October 2014
Dear Talbot Hill Community,
I was happy to see you at our “Back to School Night” on September 23rd. We appreciate those
of you who were able to come meet your child’s teacher and hear about this year’s curriculum.
It’s hard to believe, but the first week of October marks the mid-term of this trimester. If you
have questions about your child’s progress, please discuss this with your child’s teacher. Parent/
Teacher conferences are coming in November and it is important not to wait until then to communicate with our staff. Continued involvement in your child’s education is crucial for their success.
October is a busy month for our MicroSociety Program. Students continue to learn about the
government, economics, and the voting process. Our student government elections begin with
student voter registration and move into our primary and general elections. This allows students
first hand to participate and learn about their role as a citizen in our community, but it is also reflective of our democratic process, especially with our state and national elections. This month
they will also be learning about their MicroSociety jobs, and those interested in being Managers
have been trained.
Before and after school safety reminders:
It is important to remember that there is no supervision for students before 8:40am. Please do not
drop off your children before that time. Also, thank you for remembering to stop in the office,
sign in and get a visitor’s badge when coming into school beyond our foyer area. Those who do
not have a visitor badge on and are in the classroom area, will be asked to return to the office to
sign in.
End of the day and after school safety reminders:
Please refrain from calls to make dismissal changes between 3:15-3:35pm. The calls are very
disruptive to the class as they finish lessons and prepare to leave. We also want to let you know
that we are requesting that you wait for your child outside and not in the foyer at the end of the
school day. This helps us ensure that students are safely getting to the bus area and other locations.
We appreciate your support in helping to make your child’s day productive and ensure a safe
environment.

Discovery Program Referral Process
The Renton School District Discovery Program includes a self-contained program which provides learning experiences and challenges for identified highly capable students in grades 3 – 8. There are three self-contained, elementary
classes located at Kennydale Elementary, Campbell Hill, and Talbot Hill Elementary. These three elementary schools
offer Discovery Program placement for highly capable students in grades 3, 4 and 5. The three district middle schools,
Dimmitt Middle School, McKnight Middle School, and Nelsen Middle School, offer the Discovery Program for highly capable students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Each fall we begin the process of identifying highly capable students who
may qualify for the program. The 2015-2016 referral deadline for students in grades two through seven is Friday, December 19, 2014.
Discovery Referral forms will be available from your child’s classroom teacher and in the main office at all elementary and middle schools in time for the November Parent/Teacher Conferences. This would be a great opportunity to
discuss the Discovery Program referral process with your child’s classroom teacher.
You may find additional information regarding the Discovery Program on the RSD Web Page:

Proceso de Remisión para el Programa de Descubrimiento
