December 20, 2015 4th Sunday of Advent Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary WATCHING, WAITING WONDERING, WISHING FOR WHO, FOR WHAT... Page 2 4th Sunday of Advent My dear sisters and brothers, One thing is certain: we all need nourishment to sustain us for the journey. Holy Name of Mary is that oasis for the spirit; it is essential that we recognize this. Angels still are bringing tidings of good joy. Shepherds still tend to the hearts of those who are needy and are willing to let go of the comfortable way to travel to a new place and be surprised with a discovery of a deeper way of living. Wise people still bring gifts but also recognize here at Holy Name the best gift is the gift of self – it’s really all we want. Marys are still saying ‘yes’ to the unknown and remain faithful to their choice. Josephs are awakened from one way of life and are not afraid to risk listening to the voice of God. A baby is born each day reminding us of the power of a loving God who daily breathes new life into us that we may live and grow and become just like God does for our parish, enabling us to live, grow and become. God, send your son into our hearts that he may not only be born there but also continue to grow and mature and take over the direction of our life and parish. May your love of us make Holy Name something of value and worth, a parish family in which you can rejoice. May the stable of our souls be transformed and become a temple filled with your spirit. May our souls be transformed and come a beacon, shedding light in the midst of a dark and troubled world. O Lord, open our minds to a new understanding of your wonderful Word which is such a mystery but is the root of our faith. Open our eyes so we can see the Spirit guiding us and open our hearts to share the Christ within us as we continue the journey of faith thanking you for all that has gone and the future to come: For the faith of mothers and fathers through history and the sons and daughters who followed them, For the visions of prophets and disciples who shared your Word and all who believed them. For obedience of Mary and Joseph called to serve you as parents of Jesus And for the wise people and shepherds who saw a guiding light and heard angels sing so followed to a stable where they found new life in a manger. It was the life of a child, born to be King of a Kingdom to come, who grew to be the man of the cross who died for living your Word but walked from the tomb to give us the hope and mystery of our faith. So, thank you, Lord, for the Manger and the Cross and journey between that gives us new hope when we walk with your Son. May the Angel of Encouragement confirm you in worth and respect. That you may live with the dignity that presides in your soul. With my love and affection, Fr. Rich, SS.CC. Rich, SS.CC. Page 5 From the Director of Administration… What Do You Want for Christmas “What do you want for Christmas?” This is a question we ask each other often before Christmas. Yet how many of us actually take a few minutes to kneel before the infant Jesus and ask Him what He wants from us this Christmas. When we kneel before the manager and ask Jesus what He wants, it is very possible that we will hear Him whisper that He wants us to share a little more of our time with Him. Maybe each of us could make a New Year’s resolution to spend more time with God. Go to Mass more frequently. Find some time for prayer in the morning. End our day with spiritual reading. Say the rosary while we drive to work. Participate in Eucharistic Adoration Stop into church occasionally for a quiet visit. The gift of time with God could be the very best gift we could give this year, not only to Jesus but also to ourselves. It might be just what our own hearts are truly longing for. My First Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below with tiny lights like heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear, for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, for it is beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your hearts. But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me, dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above, I send you each a memory of my undying love. After all, love is the gift, more precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other as my Father said to do, for I can’t count the blessings or love He has for each of you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. A blessing from CSJs Clare Dunn and Judy Lovchik Good morning, good God! It’s almost time for us to give one another gifts on your birthday, Lord: forgive us for getting that mixed up -again- this year! So, there's lots of wrapping going on: paper and foil, gift bags and boxes, tags and tape, ribbons and bows… Everyone’s wrapped up in wrapping, so what I offer you this morning, Lord, are all the things I’m wrapped up in that need unwrapping... I get wrapped up so easily in little things while the big things that matter go undone… Unwrap me, Lord, and keep me faithful to what deserves my priority attention... I get wrapped up in things that waste my time and time is one of my most precious possessions… The St Vincent de Paul Conference will be supplying Christmas food baskets and toys to those in need within our community. If you are in need or know of a family who can use some help this holy season please be encouraged to come to the parish office and fill out a form for a Christmas basket. Or you may call St. Vincent de Paul at (909) 599-1243 x138 if you have any questions. May Christ’s peace be with you. Winter Shelter February 1st through 15th 2016 This February 2016 Holy Name of Mary will be hosting a winter shelter for the homeless. Items we are collecting now: New or slightly used bath towels and new travel sized shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, women's personal hygiene items, shaving cream and disposable razors. All items can be brought to the parish office attention Winter Shelter. Unwrap me, Lord, and make me a good steward of my days and nights, my work, my play and my rest… I get wrapped up in day dreams and fantasies and leave untended the realities I don't want to face… Unwrap me, Lord, and sharpen my vision of what’s real and what will help me truly grow… I get wrapped up in desires for what I should not or cannot have… Unwrap me, Lord, and give me a hunger for what truly nourishes and satisfies… I get wrapped up in hurt and anger that sap my energy for reaching out generously… Unwrap me, Lord, and free my heart to be with others and to do for others… And I wrap myself up in my self, too: in my fears, my worries, my disappointments… Unwrap me, Lord, and let me see the all blessings that are mine and the gifts of your presence, your comfort, your mercy and your strength... Unwrap me, Lord, so that others can know and enjoy my gifts… Unwrap me, Lord, so that nothing hides me from you and your love and the love of those around me… I have Christmas gifts for others, Lord, but it’s your birthday that's coming, so I offer you my unwrapped heart my opened faith, my unsealed trust… Unwrap me, Lord, I need your help, for I cannot unwrap myself… Amen. HOMELESS SHELTER This year as we decorate our homes and churches with lights, keep in mind the real light that illuminates our hearts with love and peace. May the beautiful greenery and flowers that adorn our tables remind us that God comes to transform our own stables into his dwelling place; that Christ is present in even the messiest, sweatiest, most embarrassing and despairing moments of our every day lives; That Emmanuel lifts us out of our poverty to embrace the riches of God.
