Greetings BDHS Family:
With the fall harvest more than halfway completed and the leaves on the trees
almost departed, there is no doubt that transition is in the air. We are much the
same at BDHS as the first term of the school year comes to a close in the next few
days. The end of the term not only brings closure for our students, but also brings
new opportunities for our students as they move into the final nine weeks of the
two-term semester.
As the fall activities are coming to a close, the excitement of the new winter
season is just beginning. A special thanks to all of our students, coaches, and
advisors for the time they put in this fall. The contributions they make to our
school community are significant, and they have done an outstanding job
representing our school. We would also like to commend our parents for their
support and encouragement towards their children. It takes a great deal of
commitment from our parents to ensure that our students have the support to
focus and excel in these activities. Thank you!
In the spirit of giving thanks in November, our school community also takes time to
celebrate our community members who have served our country selflessly as we
host our annual Veterans-Day Breakfast and Program. Our National Honors
Society students and advisor continue to work diligently so the importance and
significance of this day is not forgotten.

During this month as we reflect on all that we are thankful our district will combine
our efforts across buildings to gather food and items for those less fortunate as we
approach the holiday season. Please stay tuned to announcements and talk with
your children about opportunities they might have to contribute selflessly to these
worthwhile endeavors.
SECURITY
On a final note, I want to thank all of our parents and guardians who took time out
of their busy schedules to participate in our conferences a few weeks ago. The
dialogue you have with teachers is a valuable component to us, so we can
continue working together to support your children in their journey at BDHS. If you
have not already marked your calendars for the next Parent-Teacher Conference
night, please note that the conferences on December 7th is another valuable
opportunity to engage your child’s teachers in open and honest discussions about
their academic progress.
All the best,

SAFETY AND SECURITY
As part of our continued effort to maintain the most safe and secure learning environment for our school community, we frequently
review our practices and seek opportunities to improve.
We would like to remind you that we have successfully implemented a new system to help protect your children—it’s called V-Soft
by Raptor. V-Soft is a product from Raptor Technologies that helps track visitors, students, faculty, contractors and volunteers at our
school, thus providing a safer more monitored environment for the students. It is a product that has been consistently rated among
the top products available for schools and is currently serving more than 12,000 schools and facilities nationwide.
If and when parents, visitors, volunteers, or contractors check-in, they will have to present a valid state-issued ID for entering into the
system. The system has the ability to provide alerts to school administrators and law enforcement on people who may jeopardize the
safety of the school community. Visitors that are deemed safe will have a visitor pass printed automatically by Raptor. In addition to
the safety measures associated with Raptor, it will also providing us with a consistent and accessible log of who is in and out of our
building during the day at all times.
In the case of special events at buildings during the school day or events that take place after the school day, an alternate entry will
provide the needed safety measures as we have before with no ID scanning, so that visitors can enter quickly and efficiently.
Raptor is only scanning the visitor’s name, date of birth, and photo for comparison with a national database of registered-sex offenders
or other alert information the school has deemed pertinent to maintain school safety. Additional visitor data is not gathered, and no
data is shared with any outside company or organization.
We feel certain this will help us keep our campus a little safer, and we ask for your cooperation in presenting your valid state-issued
ID when checking in at Beaver Dam High School. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mark DiStefano (Principal) at [email protected] or 920.885.7313 ext. 2112.
YEARBOOK INFORMATION
The yearbooks from the 2014-2015 school year have been available for pickup since the end of September. There are many that have
not yet been picked up. If you pre-ordered one, please make arrangments with your child to get their yearbook from last year. Extra
copies are available for purchase for $50 on a first come, first served basis.
Orders for the 2015-2016 yearbook are only available through Jostens at this time. Go online to jostens.com or watch for the postcard
from Jostens with ordering information.
The deadline for seniors to submit their portraits for the yearbook is Friday, December 18, 2015. If the photo was done by a professional, many times they will automatically send your photo to the high school, so check with your photographer. Photos can be submitted electronically (email to [email protected], flash drive, CD/DVD) or students may turn in a hard copy wallet-sized photo
with the name clearly printed on the back. Portraits do not have to be done by a professional photographer to be submitted to the
yearbook.
If you have any questions, please contact Oriel Combs, yearbook adviser, at [email protected], or by phone at 885-7520 ext. 2139.

MEET BDHS NEW STAFF MEMEBER
JOSHUA BARNES
I have lived in Beaver Dam for the past 9 years, and I have a wife and 5 kids (including a newborn). For the past 7 years , I have
worked at La Follette High School in Madison as a Special-Education teacher. I am thankful to have the opportunity to work here at
BDHS as a Special-Education teacher!
KIM BRADLEY
My name is Kim Bradley: I’m the new Library Media Center aide at Beaver Dam High School. I’m excited to be here and to be a part
of this great school district. A little bit about me: I graduated from Columbus High School and attended college pursuing a degree in
Early Childhood Education. I currently live in Fall River, WI, with my husband, two daughters, and two dogs! We are an active on
the-go family. I also coach both my daughters’ softball and soccer teams. Again, I am excited to be here and to be working with Mrs.
Loizzo in the Library Media Center.
JENNIFER DUKE
I have been teaching science for 20 years and am really excited to join BDUSD. I love teaching science and try my best to make it
have everyday-life applications for my students. My favorite part is when a student lights up because s/he has just figured out something that was previously a struggle. I live in Oakfield with Ben, my husband of 21 years, and our 3 amazing children, Noah (16),
Joshua (13), and Hannah (11). As a family, we love camping, boating, snowmobiling, and traveling. My husband and I ride motorcycles as well, and we headed out to Sturgis, SD, for the Harley-Davidson Rally on the bike in August.
PATRICIA GARTLAND
I'm Patti Gartland, and I am the new BIC/ISS supervisor at the High School. I am a Beaver Dam native along with my husband Jim.
Together we have 4 children: Libby, Cody, Mya and Luke. I enjoy long walks, a good movie, and weekend plans with my family. I
look forward to joining the BDHS staff.
ABBY GREGORY
Hi, my name is Abby Gregory. I graduated from BDHS in 2009 and am happy to be back in the district. After high school, I attended
UW-Madison and played softball for the UW Badgers. I graduated with a degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and continued my education through the University of Saint Mary's- Minnesota to receive my teaching certification. I recently moved back to Beaver Dam
with my fiancé, and we plan on getting married in June 2016. I will am the assistant varsity coach for volleyball and softball, and I am
looking forward to getting to know all of my new coworkers, students, and athletes throughout the district!
ELLEN HANSON
My name is Ellen Hanson, and this is my first year at Beaver Dam High School. I am teaching Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 this year, and I
look forward to working with the students, parents, faculty and staff at BDHS.
I have been teaching Spanish at IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst, Illinois, for the past five years. I was also a softball coach, assistant
bowling coach, Spanish Club moderator, and Junior-Class moderator during my tenure there. I am very happy to be returning home
to Wisconsin as I grew up just outside of Madison. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Spanish and my Secondary Teaching Certificate
at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Teaching language is my passion, and I truly enjoy working with young people. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our young daughter, cooking, being outside, and spending time with our families in Madison.

JENNIFER TREPTOW
I feel privileged to teach at Beaver Dam High School this year. My eleven years of experience found me teaching at surrounding area
districts in various content areas, but it feels great to teach English at "home" at BDHS. My family and I have lived in Beaver Dam for
ten years, and a vast majority of my free time is spent watching my three children play softball, baseball, basketball, and football. When life does present me with extra time, I enjoy fishing, partaking in water sports, relaxing at my family's home in Northern
Wisconsin, traveling with my husband, Mike, and our five children throughout our amazing country and world, and just spending
time outside doing anything (reading, canoeing, rafting, hiking, running, swimming). I also love learning! My goal as an educator is
to share my passion for learning and exploring with my students by creating an active and safe learning environment to enable them to
develop into knowledgeable, competent, successful citizens, and lifelong learners. I am looking forward to a successful year at Beaver
Dam High School.
COURTNEY WHITE
My name is Courtney White, and I am the Business and Marketing teacher at Beaver Dam High School. I graduated from UWWhitewater in May with a dual licensure in Business and Marketing Education. I am also the FBLA advisor and am excited to begin my
teaching career here at BDHS. I am from Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, a little town above the Illinois border. I look forward to becoming a
part of this community and making a positive impact on my students!
JUNIOR AND PARENT ED UCATION PLANNING GROUP
CONFERENCE
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15
BDHS AUDITORIUM - 6:00 P.M.
Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2017!
You and your 11th grade student are cordially invited to attend a Junior and Parent Education Planing
Group Conference on Monday, February 15. This is not a traditional parent-counselor conference.
This conference will focus on information that relates to your son/daughter’s education, college
and career development. This information will help you and your student to continue planning for
his/her future. Information shared will be general but you will have your child’s specific data in an
individualized folder. Counselors will be available after the presentation to answer questions. Appointment is not necessary to attend this Junior Parent Night.
The conference will begin with an overview of Career Cruising. This is a website that your student
will be using to help them identify their strengths and challenges, and to begin investigating possible colleges or universities they might want to attend. We will then go over the transcript, do a
credit check, and make sure your student is on track for graduation. We will also discuss the importance of rigor in choosing next year’s classes and talk over postsecondary options. This is a
great opportunity to continue those important conversations about your student’s future dreams,
plans and goals.
If you cannot attend the Planning Night on February 15, you may want to schedule an individual daytime meeting with your school counselor starting in late February.
We look forward to meeting with you and your Junior student!

-Student/parent's place of employment
-Civic, fraternal, religious or other organizations that the student/parent may belong
-Local scholarship as announced in the Daily Citizen and WBEV/WXRO
-College(s)/Universities to which the student is applying (most have incoming freshmen scholarships available)
-Military recruiters
There are a number of local donors who give scholarships to graduating BDHS seniors through the BDHS Scholarship Committee and the BD Scholarship Foundation. In early February, this information will be shared with seniors by the high school counselors.

PSAT (Pre-SAT) Test for 11th Grade Students
BDHS test date: Wednesday, October 14
The PSAT Test (or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) will be given to Juniors on Wednesday, October 14. The purpose for taking
this exam is for students to gain experience taking the type of standardized tests used in college admissions. In addition, the score students receive on the PSAT during junior year is used to determine their eligibility for competition in the National Merit Scholarship
Program and other scholarship competitions. The PSAT does not play a role in the college admissions process. For more information on the PSAT test, visit www.collegeboard.com.
ASVAB Test (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for 11th & 12th Graders
BDHS test date: Thursday, November 12
The ASVAB is provided free of charge and is for Juniors and Seniors. It measures those abilities that you have already learned or acquired. It also determines your aptitude or readiness to become proficient in a skill if given the opportunity. The ASVAB Test is appropriate for any student, whether you are considering working or going on for more schooling after graduation. It is especially recommended for students who (1) plan to enter the military service after high school, (2) plan to go to a two-year college, or (3) are
going directly into the labor force after high school. For more information on the ASVAB test, visit http://officialasvab.com.
ASPIRE TEST FOR 9TH AND 10TH GRADE STUDENTS
Test Dates: May 4th and 5th
These tests are designed to aid schools and parents in identifying gaps within a student’s learning as well as identify students in need of
either intervention or additional academic challenges while determining college and career readiness and mapping student growth over
time. The State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is working closely with ACT to ensure that all of the ACT assessments
will test students with the same rigor that our students have been taught with the Common Core State Standards. These tests are all a
part of DPI-mandated changes to district evaluations and are standard in public school districts across the state. If you would like
more information on the tests, check out the ACT Aspire website: http://www.act.org/aap/wisconsin/
aspire.html.
ACCUPLACER or COMPASS/ASSET Test for 11th and 12th Grade Students
The ACCUPLACER test is required for admission to Moraine Park and Fox Valley Technical Colleges. The COMPASS/ASSET test is
required for Madison College. Other technical schools may require other tests, so call the school you are interested in to find out what
test you need to take. Minimum scores on the test are not a requirement for admission. Rather, the results are used to determine the
appropriate placement in such courses as math or English. For more information, see www.collegeboard.com/student/
testing/accuplacer, www.act.org/products/higher-education-act-compass or http://www.act.org/asset/tests/.
