Fast and Abstinence during Lent:
Ash Wednesday and Friday of the Passion and
Death of Our Lord are the most important penitential days of the liturgical year. They are days of both
fast and abstinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of
abstinence.
Canon 1252 states: All persons who have
completed their fourteenth year are bound by the law of abstinence;
all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their
sixtieth year.
The rule of fasting states that only one full meal may be taken per
day. Two small meals, “sufficient to maintain strength,” are allowed
but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between
meals breaks the fast but drinking liquids does not.
Abstinence refers to the eating of meat of warm blooded animals
(e.g. beef, lamb, chicken, pork). Under the present law, it does not
include egg or milk products, meat broth or gravies.
The substantial observance of the laws of fast and abstinence is a
serious obligation. Those who are not able to observe the laws
because of work or health related issues are excused from fasting and
abstinence. The individual conscience can decide if there is a proper
cause to excuse. A more serious reason should be present to excuse
from the Ash Wednesday and Good Friday penance.
Question: Lent, the period of prayer and fasting in
preparation for Easter, is 40 days long, but there are 46
days between Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the
Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, and Easter. So how
are the 40 days of Lent calculated?
Answer: When the Church expanded the period of fasting and prayer in preparation for Easter from a few days to 40 days
(to mirror Christ's fasting in the desert, before He began His public
ministry), Sundays could not be included in the count. This was
because early Christians considered all Sundays and not simply
Easter Sunday—as days to celebrate Christ's Resurrection,
Christians were forbidden to fast & do other forms of penance on
those days. Thus, in order for Lent to include 40 days on which
fasting could occur, it had to be expanded to six full weeks (with six
days of fasting in each week) plus four extra days, Ash Wednesday &
Thursday, Friday, & Saturday that follow it. Six times six is thirty-six,
plus four equals forty. That’s how we arrive at the 40 days of Lent!
St. Martha’s Guild
Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each
month, at 6:00 PM in the Gathering Hall.
Due to multiple Ash Wednesday services in the
Church, the February 10th Guild meeting has been RESCHEDULED
to Wednesday, February 24th at 6pm. This meeting will be a
combined February-March meeting.

Quinceañeras are held on Saturdays at 12Noon. The young woman
and her parents are required to meet with the Priest or Deacon one
month prior to the celebration.
FUNERAL MASS: Contact the Parish Office for a date and time if
not already arranged through the mortuary. You will then be
contacted by our Funeral Mass Coordinator to arrange music and
readings.
MINISTRY TO THE SICK/HOMEBOUND: To arrange
Communion to the sick or homebound or to receive the Sacrament of
the Anointing of the Sick for someone on Hospice, seriously ill, the
elderly or anyone scheduled for surgery call the Parish Office.
SACRAMENT SPONSORSHIP
If you require a letter of permission to sponsor someone for a
Sacrament outside our parish contact the Parish Office.

acrecienta en nosotros el don de su Espíritu, infundido
ya en el Bautismo e impreso como « sello » en el

Ayuno y abstinencia durante
la Cuaresma:
El Miércoles de Ceniza y el viernes de
La Pasión y Muerte de nuestro Señor son los días de penitencia
más importantes del año litúrgico. Son días de ambos ayuno y abstinencia. Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia.
El Canon 1252 afirma: Todas las personas que han cumplido sus
catorce años se ven obligados por la ley de abstinencia; todos los
adultos están obligados por la ley del ayuno hasta el comienzo de
sus sesenta años.
La regla del ayuno declara que sólo se puede comer una comida
completa al día. Se permiten dos comidas pequeñas, “suficientes
para mantener la fortaleza,” pero, juntas, no deben ser igual a otra
comida completa. El comer entre comidas quiebra el ayuno, pero el
beber líquidos no lo hace.
Abstinencia se refiere al comer la carne de animales de sangre
caliente (e.g. carne de res, cordero, pollo, cerdo). Conforme a la ley
presente, eso no incluye productos lácteos o huevos, consomé o
salsas de carne.
La observación sustancial de las leyes de ayuno y abstinencia es
una obligación seria. Se excusan del ayuno y la abstinencia aquellos
que no pueden cumplir estas leyes por asuntos de salud o de trabajo. Debe haber una razón seria para excusar la penitencia el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo.
.Pregunta: La Cuaresma, el período de oración y ayuno en preparación para la Pascua, dura 40 días, pero hay 46 días entre el Miércoles de Ceniza, el primer día en el calendario litúrgico católico romano y la Pascua. Entonces, ¿Cómo se calcula los 40 días de
Cuaresma?
Respuesta: Cuando la iglesia acrecentó el período de ayuno y
oración en preparación de la Cuaresma de unos días a 40 días
(para así reflejar el ayuno de Cristop enel desierto antes de comenzar su ministerio público) no se pudieron incluir los domingos en la
cuenta. Esto fue porque los primeros cristianos consideraban todos
los domingos, no sólo el domingo de Pascua, como da celebrar la
Resurrección de Cristo.
Christians were forbidden to fast & do other forms of penance on
those days. Así que para que la Cuaresma incluyera 40
días para el ayuno, se expandió a seis semanas (con seis
días de ayuno en cada semana) más cuatroo días extra, el
Miércoles de Ceniza y el jueves, viernes y sábado que
siguen. Seis por seis es treinta y seis más cuatro más son
cuarentas. Así es como se llega a los cuarenta días de
Cuaresma.
Gremio St. Martha
Las reuniones son el segundo miércoles de cada mes
en el salón social de la iglesia, a las 6:00pm.
Debido a los servicios multiples en la iglesia el Miércoles de Ceniza, la reunión del gremio del 10 de febrero se ha cambiado para el
miércoles 24 de febrero a las 6pm. La reunión combinará las reuniones de febrero y marzo.
En el sitio web del gremio hay listas para firmar para ayudar durante el servicio de Biblia de los martes y con la sopa y el pan. Todos
los miembros tienen acceso a la página. Se necesitan voluntarios. Si
