La temática del tercer Taller Global de Investigación del 2015
The theme of Dejusticia’s third annual Global Action-Research
es Transiciones Constitucionales, Justicia Transicional y Derechos
Humanos en el Sur Global. Para este encuentro, Dejusticia convocó
y seleccionó jóvenes profesionales del Sur Global involucrados en
investigación, abogacía y activismo sobre este tema.
Workshop in 2015 is Constitutional Transitions, Transitional Justice,
and Human Rights in the Global South. For this workshop, Dejusticia
invited young professionals from the Global South who are engaged
in human rights advocacy around constitutional transitions and/or
transitional justice.
El tercer Taller anual se realiza la tercera semana de agosto del 2015
en Bogotá, la costa Caribe y Cartagena, y combinará talleres intensivos
académicos y de escritura con aprendizaje vivencial.
El Taller Global de Investigación-Acción de Dejusticia busca asegurar
que la nueva generación de defensores de derechos humanos del Sur
Global tenga una participación fuerte en discusiones internacionales.
Un reto importante para estos jóvenes defensores es cómo
incrementar su influencia en los debates de derechos humanos.
Es sumamente importante que haya investigación de alta calidad
que provenga del Sur Global. Tomando esto en cuenta, y además
reconociendo la necesidad de que los y las defensores y defensoras
jóvenes puedan mejorar su capacidad de investigación y escritura
para resolver problemas inmediatos en sus respectivos países,
Dejusticia dirige su Taller Global de Investigación-Acción hacia estos
jóvenes. Los objetivos son entrenar a estos jóvenes profesionales en
diseñar, realizar y escribir su investigación orientada hacia la acción y
comunicar sus resultados en diversos formatos. Dejusticia ofrece un
seguimiento por parte de un mentor a los y las participantes para que
trabajen sobre un proyecto de investigación y publicación diseñado
por ellos cuando regresen a sus países de origen.
The third annual Workshop takes place the third week of August
2015 in Bogota, the Colombian Caribbean Coast, and Cartagena,
combining intensive writing and academic workshops with
experiential learning.
Dejusticia’s Global Action-Research Workshop seeks to ensure that
the new generation of Global South human rights advocates has a
strong voice in international discussions. An important challenge
for these young advocates is how to increase their influence in
international human rights debates. High quality research coming
from the Global South on human rights issues is critically important.
In recognition of this, and of the need for young advocates to build
research and writing skills to address pressing problems in their
respective countries, Dejusticia holds an annual Action-Research
Workshop directed at young advocates. The objectives are to train
these young professionals to effectively design, conduct, and write
action-oriented research, as well as communicate their findings
in diverse forms. Dejusticia provides ongoing mentorship for
participants to work on a research project and publication of their
design after they return to their home countries.

Bayo currently works
with the Centre for
Human Rights based in
Pretoria, South Africa. As
a lawyer, his passion is
poured into defending
the ordinary citizen
from human rights
abuses. His professional experience
cuts across organizations such as
Global Rights, Commonwealth Human
Rights Initiative, Social and Economic
Rights Action Centre (SERAC), amongst
others.
He has carried his campaign for a
greater respect for the dignity of the
human person right up to the African
Commission where he canvassed
socio-economic rights. Bayo was one
out of five Africans that were selected
for the Amnesty International’s Human
Rights Defenders programme in 2011.
He is at the moment undergoing
his LL.D. but holds an LL.M. from the
University of Pretoria and is also an
alumnus of the International Institute
of Human Rights, France.

Currently she coordinates the area

As the Program Advisor
of the Transitional Justice Program at the
Kenya Human Rights Commission, Faith
works with marginalized populations
and networks of victims/survivors of
past atrocities like war veterans and
internally displaced persons to support
them to define, claim, and defend their
rights. She also works on advocacy
around land governance and equitable
benefit sharing issues. She has previously
worked with the Coalition on Violence
against Women and the Federation of
Women Lawyers (FIDA Kenya), where she
spearheaded advocacy actions around
the implementation of the agenda four
component of the NARA agreement,
a long-term reform Transitional Justice
intervention of multi sectoral institutions
under the Serena agreement after the
2007/2008 post-election violence in
Kenya.
Faith holds an MA in project management

University of Nairobi. She is also an

As the Programs Director of ECRF,
Hussein works on various human
rights and democratization programs,
using a new approach that is based
on community engagement and
mobilization. He has led research
and advocacy efforts on housing
and minorities rights, in addition to
efforts aimed at combating torture
and forced disappearances, as well
as strengthening the rule of law. He
is currently working on advocacy
for more participatory and inclusive
politics in Egypt by focusing on
democratization.

Johanna has about 10 years of
experience of working in the
development sector and has served
as a program manager for projects
located across four states in India. Her
work has advocated social change
through the use of law, with a focus
on human rights issues and making
access to justice a reality for the
most vulnerable groups. Her core
experience of working in post-conflict
situations has included supporting
survivors of mass violence in availing
their legal rights, advocating for
policies for support and rehabilitation
of conflict-induced internally displaced
persons, and working with victims of
sexual assault during conflict.

Colombia’s RCN Noticias. He is also cofounder and editor-in-chief of M’Sur.
He currently works for The Arab
Network for Human Rights Information
(ANHRI) as a researcher and Head of the
International Relations Unit. Over the
past year, he took part in several research
projects on issues related to freedom
of expression, digital rights, transitional

working on a research project that issues

Andrew is a lawyer by training
and is a human rights advocate
with considerable experience
in the areas of legal research;
policy formulation and analysis;
international advocacy; and civic
education. He is the program
manager of the transformative
justice thematic line at the Kenya
Human Rights Commission (KHRC).
His thematic focus areas include Forced Migration
(Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons); Land
Rights; Transitional Justice; and Minority and

decision emanating from the African Commission

Douglas is the Director of the
Carr Center for Human Rights Policy
at the Harvard Kennedy School
and a Lecturer in Public Policy. He
became the first Executive Director
of the Center for Victims of Torture
(CVT) in 1988 and stepped down
on January 31, 2012, after nearly
24 years heading the organization.
During his tenure, CVT provided
healing services to over 23,000 torture survivors in one
of its clinical sites in Minnesota, Guinea, Sierra Leone,
Liberia, Jordan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
or Kenya.
Almost a decade earlier Douglas cut his teeth on global
NGO formation when he launched the Nestle Boycott

Douglas also led the Campaign to Ban Torture, which
pulled together a partnership with the National
Religious Coalition for Human Rights and Evangelicals
for Human Rights and was joined by 125 national
security experts and 125 national religious leaders.
The Campaign developed an executive order to
ban torture which was used as a model for President
Obama’s executive order outlawing torture on his
second day in office.
Johnson received a Master’s in Public and Private
Management from the Yale School of Organization

relations. He is currently a professor of

is also the Regional Coordinator for
the Southeast Asian Conflict Studies

Prosecutions are Changing World Politics

Kathryn is the principal investigator for two
National Science Foundation (NSF) grants
to develop a database on transitional justice
mechanisms in order to explore the scope
and effectiveness of prosecutions, truth
commissions, reparations, amnesty laws,
lustrations and traditional forms of justice.
Kathryn has been a Fulbright Scholar in
Argentina and a Guggenheim fellow. She
is a member of the American Philosophical
Society, the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences and the Council on Foreign
Relations. She holds an MA and Ph.D. from
Columbia University.

apoyan el trabajo con jóvenes en
diferentes actividades como la Escuela de
Ciudadanía. Asimismo, ha sido capacitado
en resolución de conflictos y construcción
de paz, desarrollo comunitario y
agricultura campesina. Actualmente, está
interesado en adquirir más conocimientos
sobre justicia transicional, medio
ambiente y economías campesinas que
puedan generar una propuesta de paz
que incluya la permanencia digna en el
territorio.
