Guidance News 4 MDHS Student Services The Student Services Department at Mount Dora High School is designed to help each student understand their academic options, set personal goals, and achieve academic and vocational success. Counselors serve as a liaison for our students, faculty, administration, parents, and the community in helping each student reach their full potential while completing the state and local requirements for their high school diplomas. Students wishing to meet with guidance counselors are asked to make an appointment before or after school in the Guidance Office. Guidance counselors will then send for students at the first available opportunity. While students may be called out of class to meet with guidance counselors, they will not, however, be allowed to leave class to request an appointment. Bright Futures Seniors Be sure you are researching your options for after graduation; each option may have different admission dates, procedures and requirements. Whether you plan on attending college, the military, tech school, or have other plans, it is important to start researching these requirements now in order to be fully prepared. $$$ Scholarships $$$ Please check our website for full information www.mountdorahighschool.com FastWeb—FastWeb is a free scholarship search that does personalized scholarship matching, side-by-side college comparisons and financial aid and student loan tips. www. Leaving School 6 To leave school before dismissal, students must have parent permission and check out in the Attendance Office. Parents/guardians need a photo ID in order to sign out their child from school. If the student drives to school and needs to be signed out during the day, they must bring a note from the parent/guardian first thing in the morning to the Attendance Office. Then only after the parent/guardian is contacted by phone will the student be allowed to sign out. If the Attendance Office can not contact the parent/guardian, the student may not sign out. In addition, if a parent/ guardian needs to meet with their child during the school day, they will need to have a photo ID. Individuals not on the student’s approved sign-out list will not be able to sign out to meet with that student during the school day. Text Messaging! Administration has become aware that many students are text messaging in their classes during the school day. The Lake County School District “Code of Student Conduct & Policy Guide” states, “It is strictly prohibited to possess, display, distribute, and/or transmit pictures, text messages, video, and/or audio recordings while on school grounds.” Parents, we need your help!!! Often times the students tell administrators and teachers that it is my mom calling or texting. If you need to get a message to your child, please call the school at (352)383-2177 and we will deliver all emergency messages. Please discuss this issue with your child/children and remind them cell phones should be turned off and out of sight during the school day. Parent Drop-Offs And Pick-Ups Parents providing transportation to and from school for their students are asked to drop off and pick up students in the appropriate loading area only. The student drop-off and pick-up area at Mount Dora High School is at the front of the campus, in the parking area in front of Building 2, accessible through 8th Avenue. DO NOT drop off students on the streets in front, back or side of the school. Please drive slowly and be cautious of pedestrian crossings and teacher parking when driving through the one-way traffic lanes. For safety reasons, please do not drop off or pick up students in the bus loading zones while buses are present. School Volunteers Anyone interested in volunteering, chaperoning field trips, or working with students in any way, must fill out a volunteer application form. In addition to the application form, fingerprints must be recorded along with a photocopy of your photo ID, as required by the Lake County School district. If you would like to sign up as a Mount Dora High School volunteer, please contact Marlene Straughan, Assistant Principal at [email protected]. We are pleased to announce that beginning this fall, Mount Dora High School will be going BYOT: Bring Your Own Technology! Under this new initiative, students will be permitted to bring their own laptops or tablets (with a screen size of 7 inches or greater) to school to use as a learning tool in the classroom to research, collaborate, create, and produce evidence of their learning. The use of personal electronic devices at school is a privilege, and students are required to adhere to all district policies and procedures in order to be able to use their personal laptops or tablets while at school. If abused, as determined by a school administrator, a student’s privilege for using their personal technology at school may be taken away. Skyward Parents and students who HAD ACCESS to eSembler last year SHOULD have received an email at their registered email address with instructions on how to get their account set up for Skyward Family Access, the new parent/student gradebook. Parents need to print it, fill it out, and bring to the main office with ID for approval. Bus Notes If a student needs to ride a different bus, the signed parent note must be given to Ms. Carson in the Attendance Office at the beginning of the day. If an administrator can not reach the parent by phone by the end of the day, that student will not be able to ride a different bus home. Bring Your Own Technology! The Architectural Drafting Academy is a Career and Professional (CAP) Academy. A CAP Academy is an educational model for preparing secondary students for both postsecondary education and the workforce. The Architectural Drafting Academy trains the students in manual drafting, CAD drafting and building construction. The students receive hands-on education in current workplace skills using industry-standard equipment. The Architectural Drafting Academy students will be taking a professional industry certification exam in AutoCAD. They will be taking one of the following certifications: Autodesk - AutoCAD 2015 Certified User Exam, Autodesk – Inventor 2015 Certified User Exam, or Autodesk – Revit Architecture 2015 Certified User Exam. To prepare the students for the industry certification exam the students will be using CADLearning which provides the students with on-line videos, ebooks and practice quizzes for their chosen certification. 2015 Central Florida Construction Career Days The Mount Dora High School, Architectural Drafting 3 class was invited to attend the 2105 Central Florida Construction Career Days at the Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando, Florida. To increase the number of workers in the construction industry, transportation industry official began this education outreach of Construction Career Days for high school students in 1999. Construction Career Days is designed to introduce school students to the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the construction industry in a handsStudents Learning How to Tie Steel Rebar on environment. The students were able to participate in learning labs that also gave them the opportunity to use the equipment found on a construction site. Some of the learning labs were, how to interview for a job, 3-D printing, soil borings, water and soil conservation, surveying, and bridge building. The students rotated through the learning labs. In the land surveying learning lab the students had to guess the distance of an object and then the discovered the actual distance by using the total station. They also located a given point that was hidden by using the Global Positioning Station (GPS). In the rebar learning lab the students were able to learn how to tie the rebar that is used to reinforce concrete. They tied the rebar for bridge span and a highway sound barrier wall. At the Florida Electrical Apprenticeship & Training, (F.E.A.T), learning lab the students discovered how to work as a team by pulling and installing nine electrical wires through a conduit. The yummiest learning lab was the asphalt learning lab. The students learned about how asphalt is installed on the road and some of the specifications that are required for a road construction project. To demonstrate how the asphalt is created each student was given a small dish of coconut, oatmeal and sliced almonds, this was the aggregate for the asphalt. The aggregate had to be mixed well before the asphalt (melted chocolate) was poured into the mixture. Then the aggregate and asphalt were mixed. The chocolate mixture was poured on a surface and pressed down by the steam roller or in this case a rolling pin. At the end of the learning lab the students were able to eat their ‘asphalt’ cookie. The learning lab that every students enjoyed was the heavy equipment lab. During this lab the students were able to climb up on a many different types of heavy equipment and learn how to operate the equipment. Some of the equipment was a skid steer loader, loader backhoe, Mini hydraulic excavator and an articulating man lift.
