Dear Residents of the 87th Assembly District,
In January, the legislative session reconvened once again. My third year in Albany
has been a hectic, but memorable journey!
In the last few months, I have been spending more time in Albany tirelessly fighting to
pass legislation that will benefit not only our district but the State of New York as a whole.
I remain dedicated and unwavering in my pursuit of a progressive agenda, one that works
to improve the quality of life to those who call New York “home.” Recently, my colleagues
and I successfully passed a budget that will provide an additional $1.6 billion in education
funding, as well as expand affordable housing, and strengthen our criminal justice system.
I am proud to announce that I have been named Chair of the Assembly Subcommittee on
Transitional Services, where I will focus on better preparing inmates to return home after
prison. I have also been working on important reforms to our criminal justice system. Inside
this edition of my newsletter, there is a short article about the work that I’ve been doing.
As we approach the warmer months, I have a number of events to take advantage of
the warm weather. After a long and harsh winter season, my staff and I hope to make
this spring both entertaining and informative. I hope you will come out and join us as
we begin to promote them around the district.
I am also getting ready for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. This year, I am
hoping to double the number of participants, so be on the lookout this May and June
for information on how your child can participate.
My office also continues to display employment and internship listings in the front window. In addition, we have recently added scholarship listings, as well as resume creation
guidance. If you are in need of this information or other resources, please stop by my office.
I hope to see you out and about in the district as I travel around the area. Have a
safe and fun-filled spring!
Your Assemblyman,
También he estado
segura y divertida!
Su asambleísta,
Luis R. Sepúlveda

Criminal Justice Reform in New York –
Now is the Time for Change
As recent events have shined a
spotlight on criminal justice reform in
New York, Assemblyman Sepúlveda has
taken a leading role with his colleagues
in the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and
Asian Caucus to propose changes to the
current laws.
Just a few weeks ago, the Assembly
held a public hearing on the need for
criminal justice reform and is planning
further hearings with community leaders,
law enforcement officials, legal experts,
and other stakeholders to ensure that these
important issues are discussed in an open
and transparent forum and to develop
meaningful reforms.
“In the United States, 2.3 million
people are currently incarcerated,”
Assemblyman Sepúlveda stated at a
press conference on criminal justice
reform. “Over 920,000 of them are
African-American and Latino males.
We spend $280 billion on prison services
every year. Imagine if we spent that
much money on furthering the education
of children in our communities.”
Assemblyman Sepúlveda discusses the criminal justice reform proposals included in the Black, Puerto
Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus’ People’s Priorities Budget.
In addition, Assemblyman Sepúlveda held his own forum on criminal justice reform
during the Somos el Futuro conference in Albany. He is now in the process of planning
an additional hearing within the 87th Assembly District to address constituent concerns
regarding current criminal justice policies.
