WORSHIP
ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –Marriage & Family
The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
"While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, gave it to them, and said, 'Take it; this is my body.'" Celebrating the Passover meal was nothing new for the disciples. They shared
bread and wine with their families and friends at this special ritual meal
every year as a part of their Jewish heritage. But when they were making preparations for this particular sacred supper, they did not know how
different this meal was going to be.
On this night, Jesus changed the formula. Instead of hearing
only the ancient words of the Passover prayers that his followers probably knew by heart, they heard these new, unexpected, and, frankly, quite
dramatic words: "This is my body ... This is my blood." Nobody had
ever made such an unusual claim before. But this was more than a statement. It was a command. Not only did Jesus enlighten his disciples
about the miracle taking place as the bread and wine became his body
and blood, but he also ordered them to "take it." Being passive observers
was not enough. Jesus wanted his followers to be personally involved in
accepting and receiving his body and blood.
The gift of the Eucharist that Jesus instituted for all believers
at that Last Supper is not just a sign or a symbol of Jesus' sacrifice. It is
something that we are called to participate in. He has given us the instruction to take the eucharistic bread--his body hidden within it--and to
make it part of ourselves. Through this great sacrament, which we celebrate on today's feast of Corpus Christi, we are able to be united, in a
deeply mystical yet truly physical way, to our Lord and Savior. This
union brings about the promise in today's Alleluia from John's Gospel:
"Whoever eats this bread will live forever." © Liturgical Publications Inc.
Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al)
As we return to Ordinary Time it is good to review and understand this
important time in our liturgy. Ordinary Time refers to all of those parts
of the Catholic Church's liturgical year that aren't included in the major
seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter). Ordinary Time is a feature of the current (post-Vatican II) liturgical calendar. In the traditional
Catholic calendar (before 1970), the Sundays of Ordinary Time were
referred to as the Sundays After Epiphany and the Sundays After Pentecost. Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" because the weeks are
numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English
word order. Thus, Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the
Church—the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in
the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. It's appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for the Second
Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually the first Sunday celebrated
in Ordinary Time) always features either John the Baptist's acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or Christ's first miracle—the transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of
God, walks among us and transforms our lives. That's why there's
nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary Time.

IN TRAFFIC…
Dear God, some of your creations just don’t belong behind the wheel of
a car. Since we have this challenge, please help me rise to the occasion;
to be patient, aware and safe with what’s under my control. Please keep
that crazy driver safe, that his encounters don’t involve the clash of
metal. Thank you for the blessing of near misses. Amen.

Parents: Year 2 of the Diocesan Evangelization Pastoral Plan is Focusing on
the Domestic Church. This means that it is in the context of the family
that we first learn who God is and how to prayerfully seek His will for
us.” Teach your children prayers at a early age. They can learn them as
young as 3-4 years old. Talk to them about your faith and share how God has
touched your life. Show them how to be caring to our neighbors by bringing
none perishable items for the Out Reach Center and signing up to different
events and needs here at the church. (Men’s Shelter, Parish Picnic, Church
Festival, VBS volunteer, Catechist for Religious Education or Children’s
Liturgy, read the Word in church, be a Eucharistic Minister, etc…) Your
example is what they will follow.

(Hank) in our memorial garden, with reception to follow in our

LEGACIES FROM OUR LOVERS!
Three weeks ago we received a $10,657 check from the estate of our
deceased, longtime parishioner Anne (Limbert) ReDavid. Anne died in
2011, having been widowed since Vincent ReDavid’s death in 2005.
Anne was always an active and contributing member of the parish; she
was a people, parish, Women’s Guild, dog (Muffin) lover—now rejoicing in the heavenly communion of saints and animals!
Since 2000 we have received legacies from the estates of Josephine
Brown, Robert and Agnes Boyce, Maureen Bolger, Hank Gizzi, Virginia
Duchene and Catharine de Nerville. Added to Anne’s gift the total from
these 7 estates is $352,127.
These generous gifts helped pay off the mortgages of Renaissance I
(parish hall & education wing--1998-99) and Renaissance Revisited II
(pastoral center and outreach center--2011).

REFLEXIONES
