EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Newly Ordained Jesuit Priest
Joins Parish Staff
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
I am happy to announce that the Provincial of the
California Province of the Jesuits has missioned a newly
ordained priest to the St. Francis Xavier Parish staff. Fr.
Erick Berrelleza, S.J. will arrive this first week of
August. He will be with us until the summer of 2016
when he will move on to graduate school to pursue a
doctoral degree. Below is a brief biography of Fr. Erick
that appeared in a Jesuit periodical that highlighted the
28 Jesuits that were ordained to the priesthood this
summer across the United States.
Queridos Feligreses y Amigos,
Fr. Erick Berrelleza, SJ, 32, is a native of Los Angeles.
After his 2001 graduation from high school and a brief time in the
college seminary, Fr. Berrelleza headed to Loyola Marymount
University in Los Angeles, where he came to know the Jesuits. In
his freshman year of college, the United States was attacked on
September 11, an event that had a tremendous influence on his
discernment. The tragic attacks helped challenge Fr. Berrelleza to
think more about his faith and about what he was being called to
do. He threw himself into community service with several nonprofit organizations and began meeting with a Jesuit spiritual
director. In 2005, after graduating from Loyola Marymount with a
bachelor’s degree in philosophy, he joined the Jesuits. As a novice,
Fr. Berrelleza worked with small Christian communities in the
Dominican Republic, traveling to villages that had not seen a priest
or religious in several years. His fluency in Spanish proved
invaluable. Missioned next to the Hochschule für Philosophie in
Munich, he studied political philosophy for two years, adding
German to his language repertoire. When he wasn’t studying, Fr.
Berrelleza was reaching out to Munich’s homeless population and
working with refugees through Jesuit Refugee Service. When he
left Germany, Fr. Berrelleza studied theology at Loyola University
Chicago before being missioned to Bellarmine College Preparatory
in San Jose, California, where he taught religious studies and
coached the cross country and track teams. At the Boston College
School of Theology and Ministry, he earned a Master of Divinity
degree while serving as a deacon at St. Mary–St. Catherine of Siena
Parish in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and serving as the chaplain
of the Boston College cross country and track teams. Fr. Berrelleza
is a member of the board of trustees at Santa Clara University in
California and is an associate trustee of Boston College. After
ordination, he hopes to pursue advanced studies in the sociology of
religion. From 2012 to 2015, Fr. Erick, in preparation for
ordination, studied theology at the Boston College School of
Theology and Ministry and earned a Master of Divinity degree.
Please warmly welcome Fr. Erick to our faith community
and we pray God’s blessings on his priestly ministries.
sacerdocio.

Vocations to the
Consecrated Life!
“Make manifest the gratuitousness of God. Men and women
religious, priests, seminarians, every day, return, make this
journey back towards the gratuitousness with which God has
chosen you. You did not pay an entrance fee to enter the
seminary, to enter religious life. You did not deserve it. If any
religious, priest, seminarian or nun here believes that they
deserve it, raise your hand. Everything was given freely. And
the life of a man or woman religious, a priest, a seminarian that
goes on that path—and now that we are talking, bishops as well
– must go on this path of gratuitousness, to return every day
(and pray): “Lord, today I did this, this was good, I had this
difficulty, all this, but everything comes from you.” Everything
is free. That gratuitousness, we are objects of gratuity of God.”
Las vocaciones a la vida
consagrada!
“Religiosas, religiosos, sacerdotes, seminaristas.

Registration is now available
for the 2015-2016 school
year.
St. Francis uses Catechesis of
the Good Shepherd for the
religious formation for
children ages 3 years old
through 5th Grade.
The Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd is faith formation that
promotes a personal and life
long relationship with our
Lord. Relationships take time
to develop and this is one of
many reasons we encourage
you to enroll your child as
young as three years old.
Registration forms are
available in the front office as
well as on line. Please feel free
to call with any questions you
may have.
EDUCACION RELIGIOSA
Las inscripciones ya están
disponibles para el año
escolar 2015-2016.
San Francisco utiliza la
Catequesis del Buen Pastor
para formación religiosa para
niños 3 años de edad a través
de quinto grado.
La Catequesis del Buen Pastor
es la formación de fe que
promueve una larga relación
personal y la vida con nuestro
Señor. Las relaciones
requieren tiempo para
desarrollarse y esto es una de
las muchas razones por las que
animamos a que inscriba a su
hijo a los tres años de edad.
Los formularios de inscripción
están disponibles en la oficina,
así como en línea. Por favor,
no dude en llamar si tienen
preguntas.

Laudato Si
On the Care of Our Common Home
by Pope Francis
“Don’t be fooled by the headlines. This encyclical is not about
climate change—though the Holy Father accepts the currently
dominant opinion on it. It’s about heart change, an 'integral
ecology' that recognizes that 'We are not God' and proposes
'redefining our notion of progress' and adopting a 'responsible
simplicity of life, in grateful contemplation of God’s world, and in
concern for the needs of the poor and the protection of the
environment'".
