Happy New Year! I am always excited when August rolls around because I know that school will be starting soon.
There is nothing as wonderful as seeing and hearing those magic words: Back To School! Here at Santa Rosa
Middle School, we are looking forward to a wonderful new year.
I am very proud to introduce our new staff members, including: Allegra Buschman, Asst. Principal; Jessica FoleySanchez, Art/ Living Experience Teacher; Ami Katz, Science Teacher; Zoe Miller, English and History Teacher;
Nate Sheedy, Bridge Academy Teacher; and Kathleen Deveraux, French Teacher. All of these teachers will be
welcome additions to our faculty.
Please join me in congratulating Debra LaPrath for her recognition as a teacher who exemplifies “Excellence in
Education” She will be honored by the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce and our business and education
community on August 17th and the annual “Excellence in Education” awards banquet. We are all very proud of
Ms. LaPrath and all she does for our school and community.
It’s time to mark your calendars for several important events. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 19.
Seventh Grade Orientation is Monday, August 17, from 10:00 – 12:00. Please be sure you attend this very
important orientation. Students will receive their schedules on that day, providing their Emergency Cards are
turned in. Optional items will also be available for purchase, such as P.E. clothes, locks and planners. Eighth
grade students may pick up their schedules on August 17, from 1:00 – 3:00 if a completed Emergency Card is
returned. Optional items will also be available for purchase at that time.
I would like to acknowledge the amazing efforts of our PFSO. It is with parent support that so many activities for
families can take place here at SRMS and that support is very much appreciated by all. Please be sure to attend
our monthly meetings so you can be informed and involved. We need your support. It really does take all of us
working together to provide our students with a truly comprehensive middle school experience, complete with a
wide variety of enrichment opportunities. It is very important for families to be involved with our school
community during these very impressionable and important years. Our PFSO meetings are held the first
Wednesday of every month, at 6:30 p.m. in our school library. All parents are invited to attend. Our ELAC
meetings are also very important for the parents of our English language learners. These meetings provide
valuable information about our programs and support offered for students learning English as a second language .
In closing, I look forward to continue working at Santa Rosa Middle School in my new position as Principal. I am
very thankful to be a part of this amazing community and I appreciate you all. Please feel free to call me, email
me, or stop by for a visit. I am looking forward to meeting all of you. I can’t wait to see your new faces and
smiles.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Siempre estoy emocionado cuando agosto llega porque sé que la escuela va a empezar pronto. No hay
nada tan maravilloso como ver y escuchar esas palabras mágicas: regreso a la escuela! Aquí en Santa Rosa Middle School,
estamos mirando adelante a un maravilloso año nuevo.

Mr. Tomas Fierro
I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Fierro for twelve years, through many challenging times and changes in our
educational community. Those challenging times require the best in all of us and I have seen Mr. Fierro rise above all obstacles,
and through every decision, always with integrity and grace, earning the respect and admiration of everyone who works with
him, including staff, parents, and students. There is no doubt that Mr. Fierro reflects the best in all of us. He is a guiding light; a
source of constant support; a parent, a teacher, an administrator, and always, a leader. Mr. Fierro and I have worked side by
side, as principals, and for the past eight years, as co-administrators at Santa Rosa Middle School. He has been a professional
educator for thirty-two years, the last eight, at Santa Rosa Middle School. His years of experience, as a teacher and an
administrator, have proven to be a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and support for all of us.
I know I am the luckiest principal there is, having Mr. Fierro support everything I do, in his role as Assistant Principal at Santa
Rosa Middle School. Not only does he support me, but he exemplifies the meaning of support for everyone. Mr. Fierro is a
gentle giant, in his leadership capacity. He embraces our district management team’s vision of support for every student with his
whole heart; therefore, modeling that vision and that commitment with his daily interactions with students, families, and staff.
He is completely selfless with his efforts, always ready to make things easier for everyone else.
Educational leaders are called upon to “think on their feet,” responding to unpredictable situations every day. Mr. Fierro is
always calm in the middle of any storm. He just jumps in and intuitively knows what needs to be done. His focus is always
student centered. He truly believes in the potential of every child and is willing to do whatever it takes to help students succeed.
Mr. Fierro is dedicated to supporting the needs of all students and, in particular, has been a tremendous support for our English
Language Learners. He has developed positive relationships with students and their families, helping to bridge the gap between
home and school. He facilitates informative and meaningful ELAC meetings, as well as being an active participant in Site Council
and all Parent Club meetings. Mr. Fierro’s visibility and accessibility for parents is appreciated and admired. Parents trust him
and they seek him out, knowing that no problem, question, or concern is too large or too small for him to be of support.
One of the qualities we all most admire about Mr. Fierro is his ability to connect with every student. Every year, he learns all
of our students’ names. He greets them before school, between classes, and all day long, always with a smile and always asking
questions about their days and their hobbies. He really gets to know every student and it doesn’t take long, year after year, for
students to seek him out daily, needing that daily contact with Mr. Fierro to make their day feel safe and complete.
One of Mr. Fierro’s major responsibilities is with school discipline and school safety. He organizes and revises our School Safety
Plan every year, with input, approval, and feedback from parents, students, and staff. He has done an outstanding job of
embracing our new support team of counselors and restorative support staff, really building intervention and restorative
practices into our culture. Every disciplinary interaction with students involves looking at the whole child, supporting their
academic, social, and emotional needs. This work involves constantly teaching the behaviors we expect, modeling, reinforcing,
and repeating those efforts, even when others are exhausted. Mr. Fierro’s efforts are to be commended. There is no doubt that
many of our students are successful and carry lifelong lessons with them, due to his genuine concern for their well-being.
We are immersed in a time of change, with the implementation of common core, a focus on restorative practices, keeping up
with changing technology, preparing for new state testing, and understanding new policies that guide our work. Mr. Fierro
organizes all of our SBAC testing, which includes preparing all general and special education teachers with technology support
and individual help. Mr. Fierro has been in the forefront in all areas, always eager to learn and focus forward. He models an
open mind, curious and excited about learning. He is tireless and maintains a healthy balance of a strong work ethic and humor,
always lightening our days with his positive attitude. We can all learn from Mr. Fierro’s grace and joy in appreciating what every
day brings.
It is with pride and admiration that we all celebrate Mr. Tomas Fierro, as the 2015 Sonoma County “Middle School Assistant
Principal of the Year.”

Ha realizado un trabajo excepcional de abrazar nuestro nuevo equipo de apoyo de consejeros y personal de apoyo
restaurativo, construyendo realmente las prácticas de intervención y restauración en nuestra cultura. Cada interacción
disciplinaria con los estudiantes implica mirar el niño entero, apoyando sus necesidades académicas, sociales y
emocionales. Este trabajo consiste en enseñar constantemente los comportamientos que esperamos, modelado, refuerzo y

Debra LaPrath
To be a leader at Santa Rosa Middle School means caring for the community and working to change
the world for the better. Debra LaPrath brings this to life every day at Santa Rosa Middle School.
As the Leadership Teacher, Ms. LaPrath starts with a group of young students and leads them on the
path of community service, giving and caring for others and what it means to be a leader in this day and
age. Students from different socio-economic levels, different cultures and backgrounds all come together in
her classes wanting to help and lead. She teaches these youth the importance of reaching out to others and
what it means to give selflessly.
At Santa Rosa Middle School, Ms. LaPrath starts her students by encouraging them to look at their
school and observe how to improve and build upon what is already present. She teaches them the
importance of communication, organization and fiscal responsibility. She proves that being a leader does
not end when the students leave the classroom, but continues on throughout the day. Her students are
involved in community services all over the city. This past year, Leadership students from Santa Rosa
Middle School raised $20,000 on their own for the local Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, more than many
other businesses in town. Her students took part in raising money for other charities and took part in the
San Jose WE Day, a nationwide youth empowerment activity sponsored by We The Children.
Leadership is a significant part of our school. Students come from all over Santa Rosa to be a part of
our school because of Leadership's importance. Noontime rallies, classroom contests, and teacher
appreciation days are all led by the Leadership classes and affect the whole school positively. All this is led
by one teacher, Debra LaPrath. She performs tirelessly and selflessly for her students and for Santa Rosa
Middle School in addition to coaching the nationally ranked girls’ soccer team at Maria Carrillo High School
and badminton team at Santa Rosa High School in her spare time. Debra LaPrath is a teacher of excellence
and it is with great pride that Santa Rosa Middle School nominates her for the Excellence in Education
Award.

Ser una líder en Santa Rosa Middle School significa cuidar a la comunidad y trabajando para cambiar
el mundo para lo mejor. Debra LaPrath trae esto a la vida cada día en la escuela secundaria de Santa Rosa.
Como maestra de liderazgo, la Sra. LaPrath comienza con un grupo de estudiantes jóvenes y los lleva

A Message from the Assistant Principal…
It is my hope that everyone has had a restful and relaxing break from school. Now that August is here, it is time to
start thinking on how to prepare for the upcoming school year. As the new Assistant Principal, I will be joining a team
of wonderful teachers and staff. I look forward to supporting our students and families in the fall. I look forward to
greeting the returning students and meeting the new seventh graders. Our motto here at Santa Rosa Middle School is
Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible.
One way to insure success during middle school is to be prepared. To help parents and students in being
prepared, I have provided some information on dress code, lockers and personal property that will be helpful. These
policies were developed to encourage individual responsibility and provide a safe and focused academic learning
environment for all students. This information is included in the planner. It is very important to review all the
information in the school planner. Our goal is to have all students safe, respectful and responsible. If you have any
questions, please let me know.
Our goal is to provide a strong and rigorous academic program for every student. Every effort is made to eliminate
distractions and to maximize instructional time so that students can focus and learn during class time.
Cell Phone Policy at SRMS
Cell phones can only be used before and after school. They may not be carried by
students during the school day, even if the device is turned off. Cell phones must be kept in lockers during
the school day. Violations will result in confiscation and or further disciplinary action.
DRESS CODE
An appropriate student dress code has been established to promote a safe and academic climate, focused on the
business of school.
*Hats may NOT be worn inside classrooms, library, and other buildings.
General Student Dress applies to all students and will be strictly enforced.
1. No drug, related paraphernalia, alcohol, violence and obscene, suggestive, vulgar, sexual pictures, images or words
displayed on accessories, clothing, binders and backpacks.
2. No clothing with racist, violent or derogatory remarks toward any group or individual.
3. No gang related clothing such as bandanas of any color, hairnets, beanies, scarves, chains, jewelry, rags, belts hanging
from clothing, scripted belt buckles, shoes and shoelaces, which in the judgment of school officials, deems gang
related.
4. No professional sport team jerseys, hats or clothing unless they are SRCS School sanctioned apparel.
5. No sunglasses inside the buildings.
6. Hats may be worn only outside the buildings.
7. No saggy, baggy pants or shirts more than one size larger than the student’s normal size.
8. No skirts or shorts shorter than the student’s fingertips when arm is held straight down alongside leg.
9. Ripped or holey pants should not be worn if the rips and holes are in areas that are shorter than allowed for shorts or
skirts. These types of jeans, short skirts and shorts are not allowed even if leggings are on underneath.
10. No undergarments showing (briefs, boxers and bras)
11. No shirts or tops that cannot be tucked in. No bare midriffs.
12. No mesh or see-through tops or tops that scoop so low in front that cleavage or student’s undergarments show.
13. No bare stocking feet or slippers
14. No sleepwear or swimwear.
15. No transparent or sheer clothing.
16. No tank tops with large arm holes.
LOCKERS
Each student needs two lockers at school: a hall locker and a gym locker. The school will assign
lockers. Use only the locker you have been assigned. Only locks provided at school may be used. Do
not share your locker with anyone. Do not share your locker combination or locker with anyone.
This is to insure the safety of your belongings. Be sure your locker is closed and locked when not in use.
Lockers are school property loaned to you for your convenience. Do not put anything in your locker that
would not be appropriate for you to have at school. Lockers may be searched by the school administration if necessary
and inappropriate items confiscated. The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen from your locker or from
other locations on campus, though we will try to assist you in recovering them if possible. If you have problems with
your lock or locker, check with the person who issues lockers in the Attendance Office.
I look forward to meeting our new 7th graders on August 17, 2015 at the Orientation starting at 10 am.

Póliza de teléfonos celulares en SRMS
Los teléfonos celulares sólo se pueden utilizar antes y después de la escuela. Los estudiantes no pueden
cargar sus celulares durante el día escolar, incluso cuando el celular este apagado. Los teléfonos celulares
se deben mantener en los casilleros durante el día escolar. Violaciones resultará en la confiscación y / o
acción disciplinaria.
El Código del Vestuario
Un código de vestuario apropiado se ha establecido para promover un ambiente académico seguro y enfocado en el
estudio.
*No se puede llevar gorras, cachuchas o sombreros en las clases, la biblioteca o en cualquier otro edificio.
El vestuario general de los estudiantes aplica a todos los estudiantes y será estrictamente cumplido.
1. No se puede tener o llevar cualquier cosa que tenga palabras o imágenes de drogas o cosas asociadas con las

2. No se puede llevar ropa con comentarios racistas o violentas dirigidos a cualquier grupo o individuo.

bufandas, cadenas, joyas, trapos, cinturones que cuelgan, brochas de cinturón con letra cursiva, zapatos y
cordones que, en la opinión de la escuela, pueda ser relacionada con las pandillas.
4. No se puede llevar uniformes o chamarras de equipos a menos que sean aprobados por la escuela.
5. No se puede llevar anteojos de sol dentro de los edificios.
6. Si se puede llevar las gorras y los sombreros afuera de los edificios.
7. No usar pantalones que se caen del cinturón o son más de una talla más grande que la talla del estudiante.
8. No se puede llevar faldas o pantalones cortos más cortos que los dedos de la estudiante cuando ella estira el
brazo a lo largo de la pierna.
9. No deben usarse rasgaduras pantalones si las rasgaduras y agujeros en áreas que son más cortas de lo permitido

10. No deben ser visibles los braseares o los calzones.
11. No se puede llevar camisas o blusas que son tan cortas que no se pueden meter en el pantalón. No deben ser

12. Las estudiantes no pueden llevar camisas o camisetas que revelan lo que está debajo, ni camisetas, blusas, etc
que revelan los senos o ropa interior.
13. No se puede llevar sandalias "flip-flops", zapatillas, o medias sin zapatos. Las sandalias necesitan tener una tira
que va por detrás del tobillo.
14. No se puede llevar ropa de dormir ni de nadar.
15. No se permite ropa transparente o ropa escarpada.
16. No camisetas con grandes agujeros.
Los Casilleros
Cada estudiante necesita dos candados en la escuela; una para el pasillo y otro para la
educación física. La escuela designa el número del casillero. Solo casilleros previstos por la
escuela se pueden usar. No compartan el casillero con nadie. No compartan la combinación del candado con nadie.
Esto es para asegurar sus cosas. Asegúrense que el casillero esté cerrado y asegurado siempre. Si el casillero no esté
bien asegurado, pueda resultar en una detención. Los casilleros son propiedad de la escuela, prestados a los estudiantes.

Please call in your student’s absence the morning of their absence. By note or phone call, notify attendance office prior to
prolonged absences for medical reasons or non-medical reasons, such as vacations. To avoid excessive absences, please
provide SRMS attendance with a note from the attending medical practitioner or dentist. Absences
that are not excused from phone calls or notes are recorded as “cut” until cleared, so please be
diligent about reporting all absences.

Santa Rosa Middle School Prepares for Emergencies
Santa Rosa Middle School has a plan in place to deal with a variety of emergencies. We work with local emergency
agencies including Santa Rosa Police to evaluate and update our emergency plans. It is very important that each
student’s Emergency Card is kept up to date with so that we may know to whom we may release your child in case
of emergency. Our Student Release area is at the gate on 5 th street on the south side of the campus between rooms
67 and 68.
Please plan to pick up your student ONLY from the 5 th St. gate. In order for our staff to maintain records of who has
been picked up, we must not have any student taken from the campus except from that gate. We are trying to avoid a
chaotic exodus from the site.
In the event of a major emergency, there are things you can do to help us to be prepared. Talk with your child about
who is on the Emergency Card you have turned in to the office. Tell your child to wait for the Student Release
process to take place and follow the directions of the staff at school. You and your child will feel more secure
knowing students will be kept safely at school until a parent or designated person is able to pick them up.

excepto a partir de esa puerta. Estamos tratando de evitar un éxodo caótico en el sitio.
En el caso de una emergencia, hay cosas que usted puede hacer para ayudarnos a estar preparados. Hable con su
hijo/hija acerca de quién está en el tarjeta de emergencia que se han convertido en la oficina. Dígale a su hijo/hija
que se espere hasta que el proceso de Entrega de Estudiantes se haga y que siga las instrucciones del personal de

Expected behavior while under school authority

Cougar Counseling Corner
We hope your summer has been wonderful so far.
We, the counselors, Antonio Garcia (students with
last names A-L) and Dave McCamish (students with
last names M-Z) want to welcome you to Santa Rosa Middle
School. We are looking forward to another fabulous school
year.
We encourage you and your student to seek our services.
Students can drop into the counseling office before school, at
break, or after school as well as receiving permission from
their teachers, during class time, to come to our office.
Students can also leave notes for us or with the Counseling
Secretary/Registrar (Sheila Lichirie) in the counseling office.

work with students on all social, emotional, and academic
areas.
Just One Minute to Stay Organized
Parents, if you are wondering what type of
supplies to purchase for your student for the
upcoming school year, here are a few suggestions. Your
student may want to begin the year with three-ring binders
folders, a package of college ruled lined paper, black or blue
ink pens and a back pack. Teachers will assist students with
organization skills throughout the year and we suggest
parents also help to help smooth the transition into middle
school.
Tips for Parents on How to Academically
Support Their Student
Agendas: Every student at SRMS receives an
agenda at the beginning of the school year. The agenda
should be used every day to write down the daily
assignments in all classes. Parents can check this agenda
nightly to make sure the assignments are being written down
and can check the work their students have done. If you are
concerned that the assignments are not being written down,
you can ask your student to have each teacher initial the
agenda daily. This way the teacher can check for accuracy
and open a dialogue with the student.
Weekly Progress Reports: The counseling
office supplies students with daily and weekly
progress reports. These reports give the student and the
parent a picture of how the student is doing both
academically and behaviorally in class. We recommend NOT
waiting for a six-week grading report. Use these reports in a
pro-active manner to intervene before serious problems arise.
This item also opens a dialogue with the teacher.
Homework Hot Line: Teachers have set up their voice mail
systems to give students and parents a list of homework due
during the week. This is a great way to check the accuracy of
agendas as well as informing students of assignments when they
are out ill. The teacher telephone numbers are enclosed in this
Newsletter.
Homework: Students and parents can check their homework
assignments for each class using our school website. Simply go
onto our website: http://www.srms.srcs.k12.ca.us/facultycontacts-homework-info.html and look up the homework for the
night. This website is maintained by students in our very own
computer 2 class.
Teacher Voice Mail: Every teacher has voice mail. If you have
a question or concern about your student in a particular class,
please leave a message for the teacher and he/she will call you
back. Many teachers will also give you an email address to
utilize. Ask the teacher if this is an option.
Home Access Center (HAC): SRCS’s Home Access
Center (HAC) is now fully functional and operational.
You are now able to access on-line your student’s
academic record. As a parent you can check on your student’s
attendance, discipline, homework assignments and grades to date.
To access your student’s information, please go to
www.srcs.k12.ca.us and register or contact the Counseling Office
regarding the steps for acquiring your registration code.
Parent/Teacher/Counselor Meeting:
Students sometimes
struggle with the transition to middle school. Being an adolescent
is a hard job; the job which can be harder is that of being a parent
to an adolescent. Many parents feel lost and “out of the loop”
when their students become more independent. If you need help,
call the counselors and we will work with you and your student to
adjust and work through this awkward time.
Grading Period: Parents receive grade reports from teachers
every six weeks. These reports are mailed home. The quarter
ending dates are, approximately, the third week of September, the
third week of November, the first week of February and the third
week of April. Quarter grades are mailed from the District Office
approximately one week after the end of each quarter. In addition,
students who are in danger of failing any course, receive a mailed
Oral Grade report (also known as a Mid-Quarter Progress Report)
mid-way through each quarter.
Student Schedules
Students will be given their 2015-2016 Class
Schedules on Monday, August 17th. The 7th Graders will
receive their schedules during orientation from 10:00 – 12:00.
The 8th Graders will receive their schedules from 1:00 -- 3:00.
If your student is unable to attend orientation, schedules will also
be distributed on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 19 th,
at tables in the corridor by the main office. All school purchases
can also be made during the first week of school.
Students will NOT be allowed to make class changes during the
first week of school. The exceptions to this will be if a student has
an inaccurate schedule, i.e., either too many, too few or duplicate
classes. After the first week, counselors will see students about
elective changes. We never process schedule changes for any of
the following reasons: I don’t like the teacher; I do not have any
friends in the class; the class is boring. We encourage students to
give their classes some time and effort before looking for
alternatives.

estudiantes de 8vo grado también recibirán sus horarios el
martes de 1:00 - 3:00. Si el estudiante no puede asistir a la
orientación, los horarios también serán distribuidos en el primer
día de clases, miércoles, 20 de agosto, en las mesas en el pasillo
de la oficina principal. Todas las compras de la escuela también
pueden hacerse durante la primera semana de escuela.
Los estudiantes no se les permitirán hacer cambios de clase
durante la primera semana de clases. Los únicos cambios que se
van a procesar durante la primera semana están programando
"errores", es decir, las clases muy pocas, demasiadas clases, las
clases de duplicados, etc Después de la primera semana, los
consejeros verán a los estudiantes acerca de los cambios
electivos. Nunca procesarnos cambios de horarios para
cualquiera de las siguientes razones: No me gusta el maestro, no
tengo ningún amigo en la clase, la clase es aburrida.

esfuerzo antes de buscar otras alternativas.

SRMS Leadership students
Supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
The Leukemia Lymphoma Society has been helping patients with
blood cancer for decades. Every year LLS hosts a walk to support
and remember these patients. Santa Rosa Middle School has been
involved in supporting LLS for the past 5 years. Last year our
amazing SRMS students raised over $20,000.00 dollars for this
cause. This year’s “light the Night” walk is on Oct 10th, so please
mark your calendars and plan on walking with your family and

Leadership Activities to kick off the school year...
Picture Day will get off to an early start on Wednesday, September 2.
All students must take their photo that day for their yearbook picture
and Student I.D. Students must follow the dress code and will need
money on that day if they are purchasing. Flyers with prices will be
sent home in their P.E. classes.
The Annual Magazine/Cookie Dough Fundraiser begins Wednesday, Aug 26, with the 1st turn-in day on Wed, Sept. 2.
This is our big fundraiser of the year that supports all student activities, Dances, Rallies, Field Trips, Multicultural Night,
Cougar Card Turn-in, Student Store, Elections, and Student/Staff Appreciation just to name a few. Students who
participate not only get the satisfaction of helping support school events but are awarded with some really cool prizes
such as a "Hummer Limo" ride to In & Out or attending the "Game Truck" day.
Flyers with all the prizes and important dates will be given to all students at the kick-off Assembly on Wednesday,
August 26th.
We continue the busy pace in October with several exciting events; Light the Night - supporting the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10th. We will be asking for support through the home room classes
by raising money and assisting with decorations for this all important downtown event. Our first Dance is Friday, Nov
th
6 from 3:30-5:30. Students are required to turn in a dance permission slip in order to attend the dance; once a
permission slip is turned in it is good for all three dances for the year. You will find the dance permission slip in this
newsletter.
And finally we wrap up the month with "Spirit Week" - Oct. 26 – 30. Each day will be a dress-up day and an exciting
rally with music at lunch. Rallies will include fun games and great prizes - so show with your school spirit and participate
in the dress-up days. Themes for each day will be announced in September in order to give students plenty of time to
pick out their outfits!

Leucemia y Lipoma
La sociedad de leucemia Lymphoma ha estado ayudando
a los pacientes con cáncer de la sangre durante décadas.
Cada año LLS organiza una caminata para apoyar y
recordar a estos pacientes. Santa Rosa Middle School ha
estado involucrada en el apoyo a LLS durante los últimos
4 años. El año pasado nuestros estudiantes increíbles de
SRMS recaudaron más de $14,000 dólares para esta
causa. Este la caminata de "la noche de luz" es el 11 de

Actividades de liderazgo para poner en marcha el año
escolar ...
Día de la foto comienza temprano el miércoles, 2 de
septiembre. Todos los estudiantes deben tomar su foto de
ese día para su foto en el anuario y la identificación del
estudiante. Los estudiantes deben seguir el código de
vestimenta y necesitarán su dinero en ese día si piensan
comprar fotos. Volantes con precios serán enviados a casa en su clase de PE.
Recaudación de fondos con nuestra Revistas Anuales y masa para galletas comienza el miércoles, 26 de
agosto, y fecha para entregar la primera orden es el miércoles 2 de Septiembre. Esta es nuestra gran
recaudador de fondos del año que apoya todas las actividades estudiantiles, bailes, reuniones,
Excursiones, Noche Multicultural, tarjeta de Puma, la tienda estudiantil, Elecciones, y el día de apreciación
para los Estudiantes / Personal, sólo para nombrar unos pocos. Los estudiantes que participan no
solamente obtienen la satisfacción de ayudar a los eventos de apoyo escolar, pero son premiados con
unos premios muy interesantes, como un viaje en un "Hummer Limo" a In & Out, o participar en el día de
"Camión de juegos". Los volantes con todos los premios y las fechas importantes se les darán a todos los
estudiantes en la asamblea el miércoles 26 de agosto.
Seguimos adelante con el ritmo de trabajar en octubre con varios eventos interesantes; Luz de la Noche el apoyo a la Sociedad de Leucemia y Linfoma está programada para el Sábado, 10 de octubre. Vamos a
pedir apoyo a través de las clases de origen para recaudar dinero y ayuda con las decoraciones de este
evento importante en el centro. Nuestro primer baile es viernes, 6 de noviembre de 3:30-5:30. Los
estudiantes están obligados a entregar un permiso de baile para asistir al baile, una vez que entregan el
permiso es bueno para los tres bailes de todo el año. Va a encontrar la forma de permiso de baile en este
boletín.
Y, finalmente, terminamos el mes con "Semana del Espíritu" - 26-30 de octubre. Cada día será un día de
disfraces y un rally interesante, con música en el almuerzo. El Rally incluirá juegos de diversión y grandes
premios - para mostrar tu espíritu de la escuela, participa en los días de vestir. Los temas de cada día se
darán a conocer en septiembre con el fin de dar a los estudiantes suficiente tiempo para elegir su ropa!

Welcome to a new and healthy year at Santa Rosa Middle School! Here are a few things the Health Office would like
you to know: Any student requiring any medication (prescription or over the counter) MUST have a signed
“Physicians Recommendation for Medication” form on file in our office. If your child has any medical problem which
teachers/staff should be aware of, please notify the Health Office. Students trying out for a sports team (basketball,
track, volleyball, etc.) must have a Sports Physical dated after June 1, 2015 in order to participate. Most
importantly, we hope that you and your child have a healthy and happy year at SRMS!

SAFE SCHOOL AMBASSADORS 2015 - 2016
Every year SRMS students are trained by Community Matters to participate in our Safe School Ambassador program. Students
learn how to notice what is going on around them, think about what they can do to help, and then to take
action appropriately. Students focus on themselves and their friends and then branch out to help others.
Whether it is supporting someone who has been put down or distracting a bully from bothering someone,
Safe School Ambassadors model respect and kindness. These students and their teacher family group
leaders help provide a safe and supportive school environment.
Cada año los estudiantes de SRMS son entrenados por los asuntos comunitarios a participar en nuestro
programa de Escuela Segura Embajador. Los estudiantes aprenden a darse cuenta de lo que está pasando alrededor de ellos,

SRMS Textbooks…
Students are issued their textbooks through the library, and are responsible for returning them in good
condition to the library at the end of the school year. Please note that students are required to put their name
in ink on the inside cover and to keep track of their textbooks throughout the school year. Fines for lost or
damaged books will be posted on the students’ library accounts, and students will be placed on the L.O.P. (loss of privilege)
list until all fines are cleared. All unpaid fines will be sent to our districts billing dept. and report cards will be held until the
matter is resolved.

We welcome our new French Teacher Madame Devereaux!!!
7th Grade French class has begun learning
the beautiful French language. We are
getting to know our French teacher and
learning all about French culture from her.
She spent much of the summer in France
with other teachers, so she has a lot of
interesting stories to share. We are learning the tricks
to pronouncing French and of course we are learning basic
greetings.
8th Grade French class has been busy getting to know our new
French teacher. It has been so interesting to hear her stories
about spending her summer in France with other teachers.
She has taught us a lot about French culture from her
fascinating stories of travelling and staying in France. Of
course we have been reviewing what we learned last year to
make sure we have a good French foundation before learning
more advanced French.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS
Welcome Cougars and families to the Santa
Rosa Middle School Physical Education
Department. Each year is an exciting time, because
our 7th graders are now going to begin their life
long quest of daily fitness activity. Students will
dress out every day in PE. Every Monday, we do an
activity called HOPSPORTS, that provide students
with the foundation for a healthy and active
lifestyle, through a multi-media, technology driven,
standards compliant physical education curriculum.
Each week your son/daughter will spend one day in
the classroom with a health based curriculum called
Fitness For Life, and various activities throughout
the school year.
Following orientation optional items are available
for purchase including PE clothes and planners.
Once the school year starts, you may contact the
girls PE office at 528-5051, or the boys PE office
at 528-5052. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and
look forward to seeing everyone at SRMS.

Bienvenido Cougars y las familias al
Departamento de Educación Física de Santa Rosa
Escuela Media. Cada año es emocionante, porque

which can be purchased at any time, becoming valid the
first time it is used and remain valid for unlimited rides

before school, during Brunch/Lunch and afterschool.)

Science News
Congratulations to Jasmin Michaca and
Alyce Estrada for having been selected to
attend Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls at Stanford this
summer. Jasmin and Alyce are two of eight students
nominated by science and math teachers. They completed a
500 word essay and an interview process to be our SRMS
selected for 2014-2015. We are proud of you, Jasmin and
Alyce!
Cougars in the Wild completed their 10th annual community
service project on Angel Island in May. SRMS Cougars and
SRHS Panthers worked together clearing culverts along
the main road around the island. Cougars in the Wild is an
outdoor leadership club at Santa Rosa Middle School. The
club advisors are Neil Arneson, 8th grade physical science,
and Marilyn Wheatley, 7th grade life science.
The Science Department would like to thank all the Santa
Rosa Middle School families for their support and
participation this past school year. Your generous
donations of classroom materials and personal time have
significantly contributed to an amazingly successful year.
As a Department we work to contribute to the SRMS
climate and culture while always putting student learning
first. Hands on exploratory science in the classroom, the
8th grade Exploratorium Field Trip, the 7 th grade field trip
to Armstrong Woods, Campus Beautification Day, Cougars
in the Wild and our night of star gazing at the Ferguson
Observatory were all made possible with our SRMS faculty
and SRMS families’ support and participation. We are a
team! Go Cougars!
If your student is missing a jacket or other article of
clothing, you might want to check our Lost & Found area in
the Library. We also have lost articles such as eye glasses,
keys and jewelry in the main office.

History teachers are
excited and preparing for the upcoming
school year. We're meeting, coordinating
and organizing to ensure a positive start in
August. Each fall has its challenges, but it is always
special to see so many eager faces, greet the students
for the first time and begin the school year anew.
During the first days of class we will be conducting
interactive lessons that allow teachers and students to
get to know each other better, and help students learn
more about their classmates. During this time, students
are also taught about the expectations of the teachers
and routines of the classroom.
Seventh Grade World History (Medieval Period)
Seventh graders will begin the year learning
about geography terms and skills. Students
usually conclude this unit with a project such
as Geotopia, where they apply their newly
learned skills to create their own country. In
some classes, they will be putting together
parallel timelines that include their life events and
simultaneous events around the world. The medieval
societies that they will be studying this year existed at
about the same time and many key cultural events from
the different civilizations happened within a few years
of each other.
Eighth Grade United States History
Eighth graders will begin the year learning about the different
geographical regions of North America, and the influence that
these differences had on the lives of Native Americans, the
development of the colonies and later the regional discord of
our developing nation. Our focus after the geography unit will
be on the Native Americans and the early European settlers.
Some activities include Native American journals and
storytelling. Students will be working in partners to write and
present their stories to their classmates. Students will also be
creating colonial brochures. Part of the activity in the
brochures includes having students develop a commercial in
order to get classmates to come to their assigned colony.
Autumn is a busy, yet exciting time for students and teachers.
We are looking forward to another year of challenges and
rewards.

SRMS Dance Permission Slip
Dear Parents,
SRMS will be having 2 school dances throughout the year. Dances are from 3:30-5:30 PM, in the gym.
Music will be provided by a D.J.
In an effort to ensure a fun evening for all, please take a few minutes to go over the following rules with your
student.
1. No one but SRMS students are allowed at the dance.
2. No one is allowed to enter 30 minutes after the dance has started unless they have previous permission from Ms.
LaPrath or Mr. Fierro.
3. Student dress must comply with standard school dress guidelines.
4. No one leaves the dance before it is over unless their parent or legal guardian comes to the door to pick them up.
Please be prompt in picking your student up after the dance. Students not picked up within 30 minutes after the
dance will lose the privilege of attending the next dance.
5. If students are absent from school the day of the dance, or are on the L.O.P. (Loss of Privilege) list they may not
attend the dance.
6. This signed permission slip is required to purchase a ticket and will be on file for the year for each dance.
7. Cost per ticket is $5.00/4.00 with ID. Tickets will be on sale at lunch in the Leadership room, Monday through
Thursday the week of the dance.
TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD THE DAY OF THE DANCE OR AT THE DOOR.
8. Students who bring their student body I.D. card to purchase a ticket will receive a discount on the cost of the
ticket.
All dances are well supervised by parent volunteers and staff members. In the event your student demonstrates
inappropriate behavior, they may be removed from the dance. You will be called to pick them up, and they will
lose the privilege of attending any further dances. We appreciate your time in going over these rules with your
students.

From the PFSO: Parent Orientation to Middle School
Your student’s entrance into middle school is a big step in their educational and personal development. You are
probably wondering how your involvement at middle school should change as your student wants more
independence. We hope this article will help in understanding why and how you should continue your
involvement at school and encourage your child to become more involved at SRMS.
First, let us welcome you to Santa Rosa Middle School. With only two years at SRMS, it will go by fast, but you
will see tremendous growth in your student academically and socially. We have a very dedicated administration
and staff. You will be impressed by how much they give of their time and energy to make SRMS a special place
for all of our children.
In elementary school, you were familiar and involved with your PFO, PTO, or PTA. In middle school, we have a
PFSO (Parent Faculty Student Organization). The addition of the “S” is significant. Students take an active role
in their student government called ASB (Associated Student Body). All students are also welcome to attend the
monthly PFSO meetings to express their needs for SRMS. We need their insight and are always impressed by
their communication skills.
In today’s public school environment, parents often take the initiative to do fundraising to bring additional
money to the school to add enrichment programs, supplies, and other things which make the school experience
more complete for the students. Middle school also has needs in this area. However, the students through
student government (ASB and 7th & 8th Grade Class) also take the initiative to raise these funds. Of course,
parent support is still needed to make the fundraisers successful, but your student will take more initiative
because they know that the money will make their middle school experience better.
There are a number of programs and activities which have been deemed important at SRMS. Your involvement
at PFSO meetings will give you more information on these programs and let you vote on their financial support.
At orientation, you will be asked to make a donation to the PFSO to cover the cost of such items as student
agendas. We ask that you pay what you can afford and know that every student will receive an agenda, but
the rest of the cost is covered by SRMS fundraising efforts not from the school district.
The PFSO General Budget covers items such as PFSO insurance, postage for SRMS Newsletter, teacher
supplies, and staff appreciation. The PFSO also raises the funds to support the Renaissance Academic
Recognition program which consists of rallies, recognitions, and prize raffles to encourage and celebrate the
academic successes and perfect attendance of our students.
SRMS celebrates Multicultural Week with assemblies and activities for the students. This past year our
celebrations culminated in Multicultural Night at SRMS with fabulous food and entertainment. This
wonderful event was funded jointly by PFSO and ASB. Staff, parents, and students joined together to make this
week possible at SRMS.
SRMS also has a tradition of having a 7th grade class field trip and an 8th grade class field trip. The 7th
grade class has visited Armstrong Woods with a day of fun and educational activities (including a BBQ lunch)
and the 8th grade class has visited The Exploratorium in San Francisco. Parent chaperones are needed as well
as funds to cover buses and/or entrance fees.
Another important program at SRMS is the Safe School Ambassadors program. Teachers and students are
trained to create and foster an environment of respect and caring to all at SRMS. We have been doing this
program for a few years and the results are measured and appreciated by all.
Middle school also increases the amount of Student Activities. From sports to school dances to school spirit
rallies to end-of-year events, these are what make middle school exciting and fun for our students. Students
and student government take the lead in organizing and funding these activities. The Magazine Sale is the first
fundraiser of the year. It is student organized, but we do need some parent help in tallying up the sales and
payments. Please give it your full support and encourage your student, too.
We hope that this article clearly explains why your involvement is needed. Come to the PFSO meetings to see
what is going on and how you can help. There are many “behind-the-scene-jobs”, but middle school students
still need parent chaperones for dances, field trips, and end-of-year events.

PFSO Budget for 2015-2016 School Year
This is the budget for the PFSO as approved at the May 2015 meeting. These funds are what we manage and
do not include the funds raised by the All Student Body (ASB) or by the 7th grade class or the 8th grade class.
We have money in our account to start off the school year. This is our starting budget and we vote to any
changes and spending during the year as our income comes in.
Our major fundraiser comes directly from you. It is the Cougar Pride Donation Drive (see
form). There are many programs and activities which benefit our students and are not
funded by the school district. Your gift is 100% tax-deductible. Make the donation payable to
SRMS PFSO. 

La entrada de su estudiante en la escuela secundaria es un gran paso en su desarrollo educativo y
personal. Usted probablemente se pregunta cómo su participación en la escuela secundaria cambiara
cuando su estudiante quiere más independencia. Esperamos que este artículo le ayude a entender cómo y

En primer lugar, le damos la bienvenida a Santa Rosa Middle School. Con sólo dos años en SRMS,
pasará muy rápido, pero va a ver un gran crecimiento en su estudiante académicamente y socialmente.
Tenemos una administración y personal muy dedicada. Usted quedará impresionado por cuanto dan de su
tiempo y energía para hacer SRMS un lugar especial para todos nuestros niños.
En la escuela primaria usted estaba familiarizado e involucrado en PFO, PTO, PTA . En la
secundaria, tenemos un PFSO (organización de padres y estudiante de Facultad). Los estudiantes toman
un papel activo en su gobierno estudiantil llamado ASB (cuerpo estudiantil asociado). Todos los
estudiantes son invitados a asistir a las reuniones mensuales del PFSO para expresar sus necesidades de
SRMS. Necesitamos su discernimiento y siempre están impresionados por sus habilidades de
comunicación.
En el ambiente de la escuela pública de hoy, los padres suelen toman la iniciativa para hacer la
recaudación de fondos para traer más dinero a la escuela para agregar programas de enriquecimiento y
otras cosas que hacen que la escuela de la experiencia más completa para los estudiantes. La escuela
secundaria también tiene necesidades en esta área. Sin embargo, los estudiantes a través del gobierno
estudiantil (ASB y 7 º y 8 º grado) también toman la iniciativa para recaudar estos fondos. Por supuesto,
el apoyo de los padres sigue siendo necesario para hacer la recaudación de fondos exitosas.
El PFSO también levanta fondos para apoyar el programa de reconocimiento académico del
renacimiento que consiste en manifestaciones, reconocimientos y rifas de premios para animar y celebrar
los éxitos académicos y asistencia perfecta de nuestros estudiantes. Es un programa maravilloso!
SRMS celebra una semana Multicultural con asambleas y actividades para los estudiantes. El año
pasado nuestras celebraciones culminaron en la noche Multicultural en SRMS con comida y
entretenimiento. Este maravilloso evento fue financiado conjuntamente por el PFSO y ASB. Personal,
padres y estudiantes se unieron para hacer posible que esta semana en SRMS.
Otro programa importante en SRMS es el programa de embajadores de escuela segura. Maestros y
estudiantes están capacitados para crear y fomentar un ambiente de respeto y cuidado a todos en SRMS.
Hemos estado haciendo este programa por años y los resultados son medidos y apreciados por todos.
La escuela secundaria también aumenta la cantidad de actividades estudiantiles. De deportes a los
bailes de escuela a mítines de escuela para eventos de fin de año, estas son las que hacen la escuela
secundaria emocionante y divertida para nuestros alumnos. Los Estudiantes y el gobierno estudiantil
asumir el liderazgo en la organización y financiamiento de estas actividades. La venta de las revistas es el
primer evento del año. Es organizado por los estudiantes, pero necesitamos la ayuda de los padres para
contar y recibir los pagos. Por favor, de todo su apoyo y anime a su estudiante, también.
Una escuela Mejor significa más espíritu de Puma. Está bien documentado que los padres que dan
más apoyo a la escuela, mejor la escuela. Y una mejor escuela significa más espíritu del Puma, que se
traduce en mejores calificaciones y los estudiantes más felices. Y eso es lo que todos aspiramos para.

The Cougar Pride Donation Drive is a direct and easy way to support our school. There are
many programs and activities which benefit our students and are not funded by the school
district.
