R
afael Ferreras never
considered himself one of “the
cool kids.”
He felt like he was always playing catch up.
Now everyone is trying to keep up with him.
Ferreras’ latest work, Politics, is having its
New York debut at the Joyce Theater in late
October. The dance piece, choreographed
by Ferreras and performed by the Ballet
Memphis, has gotten rave reviews.
The professional dancer has performed
and trained for most of his life – for over two
decades.
His latest piece
mixes ballet dancers
with jookers, or

hip-hop
performers, set to the
music of Bach. It’s
about the politics of work—something that
Ferreras struggled with when creating the
dance.
“I didn’t want to make it seem like it was
hip-hop and ballet dancers battling it out—
like West Side Story,” he said. “It’s an office
setting—where everyone is working toward
the same goal—but there’s tension because of
the differences.”
Choreographing
it
was
politically
challenging, too.
At first there was tension between the two
groups. They didn’t mingle and Ferreras ended
up having separate rehearsals. Ballerinas
expect to take direction from choreographers.
But hip-hop dancers aren’t used to being told
what to do. They’re more improvisational and
freestyle. They feel and listen to the music
differently than ballet dancers.
“I thought I was going to choreograph
everything,” he said. “But I couldn’t.”
Instead he acted more like a director. He’d
see something he liked and put it in certain
places to fill out the pieces of music. He
created patterns on stage and made parallels
with the ballerina’s choreography. “Then it
became fun,” he said.
Ferreras was born
in the Bronx, but his
family moved to the
Dominican Republic
soon after. He lived
in the northern town
of Tenares. He and his extended family
worked on a cacao farm. At age nine, he was
getting up early, walking out to the trees to
harvest chocolate. When he was 11, he’d
carry large burlap sacks of cacao beans to the
farm on his back.
By the time he was a young teen, he moved
back and settled in Washington Heights.
In the Dominican Republic, he had been
inspired by Bruce Lee films. He wanted to

study martial arts—and be able to jump high
in the air, stay suspended for a moment and
brandish a side kick that would wipe out an
army of enemies.
“It was a very visceral kind of physical
expression—screaming with your body,” he
said.
But when Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theater performed at IS 164 Stitt Jr High
School, everything came into focus. “I
thought it was the most amazing thing in the
world,” he said. “After that I knew I wanted
to be an artist.”
Ferreras was 14 at the time—an age when
many aspiring dancers have already had years
of training. He decided to go to the High
School for Performing Arts—which required
an audition. He couldn’t dance, act or play an
instrument. Instead, he submitted drawings.
“Little did I know that you’d have to do 10
pieces of actual art work. I took 10 pieces of
paper and drew pictures on all of them. People
were there with paintings and sculptures. I
was so intimidated,” he said. “But somehow
I still got accepted.”

W
hen her son reported that he
was being bullied in school,
Griselda De León didn’t hesitate to
speak up and address the problem.
But, when she met with teachers and the
parents of the children involved, she couldn’t
understand much of what was being said.
De León does not speak much English
and those who met with her spoke even less
Spanish.
“It was so hard to seek help for my son,” said
the native of El Salvador and mother of two
children at P.S. 279 in the Bronx.
For parents and guardians like De Leon, for
whom English is not a primary language, the
lack of fluency and communication can present a
barrier to participation in their children’s school
life. Unable to be part of the conversation,
many parents, particularly immigrants, can feel
disempowered and disconnected.
De Leon joined with similarly concerned
parents, Public Advocate Letitia “Tish” James,
Councilmember Mark Levine, and members of
the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC)
at the steps of City Hall on Thurs., Oct. 1st to
demand a restructuring of the Department of
Education (DOE) that would provide a school

The Education Collaborative of NYIC
called on the DOE specifically to create
a Borough Field Support Center in each
borough, where a language access
coordinator would distinguish
schools that need support on

Organizers noted that nearly half of all
public school students – almost half a million
families – speak a language other than English
at home.
Lack of language assistance serves to
disinhibit parental involvement in school
affairs, said advocates, and
that was detrimental to the
development of a strong
school
community
and
sustained parent engagement.
They pointed to research in
which parental involvement is positively
correlated with better grades and higher
academic achievement.
Equal opportunity is
fundamental for upward
mobility, argued James, and
language should present no
barrier to student success.
She called for immediate,
quality language access for
all parents that would level
the playing field.
“Parental
engagement
is key to the success of
all children. It is all about
access and equal opportunity
for all,” said James. “If the
role is to empower parents,
we need to empower all
parents.”

how discouraging it was
for immigrant parents, such
as his mother, to even set
foot in school. He recalled
how lost she felt to not have
anyone there that could understand her.
“We need to properly engage the immigrant
community,” he said.
Councilmember Mark Levine issued his
introductory remarks in Hebrew, seeking
to illustrate how alienating it could be
to not understand words meant for all.
He called on the DOE to better address
the growing need for language services.
“You need infrastructure,” he insisted.
“You need people whose full-time job is to
coordinate this effort.”

uando su hijo le informó que estaba
siendo intimidado en la escuela,
Griselda de León no dudó en hablar y
abordar el problema.
Pero cuando se encontró con los maestros y
los padres de los niños involucrados, no podía
entender mucho de lo que decían.
De León no habla mucho inglés y los que se
reunieron con ella hablaban mucho menos español.
“Fue muy difícil buscar ayuda para mi hijo”, dijo
la nativa de El Salvador y madre de dos niños de la
PS 279 en el Bronx.
Para los padres y tutores como de León, para
quienes el inglés no es su lengua principal, la
falta de fluidez y comunicación puede representar
una barrera para la participación en la vida
escolar de sus hijos. Incapaces de ser parte de
la conversación, muchos padres, especialmente
los inmigrantes, pueden sentirse impotentes y
desconectados.

Youth blood drive coordinators
needed Dec. 15 through Jan. 15
This winter, high school and college
students can help save lives and be eligible
to win a scholarship of up to $2,500 by
hosting an American Red Cross blood drive.
Registration is now open through Nov. 15 to
host drives between Dec. 15, 2015, and Jan.
15, 2016.
“Winter is a difficult time to collect enough
blood to meet patient needs with inclement
weather and seasonal illnesses reducing the
number of volunteer donors,” said Red Cross
spokesperson Colin Riccobon. “Our Leaders
Save Lives program gives students an opportunity
to learn valuable leadership skills and help ensure
blood is available for patients in need.”
The Leaders Save Lives program
encourages community-minded high school
and college students to host blood drives to
help maintain the blood supply around the
winter holidays. Blood donations made at
high school, university and college blood
drives account for as much as 20 percent
of blood donations through the Red Cross.
Around the winter holidays, when school is
not in session, blood donations often decline.
Students who host a drive can be eligible
to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher
education and earn a gift card. A total of six
scholarships will be awarded to students
who host a blood drive collecting 25 blood
donations or more. All students who collect
at least 25 pints at their blood drive will
receive a gift card to giftcertificates.com.

Last year The Hip Hop Nutcracker
was an experiment – how would audiences
respond to hip hop dance being performed to
Tchaikovsky’s famous score? But after 5,000
audience members attended two shows at
the United Palace in Washington Heights and
two sold out shows at New Jersey Performing
Arts Center, it was clear that the metropolitan
area had another hit holiday show on its
hands. On November 20 and 21 “The Hip Hop
Nutcracker” returns to the United Palace
(4140 Broadway at 175th Street) to kick off a
12-city tour, including Miami, Atlanta, St. Paul,
Charleston, Charlotte, and Moscow, Russia.

T
he eleven took on nine.
Earlier this month, a group of 11 mural
artists took to nine different public sites in
East Harlem and the South Bronx to give
them color, meaning and new life.
The second installment of the MonumentArt
project, a mural festival, was announced on
October 5th by City Council Speaker Melissa
Mark-Viverito and partner organizations.
The festival brought internationally
renowned artists to New York to paint largescale murals throughout the urban landscape,
on the sides of residential buildings and
schools uptown.
“These artists are giving an incredible gift
to our community and we couldn’t be more
grateful,” said Mark-Viverito. “I am a big
believer in the arts and preserving the cultural
legacy of our neighborhood.”
The artists hailed from Puerto Rico,
Mexico, South Africa and Belgium, among
other countries. The previous festival
installment took place in 2013 in East Harlem,
and the project has been expanded to include
the South Bronx this year.

just a day before beginning their murals, adding
to the intensity of the experience.

including the Acacia Network, which provided
logistical and financial support.

A principios de este mes, un grupo de 11
artistas de murales tomaron nueve sitios públicos
diferentes en East Harlem y el sur del Bronx para
darles color, significado y una nueva vida.
La segunda entrega del proyecto MonumentArt,
un festival mural, fue anunciada el 5 de octubre

El festival trajo a artistas de renombre
internacional a Nueva York para pintar murales

overnor Andrew Cuomo and
Mayor Bill de Blasio have
agreed to a deal that will keep
a $26.1 billion capital plan for
the Metropolitan Transportation
Authority (MTA) from derailing.
In the agreement reached on October 10,
the state will contribute $8.3 billion, while
New York City will pay $2.5 billion to fuel
the five-year capital plan to help maintain,
repair and expand the nation’s largest mass
transit system.
It marks the largest investment in MTA
infrastructure in history.
The deal follows weeks of public
squabbling between the governor and mayor,
as Cuomo chided the city for not kicking in
more money, while de Blasio accused Albany
of diverting MTA funds to other projects.
Both sides appear to have compromised.
The $2.5 billion the city will contribute to the
deal is nearly four times greater than the $657
million that de Blasio initially offered. Also,
the agreement stipulates that neither side
can “divert any funds or fail to provide any
funding committed.”

make the system smarter and more resilient,
facilitating major upgrades, expansions and

According to the agreement, transit
projects in New York City will be planned in
collaboration with city officials on the MTA’s
board, in exchange for the city paying an
increased portion of the funding.
“Our transit system is the backbone of
New York City’s, and our entire region’s,
economy,” de Blasio stated. “I look forward
to continuing to partner with the Governor
and the MTA to ensure a transit system that
reliably, effectively and safely serves all of its
riders.” The deal should help the MTA avoid further
delays on major capital projects, such as the
Second Avenue subway line.
It also includes funding for increased Select
Bus Service and a Metro-North expansion in
the East Bronx that would put rail stations
in Co-op City, Morris Park, Parkchester/Van
Nest and Hunts Point.
Still unclear is how the state will raise the
funds for its share, as Cuomo and Republican
Majority Leader John Flanagan have stated
that they would not support raising taxes to
fund the deal. Cuomo suggested previously
that the money could come from elsewhere in
the state general budget.
The city indicated it will not raise taxes to
pay for its share of the plan.
Recent tension between Cuomo and de
Blasio over funding the capital plan had also
enveloped Transport Workers Union (TWU)
Local 100, which launched an ad campaign
slamming de Blasio for his reluctance to
provide the MTA with more money.
The union praised the October 10 pact.
“This is obviously a great win for
the thousands of transit workers whose
jobs are directly impacted by the MTA
Capital Plan, and for the millions of
New York’s working families who use
the bus and subway system every day,”
said TWU Local 100 president John
Samuelsen.
Local elected officials welcomed the
news.
“[This] is great news for the tens of
thousands of New Yorkers who depend on a
reliable mass transit system,” said Assembly
Speaker Carl Heastie. “The Assembly
Majority has always fought for adequate
resources to meet the needs of the MTA.
With ridership and usage levels at all time
highs, this critical agreement means peace
of mind for commuters and will enable the
MTA to update, modernize and expand its
infrastructure.”
Transit advocacy groups also praised the
deal.
“This is good news for the millions of
daily transit riders from the region who rely
on buses, subways and rail to get to work,
home and services,” said a joint statement
from Transportation Alternatives, Tri-State
Transportation Campaign, Riders Alliance,
Straphangers Campaign and Pratt Center for

t is hard to say this,” said
Eduardo Torres. “But I am
jealous of my son.”
Torres stood with his seven-year-old son as
he spoke about his feelings of envy.
Calvin is a Success Academy student and
the two had joined thousands of fellow family
members, students and administrators of
charter schools this past Wed., Oct. 7th at the
steps of City Hall in support of the privatelyrun network of schools.
Torres recalled his own experience
attending Bronx public schools, which he said
were dangerous and lacking opportunities.
“My life might have turned out better if I
went to this type of school,” said Torres.
Supporters on Wednesday took similar issue
with the city’s education system, insisting that
too many children are stuck in failing public
schools.
Using the theme “a tale of two school
systems,” the advocates were joined by Bronx
Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., who called
on Mayor Bill de Blasio to provide equitable
treatment for charter schools and find space
for additional charter locations.
Organized by lobbying group Families
for Excellent Schools (FES), the City Hall
press conference followed a rally at Cadman

including more than 30 sites in the huge
Success Academy network, whose founder
Eva Moskowitz has been an outspoken

“I tip my hat to you,” Díaz said to the throng
of charter supporters. “As parents, there is
nothing more powerful, nothing more serious
that you can do than to come out and advocate
for a better education for your child.”
He referenced the rapid growth of charter
schools in the Bronx, and said that his borough
has seen positive collaboration between
charters and public schools at co-located sites.
“The fact of the matter is that charter schools
are here to stay,” said Díaz. “All we want from
you, Mr. Mayor, is to treat them equitably.”
Nigeria Hayes, whose son Louis is a fourth
grader at Success Academy’s Harlem West
location, said she was a believer in charter
schools because they engage parents in the
education process.
“I feel that charter schools give you more
hands-on skills to help your child learn,” said
Hayes.
Before switching to a charter school, Hayes’
son attended a poorly ranked Harlem public
school, which Hayes said was disengaged
from helping his academic performance.
“They just had parents sign stuff and return
it,” Hayes remarked. “There was no effort to
involve us in his learning.”
Charter schools also bring a greater
atmosphere of discipline, says Hayes.
“There’s more respect for the rules,” she
remarked. “They wear uniforms, and feel like
they’re all part of the same family.”
When her daughter’s reading skills
languished while attending a failing District
7 public school, Bronx parent Kenia Rivera
decided to move her kids to a charter school.
“The public school didn’t seem interested
in finding out why she was struggling,”
commented Rivera. “The charter school
provided help with reading, and even noticed
signs of dyslexia.”

properly. We are trying
to implement healthy
products.”

also a co-owner at the
store, observed that the
display of products could greatly influence
consumers’ decisions. To have the most
positive impact on shoppers, he said,
the most nutritious items at the market
were purposely placed right at the store’s
entrance.“All the healthy items are in plain
sight,” said Rene.
The fruits and vegetables, for example,
are outside on the street and are the first
items shoppers encounter. The nuts, dried
fruits, cereal bars, whole wheat grains,
and other healthy items can be found

quite daunt the enthusiasm of younger
consumers, who seek out the junk food
in any corner of the store, the strategy has
worked for the most part.
Many shoppers, he said, opted for the
healthier fare.

options for foods like fruits and vegetables
while being targeted by marketing for junk
food or sugar sweetened beverages.”
As a direct result of a poor diet, added
Brown-Dudley, considerably higher numbers
of residents in East Harlem are affected
by chronic diseases, such as diabetes,
hypertension and obesity.
She noted that 1 in 8 adults in El Barrio
suffers from diabetes.
Senator Serrano agreed that there was a
correlation.
“So many in our community are suffering
from chronic illnesses,” he remarked, praising
Mi México Mini Market for setting an
example for other bodegas in the community.
“Respect for the community is what this store
is showing.”
Brown-Dudley said that the marker’s efforts
represented a step forward.
“Our efforts are paying off,” she said. “And
more needs to be done.”
Elmer Medina knows well both the dangers
and rewards associated with nutrition
choices.
A few years ago, he was diagnosed with
pre-diabetes and was prescribed medication.
But, after drastically changing his food
intake, his health has improved.
Every morning, he said, he prepares
his own breakfast, which consists of a
glass of water with lemon, followed by a
smoothie containing a variety of fruits and
vegetables- many of which he buys at Mi
México.
“I stopped taking the pills,” he said. “You
need to take care of yourself. It is important
to take care of your health.”

Despite feeling somewhat limited because of
her lack of fluency, Verónica Aparicio says she
strives to remain involved in her children’s school
work and activities. But she feels frustrated that
communication is less than optimal.
“I consider myself an active parent that
participates in the school, but I can’t always
express what I think or feel because there
aren’t always people around that understand
Spanish,” she said, adding that communicating
with teachers was especially difficult as the
majority of them only spoke English.
Parents from Yemen, India, and Bangladesh,
among other countries, also expressed concerns.
Etifaq Musleh, a parent who is also a
member of the Arab American Association
of New York, said that a lack of proper
language services resulted in her failure
to sign up on a sheet authorizing extracurricular activities for her daughter. Without
knowing, she had missed the deadline.
“My daughter started coming home with
documents that the teacher instructed to give to
her parents,” she said. “[But] these documents
were of no use to me, they were only in
English.”

arts aren’t just for witches and
goblins. According to member
dermatologists from the American
Academy of Dermatology, children
and teens, people who frequently
bite their nails, and people with a
weakened immune system are more
prone to getting warts than others.
Although warts can grow anywhere on
the skin, they are most common on people’s
hands and feet. According to dermatologists,
most warts are grey, brown, or skin-colored
rough bumps that may have little black dots
on them. People often call these dots “seeds,”
but they are actually clogged blood vessels.
Other warts are smooth, flat, pink bumps –
often occurring on the face.

“Warts are caused by a virus, and the virus
can sometimes spread from one place on your
body to another or from person to person,”
said board-certified dermatologist Adam J.
Friedman, MD, FAAD, Associate Professor
of Dermatology, Residency Program Director
and Director of Translational Research,
George Washington School of Medicine and

immune system responds to the wart virus
differently, so not everyone who comes in
contact with the virus develops warts.”
To prevent warts from spreading, Dr.
Friedman recommends the following tips:
1.Do not pick or scratch warts, or touch
someone else’s wart.
2.Wash your hands after
treating warts.
3.Wear flip-flops in public
showers and pool areas.
4.Keep warts on your feet dry,
as moisture tends to allow
warts to spread.
Although most warts go
away without treatment within
two years, there are things you
can do to help get rid of warts
more quickly. However, says
Dr. Friedman, home treatment
for warts is trial and error;
what works for one person may not work for
another and it is impossible to directly
kill the wart virus. Home treatments
are intended to irritate or inflame
the wart area so that your immune
system will fight off the virus.
To treat common warts at home,
Dr. Friedman recommends one of
the following methods:
1. Apply a wart treatment
product with salicylic acid to your wart:
Available over-the-counter, this will help
peel the wart-ridden skin and irritate the
wart, which may trigger the immune
system to respond. Before applying the
product, soak the wart in warm water and
then sand the wart with a disposable emery
board. Use a new emery board each time
you do this, and keep in mind that it can
take several months to see good results.
2. Cover the wart with duct tape: Although
studies conflict about whether this gets
rid of warts, changing the tape every few
days may peel away layers of the wartridden skin and trigger the immune system
to fight off the wart. To do this,
soak the wart in warm water and
then sand it with an emery board.
Afterwards, apply duct tape to
the area. Remove and reapply the
duct tape every five to six days
until the wart is gone.
If you notice that the skin
around your wart is raw or
bleeding, says Dr. Friedman,
stop treating the wart at home
and see a board-certified
dermatologist. You should also
see a dermatologist if you cannot
get rid of your wart; your wart
hurts, itches, or burns; you have many warts;
you have a wart on your
face or genitals; or if you
have a skin growth and are
unsure if it’s a wart or something else,
as some skin cancers can look like
warts.
“Dermatologists can treat
warts through prescription
medications
or
in-office
procedures,” said Dr. Friedman. “However,
it’s important to remember that there is no
cure for the wart virus, so new warts can
appear in a new spot at any time.”

“I’m advocating very much for him,” she
said. “I’d like to see more charter schools
opened that can handle autistic children.”
As with a similar rally the group sponsored
last year, the October 7 event was a show of
force for FES, which has become the biggest
lobbying group in the state, spending nearly
$10 million dollars on events in 2014.
Its efforts appear to be earning political
clout ― last year, Governor Andrew M.
Cuomo signed a law requiring New York City
to give charter schools free space or else pay
a portion of their rent, if private space was
required. The group continues to push for
more space within public school buildings.
In response to the rally, the Mayor’s office
pointed to the administration’s initiatives to
improve public school education, including
pre-K for all, and programs that offer reading
support for second graders and Advanced
Placement classes for all students.
In September, de Blasio unveiled an
“Equity and Excellence” plan for boosting
public schools, which will cost the city $186
million annually, with full implementation of
all programs expected by 2026.

While the treatment of charter schools has
been a hotly contested political issue, Díaz
― seen as a potential challenger to de Blasio
in the next mayoral race ― told the crowd
that political rhetoric from either side has a
negative influence on children.
“Be careful with the vitriol,” Díaz remarked.
“Our babies are smart. They hear what you’re
saying.”

changed everything.
In the meantime, he took ballet classes at
the Broadway Dance Center. He auditioned
for Dance Theater of Harlem and got accepted
with a partial scholarship. He also studied at
the Joffrey Ballet.
“I was never in the classes with the cool
kids,” he said, referring to elite students taking
more modern ballet classes inspired by George
Balanchine. “I always had the Russians.”
Yet the Russian teachers gave him
something the cool kids never got—a rigorous
classical training that quickly sharpened his
technique and ultimately made him a stronger
and better dancer.
“It was a lot of work,” he said. “But I wasn’t
a stranger to hard work.”
Ferreras seem to always be doing things
that require a lot of work.
“I have to do something different,” he
said. “I put myself in situations where I get
opportunities to do things. I was never one of
the cool kids—so what can I do that the cool
kids can’t do? I would see myself that way.”
