AURELIO RODRÍGUEZ:
LA PRESENCIA REAL DEL RETRATADO
Sólo los ángeles pintan con el sentimiento y la certidumbre con las que él lo hace.
Con esa mirada juvenil, capaz de emocionar y de emocionarse, ante un rostro humano, como
si no hubiera otro. Como si fuera el único en el mundo. Aurelio Rodríguez hace lo que sabe:
pintar. Y sabe muy bien lo que pinta.
Lo primero que siente quien contempla sus retratos, es la presencia real del retratado,
con sus dudas y carencias. La ternura, la inquietud, el contento, el desgarro y la zozobra de
los ojos que ahí te miran, desde la luz y las sombras de todas las horas vividas. Desde el color
de lo humano, como única verdad definitiva.
Nuestro pintor ha hecho muchas cosas. A él le debemos una riquísima obra plástica
que entronca con los grandes maestros españoles del XVII. Ha aplicado nuevos elementos y
diferentes realidades a su creación. Pero su mundo es, más que cualquier otro el de la figura
humana. Domina el arte del retrato. Sobre todo, porque es capaz de captar ese más allá del
retratado. Lo que viene a ser “el gran misterio y el verdadero reto de los maestros del género”,
en palabras de Taján. El desvelamiento de la incógnita interior. Los adentros del retratado.
Los pretendidos sentimientos de quien le mira. Aurelio Rodríguez pinta lo que conoce. Se
podría decir que recorre y, hasta sufre, el rostro que pinta. Se enfrenta con la incógnita de esa
mujer o de ese hombre que, en el fondo, es siempre la misma: ¿de dónde vengo? ¿a dónde
voy?. Y lo hace desde el temor y desde el temblor del que huye siempre de lo demasiado
obvio.
Definitivamente, le atrae lo insalvable. Por eso su mirada va siempre más allá de lo
que mira. Como si la verdad definitiva, sembrada de dudas y carencias, estuviera en otro sitio.
Por eso es capaz de levantar, con inagotable talento, el valor de lo más humano. Porque nadie
como él es capaz de rescatar con una pincelada la permanencia de lo impermanente. El misterio de un ser, aunque la noche se haya cerrado para siempre en sus ojos. La fuerza de una
piel amada. Cada latido de la carne. Cada gesto, cada sonrisa, cada caricia; lo que es y deja
enseguida de ser, quedan ahí para siempre, en esos retratos suyos que no se repiten nunca.
Sabedor de que no existe imagen alguna que nos conmueva o nos confunda más que
un rostro, Aurelio Rodríguez pone ante nuestros ojos el aliento humano a través de un rostro.
La mujer, el hombre, eternos. El pulso cotidiano por la alegría y la dicha posibles. La verdad,
sólo la verdad, alimenta su pintura y viceversa. Por eso sus retratos son vida, sólo vida. Ansia
de más vida.

THE INTRINSIC PRESENCE OF THE SUBJECT
Only angels paint with the same feeling and assurance as he does. With that youthful
look in his eyes which, in front of a human face, are both capable of moving and being moved, contemplating that face as if there were no other; as if it were the only one in the world.
Aurelio Rodríguez does what he knows well - painting; and he understands very well what
he paints.
The first thing one feels when contemplating his portraits is the intrinsic presence
of the subjects, with all their misgivings and shortcomings. You can feel the tenderness, the
torment, the happiness, the heartbreak and the anxiety in those eyes which are looking at you
from the light and shade of a lifetime, from the human character, which is the only definite
reality.
Our artist has done many things. We are indebted to him for an abundant collection
of evocative works connected to those of the great Spanish masters of the 17th century. He
has employed new elements and produced unique reality to his work. But, principally, his
world is that of the human figure. He dominates the art of portrait painting because, above
all, he is able to capture the very soul of his subject. This is, in the words of Tajan “the great
mystery and the real challenge to the masters of the genre”. The unveiling of the hidden
secrets of the soul. The innermost thoughts of the subject. The affected feelings when being
observed. Aurelio Rodríguez paints what he understands. One could say that he searches, or
even agonises over, the face he is to paint. He is faced with the mystery of this man or woman
which, deep down, is always the same. Where do I come from? Where do I go to? And he
approaches it with apprehension, trembling like those who always avoid the obvious.
Without doubt, he is attracted to the insurmountable. For this reason his vision goes
far beyond that which he observes; as if the unmistakeable reality, sprinkled with uncertainities and imperfections, were in another place.Nobody like him can, with a single brushstroke,
recover permanence from the ephemeral, restore the enigma of a human being although the
night has closed their eyes for ever, the vigour of a loved on´s flesh, every beat of the heart.
Every gesture, every smile, every caress, what they are and what they suddenly ceased to be
will for ever stay in his portraits which are never ever repeated.
In the knowledge that no image moves or bemuses us more than the human countenance, Aurelio Rodríguez sets before our eyes the human spirit by means of a face. The
woman, the man, made eternal. The daily struggle for possible happiness and fortune. The
truth, nothing but the truth nurtures his paintings and viceversa. Hence his portraits are life,
purely life: yearning for more life.

THE PORTRAIT
A permanent commitment that has been my open air school
being judged by a wide range of critical spectators and that
has helped me to improve my technique.
Thanks to the contact with a great variety of people and
cultures from all over the world, I have been able to mature in both ways, personally and humanly.
Inside the studio, there is the search for the expression to
detect the character, the discovery of the look that reveals
the invisible and interior.
