National Junior Honor Society The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the nation’s premier organizations established to recognize outstanding students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. The Dawes Chapter of NJHS seeks to help young student leaders find success in school and beyond through leadership, active involvement in service projects and community service while exhibiting exemplary character and citizenship. Students who have been enrolled at Dawes School for 2 quarters and meet the following criteria may be considered to join the Dawes School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Scholarship ● A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in core subject areas (Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Social Science). Students may be eligible in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Cumulative GPA in core subjects will be calculated beginning in 6th grade and students may be eligible as early as 3rd quarter of 6th grade. Leadership ● Provide verification of leadership roles in both the school and/or community. Positions in which you were responsible for directing or motivating others should be included (e.g., classroom job positions, team captains, community leader, club chairperson). You need to include the activity, role within the activity, as well as the name of the supervising adult. Service ● Fulfill a minimum of 15 hours of service. This must be at more than one location, may not be for family members, must be as a volunteer without pay, and not included on Candidate Form to meet leadership criteria. Citizenship ● A student who demonstrates citizenship: ● understands the importance of civic engagement ● has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects US government and all its laws ● demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with activities such as scouting, community organizations, school clubs Character ● NJHS follows the six pillars of character: ○ trustworthiness ○ respect ○ responsibility ○ fairness ○ caring ○ citizenship ● Students need to be able to take criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously. ● ● They will be held to the highest standards of honesty and reliability. Demonstrate outstanding behavior by not having suspensions or behavior violations. Students that meet the scholarship criteria will be invited to complete and return the 4 page candidate form. Additional Requirements: ● Candidates must be involved in one or more activities at Dawes Elementary School. ● Forms must meet requirements of being on time, signed, completed, following directions and legible to be considered. ● Once the NJHS Candidate Form is submitted, candidates will be selected for membership by a vote of the faculty panel on the basis of the qualifications listed above. ● Invitations for membership can be denied. This will not prevent a candidate from seeking membership at a later time. Discipline and Dismissal – ● Membership standing will be reviewed quarterly by the Chapter Advisor/Faculty Council. ● Any member who falls below the standards of scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship, or service may be considered for discipline or dismissal from the Dawes Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. A member is expected to maintain his/her academic standing and take an active role in service and leadership at Dawes School and the community. ● If a member’s quarterly grade point average (3.0) falls below the standard in effect when he/she was selected, he/she will be given a written warning and a reasonable time period for improvement. If the quarterly grade point average remains below standard at the end of the warning period, the student will be subject to further disciplinary action by the Chapter Advisor/Faculty Council that can include consideration of dismissal from the chapter. ● At the conclusion of each marking period, any members who have held a probationary status for the previous marking period will be reviewed. Members whose actions have resulted in compliance with the chapter requirements will be reinstated as members in good standing. Any members who remain out of compliance will be reviewed by the faculty council. ● Violations of the law or School Code of Conduct can result in immediate consideration of the dismissal of a member. All incidents will be reviewed by Faculty Council. ● Chapter officers, as representatives of the chapter, can be removed from their positions as a consequence of disciplinary actions taken by the chapter advisor/faculty council and/or principal. ● A member who resigns or is dismissed may never again be considered for membership in any chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Selection Process includes: ● Students who are academically eligible will receive an invitation to complete process for candidacy. ● ● ● ● ● NJHS Candidate forms must be completed and returned to Dawes by the required deadline. The Faculty Council will meet to review Candidate Forms and select new members. The Principal will be notified of the status of all the candidates. Parents and students will receive the results of the selection committee. Parents and students will receive the Induction Ceremony Invitation. Sociedad Honoraria Junior Nacional La Sociedad Honoraria Junior Nacional (NJHS) es una de las organizaciones principales de la nación establecida para reconocer a los estudiantes sobresalientes.
