Mi profundo agradecimiento a los miembros de The real thing, As busy as a bee, Sweet tooth y Beer bellies. *GLI ALUNNI DI QUESTO ARTICOLO FREQUENTANO QUEST’ANNO IL CORSO 2º AVANZATO. inglés Evaluating, assessing, judging, measuring… wouldn’t it be nice if we could… by Michael McGrath In my frequent flirtations with literary creation I would never have expected, for a moment, to find myself making reference to the Harry Potter saga. I don’t know if reading all seven books would count as an amazing feat because I am sure that there are millions of late teenagers out there who have read them at least 15 times, forwards and backwards. I had the pleasure of reading the first couple of stories to my son and then, thank goodness, we started taking turns. If he enjoyed them, well, that’s fine by me, but those interminable adventures of Harry, Hermione and Ron weren’t exactly my cup of tea, they didn’t really float my boat. But these last few days, my favourite character’s (Severus Snape) face has been continually coming to mind. Yes. I have been thinking of sourpuss Snape and also of the numerous spells that coloured the stories. (I know. The Harry Potter nerds will pedantically inform me that Snape was the teacher in charge of Potions and, later, Dark Arts, not spells). But when I think of Severus Snape I think of spells. What I found hilarious about the film versions of the Potter stories was Daniel Radcliff’s (the “actor” who played Harry) look of total unamazement every time he performed a piece of really prodigious magic. Of course, a couple of spells would come in handy for us teachers at the EOIP. If only we could do magic with the same serious poker face as Harry. All we’d have to do is get a wand from somewhere (the Chinese shop on the corner, for example) and repeat some magical, Latin-sounding words three times and our wishes would be granted. Let me explain… After the written expression exam we teachers would collect up all the candidates’ offerings and we’d go to the school’s darkroom and we’d carefully put each exam in the superamendatis solution, an innocent-looking, transparent liquid, and wait ten seconds. Then we would chant “lexicohesco heradequasintatis scribens” three times. Suddenly, the superamendatis solution would turn orange, meaning the texts were a Pass or lilac meaning they were a Fail. In the latter case, on withdrawing the texts from the superamendatis solution each error or inappropriate element would be underlined or circled in fluorescent pink. Following this intricate and elaborate (but not frustrating) process, we’d conjure up the scriptcomplicatium spell in order to join each exam with its original owner. Good, eh? As our dear readers probably know, it is very important to maintain anonymity during the examination period. So, just imagine our candidates coming into the classroom for the oral exam dressed like penitents from an Easter procession, so popular in this country, or like Ku Klux Klan members, so popular in another country. Anyway, we examiners at the EOIP can already count on the most modern technology but the latest iPad, tablet or smart phone would be nothing compared to the f o l l o w i n g g a d get: the uncanny, 13 inglés 14 spellbinding digital recorder that works wonders. Wouldn’t it be nice if when recording our candidates’ interventions, we examiners could just sit back and put our feet up and smile encouragingly from time to time and at the end of the test we could gutturally whisper the prattleparlans spell into the tiny microphone at the side of the recorder. “Phoney isochroney” /fəuni isəukrəuni/, three times. We’d empty the recordings into the corresponding folder in our laptop in the English department but if we’d listened to the recordings again not only would we hear the candidate’s voice but in the background we’d also hear a Severus Snape-like voice assessing the student’s discourse making comments on phonetics, phonology, tone units, elision, assimilation, contrastive stress, discourse intonation and so on, finishing with an explicit, clear-cut, concrete, definitive decision on the individual’s performance: “This sample is undoubtedly a Pass” or “This sample is unequivocally a Fail.” Wouldn’t it be nice if we were…if we could…well, dreaming, for the moment, is free. But, unfortunately REALITY is another thing. And, to make matters worse, everyone has their own version, if you know what I mean. So, Good Luck to everyone for this May and June. U Motivation in the language classroom by Sonia Morillas Caridad Every year teachers, more often than not, find themselves looking for diverse ways to motivate their students. This is something I have immersed myself in since my very beginnings. As for myself, I believe that motivation is the key not to success but to achievement –personally or academically-. tant activity and alertness and this implies, at the same time, working for short spans of time on each activity. The opposite -working for more than 15 minutes on the same stuff- will get them distracted and make them drift away to their own worlds of fantasy. I have been observing during these past years that the way I teach and approach my lessons can make a big difference and provoke an impact on my students’ attitude. In other words, I can see that the way lessons are oriented can determine enthusiasm or a lackluster attitude. In fact, it is noteworthy how students themselves ask for exercises that fall way far from “the classics”: filling out blank spaces, ordering scrambled sentences, deciding which is the appropriate answer for a given question and so on, and prefer watching videos or listening to audios taken from the news instead, simply because that is the way the language is actually used. What I firstly do to boost my students’ motivation is to instill in them the conviction that the work we do in class is indeed significant, and here is where authenticmaterial tasks play a prevailing role. They need to feel that what they are learning will bring about long-lasting benefits and is not just something that will ultimately be cast into oblivion. For this reason, it’s quite easy to see me carrying a hodgepodge of exercises-each different from the rest- in my bag, since motivation is fueled by cons- I am not the kind of teacher who spoon-feeds students with readymade activities or uses time-fillers to kill time, so I make sure they explore the language by themselves, thus helping them to become more critical explorers/ thinkers. Obviously, if we do not drum some grammar and vocabulary into their heads they will never be effective speakers of the language in point, but it is precisely real and authentic language that we want them to internalize, not what they see in the average textbook. Movies with a mission by Gregorio J. Martínez San Millán -“I… Am… Your… Father…” Yes, we all have heard that and many other famous quotes from so many films. And this fact leads you to think that a lot of people are actually interested in cinema, which in turn might make a teacher contemplate the possibility of utilising it as a tool in the classroom. It’s been a long time now that, indeed, videotapes of the most diverse content have been used as a reinforcement for any given subject in both primary and secondary school and also at university, and not only where languages are concerned, or even where education is concerned, for that matter: if you didn’t feel like teaching at all…Hey, Welcome to the movies!! The greatest thing about the accession of the DVD player to the average household (and here we’re talking languages) is that a whole generation of unaccustomed film viewers finally got to watch their favourite hollywood features as they were originally recorded, and not with those fancy-voiced dubbings that misled so many naïve damsels into believing that their dream actors not only were gorgeous (go watch the extras for a closer look), but they could also lull them to sleep just by talking to them. If you had any knowledge about the native language of the film –or had seen the dubbed version- you could easily spot translation mistakes and linguistic misinterpretations of every kind, let alone when it came to subtitles and their wildly free reduction patterns. Now, all of this translated into the classroom provides those language teachers willing to spend a little time thinking of ways to exploit an excerpt from a movie with an unparalleled educating device. On its most basic level, it is eye-catching and entertaining, not to mention the fact that you have a whole array of different genres to pick from, and that, with many students, is in itself a win-win situation. It can be applied to almost any language you can think of, so teaching Japanese is no excuse to avoid this technique. In most instances, it portrays real life situations of the foreign culture in case, with real natives using real language the way they really do in their everyday lives. You have an immediate visual and/or acoustic translation a button-push away, which allows for a far from negligible number of differentiated activities (just wring your imagination). It’s inexpensive, as you (or the school) don’t even need to buy the DVD: you can take it from a public library. And last but not least, it’s intercurricular: movies based on literary works, on the (more or less) actual lives of authentic personalities, on famous historical facts, events and scenarios, on the advent of scientific breakthroughs of all sorts…all of which may be the kickstart of heated debates or the onset of new activities. Zer aurkitu zenuten ailegatu zinetenean? Arantza uste baino handiagoa da. Kalean jende asko zebilen eta taberna batzuk zeuden. Aterpetxea atsegina zen, 4 logelatan egon ginen 8 lagun bakoitzean. Zer egin zenuten? Hainbat jarduera egin genituen gure euskara praktikatzeko eta hobetzeko, eta beste lagunak ezagutzeko. Horretarako jolasak, bertsoak, kantak eta taldeka idatzizko jarduerak egin genituen. Gainera larunbat gauean kontzertu bat izan genuen eta mozorrotuta joan ginen. Bi bertsolari etorri ziren guri kantatzera. Kontzertua bukatu eta gero parranda egin genuen herriko jendearekin. Zein izan zen gehien gustatu zitzaizuen jarduera? Gehien gustatu zitzaigun jarduera kontzertua izan zen oso dibertigarria izan zelako. Bertsolariek gure mozorroei buruz kantatu zuten. Eta gehien kostatu zitzaizuena? Gehien kostatu zitzaigun jarduera bertsoak inprobisatzea izan zen. Zertarako balio izan du? Euskaraz elkarrekin bizi ahal garela konturatzeko. Uste baino gehiago dakigu. Zer nabarmenduko zenuke? Denbora hegan pasatu zen. Uste dugu esperientzia ona izan zela. Errepikatuko zenuke? Bai, horixe! Irakaslea konbentzitzea pentsatzen ari gara kurtso bukaeran beste barnetegi bat antolatzeko. If you ask me there is no point in learning another language if you don’t bother to enjoy yourself in it. E mi sono sentita tristissima perché sono dovuta partire… bolsas de viaje Edinburgh Thanks to the school I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Scotland. I chose Edinburgh to take the course as the idea had appealed to me for a long time. I preferred to go in August, as the weather is supposed to be better -which was not the case-, so as to make the most of my time. Besides, during the summer, this city is especially attractive as the Edinburgh International Festival takes place. This event is made of different festivals, such as the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe Festival. In this last one you can find from big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers. Hundreds of performers take any stage to present their shows. You can see them anywhere: bars, venues, or even in the streets. You are constantly offered the brochure in which you can find all the shows and decide which one you like most. You can choose among theatre, comedy, dance, circus, etc. As you can see you are unlikely to get bored as you will find something suitable for you for sure. As a result, the city is quite crowded over these weeks -the population doubles- and some streets become very colorful. Edinburgh is a special city. It is full of charm, with its stones closes, beautiful buildings and gardens, and interesting free entrance museums. The historical centre is divided by Princess Gardens into two big areas; these are the Old Town and the New Town. At the beginning of the Old Town the famous castle is located. That is the point where The Royal Mile, the main street, starts and where St Giles Cathedral is. A Text: Marta Burusco few metres from there we can find Greyfriars Bobby. It is a sculpture in honor of Bobby, a dog that stayed for fourteen years near its owner’s grave after he died. As a result, it won the affection of the people, and it is buried at Greyfriars Cemetery. If you are looking for worth seeing views I would recommend you to climb either Albert Seat or Calton Hill. If music is what you like the most, the city is full of pubs with live music. In some of them some musicians improvise their pieces of music. Regarding college, I took the course at Wallace College. It is a modest college perfectly located in the Old Town, with enthusiastic and efficient teachers who taught in a way that we could enjoy. I met students from different European countries. We used to meet after our lessons to do some plans together, and at the same time, continue improving the language. One day, for example, we visited Cramond Island, near Edinburgh, which is really interesting as it is a tidal island, that is, it is joined to the main land at low tide. I keep a nice memory from another day when we were taught traditional dances called “ceilidh” and it was great fun. Once I finished the course I went on a mini tour around the Highlands. The landscape was wonderful! I visited spectacular places. For instance, Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Elian Donean Castle and Glen CLoe. I am sure that many of you have seen some Highland’s sceneries in movies like Harry Potter or Highlander. I enjoyed the destination very much and if you are thinking about your next English-spoken experience or holidays... why not Scotland? 33 nos visitan The first Belgian students in Pamplona! Text: Sarah Janssens and Timon De Ryck 34 Hi everyone! We’re Sarah Janssens and Timon De Ryck. We’re both 22 years old, normally we live in Belgium, more specific Westerlo, it’s a little city in Antwerp. But now we are in Pamplona for three months! We’re students marketing, our Belgian school is called HIK CVO, it’s a school for adult education. This is the second year that we’re following this study. The reason for us for being in Pamplona is that we’re doing our internship here, from February until May. The purpose of this exchange is to get familiar with the real business world and to convert/ use our theory in to real projects. And by doing this internship we can further develop our skills. But off course this is not the only reason for us to come here… We also wanted to know the culture here, for us it’s a very unique opportunity and our Belgian coordinator recommended this place. We have a lot of different tasks here, but they are all very interesting. We learn a lot by doing this. So we have a lot of added value since we’re here. For example: doing efficient research, making reports, meetings with important partners, learning new methods, to communicate with partners, to think in different ways, making surveys and analyse them and the most important: to get feedback from a professional! We’re involved in every step in our projects, also the steps students normally can’t see. Our opinion is always important, they trust us, we can have contact with partners, they want us to feel good here. This gives such a good feeling. We get a lot of opportunities here, we get 11 hours a week French course, a meeting with an expert of lean start-up, a meeting with a minister of Navarra, visits to marketing companies, … But the most important things about this internship are that everybody in this school is so friendly, everyone we have met is so good for us. They are interested, they always want to help, they always say hello,… We couldn’t have a better company to do our internship. We love working together with our boss and all the other people in the school. They do not only care about our working progress, but also about how we feel, what we’re going to do in the weekends, … Being here gives us a warmly and safe feeling. Everybody is making us feel comfortable here. It’s our pleasure to be here. Doing an internship exchange is a big chance for everyone who’s involved! It’s a new experience for the company, but also for the students. We recommend everybody to try this out! Because it’s impossible for us to imagine a better place for doing our internship than here in Pamplona in the EOIP. And we hope that all the students who want the same lovely experience get the chance to do this! You won’t regret it!!! nos visitan Flemish part Aangezien wij uit België (Vlaanderen) komen, is onze moedertaal Nederlands. The past is the future Last September, I had the opportunity to attend an English course abroad during two weeks thanks to the scholarship the EOIP gave me in April with my project about Totnes called ¨New Age¨. The town I chose Totnes because one of my best friends recommended it to me, because it´s a small, peaceful, lovely and incredible town where I could see mainly ceramics. I studied pottery in the School of Arts in Logroño for three years and I was interested in making a trip where I could speak English, meet people, see art and draw in a quiet village. Besides, the weather was amazing. I brought a coat, an umbrella and a pair of wellies and I didn´t use them. Although the trip was in the last fortnight of September, it was sunny and bright every day. Totnes is a small market town in the South of Devon. It´s forty minute drive a forty-minute drive away from other coastal towns. The shops in Totnes are friendly and individual, and they are well known throughout the South of Devon for the charm of its independently owned shops and you can buy everything you can imagine. You can find antiques, second-hand clothes and antique books, all in the same shop. Many of these shops are owned independently and I could use the Totnes Pound, which is an alternative local currency, intended to support the local economy. You can see many tourists while you hear a man who looks like John Lennon with a long beard sing or you see a woman who dresses like Janis Joplin. It´s the most hippy place I´ve ever visited. There are people who call the place Totnes Narnia. I won´t forget Totnes!! Accommodation I was accommodated with a host family. Homestay is a very popular choice of accommodation in Totnes because it is a small town and its families live within walking distance of the school, so I didn´t need buses or trains to go to school. It took me ten minutes to get to school from home. I didn´t have to worry about cooking my meals because my host mum made breakfast and dinner for me, and I could practise English with them. They were a single mum, an eleven year-old girl and a fifteen year-old boy. They also had a dog and a cat. I was very happy with my choice. Transport I’d never travelled alone and the first day I was in panic. I got a bus from Pamplona to Barcelona, and there I got a plane to Bristol. After I had lunch and a globetrotters 37 little walk in Bristol, I got a train to Totnes, which took one hour and a half. When I came back to Spain I did the same journey, although the plane landed in Madrid instead of Barcelona. In Totnes there were a lot of bus connections which let me go to many places, or I could also take the train because there were many possibilities and different timetables. for the General course and the Intensive course, and each week the teacher changed. However, all of them were helpful. The first week, we were six people in class, four of them were German, one was French and the other one was me. And on the second week, we were six people too, but three of us were French, one was German, there also was a Kuwaiti and me. School On the first day, all of the new students did a writing test and a personal interview with one of the teachers to see which was our level and to help the staff place us in the right classes. Then they introduced us to important members of the school. After that, we went for a walk around the town and we learnt quickly about the local history and the most important landmarks. We also visited some other important places like the best place for a sandwich, the students’ favourite pub or the nearest post box. I chose Language in Totnes because the prices of the courses that they give are affordable. I had classes for five hours every morning from Monday to Friday. From 8:30 to 12:00 I attended general English classes and from 12:30 to 14:00 I had the Intensive course. All of the teachers and staff of the school were young and chummy and I got personal attention from them. It´s a very friendly place to be. In addition, the school is located in the town center, in the emblematic Gate House building and it offers a view of the high street. One teacher told us that the building burnt in 1990 and it was accurately reconstructed, and nowadays, the school is a mix between modernity and tradition. Each day, the class was in a different room, so we had to check our timetable. We had different teachers The first day Leisure time This trip made me know myself and I could draw and think about my ceramics as well as get ideas to do pieces. When I went to a village alone I carried my sketchbook and my watercolours, and when I was with my friends I tried to enjoy our good time together. The school prepared different activities for our spare time from Monday to Saturday. globetrotters On the second day in the school I signed up for the Dartmouth boat trip. We sailed from Totnes to Dartmouth on a tourist boat across the Dart river. The journey took fifteen minutes and it was great, it was peaceful and the views were incredible. Then we visited the gorgeous coast village and took a beer. Another day I was in the Coffee Club of the school after lunch time, where other students and me could take a cup of coffee or tea with milk and have some cupcakes and muffins while we were speaking English together. During the weekend, I went to Torquay by myself on Saturday. It is a coast, commercial town which is bigger than Totnes. There, I could walk through the boardwalk and the city center. I went shopping and in the afternoon I drew peacefully. 38 On Sunday I visited Salcombe with my friends. It´s a lovely coast village. My host mum told me that many rich people from London have a house there to spend their summer holidays. I thought it was a quite expensive place. We visited the town and then we rented a small boat to cross the shore to go to the beach where we took some photos, had lunch and slept on the sand. The weather was great and we would have taken a bath if we had worn our swimsuits. In my second week, on Monday, I went to the Dartington Hall Gardens alone by bus. It took only ten minutes from Totnes to get there. The gardens were huge and quiet. There weren´t many people and the gardens were open to the public but you could pay a voluntary donation of 3 pounds to help the maintaining costs. There was a medieval house with a twentieth century garden in a huge acre which was designed in the thirties by Beatrix Farrand, the famous American garden designer. It was marvellous and again, I could draw quietly. When I was not visiting other towns, I stayed in Totnes and visited other places alone to draw calmly. One day I visited the Totnes´ Castle, another day the outside of St Mary Church and the Brutus bridge near Dart river. Or I simply stayed at home to watch TV in English with my host family. I remember one day I went to buy food to the supermarket with my host mum and we bought the ingredients to cook a paella and, at home, I taught her how it’s made. My friends and me used to meet at a pub some days after dinner. The most frequent pub was ¨The Bull Inn¨ and there also was ¨The Bay Horse Inn¨, where sometimes there were people who played live music and there, we could sit in the garden and drink some beers. Another day I went to Darthmouth alone to spend the afternoon drawing in the seafront while I took a beer. The views were amazing. The last Saturday I went to Plymouth on my own by bus. It was as big as I’d thought. It´s a coastal city. There were many people and a huge shopping mall in the city center and I didn´t like it at all, but then, I found the port and the coastal area. There were a lot of people because it was the seafood festival. The old town was beautiful and the seafront was very long and walking along it was exhausting but the views were incredible. I visited the City Museum&Art Gallery, where the entrance was free. I could see many things about the history of pottery in Devon. I didn´t know that there were such a lot of ceramics in Devon and it was interesting. And near the museum, there is a huge School of Arts where all the first floor is about pottery only, with a lot of tools and maybe six or seven different Kilns! I was impressed. On my last day in Totnes, I bought as much tea as I could, and I said goodbye to everybody. I really have very good memories of Totnes and all my trip. It was the most amazing experience I´ve ever had. I came back to Pamplona and it seemed like I had lived in another age and now I have another point of view about life.
