Strengthened by the Word of God and nourished by His Sacraments, we step forth in faith to love and serve one another.” Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family It teaches us about Jesus, Mary, and Joseph - and about each one of us and our own families. From antiquity the Christian family has rightly been called a "domestic church." In our life within the Christian family, Jesus Christ is truly present. However, we need the eyes to see Him at work, the ears to hear His instruction and the hearts to make a place for Him to dwell. In our family we can learn the way of selfless love by enrolling in the School of Nazareth. Jesus spent 30 of his 33 earthly years in Nazareth. Some spiritual writers have called these the "hidden years", because there is so little written about them in the Gospel narratives. However, they reveal the holiness of ordinary life and show us how it becomes extraordinary for those baptized into Christ. There comes a difficult time in the life of every parent around the world and it is allowing our children to make their own decisions and follow their own ways. In a country that is not our native home, things can often become even more complicated when our children grow away from the values and traditions we highly treasure. We may have the tendency to be overly protective or go with the flow of the society that surrounds us. The truth is that the line between properly protecting our children and allowing them to live their own life is very thin. We talk a lot today about creating a vocation culture, in other words a religious, family, and social environment in which the calls from God are considered and where the family encourages the children to follow his ways, and later respect and support their decisions. This is not very easy. Nuestra Parroquia Sometimes parents believe they know what is best for their children or understandably want them to triumph and succeed— but according to their own standards. The important thing is to listen carefully and be opened to young people’s most intimate desires and possibilities. Helping them to see what God might be calling them to do, even if it is not exactly what we would have dreamed for them in material terms. It is the same things that Mary and Joseph endured while desperately looking for Jesus in Jerusalem. The response we would wait for and accept from our own children: “I was tending to God’s things.” In other words, I was doing what God wants from me. Only then can they be completely happy, fulfilled and have a full life. Only then can we know that the family has successfully completed what they were entrusted with. For Reflection ~ Do I harbor dreams for my children, but have not confirmed if this is what they want for themselves? So I try to convince them of my vision, even if they express the desire to do something else? Would I respect the vocation to dedicate their life to religious life, priesthood, or lay commitment from any of my children?
