Historical Sketch
In January, 1899, the American Baptist Home Mission Society appointed its first missionary to
Eastern Cuba, Rev. H.R. Moseley. Rev. Mosley had been a missionary for several years to
Mexico, where he acquired command of the Spanish language and became familiar with the type
of Spanish Roman Catholicism. A favorable lot and building, remodeled into a church, were
secured in Santiago, and services soon began. In 1904, A.B. Howell joined the missionary force
and established a strong church in Guantanamo. He later replaced Moseley as superintendent of
missions for Eastern Cuba.
The Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention (Convención Bautista de Cuba Oriental), supported by the
American Baptist Home Mission Society, was formed in 1905 in El Cristo, Santiago, Cuba.
Forty delegates representing 13 churches and missions were present at the organizational
meeting. Officers of the 1905 convention included H.R. Moseley, president; D.A. Wilson, vice
president; Jose Ripoll, secretary; A.B. Howell, treasurer. By 1954, the ECBC claimed 82 Cuban
Baptist churches, 43 Haitian Baptist churches, 140 served missions, and 6,753 members.
Scope and Content Note
The Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention Collection consists of three document boxes of material
divided into two series – biographical files and subject files. Materials in the collection are
entirely in Spanish.
3
The biographical files include more than 140 files on Baptist pastors, denominational workers,
and seminary employees of the Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention. Most of these files date to the
mid to late 20th century and contain information on individuals’ educational training and
churches served. Some files contain additional narrative biographical descriptions, clippings,
bulletins, and photographs.
The subject files series includes files on many, but not all, of the annual meeting proceedings of
the Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention. Some annual meeting files include proceedings and
reports, while others contain news stories from El Mensaiero (The Messenger) on the annual
meetings. Scattered issues of the El Mensaiero publication from 1906 – 1913 are also included,
along with a file of correspondence and another of information on the State Hispanic Fellowship
of the Florida Baptist Convention.
Arrangement
The collection is divided into two series – biographical files and subject files. Materials in each
series are arranged in alphabetical order.
