L
a apertura de la autopista en el norte de la isla se ha
retrasado. El último revés para el proyecto de 65,7 millones
viene en forma de un déficit de 17€ millones debido a los
recortes estatales sobre su financiación. Mientras que el
70% del trabajo se ha completado, las previsiones sugieren que el tramo entre
La Caldereta y Lajares, estará operativo en 2017. Esta noticia ha de resultar
irritante para quienes actualmente tienen que circular por las obras de la
carretera “temporal” entre Corralejo y Tamaragua.
En una nota más positiva, el trabajo en el sur de la isla está progresando sin
problemas. Afortunadamente, esta parte de la autopista no se ve afectada, ya
que la financiación para su construcción viene de la UE. Como tal, se espera
que esta sección de la pista sea terminada a finales de 2015.

he opening of the motorway in the north of the island
has been delayed. The latest setback to the 65.7
million project comes in the form of a 17 million euro
shortfall, due to state enforced cutbacks to funding.
Whilst 70% of the work has been completed, forecasts nevertheless
suggest the earliest the La Caldereta to Lajares stretch will be operational
is 2017. This news will be an irritant to those who currently have to
navigate the “temporary” road works between Corralejo and Tamaragua.
On a more positive note, operations in the south of the island are
progressing smoothly. Fortunately this part of the motorway is unaffected,
as EU funding is in place for its construction. As such, this particular
section of the carriageway is expected to be finished by the end of 2015.

parts of Europe ensures the continued appeal of our island, as visitors seek solace
in some winter sunshine. Initial indications for the period are certainly positive, with

and her unique version of Mr and Mrs! There is also a BBQ,
priced at €6, with 20% donated to the charity. Into the evening

Away” perform an array of hits, a raffle and finally Karaoke.

os planes para la autopista de la isla, que una vez terminen
unirán Corralejo y Morro Jable, han sido lanzados al caos.
Ello se debe a los presupuestos estatales iniciales para 2015 que
no incluyen la financiación para completar el tramo en el norte de
la isla. De hecho, es poco probable que se ponga a disposición
alguna financiación estatal para este fin antes del 2017. No es la primera vez
que el trabajo se ha retrasado en la autopista, que debería haber entrado
en funcionamiento en 2012. Debido a cambios en el proyecto y recortes
presupuestarios, la construcción ha parado en numerosas ocasiones. Casi
todo el trabajo se ha completado en el tramo de La Caldereta a Lajares, sólo
le falta la señalización, ésta va conectada a la red de carreteras existente. Sin
embargo, el problema existe en la parte final, situada entre Lajares y Corralejo.

turmoil. For initial state budgets for 2015 do not include funding
to complete the section in the north of the island. Indeed, it is
unlikely any state funding will be made available for this purpose
before 2017. This is not the first time work has been halted on the roadway,
which should have become operational in 2012. Due to modifications to plans
and budget cuts, construction has been held up on numerous occasions.
The majority of work has been completed on the stretch from La Caldereta to
Lajares, which only lacks signage and to be connected to the existing road
network. However, the problem area is the final portion, situated between
Lajares and Corralejo.

Como consecuencia de ello, los conductores deberán
seguir utilizando la carretera temporal entre Corralejo y
Tamaragua. El Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, el gobierno de
Canarias y el Cabildo han destacado la viabilidad sobre la
posibilidad de abrir este tramo ya completado. Este se ubica
detrás de las dunas de Corralejo y va hasta Lajares, aunque
lamentablemente ha sido despedida como una opción viable
por temores de crear congestión entre Lajares y Corralejo.
Con preocupaciones hacia el acceso y seguridad a la entrada
de Corralejo, parece ser que lo más temprano será realizado
en 2017. El director de Infraestructura Viaria del Gobierno
de Canarias, Juan Medina Aguiar, declaró: “La dotación
económica que hay no permite continuar. Nuestra idea era
terminar esta vía antes de 2017”.

legendario visualizó que ésta le proporcionaba un telón de fondo perfecto

no fueron coches los que atravesaban la pista, sino más bien una tropa
de soldados egipcios del Faraón Ramses que marchaban a lo largo de la

already been used. For when filming
of the Hollywood blockbuster “Exodus”
took place at the turn of the year, an
impromptu decision by Director Ridley Scott saw the motorway explode into to
life. The legendary moviemaker felt it provided him with the perfect backdrop for
a specific scene in the film. In this case however it was not cars that traversed
the tarmac, but rather a garrison of Egyptian soldiers of Pharaoh Ramses that
marched along the road!

o close in a more positive fashion, work on the southern stretch looks set
to continue, as EU funding underwrites this part of the motorway. With
construction ongoing between Matas Blancas and Peceensescal, the 34 million
project is on course to be completed by the end of 2015.

AUMENTO EN INVIERNO

as estimaciones iniciales indican que los operadores turísticos
han aumentado el número de asientos de avión disponibles a
la isla en un 18,7%, para la próxima temporada de invierno. Con la
temporada de verano llegando a su fin, las compañías aéreas han
ido reservando sus plazas de invierno en el aeropuerto. Cuando
se compara con el mismo período del año pasado, se da un gran aumento del
18,7% en los vuelos internacionales, así como un aumento del 14.1% en vuelos
nacionales. Hasta ahora, en 2014, poco más de 1,5 millones de visitantes han
llegado a través del
aeropuerto, hasta
finales de agosto.

ueve personas han sido
detenidas después de
que la Agencia Tributaria y la
Guardia Civil hayan confiscado
artefactos falsificados por un
valor de 6,4 millones euros.

de una operación conjunta
en Corralejo, que vio a los
delincuentes, todos ellos de
origen chino, arrestados durante un control de numerosos locales. Los nueve
son residentes de Fuerteventura y han sido acusados de delitos contra la
propiedad intelectual. Los detenidos habían estado bajo observación durante
los últimos tres meses, desde que se encontró un paquete con destino a
Fuerteventura. Este contenía placas y logotipos de marcas de diseñadores
conocidos, que se usan para bolsos, cinturones y ropa. En total, se visitaron
once locales, incautándose además productos como relojes, bolsos y gafas de
sol. Los inspectores de la seguridad social estuvieron presentes en la redada
para verificar la situación laboral de los trabajadores de cada local.
WINTER INCREASE

I
nitial estimates indicate tour operators have increased the
number of aircraft seats available to the island by 18.7%, for the
forthcoming winter season. With the summer season drawing to a
close, airlines have been reserving their winter slots at the airport.
When compared to the same period last year, there is a huge
18.7% increase in international flights, as well as a 14.1% rise in national flights.
So far in 2014, just over 1.5 million visitors have arrived via the airport, up to and
including the end of August. This adds to what has been a continued month on
month increase compared to 2013. Indeed, the figure is so impressive that there
remains a strong possibility the all-time record for visitors to the island will be
broken. A full breakdown of these visitors reveal Germany and Great Britain have
remained the core markets, with 518,894 tourists (an increase of 20.96%) and
339,995 (an increase of 22.09%) respectively. Significant increases have also
been recorded in the French, Italian and Polish markets.

he Tourism Councillor for the island, Blas Acosta was delighted with the data,
but called on businesses to create extra employment and thus provide a
better quality of service to visitors. Mr Acosta said, “The statistics for August and
those accumulated throughout 2014 reinforce a positive trend in international
and national markets, which will soon complete a year of continual growth.
This continued posting of monthly records in the number of tourists provides an
opportunity that everyone, including businessmen and government, must take
advantage of to gain new clients and generate jobs that guarantee a higher level
of service for visitors.”
ARRESTS
ine people have been arrested after police and tax officials seized counterfeit
N
products worth an estimated 6.4 million euros. The goods were confiscated
after a joint operation in Corralejo, which saw the offenders, all of whom were
of Chinese origin, arrested during a raid of numerous premises. The nine are
all residents of Fuerteventura and have been charged on various breaches of
copyright regulations. Those detained have been monitored for the last three
months, ever since a package destined for Fuerteventura was found. This
contained labels and logos of well known designer brands, to be affixed to bags,
belts and clothing. In total, eleven premises were searched with goods including
watches, bags and sunglasses also impounded. Social security officials were
present at the raid to verify the employment status of the workers found on each
premises.

bíblica dirigida por el prominente director Ridley
Scott. El rodaje de la película tuvo lugar aquí en
Fuerteventura, grabándose muchas de las escenas
en Cofete y El Cotillo. El primer vistazo al producto
terminado llegó este verano, con la publicación de un
primer tráiler. Más recientemente, la productora 20th
Century Fox ha publicado un segundo y más largo

“EXODUS” PREMIER
A
s the eagerly awaited Hollywood movie Exodus draws
ever closer to hitting the big screens
in December, the main star of the
production Christian Bale praised
the locations used for filming in Fuerteventura.
The film’s full title is “Exodus: Gods and Kings”
and is a biblical epic directed by prominent director
Ridley Scott. Shooting of the film took place here in
Fuerteventura with many scenes recorded in Cofete
and El Cotillo. The first glimpse of the finished
product came this summer when a trailer was made
public. More recently a second, lengthier trailer was
released by the production company, 20th Century
Fox.

his will certainly heighten public
excitement surrounding the movie
and is sure to spark interest, prior to its
debut on the big screen on December
12th. As well as Christian Bale, it
stars Hollywood giants Joel Edgerton,
John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Ben
Mendelsohn, Sigourney Weaver and
Ben Kingsley. Speaking to journalists
about the film, Bale said, “The truth is
there are some amazing backdrops.
We went to the Canaries and to one of
the islands (Fuerteventura) and there
Ridley (Scott), on one of the beaches,
filmed a scene which showed the
parting of the Red Sea with hundreds
of extras and animals. It really was
awesome”.

TERMINA SEGÚN LOS PLAZOS

HOSPITAL ON TARGET
O
ngoing building work at the island’s hospital is expected to
finish on schedule, with completion due by the end of this
year. Amplification and improvement of facilities to Fuerteventura´s
solitary hospital have been ongoing for the last decade. Part of the
overhaul includes the emergency department, which is one of the
last parts to be finished. The total cost of the refurbishment is 55
million euros.
I
n recent months, the work has been subject to much criticism
from various political parties. These complaints range from the
amount of time the improvements have taken, to the overall cut
in funding and reduction of bed numbers. Once completed, the
hospital will have more than doubled in size to a total of 44,655m2.
Likewise, the number of beds has increased, with 143 beds made
available for stays of more than 24 hours, an increase of 23 beds,
and 74 beds for stays of less than 24 hours, which represents an
increase of 56 beds.

SECOND ITV CENTRE
T
he current monopoly in Fuerteventura on testing for a car´s ITV (the
Spanish equivalent of a car´s MOT) will soon be over. For a secondary ITV
centre will soon be built, to be operated by a different private company to that
located in Antigua. With an investment of 2.5 million euros, the company behind
the new centre, Gestión Mederos, hope to be able to service 20,000 cars a
year. With work expected to be underway shortly, it was even mooted the
inspection centre could be open by next summer.
Building works are expected to take around seven
months to complete. In a recent interview, the
company stated their intention is to provide better
customer service to clients, which would
include longer daily opening hours, as well
as opening on Saturdays. With a staff of 15
experienced workers, they hope to provide
an efficient and personal service for their
customers.

he creation of this centre is due to
recent changes in state legislation which
regulate the sector. In this regard, additional
sites have already opened in other islands,
including Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La
Palma, with another soon to open in Tenerife.
The new centre will be located on the Costa
Antigua Industrial estate next to the petrol
station.

APPREHENDED!
os personas fueron detenidas por la Guardia Civil en el sur de la isla, ya
que fueron sorprendidas robando un piano de cola. El incidente ocurrió
en un complejo en el municipio de Pájara. Los agentes de policía recibieron
una llamada telefónica de un preocupado residente, que vio a los ladrones
llevándose el piano y cargarlo en una furgoneta. Respondiendo al chivatazo,
los agentes pudieron interceptar el vehículo cerca de Esquinzo, pues los
delincuentes trataban de hacer su escapada. De hecho el piano de cola se
encontraba en la parte posterior, por lo que la policía detuvo a los protagonistas
masculinos, una vez confirmado que el piano en realidad había sido robado y no
meramente prestado.

having confirmed the piano had actually been stolen and not merely borrowed!

os miembros de la Asociación de Empresarios de Hostelería y Turismo de
Fuerteventura (Aehtf) han celebrado una reunión reciente con la alcaldesa
de Antigua para resaltar sus preocupaciones sobre la recogida de basura en la
zona turística del municipio, Caleta de Fuste.
Una serie de huelgas han tenido lugar en el
municipio de Antigua en los últimos meses,
siendo el centro de la cuestión la falta de
pago de los trabajadores. El último incidente
tuvo lugar a principios de agosto y provocó
contenedores desbordados de basura, con
los residuos creando una horrible imagen de
cara a nuestros visitantes, sobra hablar de los
posibles riesgos para la salud asociados.

l Ayuntamiento reiteró su creencia de estar
cumpliendo con sus obligaciones, pagando
a la empresa Hermanos de Santana Cazorla
para llevar a cabo el trabajo. Sin embargo,
durante la reunión, la AEHTF expresó su
preocupación por las huelgas y la imagen
negativa creada en la zona. También se
plantearon otras cuestiones en relación con
el ajardinamiento, iluminación, señalización en las vías. La alcaldesa, Genara
Ruíz prometió tomar nota de las sugerencias del empresariado.

a temporada de cruceros ha llegado de nuevo, siendo el “Celebrity Eclipse”
el primero en atracar en Puerto del Rosario. A partir de ahora los barcos
atracarán hasta mediados de abril, asimismo 72 buques están programados
para amarrar de forma frecuente en los próximos meses. Muchos de los
barcos que llegarán incluyen algunos nombres conocidos de años anteriores.
Hablamos del AIDAcara, AIDAblu, Mein Schiff 3 y el Thomson Majesty.
Las autoridades de la isla prevén una temporada extraordinaria, como
Fuerteventura continúa consolidando su posición en el mapa internacional
de cruceros. Una vez más, la isla se está beneficiando del re-enrutamiento
de los cruceros de las zonas potencialmente conflictivas. El total de este año
representará uno más que el año pasado, estimándose que unos 100 mil

embers of the Association of Hotels and Fuerteventura Tourism (AEHTF)
held a recent meeting with the Mayoress of Antigua to highlight their
concerns over rubbish collection in the county´s touristic resort, Caleta de
Fuste. A number of strikes have taken place
in the Antigua municipality in recent months,
with the hub of the issue non-payment of
waste disposal workers wages. The latest
incident took place at the beginning of August
and saw refuse bins overflowing, with the
unsightly waste creating a terrible image
for our visitors, not to mention the potential
associated health risks.

he Town Hall reiterated their belief they
are fulfilling their obligations, having paid
the company Hermanos Santana Cazorla
to carry out the work. However, during
the meeting the AEHTF voiced concerns
over the strikes and the negative image it
created for the resort. Other issues were
also raised, with issues raised concerning
landscaping, lighting and road signage. The
mayoress, Genara Ruiz promised to look into these complaints and instigate
any improvements necessary.

en Antigua. Llevándose la votación de los diversos temas en línea a través
de Facebook, el ganador fue “El Cine”. Este obtuvo el primer puesto con 65
Facebook “me gusta”, en segundo lugar se registró “La Edad Media” con 49
votos. La esperada película de Hollywood grabada en Fuerteventura “Exodus”
en diciembre, tal vez influyó en que los residentes optasen por la tema del
cine para las festividades del próximo año. El carnaval se celebrará del 5 al
14 de febrero, con las fiestas acabando en Caleta de Fuste. Por lo tanto, los
residentes de la zona quedan avisados con bastante antelación para planificar
y diseñar sus elegantes disfraces.

he dates and theme for next year´s Antigua carnival have been announced.
With voting for the differing themes conducted online using Facebook,
the eventual winner was “Films”. This came first with 65 Facebook “likes”
with “The Middle Ages” in second registering 49 votes. Due to the release of
Fuerteventura´s very own Hollywood block buster “Exodus” in December, it
is perhaps fitting residents elected to choose films for next year´s theme! The
carnival will be held from February 5th until the 14th, with the festivities finishing
in Caleta de Fuste. Residents of the area therefore have plenty of notice in
which to plan and design their fancy dress costumes!

y Thomson, ha acordado una cláusula de rescisión de su matriz
alemana TUI AG. Está creciendo el temor de que la súper empresa
podría ser muy dura con respecto a las negociaciones
presupuestarias con hoteles y complejos dentro de
Canarias. El nuevo conglomerado tendrá un valor
de unos 6,5 millones de euros a precios de mercado
actual y pone fin a años de especulaciones sobre
una fusión completa. Tales rumores han sido una
constante desde la formación del grupo de viajes TUI
en 2007. La compañía estima lograr un ahorro de al
menos 45 millones de euros al año, lo que dará lugar
inevitablemente a muchas pérdidas de empleo en el
Reino Unido. Se espera que el acuerdo se cumpla a
principios de 2015. Ello deja a hoteles y complejos
inquietos, pues las estimaciones iniciales sugieren que la
compañía podría ser responsable de un tercio de todos

parent company TUI AG. Fears are mounting the super
company could play hard ball in respect to budget
negotiations with hotels and complexes within
the Canaries. The new conglomerate will be
worth around 6.5 billion euros at today´s market
prices and brings to an end years of speculation
surrounding a full blown merger. Such rumours
have been a constant since the formation of
TUI travel in2007. The company estimates cost
savings of at least 45 million euros a year will
be achieved, which will inevitably result in many
job losses in the UK. The deal is expected to go
through early in 2015. This has left hotels and
complexes uneasy, as initial estimates suggest
the company could account for a third of all
tourists visiting the Canaries annually. This will
make the company extremely powerful when
negotiating contracts, fuelling fears hotels may be forced to accept lower prices
for room bookings.

he 27th International Kite Festival will be held on the Corralejo Sand Dunes
from the 6th to the 9th of November. The event dates back to 1987, when
a group of keen amateur kite flyers decided to hold an annual celebration
of their favourite pastime. Since then it has steadily grown and become an
eagerly awaited annual occurrence in the north of the island’s social calendar.
In recent years, professional flyers and enthusiasts from around the world have
gathered, with hundreds of spectators in attendance to watch the incredible
sight. It really is a quite stunning view with hundreds of kites of all shapes, sizes
and designs transforming the sky to a sea of undulating colour. For anybody
who has never witnessed this first hand, Fuertextra would recommend a visit to
sample this unusual experience.

DRILLING TO BE MONITORED
A
s the search for oil off Fuerteventura and Lanzarote draws ever closer to commencing, assurances have been given by the Spanish Government.
They have stated that exploration will be closely monitored to ensure oil
company Repsol adheres to exploring only the areas for which approval has
been granted. With the company set to use a ship to drill bore holes rather
than fixed rigs, concern had been mounting they may drill beyond
their allocated zones, to increase their chances of success. The
Government’s actions will not only reassure the public, but in all
likelihood prevent Repsol from any transgression. It will be left to
the Navy to ensure the company does not stray from within the
areas designated. For this purpose, a 94 metre Tornado with a crew
of 42 will regularly police the area and monitor the movements of
the vessel. The Tornado has been recently sighted in Lanzarote, in
readiness for undertaking this task. Its previous missions include
operating anti-piracy measures, off the coast of Somalia, as well as
drug related intercepts in international waters off the Canaries.

chances of striking and producing
oil, off the Fuerteventura and
Lanzarote coasts, are as little
as 15%. This is lower than the
20% the company claimed when
they first presented their case
for exploration to the Spanish
government. Nevertheless,
this backtracking is unlikely
to slow them down, as they
have completed nearly all the
logistics necessary to start their
exploratory drilling. A November
start date is still a possibility, as
they only await the arrival of a
ship, which has been operating
in the Angola oil fields, before
getting underway.

s the summer drew to a close, the Spanish Met Office released official data relating to the weather enjoyed within
the Canary Islands during this season. Whilst many may have
believed it to have been especially hot, the figures show this was
not actually the case. For there was only one official heat wave,
albeit with a duration of only two days, which took place at the end
of June/beginning of July. So far this year there have only been 13
days of this type, resulting in abnormally high temperatures being
registered by the Met Office. When compared to statistics for both
2012 and 2013, this is significantly fewer than in the recent past.
For during the same period in each of the aforementioned years,
over 30 such days were recorded.

it was one of the driest over the last 70 years, with only 2.2mm
of rainfall, compared to the usual 11mm. Here in Fuerteventura,
many believe September to be the hottest month of the year. This
belief is due to the tendency for the wind to drop at the same time
as temperatures soar. The view was once again proved to be
correct by the official figures, with an especially hot period at the
beginning of the month particularly noteworthy.

¿“OTRAS” ISLAS CANARIAS?

xploraciones submarinas han revelado
que puede haber habido otras islas en el
Archipiélago en algún momento. A raíz de la
exploración del año pasado de una montaña
submarina, más tarde llamada Concepción
por los científicos a bordo del buque de
investigación oceanográfica Hespérides, se han
comenzado estudios sobre otras dos montañas
submarinas. Estas se encuentran a 190 y 110
millas náuticas al norte de La Graciosa, la
pequeña isla situada al norte de Lanzarote. Han
sido denominadas Dacia y Tritón y se cree que
en el pasado han estado por encima del nivel
del mar, muchos millones de años atrás.

Oceana Ranger, que ha topografiado
digitalmente las dos montañas. Tritón tiene dos
picos y se extiende a lo largo de 60 kilómetros,

“OTHER” CANARY ISLANDS?
U
ndersea explorations have revealed there may have
been additional islands in the archipelago at some point.
Following on from last year’s exploration of a submarine
mountain, later named Conception by scientists aboard the
Hesperides oceanographic research ship, investigations have
started on two further mountains. These are located 190 and
110 nautical miles to the north of La Graciosa, itself a small
island situated to the north of Lanzarote. These have been
named Dacia and Tritón and are thought to have once been
above sea level, many millions of years ago.

esearch has been undertaken by the Oceana
Ranger, which has digitally mapped the two
mountains. Tritón was found to have two peaks and
stretches to a length of 60 kilometres, whilst Dacia
has a diameter of just over 20 kilometres. Both surge
up from the sea floor, which has a depth of 3,000
metres and each measure around 2,000 metres in
height. Tritón and Dacia form part of a range of
mountains that runs between the Canary Islands,
Madeira, the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco.

to express their interest in using the Islands as a potential base is run by a group of
Canadian investors. They are set to present their findings sometime during the first
quarter of 2015 to executives in Toronto and Calgary. These investors had been targeted
by the Canarian Government, as they are among industry leaders in mining natural
resources. Their portfolio already includes over a thousand companies, operating across
fifty African countries. In return for using the Canaries as a base for their operations, the
companies are being offered highly competitive tax incentives.

Golfers set record

uertextra tuvo el placer de asistir en lo que se ha convertido
en un evento importante en el calendario del
golf en Fuerteventura, hablamos
de la cuarta celebración del torneo
de golf anual de Mustang Sally. Ha sido
un nuevo record histórico, pues, con la
participación de 60 golfistas, el evento
mantuvo su fenomenal crecimiento. El año
pasado, 49 personas tomaron el campo,
frente a 36 en 2012 y 24 en 2011. No es de
extrañar que el bar Mustang Sally, ubicado
en el complejo de Antigua Bay en Costa de
Antigua, se haya convertido en sinónimo de
golf, dado que también organiza dos veces
por semana días de golf. Incluso cuenta con su
propia versión de la Copa Ryder, véase en la
foto el equipo de Dublín derrotando al resto del
mundo en el evento de 2014.
El 20 de septiembre fue un día particularmente
especial, ya que todos los ingresos del golf y
actividades nocturnas posteriores serían donados
al Hospital de Niños Crumlin en Dublín. En vista
de esto, fue apropiado que los vencedores de la
competición de este año fuesen dirigidos por un
dublinés, Keith Browne del Step Inn. Junto a él, y
en el equipo ganador, estaba Pete, el propietario
de Bar 4, Bill Craig y el propio Lee Beevor de
Fuertextra (junto al entrenador/Caddy Robert
Campbell en la foto). Además, Bill ganó un
premio extra de una cena de langosta para
dos en Nestor´s Restaurant, en virtud de ser el
más cercano al pin en el hoyo 12.
Las festividades de la noche comenzaron con
un gran buffet, incluyendo algunas carnes
frías suculentas. Muchos bailaron, ya que
Kevin Archer cantó algunos grandes éxitos. A
partir de entonces como es tradicional, MC Jimmy
realizó la esperada rifa y subasta. Cada año, el
anfitrión y dueño de Mustang Sally, John Stone,
logra traer algo especial a los procedimientos. Esta
vez se podían conseguir las sedas de carreras de
caballos firmadas por AP McCoy y JP McManus,
además se subastó una gorra de golf firmada por
Padraig Harrington y Paul Lawrie. Con una oferta

what has become a major event on the
golfing calendar in Fuerteventura, namely
the fourth hosting of the Mustang Sally’s
annual golf tournament. With a highest ever 60
golfers participating, the event maintained its
phenomenal growth rate. Last year 49 people took
to the fairways, up from 36 in 2012 and 24 in 2011.
Little wonder that Mustang Sally’s bar, situated in
the Antigua Bay complex, Costa de Antigua, has
become synonymous with golf, given that it also
arranges twice weekly society golf days. They
even have their own version of the Ryder Cup,
with Team Dublin (pictured) defeating the rest of
the world in the 2014 incarnation!
September 20th was a particularly special day,
as all proceeds from the golf and subsequent
evening activities were to be donated to
Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin. In
view of this, it was fitting that the victors of
year’s competition were led by a Dubliner,
namely Keith Browne of the Step Inn.
Alongside him in the winning team was
Pete, the proprietor of Bar 4, Bill Craig and
Fuertextra’s own Lee Beevor (pictured with
coach/caddie Robert Campbell). Bill earned
himself the bonus of a lobster dinner for two
at Nestor’s Restaurant, by virtue of being
nearest the pin on the 12th.
The evening’s festivities started with a lavish
buffet, including some wonderfully
succulent joints of meat. Many took
to the dance floor as Kevin Archer
belted out the hits. Thereafter as is
traditional, MC Jimmy conducted the
raffle and eagerly anticipated auction.
Every year, host and Mustang Sally’s
owner John Stone manages to bring
something special to proceedings.
This time around racing silks signed
by AP McCoy and JP McManus,
plus a golf cap signed by Padraig
Harrington and Paul Lawrie, were
up for grabs. With a combined
bid of €580, Keith ensured these
particular treasures were secured
to adorn the wall of the Step Inn!
In total, the day’s proceeds
amounted to €3,000, the majority
of which is off to Crumlin, albeit
donations were made to the
Costa de Antigua Resident’s Association
and several local charities. In total, in excess of €8,000
has been raised by the four tournaments to date. A justifiably proud
John Stone, asked us to pass on his thanks to the many people who have helped
to make the event so successful.

on September 26, whereby people all over the country hosted
events to raise money for the charity. Participation in 2013
was at record levels as 154,000 registered to hold their own
gathering, generating €24 million for McMillan.

s a part of the 2014 staging, Fuerteventura added an
international flavour, with Cafe
Gala in the Atlantico commercial
centre joining in, to allow
residents and holidaymakers to
make their own contributions.
The idea originated from Lindsey
and Mark Elwell with the venue’s
owner Gala, delighted to allow
her Cafe to be taken over for the
morning in question. And taken
over it was, as people attended
in their droves to buy a cake and
make a donation. Fuertextra
put their diet on hold for a few
hours, to sample from the array of
delights baked or bought by local
residents, including many from
Gala herself. €345 was raised,
with an extra €5 subsequently
donated, making a grand total of
€350.

uring their most recent neutering
campaign, 203 cats and
kittens were admitted to the vets
for neutering or to receive medical
attention. Once this was complete,
efforts were made where possible
to find homes for the animals. In
addition, the Twinkle Trust has 17 cat
cafes located throughout the resort
of Caleta de Fuste. These allow
homeless
cats to
have
somewhere
to eat and
obtain
fresh water
and are maintained entirely thanks to the efforts of
volunteers.

the latest walk for animals,
which took place on October 5,
raised a total of €380. As ever, this
was divided equally between the
organiser’s designated charities El Capitan, Kitz ‘n’ Katz, Twinkle
Trust and Hilfe Fur Fuerte-Hunde.

he group made for quite a
sight, as they started their
stroll on mass from the Caleta
harbour, before winding their way
around the seafront to Costa de
Antigua. Considering the causes
involved, it was however fitting
that so many four legged friends
accompanied their owners, for
what was a very pleasant Sunday
morning outing.

There were lots of amazing auctions with
lots donated not only from hotels here on

following the closure of a beach to host a celebration
of his recent marriage. Blunt and Sofia Wellesley,

holding their third wedding bash after an official ceremony
in London at the start of September, followed by a religious
event held in Majorca. Thereafter, the couple flew over
to neighbouring Ibiza where they had paid an events
company to set up a wedding banquet on
s’Estanyol beach in the south east of the

elipe VI’s nephew, fourth in line to the Spanish throne, has cemented his
reputation as the black sheep of the royal family, having been kicked out of
his school. Sixteen-year-old Felipe Juan Froilán de Marichalar y Borbón, known
to most Spaniards simply as Froilán, has been likened to ‘Prince Harry’ of the
British royal family. Froilán has previously attracted press coverage for shooting
himself whilst hunting with his father at age 14. Since then he has experienced
disciplinary problems at school, compounded by his failure to pass end of year
exams. Spain’s rebel royal, described by his teachers as having “a big heart”
but behaving “like a rascal in class” is likely to be enrolled in an exclusive
boarding school in Sussex, South East England, in a bid to rectify his errant

elcome to extrasport. This is a period of the year when many
major sports reach the end of their respective seasons. In
tennis, the grand slams are over, leaving the World Tour
Finals the remaining major engagement on the calendar.
Here, the eight players to qualify compete for an outrageous amount
of money in what is the sport’s equivalent of the play-offs. Starting
on November 9, the contestants are divided into two groups, with the
victors and runners-up competing in the semi-finals, prior to the grand
final on November 16.
In golf, the Ryder Cup signified the end of the season for the American
team, as the FedEx Cup immediately preceded it. However for the
Europeans, the quest for ludicrous quantities of cash is not quite at an
end. The European tour’s equivalent of the FedEx Cup is the Race to
Dubai, where the top fifteen golfers divide the bonus pool, following
the final series. This consists two events in Shanghai, with the BMW
Masters from October 30 to November 2, followed by the WGC-HSBC
Champions from November 6 – 9. From here, the action swings to
Turkey and the Turkish Airlines Open from 13 – 16, with the grand finale
in Dubai at the DP World Tour Championship from 20 – 23 November.
The forthcoming weeks will finally see the coronation of Marc Marquez
as MotoGP champion for 2014. The final three races are on October 19
in Australia, with a week later the Malaysian GP (October 26), with the
final race in Valencia on November 9. Still to be decided is the runnerup position, which features a battle between Marquez’s team mate Dani
Pedrosa and veteran Valentino Rossi.
In F1, the title race has burst into life as a highly motivated Lewis
Hamilton has closed the gap on Nico Rosberg. The season does not
conclude until the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 23, but with the
European stages complete, there are two races to enjoy before this.
These both take place in the Americas, with the North hosting the USA
GP on November 2, after which the circuit moves south for the Brazilian
Grand Prix on November 9. The mutual loathing of the Mercedes pair
adds to the spice in what should be a thrilling conclusion to F1 in 2014.
Finally, a mention for one sport for which the season is barely underway
– football! As always, there is a packed programme at this time of year,
detailed extensively in our centre page spread, with domestic and
European fixtures ensuring an almost daily diet. Even the international
breaks seem to be arranged in this manner, with the recent qualifiers
helpfully scheduled to ensure not a day passes without a match
screened live in our local bars.

This even permeates into
the group stages, where
any football fan knows
that match days 3 and 4

Whether this is a good thing
is arguable. However, setting
aside any issues of fairness
that may exist, it is fair to say
that this period tends to be
decisive in determining the

Group B is starting to take
shape, albeit not quite as
many would have predicted.

be confident of securing early
qualification, following their
two games against Liverpool.
Liverpool are struggling both
domestically and in Europe
at present, with their loss in
Basel adding to the mounting
pressure upon them. Basel can
intensify this if, as expected, they
secure six points from Ludogorets.
This is not assured however, as the
Bulgarians have competed well in
their opening matches and could
possibly do Liverpool a favour.
In Group C, Benfica is in the last
chance saloon and needs a minimum
of one win against favourites
Monaco to make match day 5 and
6 meaningful. Zenit’s double header
with Leverkusen is likely to be

This will work almost
like a conventional
tie with a home and
away leg ultimately
determining which
will join Chelsea

Therefore, one or both
fixtures could easily end in a

Group H is another where the
finishing positions are harder
to predict. Match days 3 and 4
may end the hopes of Athletic
Bilboa, who cannot afford to
fare badly against Portuguese
champions Porto. Were they to
exit so pitifully it would be a shock,
given the strength of the Spanish
league, but Athletic has a huge task
to qualify, having lost in Bulgaria and
failing to beat Shakhtar at home. The
matches between BATE and Shakhtar
are sure to be played at high intensity,
given the closeness of the group and
importance of these clashes to both
sides prospects in this tight group.

y sus actitudes hacia la muerte son
muy diferentes, a pesar de compartir la
imaginería común. En las festividades
típicas de Halloween, la muerte es algo
a lo que hay que temer, por el contrario
el Día de los Difuntos es un ocasión de
celebración. Es un día de fiesta nacional
en honor a los muertos y una oportunidad
para recordar a los seres queridos que
han fallecido.
Tradicionalmente, se caracteriza por
una visita al cementerio para poner
flores, ordenar la tumba y rezar por los
parientes perdidos. El día se celebra en
toda España de diferentes maneras,
de acuerdo a las diferentes creencias y
tradiciones aplicables a las religiones de
las personas. Sin embargo, regularmente
se prepara una comida en la que se
reúnen todos los miembros de la

Los lectores amantes del ciclismo
entre nuestros lectores estarán
encantados de saber que la carrera de
bicicleta de montaña militar-cívico se
celebrará los días 25 y 26 de octubre.
Será el octavo año del evento y verá
competidores pedalear más de 150
kilómetros. La carrera se pone en
marcha en el norte, con los participantes
saliendo desde Corralejo y terminando
en Morro Jable, en el sur. Alrededor del
90% de la carrera es fuera de pista,
llevándose a cabo la mayor parte de la
ruta por caminos de tierra y senderos.
Como en años anteriores, la carrera se
dividirá en dos categorías: una contará
con participantes de alto nivel y la otra,
con un enfoque más relajado, será de
dos días para los menos competitivos

Saturday the 1st of November is
a national fiesta throughout Spain, as
people remember and celebrate loved
ones who have passed
away. It´s origins date back
deep into history, with the
day itself commonly known
as Día de las Difuntos or
Día de Todos los Santos.
Whilst at first glance many
may believe it to be linked
to the Western celebrations
of Halloween,
it´s customs
have different
origins and their
attitudes toward
death are very
different, despite
sharing common
imagery. In
typical Halloween
festivities, death
is very much
something to
be feared, but Día de las Difuntos
or as it translates into English, Day
of the Dead, is by contrast a time of
celebration. It is a national holiday
honouring the dead
and an opportunity to
remember loved ones
who have passed
away.
It is traditionally
marked by a trip to
the cemetery to lay
flowers, tidy the grave
and pray for lost
relatives. The day is
celebrated across Spain in different
ways, in accordance with the different
beliefs and traditions applicable
to people’s religions. However,
one constant is the holding of
a meal at which all the family
members gather together.

On October 25th there
will be the third “La Noche
en Blanco” held in Antigua,
with events running from 6pm
through to 2am! There will
be an extensive programme
of activities designed for all
ages including exhibitions,
workshops and live music.

enthusiasts amongst

pleased to learn of
the military/civilian
mountain bike race
to be held on the 25
and 26 October. It will be the event´s
8th year and will see competitors
cycle just over 150km. The race gets

The lunch conundrum!
L
a opción más popular entre
los ingleses sobre lo que se
debe comer en el almuerzo
es el humilde sándwich. Es
así, sin duda, porque es fácil de
preparar y rápido de comer para
aquellos que están trabajando.
Desafortunadamente, el pan es alto
en carbohidratos y calorías. Como
tal, para este mes les ofrecemos
algunas alternativas al sándwich,
o al menos a la parte del pan.
Un ejemplo es la sustitución
del pan por varias hojas de
lechuga. En general,
a la hora de elegir el
pan, es especialmente
importante optar por
harina integral, ya sea
pan convencional, pita
o incluso tortillitas. Aquí
hay un par de sabrosas
recetas para probar:
Fattoush
Frecuentemente
es una parte de las
comidas meze en
Oriente Medio y los
países árabes,
fattoush es
una simple
ensalada hecha
con verduras
frescas y pan de
pita tostado. Es una
buena manera de utilizar
el pan de pita un poco
viejo. El plato es originario
de la zona Levantine
de Oriente Medio, que
incluye el Líbano y Siria,
pero se ha extendido
por toda la región
de Oriente Medio
como un plato
popular meze.
Ingredientes (6
porciones)
-½ taza de jugo
de limón
-½ taza de
aceite de oliva
-2 a 4 dientes de ajo picados
-Sal y pimienta al gusto
-2 tazas de lechuga romana
-1 pepino grande o 2 pequeños,
picados finamente
-2 tazas de tomates frescos, picado
en trozos
-½ taza de perejil picado
-¼ taza de hojas de menta picadas
-1 pimiento verde, cortado en
cubitos
-3 cebollinos, finamente picado
-2 piezas de pan de pita tostado
hasta que estén doradas, roto en
pedazos.
Ingredientes opcionales:
-Queso Feta
-Zanahoria
-Pimiento rojo
-Olivas negras
-El fruto de una

-Trozos de
berenjena a la
parrilla
Método
de horno con papel
de aluminio). En un

Ingredientes
-Pan de pita, mejor integral
-Lechuga picada
-2 cebolletas picadas
-1 tallo de apio cortado en
rodajas finas
-1 zanahoria picada
-1/3 taza de pimiento rojo
picado
-½ taza de queso rallado
-Una pizca de sal
-Mayonesa
-Tomates, cortados (opcional)
Método
Untar la mayonesa dentro del pan
pita (si se desea se puede tostar
primero ligeramente el pan de pita).
Mezcla los vegetales. Rellene cada
mitad de pita con ensalada y luego
añada las verduras para terminar.

because it is easy to prepare
and eat swiftly for those that
are on the go. Unfortunately,
the use of bread is high in
carbohydrates and calories.
As such, for this
month we
decided to
provide you
with a few
alternatives to
the sandwich,
or at least
the bread part!
One such example
is by substituting the
bread for several leaves
of lettuce. Sticking to
wholemeal is particularly
important when
choosing breads in
general, whether this
is conventional, pita
or even tortillas and
wraps. Here are a
couple of tasty
recipes to try:
Fattoush
Often a part of
meze spreads
in Middle
Eastern and
Arabic countries,
fattoush is a
simple salad
made with fresh
vegetables and
toasted pita
bread. It’s a
good way
to use
up stale
pita bread.
The dish is
originally
from the
Levantine
region of the Middle
East, which includes
Lebanon and Syria, but has spread
throughout the Middle East region as
a popular meze dish.
Ingredients (makes 6
servings)
-1/2 cup lemon juice
-1/2 cup olive oil
-2 to 4 cloves garlic,
minced
-Salt & pepper to taste

- 2 cups shredded
romaine lettuce
- 1 large or 2 small
cucumbers, small dice
- 2 cups of fresh tomatoes,
quartered in bite-size pieces
- 1/2 cup chopped parsley
- 1/4 cup chopped mint
leaves
- 1 green pepper, diced
- 3 scallions, finely sliced
- 2 pieces of pita bread toasted
until golden brown, broken into
pieces the size of a quarter.
Optional Ingredients:
-Feta cheese
-Carrot
-Red pepper
-Black olive
-Pomegranate

-Grilled Eggplant
Chunks
Method
In a large bowl,
whisk together the
first four ingredients.
Add everything else and
toss well. This keeps very well
in the fridge and can be made
ahead. Serve as a side salad, a
meze plate accompaniment,
or as a filling in a pita
sandwich with some grilled
vegetables and roast
chicken or lamb. Delicious!
Pita Bread stuffed with
Salad
Ingredients
-pita bread, preferably
wholemeal
shredded lettuce
-2 spring onions, sliced
-1 rib celery, sliced
thin or chopped
-1 carrot, diced
-1/3 cup of red bell
pepper, diced
-1/2 cup of grated
cheese
-Dash of salt
-Mayonnaise as spread
-Tomatoes, diced (optional)
Method
Spread mayonnaise inside
bread (if you wanted to
warm the pita bread first
just lightly toast). Toss
vegetables. Fill each
half pita with salad
and then add the
vegetables to finish.

con un abogado independiente, le
guiará a través de cada etapa de la
compra de la casa de sus sueños.
Recientemente, este mandato ha sido
ampliado para incluir una orientación
en cuanto a la eficiencia energética
de su propuesta de compra. Prueba
de ello es el Certificado de Eficiencia
Energética (CEE), que por obligación
legal el vendedor debe proporcionar.
Un abogado se asegurará de que la
propiedad sea adquirida con título
legal completo, libre de deudas, así
como de organizar el poder notarial
en caso de que no esté presente
en los distintos fichajes. Su agente

En nuestra edición anterior,
informamos sobre las predicciones
de los analistas de que los
precios inmobiliarios en España
aumentarán un 2% en 2016. Es
bien sorprendente, pero según las
estadísticas publicadas por el Instituto
Nacional de Estadística (INE) este
hito ya ha sido logrado con dos años
de antelación. Así, el último índice de
precios de viviendas del INE muestra
un aumentó del 0,8% en el segundo
trimestre respecto al año anterior, el
primer incremento anual en el índice
ya que el mercado se derrumbó en
2008.
El salto más grande registrado ha
sido en relación a los precios de las
casas nuevas, que aumentaron un
1,9%, aunque hubo menos en esta
categoría por volumen que hace
un año. Los precios para reventas
aumentaron marginalmente un
0,2%. Cuando se compara con el
primer trimestre de 2014, los precios
inmobiliarios aumentaron un 1,7%.
El índice del INE está en línea con
otros informes recientes, que también
han mostrado un ligero aumento
en los precios. Así por ejemplo, el
Colegio de Registradores mostró
un aumento del 1% en sus cifras en
el segundo trimestre, y el portal de
propiedad fotocasa.es informó que
los precios inmobiliarios subieron en
agosto respecto a julio.
En términos de la industria, el índice
del INE se considera como una buena
guía para la dirección en la que el
mercado se está moviendo. Sin duda,
este último dato de vivienda refuerza
la percepción de que el mercado
camina hacia delante e incluso puede
llegar a mejoras en las estimaciones
de los analistas,

reducido un 8,3% en los
últimos doce meses,

reventas han

en el mismo
período. De esto
podemos concluir
que el número
de las llamadas

interior provinces is increasing. For
example, in Cáceres (Extremadura)
sales are up by 87%, albeit from a

Looking at sales by previous
ownership, the trend favouring
resales is continuing strongly. Sales
of new builds are down by 8.3% in
the last twelve months, whereas
resales have surged by 26.8% in
the same period. From this we
can conclude that the number of
so-called new homes that people
actually want to buy is dwindling. I
use the term so-called as most of
these properties were finished at
least five years ago. If anything, this
state of affairs is likely to speed up
the return of building contractors
to the market, as clearly the time is
right for quality off-plan offerings.
Analysts that predicted building to
recommence in 2015 may well be
proved to have been spot on with
their forecasts.

is the largest tourist resort in Fuerteventura. Situated in the north, it boasts a Ferry link with the neighbouring island of Lanzarote.
Corralejo provides all of the attractions one would expect from such a resort, with a large selection of restaurants and bars to cater for every taste. The shopping

Cualquier persona que haya
tenido un perrito en su casa será
muy consciente de los aspectos
menos deseables que acompañan
a la alegría de su presencia.
Inevitablemente, habrá una serie
de accidentes, suciedad y mal
comportamiento hasta que
el cachorro se acostumbre
a las reglas básicas de
su nuevo hogar. Sin
embargo, es justo decir que
todas las razas no son iguales,
así pues algunas pueden
considerarse en particular
más dificultosas. Con
esto en mente, el club
American Kennel (AKC) ha
compartido su opinión sobre
esas razas caninas que
no son tan ideales
para una familia sin
experiencia a la
hora de elegir su
primera mascota.
Una raza considerada
como la definitiva,
si es dueño de un
perrito por primera
vez, es el Border
Collie. Descrito por
el AKC como el perro más
“adicto al trabajo”, el Border
Collie es muy enérgico.
Este prospera cuando tiene
trabajo que hacer y espacio
donde correr y, como tal,
necesita mucho más ejercicio
que un paseo rápido.
Si los propietarios no
saben cómo mantener
a su Border Collie
suficientemente estimulado, ocupado
y ejercitado, es posible que éste
desarrolle problemas de conducta.
Otros perros que la organización
considera por una razón u otra como
razas difíciles son algunos géneros
menos conocidos procedentes
de todo el mundo. En aras de
la realización, los mencionados
fueron el Cane Corso, Skye Terrier,
Sabueso, Bloodhound, Treeing
Walker Coonhound, Australian
Cattle Dog, Tibetan Mastiff y
el Akita.

Anybody that has taken a puppy
into their home will be well aware
of the less desirable aspects that
accompany the joy of
its presence. For it
is inevitable there
will be a series of
accidents, messes and
unruly behaviour, as
the puppy gets used to
the ground rules of its
new home. However, it is
fair to say that not all breeds
are the same and that
there are those that can
be deemed particularly
testing. With this in mind,
the American Kennel
Club (AKC) has shared
its opinions on those
breeds of dog that
are not ideal for an
inexperienced family
to choose for their first
pet.
The breed considered
to be a definite one
to avoid for first time
owners, was the Border
Collie. Described by
the AKC as the
“workaholic” of the
dog world, the Border
Collie is highly driven
and extremely energetic.
They thrive when they
have a job to do and
space in which to run and
as such, require much
more exercise than is provided
by a quick walk around the
block. If owners don’t know
how to keep their Border
Collie sufficiently stimulated,
occupied and exercised, it is
likely to develop behavioural
issues.
The others that the
organisation deemed for one
reason or another to be
difficult debut breeds include
some pretty obscure genre,
originating from all over
the world. For the sake of
completion, those listed were
the Cane Corso, Skye Terrier,
Bloodhound, Treeing Walker
Coonhound, Australian Cattle
Dog, Tibetan Mastiff and the
Akita.

to the weight of evidence suggesting
that dogs show jealousy when
their owners spend time with other
animals. This they believe proves
the emotion may have survivalist
roots.
Scientists tested 36 dogs
together with their owners in a

the owners were told to play with
toy dogs in front of their own pet, to
gauge the reaction.
In the majority of cases, the
family pet objected to the
attention bestowed upon the
objects. This was demonstrated
either by snapping, pushing
their owners, pushing against
the offending object or trying
to get between it and their
owner.
The dogs came from a
range of breeds, including
dachshund, Pomeranian,
Boston terrier, Maltese
and pug. Almost half of
those in the study were
mixed breeds.

desarrollado un coche deportivo que
se ejecutará con nada más que agua
salada, lo que garantiza a
los residentes isleños
una fuente de
combustible
nunca
demasiado
lejana.
El Quant e-Sportlimousine
es impulsado por un sistema radical
que permite que el coche de 2.300kg
pueda llegar de 0 a 100 km/h en
2,8 segundos, es tan rápido como
el McLaren P1. Por
otra parte, este
milagro elegante
de la ingeniería
ha sido diseñado
para alcanzar
velocidades de 350 km/h, llevando tan
sólo agua salada en el tanque.
Después de hacer su debut en
la Feria del Motor en Geneva en
marzo del 2014, la tecnología ha
sido certificada para su uso en las
carreteras europeas. NanoFlowcell
AG, la compañía con sede
en Lichtenstein detrás del
concepto, tiene la intención
de probar el coche en las
carreteras públicas en
Alemania y en otras partes
de Europa, antes de su

technology to boats and aeroplanes.
The 920 horsepower (680 kW) Quant
e-Sportlimousine uses an electrolyte
flow cell power system to power four
motor

electric motors within the car. This
functions similarly to a hydrogen
fuel cell, with the liquid used for
storing energy being saltwater. The
water passes through a membrane
in between the two tanks, creating
an electric charge. This electricity is
then stored and distributed by super
capacitors. The car carries the water in
two 200-litre tanks, which in one sitting
will allow drivers to travel up to 600km.
Overall, the four-seater vehicle is 5.25
metres long, 2.2 metres wide and
1.35 metres in height. No price or sale
date has yet been revealed, but some
experts suggest it could cost more than
€1.2 million.

Jaguar E-Types are one of the
most beloved classic cars in the world,
with none produced since the early
1960s. At this time, the British car
manufacturer made 12 Lightweight
E-Types out of aluminium, although 18
were supposed to be made. Fifty years
later, the final six have been made. The
modern batch has been made to the
original specifications, but amended
to include modern technology. A
prototype is in existence, complete
with a 3.8L 440bhp aluminium engine
block. Executives state the company’s
intention is not to devalue the original
1963 run, as their actions are merely to
complete their original pledge, albeit a
little late!
