The Future of McFarland is Bright!

Hello residents of McFarland, We are continuing to complete many new
projects around town and yet there is still more to come. I am excited to
announce that we are making more room for business down town on Kern
Ave., on East Sherwood and on the southwest corner of Elmo Hwy. I was
glad to see that Autozone opened its doors in town to offer their services for
all our automotive needs. We recently also cut the ribbon for our new bank
in town. United Security Bank has now opened its full service and drive up
ATM machine. The ATM is located on the intersection of Frontage/1st Street
and Perkins Ave. Please call them, they offer free checking and all ATM
transactions are free with an account. $25.00 is all that’s needed to open up a
savings account.
We will continue to see more construction work adding new sidewalks and
repaving more roads through various grants we have been awarded. One new
project will consist of adding sidewalks lamps and benches on Second Street.
We are getting closer to completing the new park on East Sherwood which will
have a new soccer field a baseball field with a skate park and an amphitheatre.
The soccer field will have professional grade grass that will withstand heat and
abuse much better than most soccer fields in the county. We will soon see the
building of a new park in the Villa de Caribe housing development which is in
the planning stage this month.
Your City Council members, the McFarland Tri Agency Partnership and
I are discussing and planning how we can provide more soccer fields in the
future, especially with the on-going success of our high school soccer teams
and the many youth soccer program that are crowding our parks. This is a
good problem to have for it directs our attention towards what our children and
community needs when building parks, or possibly the need to build a future
soccer complex!
I also want to take the time to congratulate our Festival Committee
members for all the wonderful parades and holiday events they manage and
coordinate in our community. Our Christmas Parade, Cinco de Mayo and 4th
of July celebrations are more exciting and better attended each year. We just
experienced an enjoyable Cops and Candy event which was a collaboration
between our police department and the festival committee. The Christmas
Parade this year was an evening parade with lighted floats and other holiday
decorated vehicles for our night time enjoyment.
So please keep our city, its staff and our many community volunteers in
prayer when you pray, along with our School District, our Recreation and Park
District and the festival committee. Together we are committed to growing and
serving to bless all of you, our residents.

citizens get involved and attend the city workshops.
Finally, I would like to thank the Police Department, City Staff, Citizens
Activity Committee, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and all the citizens
that make all the activities such as the Cops with Candy, the annual Christmas
Parade and the annual giving of Christmas packages to the needed families in
McFarland, possible. McFarland is truly a blessed City.

Focus On the Board: Amador Ayon
Amador Ayon was elected by his peers on the McFarland Recreation and
Park District to be the chairman for 2016. Mr. Ayon was gracious enough to
answer some questions so you can get to know him better.
1. Are you a native of McFarland? Talk about what comes to mind
growing up in the town, including family life.
I came to McFarland when I was 13 years in 1983. I grew up at 161 Browning
Road to parents Juana and Senen Ayon. I come from a family that had 13
brothers and sisters. In the 1980s, we had some struggles growing up but
we always had our family to fall back on. We were shown to work hard for
everything we had, so our summers and winter breaks consisted of us working
in the fields (for me starting age the age of nine). Those days helped to build a
character in us that we still have today.
2. Who are the people who have had the greatest influence in your life?
Some people that have had the greatest influence were of course my parents,
Mr. Jim White, my college coaches, Thomas Valles, David Diaz and my wife
Trini Arguello-Ayon.
3. You are a part of the McFarland Cross Country dynasty. Tell us what it was and is like to be part of something so successful. Also explain the hard work it took to be a top level athlete. I began to run cross country in 1984 as a sophomore at McFarland High
School (I went to Delano High my freshman year). At first, it was really
hard trying to compete with all the talented runners. I was lucky enough to
get a chance in a varsity time trial because Thomas Valles was hurt. That
opportunity opened the door for me on the varsity team as a sophomore, which
I never gave up again. Back in the mid 80s, we were pretty good winning a lot
but not racing fast like the kids do today. We ran 55-70 miles a week during
my senior year; looking back we really worked and put in a lot time to be
successful. We won league titles every year I ran and we won the South Area
title in 1986. We came in 2nd my two other years. Even then our fame was just
starting as a very good high school team, but we didn’t have the chance to win
a state title since it wasn’t contested until after I graduated. The hard work
really made or molded me into the person that I am today and I still wake really
early to run or to get my day going. The work ethic of the early years I still live
by today.
4. When did you graduate from McFarland High and CSUB? Did you go anywhere in between?
I graduated from MHS in 1987 and then attended College of Sequoias
from 1987 to 1990. I had the opportunity to go to Cal Poly SLO in 1991,
but transferred to California State University at Bakersfield and earned
my BA degree in Social Studies in 1992. I had the chance to compete at all
three schools. I also got a minor in Spanish and Math and have my teaching
credential from CSUB.
5. What organizations are you part of and what awards have you received?
I have served as board member for the McFarland Recreation and Park
District for four years, I am on the board of the McFarland Tri Agency
Partnership, a member of the McFarland Festival Committee, and am in the
process of joining the Lions Club. I have been blessed to receive numerous
awards, but I hold the ones I earned as a teacher and coach the dearest: I was
Teacher of the Year for 7th grade 2004 and 2005, Bakersfield Californian All
Area Coach of the Year 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 for Boys Cross Country and
2006 for Boys Track and Field, 2013 and 2015 for Girls Cross Country. I was
given the Chamber of Commerce President’s Award in 2009.

So, what is 2016 going to bring?
Programs: We will have the same great programs, but also plan to add
other offerings. Some of the possibilities are dance, music, after-school arts
and crafts, senior games and activities, and maybe a wrestling program. The
latter depends on the energy (though not completely) of one old wrestler who
shall remain nameless.
Planned Projects:
1.The Mouser Community Gymnasium restrooms will be remodeled
2.Major tree pruning at Mouser and Browning Road
3.The purchase of two new utility vehicles and a car with grant funds
4.Additional lighting added to parks
5.Addition of restrooms to Ritchey Park
6.Renovation of Mouser Center Reception Hall, kitchen and Fun Skills classroom
7.Installation of new scoreboard
for Mouser Field
Of course, some of these may
change as emergencies occur. One
thing I want to see happen is the
renovation of the interior pool
facilities (lockers, restrooms, etc.).
However, the extent of renovations
will depend, in part, on our ability
to secure grant funds. But, it is
our goal to continue to make your
parks and facilities better.
One last thank you goes to
Brenda Bradford and Johnny
Samaniego for serving as the chair
and vice-chair of the board of directors. You did a fantastic job! You care so
much for the community. It really shows. This year, Amador Ayon and Eliseo
Santillano have been voted chair and vice chair respectively.

6. Tell us about your current family life.
I am married to Trini Arguello-Ayon and we have three beautiful children
Alexa 16, Jordan 13, and Mikayla 10. Overall I could not ask for a better life. I
still keep in contact with my siblings and my dad. My mother passed on June 2,
2014, but there doesn’t go a day I don’t think of her.
7. Why do you give so much of your time to the community of McFarland?
I have taught and coached for over 25 years. I give so much to the community
because I love to help others. The Lord gives you the ability to serve him by
serving others so by all means use his grace. I like to serve our youth because I
firmly believe you to teach and bestow good values in them, not only by teaching
but just by spending time with them. My love of athletics is unconditional, since
sports did so much for me.
8. Why is MRPD so important? And, why did you decide to make the commitment to run for and become a board member?
At first, I was reserved in running for the MRPD Board. But after spending
some time with the other members we have learned to trust one another and
to make a difference. I firmly believe that as a community member you should
try to give up some of your free time to help not only our youth, but our other
citizens. Once we do that and throw out any agendas and look at the big picture,
that is the City of McFarland and its citizens, we make this small beautiful city a
better place to live in.

Estoy casado a Trini Arguello-Ayon y tenemos tres hermosos hijos Alexa
16, Jordan 13, y Mikayla 10. En general no podría pedir para una vida mejor.
Todavía mantengo contacto con mis hermanos y mi papa. Mi madre paso en 02
de junio de 2014, pero no pasa un día de que no pienso en ella.
7. ¿Porque le das gran parte de tu tiempo a la comunidad de McFarland?
He ensenado y entrenado durante más de 25 anos. Doy tanto a la comunidad

servir a nuestros jóvenes porque creo firmemente que ensenar y otorgar buenos

amor del atletismo es incondicional, ya que deportes hicieron muncho bien a mí.
8. ¿Por qué es tan importante el MRPD? ¿Por qué decidiste hacer el compromiso de ejecutar para convertirte en un miembro de la Junta?
Al principio, estaba reservado en el funcionamiento de la Junta de MRPD.
Pero después de pasar aguín tiempo con los demás miembros hemos aprendido
a confiar en uno a otro y para hacer una diferencia. Creo firmemente que como
un miembro de la comunidad debe intentar dar un poco de su tiempo libre a
ayudar no solo a nuestros jóvenes sino a los otros ciudadanos. Una vez que
hacemos eso y tirar cualquier agenda y mirar el panorama general, que es la
ciudad de McFarland y de sus ciudadanos, hacemos esta pequeña ciudad un
lugar mejor para vivir.

CalRecycle requires a reduction of landfill waste of 75 percent by 2020.
To accomplish this goal of waste reduction, the City of McFarland and R&F
Disposal will implement new policies and procedures as well as enforce the city
ordinances to ensure the city is complying with the state regulations.
Beginning February 1, 2016 R&F Disposal will:
• Tag Blue and Green recycling carts filled with trash or contaminated.
The tag will describe the violation and after the third violation it will result in a $25 fine.
• Require waste and recycling carts be level with the rim of the cart and
the lid MUST be closed. R&F will no longer service carts that are overfilled or placed in the wrong location. If the cart is overfilled on your service day you will be required to level it off so the lid will close and call R&F
Disposal to reschedule your pick up for an additional cost or wait until
your next service day.

Our student-athletes were invited to several national competitions. Our
students interested in the visual and performing arts traveled across
our state to perform in various important venues. Yet none of this could
happen if it were not for the highly qualified and caring teachers and
support staff that work hard to meet the needs of each of our students.
We do not discount any student! Moreover, high percentages of our staff
are graduates of McFarland High School and have had or currently have
their children in our schools.
Therefore, it is with great pride that my two daughters attend
McFarland schools and will graduate Cougars with the classes of 2020
and 2023!
