WEEKLY
NOTE
Blessed are the Poor
in Spirit
onsidering
Christian
morality in the
Beatitudes, we
clearly see that the
first Beatitude—
“Blessed are the poor
in spirit, for theirs is
the kingdom of
heaven” (Matthew
5:3)—is linked to the
10th Commandment:
“You shall not covet
your neighbor’s
goods.”
C
Why does Christ
put this Beatitude
first? St. Paul
answers that: “the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this
craving that some have wandered away from the faith” (1 Timothy 6:10). “If
we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content” because that’s all
we need to reach heaven, whereas “those who desire to be rich fall into
temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge
men into ruin and destruction” (1 Timothy 6:6-9).
We seem to acquire covetousness as children, fighting over toys or over
getting a bigger piece of cake. If one child is having fun with a toy—with a
toy truck, for example—another child will go over to him or her and grab the
toy: “It’s my turn… it’s my toy…” Often a fight breaks out and a tug-of-war
ensues, until they break the toy. In the process, the children send a message to
each other: “This toy is more important to me than you are.” No wonder envy
takes hold of us, as we put things before people.
In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:19-34), our Lord expounds on
what it means to be poor in spirit. It entails seeking to build up treasures in
heaven—not earthly treasures—by prayer and sacrifice, and by serving Christ
in serving others: “as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you
did it to me” (Matthew 25:40). Desire for riches (mammon)
Continue on page 2
enslaves us, such that we no longer have the freedom to serve God or others.
Without a poverty of spirit, the desire for earthly riches blinds us, such that
we no longer value our relationship with God. This blindness causes us to lose
sight of the final destiny of heaven. This is why the Catechism of the Catholic
Church says: “Detachment from riches is necessary for entering the Kingdom of
heaven. ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit’” (CCC 2556).
When we lack detachment from material possessions, we become anxious
about such things as clothing, food, or about the downturn in the economy or
stock market. If we rely on God’s loving providence to take care of us, we will be
at peace. How often the anxieties about layoffs with the possibility of losing a job
paralyzes a company, with everybody talking endlessly about “what if…” and
who’s next… such that no work gets done.
Some try to deal with anxiety over material possessions by getting insurance
policies for every eventuality. Although it is good to get health, car, fire, even
flood and earthquake insurance, it cannot protect us from everything—some even
worry about whether their insurance policy covers being hit by an asteroid! Our
Lord teaches us that those who are poor in spirit are not “anxious about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will be anxious for itself” but rather they “seek first [God’s]
kingdom and his righteousness” because God will see to it that all their real needs
are taken care of (Matthew 6:34 and 33).
Let’s look at our own personal attitudes towards material things. How
do I react when someone dings my car, or “borrows” something dear to me?
Do my reactions and attitudes reflect our Lord’s: “Foxes have holes, and birds
of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head”
(Matthew 8:20)?

NOTATKA TYGODNIA
„błogosławieni ubodzy w duchu, albowiem do nich należy
królestwo niebieskie” (Mt 5:3) – łączy się z dziesiątym
przykazaniem, które mówi, by nie pożądać żadnej rzeczy,
która należy do bliźniego.
C
M
(1 Timoteo 6:6-9).
Dlaczego Chrystus umieszcza to błogosławieństwo na
pierwszym miejscu?
„Mając natomiast żywność i
odzienie, i dach nad głową, bądźmy z tego zadowoleni!”
ponieważ nie potrzeba nam nic więcej, by osiagnąć niebo, „a
ci, którzy chcą się bogacić, wpadają w pokusę i w
zasadzkę oraz w liczne nierozumne i szkodliwe pożądania.
One to pogrążają ludzi w zgubę i zatracenie.” (1 Tm 6:6-9).
wszelkich starań, by gromadzić sobie skarby w niebie – nie
złożone z rzeczy materialnych – lecz z modlitwy,
poświęcenia i służby Chrystusowi przez służbę bliźniemu:
„cokolwiek uczyniliście jednemu z tych braci moich
najmniejszych, mnieście to uczynili” (Mt 25:40). Pragnienie
służyć Bogu i ludziom.
Bogiem. To zaślepienie powoduje, że tracimy
z oczu nasz cel, którym jest niebo. Dlatego
właśnie Katechiznm Kościoła Katolickiego
mówi: „Oderwanie się od bogactw jest
nieodzowne, by wejść do Królestwa
niebieskiego. »Błogosławieni ubodzy w
duchu« (KKK, pkt. 2556).

Starajcie
się naprzód o królestwo i o Jego sprawiedliwość, a to
wszystko będzie wam dodane. (Mt 6:34, 33).
moja reakcja odzwierciedla nauczanie Jezusa: „Lisy
mają nory i ptaki powietrzne - gniazda, lecz Syn
Człowieczy nie ma miejsca, gdzie by głowę mógł
(Mateo 8:20).
