the
New York County Supreme Courthouse. I cannot
overstate how proud I am of being a DominicanAmerican and it was immensely gratifying to
see the dynamism of our community highlighted
by our Mayor. Mayor de Blasio dedicated a
significant portion of his speech to showcasing
the business acumen of our good friend Juan
Camilo, the founder of Dyckman Beer.

Renamed for the renowned
A
police officer, a baseball star,
an ambulance technician and
a philosophy professor.
Though they had very different careers, all
four men now share one thing in common ―
they will all have Northern Manhattan streets
named after them.
On Mon., Aug. 10, Mayor Bill de Blasio
signed legislation, co-naming four uptown
streets and intersections after local residents
of note, along with 47 other public places and
thoroughfares elsewhere in the city.
The Northern Manhattan co-namings are as
follows:
Luis De Peña Jr. Square ― intersection
of 172nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue,
Washington Heights
De Peña Jr. was an emergency medical
technician (EMT) who ran into the World
Trade Center to assist others on September 11,
2001, and later dedicated himself to working
long hours at the Ground Zero site. He died
in May 2014 of illnesses resulting from his
work at Ground Zero. De Peña Jr. was known
for hosting neighborhood children to EMT
barbecues and for his commitment to the
residents of Washington Heights and Inwood.
Albert Blumberg Way ― intersection of
168th Street and Broadway, Washington
Heights
Blumberg acted as an advisor to Mayor
David Dinkins, as well as numerous
elected officials from Northern Manhattan,
including Councilman Stanley E. Michels,
Assemblyman Herman D. Farrell Jr. and State
Senator Franz S. Leichter. He was a professor
and department chairman for the Philosophy
Department at Rutgers University in New
Jersey, and helped organize Livingston
College, Rutgers’ first residential college for
men and women. After retiring as a professor,
Blumberg was elected Assemblymember of
New York’s 71st District in 1977. He was
regarded by many as a champion of Manhattan
elected officials and leaders of Dominican
descent. He died in 1997 at age 91.
Bruce Reynolds Way ― Park Terrace
East, south of 215th Street, Inwood
Reynolds, a 15-year veteran of the Port
Authority Police Department, was killed
on September 11, 2001 while attempting
to rescue victims trapped in the World
Trade Center. Prior to serving as a police
officer, Reynolds was active in the Inwood
community as a member of the Urban Park
Rangers and helped restore Isham
Park, including its popular garden,
which was later dedicated to Bruce
Reynolds following his death at
age 41. His father, J.A. Reynolds,
still resides in Park Terrace, and
serves as caretaker of Bruce’s
Garden.

Matty Alou.
Alou was among the first
Dominican-Americans in Major
League Baseball. During a
successful 15-year career, he
played for six major league teams,
including the San Francisco Giants,

Clemente, Alou won the 1966
National League batting title with
a .342 average. He and his brothers

he Dominican Day Parade
has traditionally been
celebrated on the second Sunday
of August in honor of “La Guerra
de la Restauración” [The War of
the Restoration].
While that battle for the nation’s
independence from Spain was waged
from 1863 to1865, this year, the sense of
reinstatement – and victory – resounded
loudly through the canyon of the Avenue of
the Americas.
After a tumultuous start earlier this year in
which the previous administration had been ousted
by the State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman,
a new board of directors was installed.
They faced daunting challenges, all in short
order.

“I
was a Minisink kid.”
Assemblymember Keith Wright was
back on the block this past Sat., Aug. 8th, taking
part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of
local institution Minisink Town House.
Minisink has served as the flagship
headquarters and community center for the
New York City Mission Society for the past 50
years, and a party was in order.
The occasion also served as part of the
41st Annual Harlem Week, which heralds the
Northern Manhattan neighborhood and its rich
history of culture and art.
“We focus more than anything on education,
and in finding unique ways to make learning
a joy for kids,” explained Mission Society
President Elsie McCabe Thompson.
The block party, which boasted children’s
activities, fitness classes, wellness resources,
performances, and music spun by DJ Kool Red
Alert, drew hundreds.
“We came all the way from Brooklyn,” said
Urasia Oliver. “We are having a good time.”
As noted by organizers,
Minisink alumni include
the city’s first black
principal,
first
black
district
superintendent,
first black deputy police
commissioner,
and
a
current U.S. Congressman.
“It gives the kids a place to go,” said
Sharon Williams with daughter Jade.
“It is a wonderful day when we can
celebrate our institutions,” said Wright, who
was a frequent visitor to the center as a child.
“Minisink has touched everybody in this
neighborhood.”
“It gives the kids a place to go, and do
things,” agreed Sharon Williams.
She would know. A Harlem resident for the
past 25 years, Williams has sent two of her
children to summer programs at Minisink. Her
12-year-old daughter Jade said she had fond
memories of the experience.
“I liked it. We had trips on Fridays, art
programs, computer lab, a writing class and
free time in the gym,” said Jade, between
bites of pink cotton candy.
In addition to providing educational
and recreational activities for youngsters,
Minisink provides employment opportunities
for older youth.
“A lot of kids go to college, then come here
and work,” said Williams. Her son returned to

Ten Made in NY Fellowships is a newly
announced, year-long program that aims to
provide expanded resources and opportunities
for New Yorkers looking to to bring their
media projects to the next level. It is being
organized by the Media and Entertainment
Commissioner Cynthia López, the Made in
NY Media Center by IFP, and NYCEDC.
The Made in NY Fellowship Program seeks
to foster a diverse media industry, recognizing
that different experiences, perspectives,
and cultures are critical to advancements in
innovation and creativity. The ten Fellowships will be available to
those working on projects in documentary
filmmaking, narrative filmmaking, gaming,
post-production, animation, virtual reality,
and media/technology.
“We will help further strengthen the
city’s thriving media and entertainment
industry by supporting creative New Yorkers
of all backgrounds to share their unique
perspectives and tell their stories,” said
Commissioner López.
“Since we opened our doors in 2013, we’ve
aimed to bring together creative professionals

and entrepreneurs from different backgrounds
to express new ideas and develop innovative
ways of storytelling,” added Joana Vicente,
Executive Director of IFP and the Made in
NY Media Center by IFP. “We are proud
to be honoring that
commitment as we expand
our partnership with the

mong the many colorful
floats, dancers and elected
officials making their way along
Sixth Avenue this past Sun., Aug.
9th was a small contingent of
about 30 university students,
educators and community
members.
They carried a simple white
banner that read “We Are
All Dominicans, Somos
Todos Dominicanos.”
It was a fitting
declaration at the
largest
celebration
of Dominican and
Dominican-American
heritage.
But the group, which
bills itself “We are All
Dominican” (WAAD),
sought not only to assert pride, but also to
raise awareness on an socio-political and
cultural issue that has roiled members of

pequeño contingente de alrededor

Llevaban una pancarta blanca sencilla en
la que se leía: “We Are All Dominicans, Somos
Todos Dominicanos”.
Era una declaración apropiada en la mayor
celebración de la herencia dominicana y
dominicano-estadounidense.
Pero el grupo, que se autonombra “We are All
Dominican” (WAAD), buscaba no sólo afirmar el
orgullo, sino también crear conciencia sobre un
problema sociopolítico y cultural que ha agitado
a los miembros de la comunidad dominicana y
haitiana, como señalaba la pancarta con letras

Los países vecinos comparten la isla caribeña

international criticism.
The Dominican government has been
accused of discriminating against Haitian
migrants who cross the border for work
and seeking to denationalize hundreds of
thousands Dominicans of Haitian descent
who have long lived in the Dominican
Republic without legal residency.
The regularization process thus far has seen
only 290,000 of the estimated 450,000 eligible
individuals file with the government.
While reports indicate that mass
deportations have not taken place, human
rights activists insist that they will remain
vigilant, and they have urged supporters
to continue to apply pressure on the
Dominican government to reverse course.
The U.S. State Department estimates
that 10,000 to 20,000 children of Haitian
descent are born each year in the Dominican
Republic.

por nuestra visión de una sociedad dominicana
más incluyente, una que no margine ni prive de
derechos a sus ciudadanos más vulnerables.
Marchar fue un acto de sanación.
Como dominicanos-americanos tenemos
que hacer un mayor esfuerzo para entablar
un diálogo con nuestras familias, amigos
y compañeros de trabajo para discutir los
puntos en común entre las discriminatorias
políticas de inmigración y ciudadanía del
gobierno dominicano y el racismo estructural
que enfrentan las comunidades negras y
morenas en los Estados Unidos. Debemos
preguntarnos continuamente cómo podemos
seguir construyendo y sanando en nuestras
comunidades.
¿Cómo eligieron qué personajes
destacar?
Elegimos conmemorar a heroínas como la
activista de derechos humanos Sonia Pierre y a
la líder agricultora rural Mamá Tingó, así como al
dirigente estatal Gregorio Luperón y el soldado
y constitucionalista Francisco Caamaño Deñó,
porque representan a diversos dominicanos que
dedicaron su vida para lograr una mejor y más
justa República Dominicana.

added Joel Berg, New York City Coalition
Against Hunger Director.
The city’s summer meals program is
available to all children and teens ages 18 and
under, and no registration or ID is required.
The program offers breakfast and lunch
through September 4th every weekday, and
some locations also offer meals on Saturdays
and Sundays.
Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15

“We really enjoy providing free, nutritious
meals to children all over the city,” said
NYC Parks Department First Deputy
Commissioner Liam Kanvanagh, adding
that free meals are available at 124 locations

meals have been provided last summer in
park facilities throughout the city.
Levine stressed the importance of
promoting the summer meals program.
“Not enough people know that in New
York City you can get free meals all summer
long,” he said. “Healthy food is so essential to
young people.”
He said the manager’s participation was
particularly meaningful for children and families.
“To have a role model like Girardi giving
the message of healthy eating is so impactful,”
said Levine. “His presence meant so much.”

will open a second Mobile Market to help
fight high levels of food insecurity and help

will distribute an average of 16,000 –

of charge, to 275 households

“I have mixed feelings,” revealed mother
María Alcántara Disla. “On one hand, I am
happy, but on the other hand, I lost my only
son.”
She was joined by Alcántara’s sisters, and
his fiancée.
Standing close by was the young corporal’s
daughter Jaylaine, born a few weeks before
her father’s death.
She never met her father – and was visibly
emotional throughout the ceremony.
Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Kleisner trained
with Alcántara. They were deployed and
fought in combat together.
“I remember a man that stood up from Day
One. El siempre sonríe [He always smiles].
He lifted us up,” he said. “We all loved him,
[and] he will always be our brother.”
Assemblymember Guillermo Linares
lauded the young man’s patriotic spirit.
“He is a symbol of the maximum sacrifice
for the freedom that we enjoy,” said Linares.
“He is a hero, not only for this community, but
for humanity.”
Rubén Darío Luna Martínez, a Congressional
representative from the Dominican Republic,
said that such valor would prove an enduring
– and inspiring – standard.
“We are very proud of him,” said Martinez.
“We are going to have him in our memory for
the rest of our lives.”
Selman concurred.
“He will always be remembered,” said the
Cónsul General.
But for Mercedes Disla, while the pomp
and circumstance were welcome, the event
offered another opportunity to recall a young
cousin she knew as humble and caring – and
gone too soon.
“It feels good that he is being recognized
for what he did for the country,” she said.
“But it is also sad, because I would like to
have him alive.”

National Thrift Store Day
ReuseNYC will join with 60 nonprofit
thrift stores and local vintage shops on
Mon., Aug. 17th to celebrate National Thrift
Store Day, by urging New Yorkers to “shop
second-hand first.” ReuseNYC, a program
of the NYC Center for Materials Reuse,
is fully funded by the city’s Department
of Sanitation. It is a membership-based
association of city nonprofit organizations
that accept and redistribute donated goods.
ReuseNYC organized the first Thrift Store
Day in New York City in 2013 to encourage
second-hand shopping and to increase public
awareness of the benefits of materials reuse.
Shopping second-hand saves consumers
money, and also reduces waste, conserves
resources, and helps to create “green” jobs.
And buying used goods from nonprofit thrift
stores supports those organizations’
important social-service missions.

ReuseNYC se unirá a 60 tiendas de segunda
mano locales sin fines de lucro y vintage, el lunes 17
de agosto, para celebrar el Día nacional de tiendas
de segunda mano, instando a los neoyorquinos a

ReuseNYC, un programa del Centro
para Materiales Reutilizables de Nueva
York, está totalmente financiado por el

Painters Recruit Apprentices Pintores contratan aprendices
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training
Committee for District Council #9 will conduct
a recruitment from September 10, 2015 through
September 23, 2015 for 50 painter, decorator,
and paperhanger apprentices, as announced
by the New York State Department of Labor.
Applications can be obtained, in person only,
from District Council #9, 45-15 36th Street,
Long Island City, NY, every business day from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., during the recruitment
period. The sponsor will be distributing 500
applications beginning Thursday, September 10
and continuing for a period of 10 business days
or until all applications have been exhausted,
whichever comes first.
The Committee requires that applicants:
•Must be at least 18 years old.
•Must have a high school diploma or a high
school equivalency diploma (such as GED or
TASC).
•Must sign an affidavit stating that they are
physically able to perform the work of a
painter, decorator, and paperhanger, which
includes:
•Lifting and carrying heavy equipment and
buckets weighing up to 70 pounds.
•Working from ladders, scaffolds, and personal
lifts at heights exceeding 100 feet.
•Working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
•Must attend a three-day orientation.
•Must be able to travel throughout the five
boroughs to reach job sites.
•Must provide military transfer card or discharge
form DD-214, if applicable.
Apprentice programs registered with the
Department of Labor must meet standards
established by the Commissioner. Under state law,
sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against
applicants because of race, creed, color, national
origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women
and minorities are encouraged
to submit applications for
apprenticeship
programs.

The Dominican government has denied
that there is a human rights crisis.
It insists that its new policies are not
motivated by race, but by the need to
regulate the influx of foreign nationals and
migrants.
We spoke with the members of the We
Are All Dominican group that marched in
Sunday’s parade.
Why was the parade an important
occasion in which to participate?
We participated in the parade as an
expression of solidarity with our Dominican
brothers and sisters of Haitian descent who
have been stripped of their citizenship and
face the threat of expulsion.
[We marched to demonstrate] the
rich diversity of the Dominican people,
particularly our Afro-Dominican heritage,
and as an affirmation that Black Lives
Matter in the U.S., in the Dominican
Republic, and around the world. We
marched for our vision for a more
inclusive Dominican society,
one that does not marginalize
and disenfranchise its most
vulnerable citizens.
Marching was an act of
healing.
As Dominican-Americans, we must make
a greater effort to engage in dialogue with
our families, friends, co-workers to discuss
the commonalities between the Dominican
government’s discriminatory immigration
and citizenship policies and the structural

We connected our struggles as
immigrants while simultaneously calling
out the disgrace that is denationalization
and expulsions. As our powerful contingent
marched and danced to the roots rhythm
of gaga/rara, we were met by cheers,
some angry/sour faces, though not as
many as we thought, and others who were
silent and hopefully contemplating our
messages. We shifted the energy along
Sixth Avenue yesterday and it was not
always comfortable, because healing work
means facing our pain. [But] the discomfort
is worth it and nothing compared to what
Dominicans of Haitian descent and Haitian
migrants being targeted face.

ourselves how we can continue to build and
heal within our communities.
How did you choose the figures to
highlight?
We chose to commemorate heroines such
as human rights activist Sonia
Pierre and rural farmers’

represent diverse Dominicans
who dedicated their lives for a
better and more just Dominican Republic.
What was the response of the crowd?
When we put out the call for a contingent
in solidarity with Dominicans of Haitian
descent and Haitian immigrants for the
Dominican Day Parade in New York City, we

Laura was raised in Brazil in a city at the nexus of the Amazon basin and the
Atlantic ocean. Strongly influenced by this aquatic labyrinth and laced network of rivers
and motion, she chose ink and
watercolor as her medium. In her
20’s, as she studied yoga and
contemporary dance, she started
processing a sense of time,
space, and internal
proprioception – knowledge of the
self in space, of the interior mind
in the body and the world. Her
work evolved a focus in the
exploration of the elements of those landscapes – the strong but soft movement of
water; the intricacy of a single leaf; the textures of a tree trunk. Eventually, only lines and
space remained.
Her work has continued to deepen into
inquiries of the elements: earth, water, fire, air and
space, their nature and tendencies, through work with
textiles, alternating brushwork and wax, pigmentation,
dyes, and fluid acrylics. She lives, works and plays in
one of New York City’s only remaining nature
environments, Inwood Hill Park.

The Mission Society established activities
in Harlem in 1920, and the organization’s staff
initially was headquartered in churches. In 1945,
the Harlem-based staff set up headquarters in a
brownstone called Minisink Townhouse, and
in 1965, a new Minisink Townhouse was built
at 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue, which has
served as the Mission Society’s primary center
in Harlem since.
“Minisink continues to be one of the jewels
of Harlem,” said City Comptroller Scott
Stringer, who presented McCabe Thompson
and the organization’s leadership with an
official commendation.
The nonprofit offers education and youth
development programs at seven New York City
public schools and four community centers in
Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and the Lower
East Side, and thousands of children and
families have come to view the organization’s
centers as a second home and a supportive and
safe environment.

There were the logistics and execution of
the parade itself, to which thousands flock to
every year.
There was also a week filled with events and
programs prior to the parade; these included
a formal banquet gala; countless media
interviews; an official reception hosted by the
Mayor and First Lady; pre-parade breakfasts;
and the establishment of a $250,000 academic
scholarship fund.
And so, they set out and made their way
forward.
The morning of Sun., Aug. 9th broke bright
and balmy, the perfect setting for a rebirth.
