CHRIST THE GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SPRING, TEXAS 1 August 2, 2015 02 de Agosto 2015 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastoral Council The pastoral council is sometimes referred to as the parish council. In fact pastoral council is a more correct term because it is the advisory council for the pastor regarding the ministry and spiritual needs of the parish. The council is consultative to the pastor. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states, “A parish is a definite community of the Christian faithful established on a stable basis within a particular church; the pastoral care of the parish is entrusted to a pastor as its own shepherd under the authority of the diocesan bishop. It is the place where all the faithful can be gathered together for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. The parish initiates the Christian people into the ordinary expression of the liturgical life; it gathers them together in this celebration; it teaches Christ’s saving doctrine; it practices the charity of the Lord in good works and brotherly love…” (CCC # 2179). The Code of Canon Law states in regards to parish pastoral councils, “...the pastor presides over it, and through it the Christian faithful along with those who share in the pastoral care of the parish in virtue of their office give their help in fostering pastoral activity. This pastoral council possesses a consultative vote only and is governed by the norms determined by the diocesan bishop” (# 536). The Pastoral Manual of the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston adds, “The pastoral council relates to the pastoral life and growth issues of the parish community. The council is to be representative of the full parish community” (A-2). There are several ways to create a pastoral council. The manner that I have chosen is called discernment. This will be a four step process including prayer, education, discernment (or thought) and commitment. We will begin with prayer. I invite everyone of you to begin praying NOW for this future pastoral council. Pray also for those whom God is calling through the Holy Spirit. As the archdiocesan pastoral manual states, I would like for the pastoral council to be completely representative of our entire parish; young and old and everyone in between as well as representatives from the various ethnicities that are represented in our parish. Let us be in prayer that those whom the Holy Spirit is calling forth may hear and understand this call and then present themselves for discernment. ANYONE can come to the various orientation, education and discernment gatherings that we will offer. From these gatherings we will all grow in knowledge and understanding of one another and more aware of the Holy Spirit’s call. There will also be a meeting to specifically and prayerfully discern those who will serve on the pastoral council. Finally we will commission the new members and begin our work together. I would like to invite you to an information orientation Tuesday, August 25 at 7 p.m. Christ the Good Shepherd come to our aid. Fr. It was overwhelming. We are incredibly proud of our young people, not only for their high level of talent, but in their dedication to CGS. I have personally never really liked referring to our youth as “the future of the Church” (though they are), only because I think it sometimes blinds us to the fact that they are such a fully active, vital part of the Church right now. Speaking for myself and Carol, I want to thank the community of CGS for your love and support, and our youth who generously pour out their love in service. These kids, each and every one of them, are awesome. Ken Morrison A BIG thank you to all the families of our summer faith formation, June and July sessions, for the food you donated to Social Ministry. This food is given out to people that stop by our church office requesting food. God Bless you for your generosity. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our bulletin sponsors and advertisers for providing our weekly bulletin at no cost to our parish. We are grateful for your continued support. As the parish continues to grow, the need for more advertisements is critical. As it is now time for renewing and acquiring new advertisements, we ask that you prayerfully consider advertising in the weekly church bulletin. You can advertise your business, promote your parish organization or place a personal ad such as “Pray for Vocations,” “Pray the Rosary,” “In Memory of Loved One.” Please contact Rey Barron at 512-577-9411 or [email protected]. Rey will be at CGS August 3rd-6th and 10th-13th.
