n Air Europa seguimos creciendo, aunque no por eso
descuidamos mejorar cada día
lo que ya tenemos. En diciembre comenzaremos a volar dos
veces por semana entre Madrid y Asunción, la capital de Paraguay,
y estamos contando ya los días para que
comiencen a llegar los nuevos Boeing 787
Dreamliner. Será a partir de la próxima
primavera y le aseguro que la experiencia
de volar en ellos es única.
Mientras tanto, estamos preparando
muchas mejoras para que nuestros pasajeros se sientan plenamente satisfechos
de viajar con una compañía moderna y
cien por cien española.
La primera de estas mejoras se centra en
la ﬂota de larga distancia. A principios
del próximo año comenzaremos a instalar, de la mano de Panasonic, la mejor
conexión de WiFi a bordo disponible en
la actualidad. Al mismo tiempo, remodelaremos la cabina de Business en tres de
los Airbus 330 para dotarlos de asientos
convertibles en cama.
En otro orden de cosas, es un placer informarle de que, antes de ﬁnales de este año,
Air Europa dispondrá de su propia tarjeta de ﬁdelización, con la que el pasajero
podrá acumular millas que le permitirán
obtener importantes ventajas, tanto en las
compañías de la alianza SkyTeam, como
en otras empresas de diferentes sectores.
El mes próximo les daré más detalles. Por
ahora, simplemente les avanzo el nombre de la tarjeta: Suma.

La Meca se desborda con el Hajj

debe cumplir: la
profesión de fe, la
oración cinco veces
al día, el ayuno en el
Ramadán, la limosna y el Hajj
o peregrinación a La Meca, que
todo creyente debe realizar una
vez en la vida si está capacitado y
dispone de medios. Este último
convierte a esta ciudad de Arabia
Saudí durante el duodécimo
mes del calendario lunar en un
hervidero de ﬁeles. Este año,
entre el 21 y el 26 de septiembre,
un millón y medio de
musulmanes de blanco riguroso
acudirán a una celebración cuyo
epicentro es la Gran Mezquita
de Masjid al Haram, en cuyo
patio central está la Kaaba. El
ritual más famoso consiste en
dar siete vueltas en sentido
contrario a las agujas del reloj
en torno a la Kaaba, besando y
tocando al inicio de cada una la
Piedra Negra, un meteorito que
está en una de sus esquinas y que
los musulmanes consideran un
pedazo desgajado del paraíso.
Toda una marea humana que

Pero en la consagración de este actor de
56 años no ha habido milagros, sino 30
años de trabajo. Autodidacta, asegura
que llegó a la interpretación «jugando
a ser otro», y se curtió en el teatro y la
televisión. Ha sido bendecido con un
Emmy por su trabajo en Televisión por
la inclusión, pero fue su papel en Hable
con ella el que lo catapultó. Después
vinieron los multipremiados Relatos
salvajes. Y en el la recámara tiene la
última de Almodóvar, Silencio, que acaba

else,» and he cut his teeth treading the
boards in theater and on television. He
was blessed with an Emmy for is work
in Argentine drama Televisión por la

multi-award winning Wild Tales. Also in
the can is Silence, Pedro Almodóvar’s

The Brothers Muñoz, the most famous pair to
come out of Cornellá (Barcelona) have a new
album, Rumbo a lo desconocido (‘Bound for
the Unknown’). The album bears all the duo’s
hallmarks, with rumba, rakish lyrics and plenty
of (good) humor. And what would David and
José Muñoz take with them on a journey into
the unknown? «Underpants and socks,» says
the former. «Me? Heaps of t-shirts; they’re
our tuxedos!» José responds. And pills, «and
not just for sleeping,» explains David, riffing
on the title of their ﬁrst single Biodramina,
paracetamol, alguna valeriana. David is a large
suitcase man; his brother prefers a small one,
«although I’m one of those people who has
to sit on it to close it,» he explains. Today
José carries David like a backpack. «But other
times, it’s the other way round. We’re like
a cycling team, one day one of us does the
hard work and on another day the other,» says
David. And his brother agrees.

con el título del primer single, Biodramina,
paracetamol, alguna valeriana. David es de
maleta grande; su hermano, de pequeña,
«aunque luego soy de los que se tienen que
sentar encima para cerrarla», explica. Hoy es
David quien carga a José como una mochila.
«Pero otras veces es al revés. Somos como
un equipo de ciclismo: nos vamos haciendo
relevos, un día tira uno y otro día tira el otro»,
dice David. Y su hermano asiente.

sin fondo. Y cuando está tan oscuro, todo lo demás empieza a brillar», asegura Ai Weiwei. Y es con esa intensidad, la
de la represión y la falta de libertad sufrida en carne propia, con la que brilla la obra del contestatario artista chino, que ha pasado cinco años retenido en su país. La Royal
Academy of Arts de Londres recopila –a partir del 19 de
septiembre– una retrospectiva comisariada en colaboración con el propio creador desde su estudio en Beijing. En
ella se repasa su trabajo desde 1993. Las obras elegidas exploran, con audacia y basándose en su propia experiencia,
una multitud de temas desaﬁantes, como la libertad creativa, la censura y los derechos humanos, así como un análisis de la sociedad china. Si no puede desplazarse hasta
Londres, el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga
ofrece otra oportunidad de acercarse a su obra de Ai Weiwei. Desde el 18 de septiembre acoge la exposición Circle

his work shines. From September 19 the Royal Academy
of Arts in London hosts a retrospective commissioned in
collaboration with the creator from his studio in Beijing.
The exhibition looks at his work since 1993. Drawing on
his own experience, the works chosen boldly explore a
multitude of challenging themes including creative freedom, censorship and human rights, as well as examining
Chinese society. If you can’t make it to London, the Centre
for Contemporary Art in Malaga oﬀers an opportunity to
get up close with his work. From September 18 it hosts the
exposition Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads.

En realidad sonrío mucho», dice Kristen Stewart a sus 25 años y con dos
películas pendientes de estrenar: Equals, que se estrena en el Festival de
Venecia, y American Ultra, que llega el día 11 a España. «Me gustaría que la
gente pensara que molo mucho», insiste, quizá para dejar deﬁnitivamente
atrás su fama de rarita y antipática, o de ser una persona demasiado tímida
y que nunca se ha sentido cómoda cuando es el foco de atención.
Y es que todo ha ido muy rápido para Kristen. A los ocho años fue descubierta por su agente en una función escolar. «Es extraño, porque yo era la última
persona que hubieras imaginado en una obra», recuerda. Un año después,
debutaba en una película de Disney para la televisión y a los 12 le llegó su
primer papel importante, como la hija de Jodie Foster en La habitación del
pánico. A partir de ahí se fueron sucediendo las películas hasta que a los 17
fue elegida para protagonizar la adaptación al cine de la saga Crepúsculo.
«De los 15 a los 20 años fue muy intenso. Estaba siempre ansiosa. Si no sabía cómo iba a salir algo, me ponía enferma, me encerraba dentro de mí

“La Diabetes se opera
con BAGUA a medida”
La Diabetes se opera, se pueden operar todos los tipos de Diabetes
y, además, se pueden operar pacientes con peso normal. Son noticias nuevas para la mayoría de la población incluyendo muchos
médicos que aún creen que la Diabetes sólo tiene tratamiento con
comprimidos e insulina.
¿Qué diferencia hay entre la Diabetes Tipo 2
y la Diabetes Tipo 1?
Se diferencian en el mecanismo de destrucción del
páncreas. La Tipo1 es una enfermedad en la que las
defensas del paciente no reconocen a las células que
producen la insulina en el páncreas y las destruyen.
Por eso aparece a edades más tempranas, en los niños,
y destruye el páncreas antes. Y por eso los pacientes
tienen insulina desde el principio. Mientras que la
Tipo2 está relacionada con una dificultad para que
la glucosa (azúcar) entre en las células ayudada por
la insulina. Por eso se queda en la sangre y es cuando
decimos que el azúcar está alto. Claro, el páncreas
nota que la glucosa está alta y no para de producir
insulina. Este trabajo constante del páncreas lo va
agotando progresivamente, de ahí que los pacientes
empiecen con pastillas y terminen con insulina,
como pasa en los Tipo1 pero con mayor edad.
Es decir, distinto mecanismo de producción pero el
mismo resultado. Por eso, si la cirugía tiene un efecto
positivo sobre una, también lo debe tener sobre la
otra. Los dos tipos se tratan con los mismos medicamentos y producen las mismas complicaciones a
largo plazo en corazón, ojos, riñones, nervios, piernas,
etc. La Tipo2 la tienen el 95% de los diabéticos.
Si sólo es cuestión de bajar los niveles de azúcar
en sangre y tenemos pastillas e insulina para
hacerlo, ¿por qué se desarrollan las complicaciones: infarto, ceguera, diálisis, amputaciones,
etc. cuando se trata con pastillas e insulina y
no cuando se trata con cirugía?
El efecto de la cirugía sobre la Diabetes fue un hallazgo casual. Haciendo una cirugía para curar otras
enfermedades como la úlcera de estómago o la obesidad nos dimos cuenta de que cuando se hacía en
diabéticos, la Diabetes desaparecía. Con el tiempo
hemos visto que, además, mejoran las consecuencias
de la Diabetes como cardiopatía, retinopatía, neuropatía, nefropatía y otras vasculopatías como la impotencia sexual y la periférica en las piernas. Aparte,
del colesterol, los triglicéridos, la tensión arterial alta,
el ácido úrico, etc. Y este efecto no lo tienen ni los antidiabéticos orales ni la insulina (por eso los diabéticos
tienen que tomar también pastillas para tratar todas
estas otras enfermedades que se presentan de forma
conjunta con la Diabetes).
Es decir, la cirugía que hace que la comida no pase
por la mayor parte del estómago y la primera porción
del intestino provoca unos cambios en la absorción
y metabolismo del azúcar que evita los efectos que
este azúcar provoca cuando el estómago está entero
y pasa por todo el intestino. Es otro ritmo de absorción
y distribución del azúcar por el organismo. Este cambio de absorción y distribución del azúcar en el organismo hace que reviertan los cambios que el metabolismo (procesamiento) del azúcar en los
diabéticos produce sobre los tejidos muscular, graso,
hígado, riñón, etc. Y el paciente vuelve a tener una
forma de comer de todo y una salud más parecida a
la de las personas no diabéticas.
Sorprende que esta cirugía no sea más conocida
y se practique más. ¿Por qué cree que no se conoce tanto y no se realiza a más diabéticos?
Es algo nuevo y todo lleva su tiempo hasta que se conoce por el gran público y se confirman los resultados
en gran número de pacientes por distintos grupos
de cirujanos en estudios amplios. Hoy día es una realidad a nivel mundial. En Septiembre de 2015 se celebrará en Londres el III Congreso Mundial de Cirugía de Diabetes. Y se están dando cada vez más pasos
para afianzar la cirugía con Bypass Gástrico a medida
que nosotros realizamos (BAGUA) o de bypass metabólico en general como tratamiento de la Diabetes.
Tanto en pacientes con mal control de su Diabetes,
como en cualquier diabético. Y cuanto antes mejor
para evitar el deterioro del páncreas.
¿El BAGUA a medida qué es exactamente? ¿Es
una cirugía muy traumática?
BAGUA consiste en dividir el estómago en dos partes:
por una pasa la comida y por otra no, aunque la parte
por la que no pasa la comida sigue funcionando igual
y produciendo los mismos jugos y sustancias que antes de la cirugía. La parte del estómago por la que
pasa la comida se une al intestino. Es a medida porque
dependiendo del peso, de la edad y de la longitud
total del intestino de cada paciente, se realiza el tamaño del estómago y la longitud del intestino que
se puentea (bypass significa puenteo, como aparece
en la figura). Se realiza a través de cuatro pequeños
agujeros para introducir como cuatro bolígrafos, y
el paciente está cuarenta y ocho horas en el hospital.
El índice de complicaciones está entorno al uno por
ciento.

¿Cuánto tiempo lleva haciendo esta Cirugía
de Diabetes tanto en pacientes con peso normal como en pacientes con sobrepeso u obesidad, y cómo son los resultados?
Con intención expresa de tratar Diabetes en pacientes
no obesos empezamos en Febrero de 2008, aunque
desde 2002 venimos operando a pacientes obesos que
además tenían Diabetes, aunque eso es Cirugía de
Obesidad. Se habla de Cirugía de Diabetes cuando se
opera a pacientes sin obesidad con la sola intención
de resolver su Diabetes.
En la Diabetes Tipo 2 más del ochenta por ciento de
los pacientes dejan totalmente el tratamiento no sólo
de pastillas e insulina sino también el resto de pastillas para tensión, colesterol o triglicéridos, ácido úrico,
anti-agregantes (adiro) para el corazón, etc. que normalmente tiene este tipo de pacientes, haciendo además una dieta libre. El otro menos del veinte por
ciento pasa de necesitar insulina a una pastilla al día
para controlar sus niveles de azúcar con dieta libre.
En la Diabetes Tipo 1 los pacientes dejan de necesitar
insulina rápida y dejan o disminuyen el resto del
tratamiento para hipertensión, colesterol, etc. y se
controlan los niveles de azúcar con una sola inyección
de cantidades mínimas (en comparación con lo que
necesitaba antes de la cirugía) de insulina lenta.
En ambos casos (Tipo 2 y 1) mejoran o remiten las
complicaciones macro- y micro-vasculares de la diabetes sobre corazón, ojos, riñón, piernas, etc.

Corría el año 910. Atrás quedaba el esplendor de Carlomagno, el rey que quiso
resucitar el Imperio romano, y otro largo
periodo de decadencia volvía a abatirse
sobre aquella Europa fragmentada en
pequeños reinos y feudos que vivían de
espaldas entre sí. Fue entonces cuando
Guillermo el Piadoso, duque de Aquitania, decidió entregar una parcela de
tierra a un monje benedictino para que
levantara un modesto monasterio en el
condado de Macon, ducado de Borgoña.
Apenas dos siglos después, más de 1 500
monasterios europeos dependían directamente de la casa madre de Cluny.
La estructura centralizada de la orden,
unida a su independencia de los poderes
locales y al prestigio adquirido por sus
abades, se tradujo en una enorme prosperidad material y cultural. Transformada en organización supranacional, ejerció una importante inﬂuencia —no solo
religiosa, sino también económica, social
y política— en Francia, Inglaterra, Italia,

Ministerio de Hacienda, la centralización de estos viajes en un
único contrato permitirá a las arcas públicas reducir en 25,6
millones cada año los gastos de la Administración en viajes

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented a security programme
denominated “Secure Flight” which is compulsory under the authority of 49 U.S.C.
section 114, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and 49
C.F.R parts 1540 and 1560. Which requires all airlines operating to the US to provide
the US Government the following information from their passengers: full name, date
of birth, gender and passport information. This regulations also applies to passengers
on ﬂights overﬂying US airspace. In case the required information is not provided,
may result in denial of transport or denial of authority to enter the boarding area. If

piragüismo vuelca parte de su energía. / He loves sport, but loves «the adrenaline of competition
even more,» he says. And in canoeing he invests a great portion of his energy. By JORGE FABIÁN
«I began canoeing in 1988. A friend’s brother
gave us a course… and here I am still. I was 13
or 14 and, apart from two years when I lived in
Holland, I haven’t stopped.» And practice has
brought him success. In July he won 5 gold
medals at the World Masters (for over-35s)
and another at the Spanish Championships, in
the K4 200 meter category. But Capdevila is
not just a committed canoeist; he’s a member
of the Real Club Náutico de Palma Executive
Committee and responsible for the canoeing
competition team, and vice president of the
Balearic Canoe Federation, where he works
to «promote the sport at grass roots level as
much as the top-level competition.» He is also
convinced that sport «is a tool to improve the
life of disadvantaged people or people from
dysfunctional families.» And, with the help of
the La Caixa Foundation, he dedicates a great
deal of his time to the club. «An activity,» he
assures us, «as gratifying as any gold medal.»

«Empecé en el kayak en 1988. El hermano
de un amigo nos dio un curso… ¡y hasta hoy!
Tenía 13 o 14 años y, salvo dos años que viví
en Holanda, no he dejado de practicar». Y
la práctica le ha llevado al éxito. En julio, sin
ir más lejos, a colgarse cinco medallas en el
Mundial Máster (para mayores de 35 años),
y otra más en el Campeonato de España
Absoluto, en K4 200 metros. Pero Capdevila
no es solo un consumado palista: es vocal de
Real Club Náutico de Palma y vicepresidente
de la Federación Balear de Piragüismo, donde
trabaja «para promocionar tanto el deporte
base como el piragüismo de competición al
máximo nivel». También es un convencido
de que el deporte es «una herramienta que
mejora la vida de la gente con discapacidad o
que viene de familias desestructuradas». Y a
eso, con la ayuda de la Obra Social La Caixa,
dedica parte de su tiempo en su club. «Una
actividad –asegura– tan gratiﬁcante como
colgarse un oro».
