Renovation Q&A
Q: What is the status of the renovations?
A: As of the printing of this bulletin, Tuesday, February 10th, the renovations are still on track for the Dedication
Mass with Bishop Vann on Friday, March 6th at 7pm. (Only two more Sundays in the tent after this weekend!).
Q: What is happening to the statues in the church?
A: There are currently three statues in the church. The first is a marble statue of the Holy Family that the founding
pastor, Fr. Louis Knight donated. Fr. Knight placed the statue outside and, at a later date, the next pastor moved it
inside the church. The statue will be returned outside where it will grace our beautiful garden by the labyrinth.
The second statue is of the Pieta. It is a resin image which was located in “Mary’s Chapel”. This statue will be properly weather-proofed, placed outside and will create an additional place to pray.
When I arrived to parish in July 2013, I returned the statue of St. Edward the Confessor from a meeting room to
the church at the request of some parishioners. However, to date, we haven’t had a dedicated place for the statue.
As part of the renovations, one of the cupboards next to the baptismal font is being taken out and transformed into
a devotional niche where St. Edward will stand and watch over us while providing an appropriate proper place to
venerate our patron saint.
Q: So, are we getting new statues?
A: Yes. Statues are an important aspect of our Catholic life and worship-experience. The liturgical consultant that
Fr. Steve hired noted the absence of commissioned art in our church and recommended commissioning artwork of
the Holy Family, Mary and a full liturgical year of seasonal decorations. The consultant recommended a budget allowance of $653,000 for art and decorations. Although I agree with these recommendations, our renovation
budget does not include any money for the addition of new statues or liturgical decorations. Nonetheless, in response to my requests for your comments, questions, and suggestions over the last several months, many have expressed a desire to include statues of Mary and St. Joseph near the sanctuary of the church. The idea of a commissioned statue of the Holy Family that complements the size and style of the renovated church has also arisen. While
there are no immediate plans to add statuary, we will put together a committee to investigate these options. I will
keep you posted.
Q: Are we keeping the same crucifix that was in the church?
A: When the new church was built in 1994, a lot of things were simply brought over from the old church and put in
the new church. Because the new church is so much bigger than the old church, some of the old items – although
beautiful - like the Stations of the Cross, where too small for the size of the new church. Another example of this
was the crucifix of the Resurrected Jesus which was brought over from the old church and hung in the new church
from 1994-1999. To clarify, a crucifix is a cross with the corpus of Christ.
In 1999, an artist was commissioned to design a bronze corpus of Christ. But the commission did not include the
cross. The cross was made separately. There was tremendous difficulty in hanging the crucifix because the weight
of the corpus was very heavy causing the crucifix to lean forward. To remedy the problem, a cross was constructed
of hollow wood, with a 2" box steel frame internally mounted to the cross that the bronze sculpture is mounted to.
With the crucifix then still pitching forward after it was suspended, a chrome beam was awkwardly mounted from
the ceiling through the back of the crucifix to make it more vertical.
The renovated church will include the same stunning, iconic bronze corpus of Christ. It will be hung on a new solid
oak cross and fixed in (not on top of) the glass rererdo (wall). The new setting for the crucifix places Jesus Christ as
the centerpiece of the sanctuary helps draw our eye and heart to the living presence and reality of Christ on the
Altar, Ambo, and in the person of the priest.

PRAYER LITURGY IN SOLIDARITY
WITH PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS
MARCH 3, 2015
We all read about the many Christians of various
denominations who are being severely persecuted
for their faith in different parts of the world today.
What are we doing about it? Join Bishop Kevin
Vann, Bishop Mar Awa from the Apostolic
Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, and
other Christian religious leaders from Orange
County on Tuesday evening, March 3rd, for an
“Evening Prayer Service in Solidarity with
Persecuted Christians.” This prayer event will
take place from 7:30-8:30 PM in the Arboretum
on the Christ Cathedral Campus, 1380 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove. It is being hosted
by the Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs
Commission of the Diocese of Orange. A reception will follow in the Cultural Center. All are invited to join us! For more information, contact
Ecumenical Commission Member Greg Kelley
