ENCONMENDAR
As we gather around the bedside of our dying loved
ones, we entrust them to the Lord. We can do no more.
At some point, although medicine can offer some
comfort, it can no longer keep them alive. We face within
ourselves and in our loved ones the poverty and
dependence that has always marked our lives, even
when we have not been conscious of it.
Now, we entrust them to God, to the saints, and to the
angels. And when we do so, we acknowledge that we
belong to a great communion of holy men and women
and of spirits who serve the living God. What seems to be
the most solitary, the loneliest moment of our lives,
when we are dying, is rather a time of communion and
connection. The whole Church in heaven and on earth
gathers. The whole Church in this moment of
entrustment is our great sacrament of communion in the
Lord.

Cuando nos reunimos en torno al lecho de un ser
querido que está cercano a morir, lo encomendamos al
Señor. No podemos hacer más. En algún momento, aunque
la medicina pueda ofrecernos cierto consuelo, ya no puede
mantenerlo con vida. Encontramos dentro de nosotros y
en nuestros seres queridos la pobreza y la dependencia
que siempre han marcado nuestra vida, incluso cuando no

While seemingly far away and obsolete, poverty is
closer to home than it may seem. What can we do? Be a
volunteer. Be a donor. Be an advocate for justice. Pope
Francis tells us, “The measure of the greatness of a
society is found in the way it treats those most in need,
those who have nothing apart from their poverty.”
In efforts to align our church with Pope Francis’ call,
the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
(CCHD) works to combat the threats that poverty poses
and empower the poor through self-help programs. They
fund organizations in your neighborhood including
Latino Union, who collaborates with low-income
immigrant and US born workers to develop the necessary
tools to collectively improve social and economic
conditions.
Aunque a veces la pobreza nos parece lejana y obsoleta, está
más cerca de la casa de lo que pensamos. ¿Qué podemos
hacer? Sea un voluntario. Sea un donante. Ser un defensor
de la justicia. Papa Francisco nos dice: "La medida de la
grandeza de una sociedad se encuentra en la forma en que
trata a los más necesitados, los que nada tienen, aparte de su
pobreza."
