Anche per l’anno in corso 2014 il Pontificio Consiglio per gli
Operatori Sanitari (per la Pastorale della Salute) organizza la
sua XXIX Conferenza Internazionale, che si svolgerà nei giorni di
giovedì 20, venerdì 21 e sabato 22 novembre nell’Aula del Sinodo, ed avrà per tema generale: “La Persona con disturbi dello
spettro autistico: animare la speranza”.
Tenendo conto della notevole incidenza che i disturbi dello
spettro autistico comportano, nonché i problemi posti nell’ambito della ricerca, nell’individuazione dei sintomi che solitamente
affiorano fin dai primi anni di vita con il diretto coinvolgimento
della famiglia ma anche del mondo della scuola, e, non ultimo, della stessa comunità ecclesiale, il Dicastero ha ritenuto che
quello dell’autismo potesse costituire un tema da affrontare e
da approfondire in occasione dell’annuale Conferenza Internazionale.
Come si evidenzia dal programma, numerosi Esperti – scienziati, ricercatori e specialisti nella tematica in oggetto sono stati
invitati per un confronto interdisciplinare e per studiare i disturbi
dello spettro autistico dal punto di vista medico, psicologico, familiare, sociale, pastorale e religioso.
Durante i due giorni di studio la Conferenza Internazionale si
articolerà secondo alcune principali direttrici, quali l’epidemiologia e la politica sanitaria, nazionale e internazionale; la ricerca,
la prevenzione e gli apporti terapeutici; la diagnosi precoce e
l’identificazione dei disturbi dello spettro autistico; i trattamenti
farmacologici e comportamentali; gli aspetti socio-culturali, educativi, e gli approcci teologici e pastorali.

Promuovendo questa iniziativa il Pontificio Consiglio per gli
Operatori Sanitari intende così manifestare la sollecitudine della
Chiesa sia alla comunità scientifica, internazionale e nazionale,
sia alle famiglie, al mondo della scuola ed alle Associazioni che
si prendono cura delle persone affette dalla diffusa sindrome
dello spettro autistico.
Al riguardo, anche nel Messaggio del nostro Pontificio Consiglio, pubblicato in occasione della Giornata Mondiale sull’Autismo
lo scorso 2 Aprile 2014, annunciando la celebrazione di questo
Convegno, è scritto: “La complessità che la sindrome dello spettro autistico presenta alla comunità scientifica, alle famiglie, alle
istituzioni formative e di inserimento sociale potrà in quella sede,
con l’intervento di ricercatori, esperti ed operatori sanitari di tutto
il mondo, trovare un momento di confronto e di impegno. Come
afferma Papa Francesco nella sua recente Esortazione apostolica Evangelii gaudium, «è indispensabile prestare attenzione per
essere vicini a nuove forme di povertà e di fragilità in cui siamo
chiamati a riconoscere Cristo sofferente, anche se questo apparentemente non ci porta vantaggi tangibili e immediati» (n. 210)”.
Giovedì 20 novembre la nostra Conferenza Internazionale
inizierà con la celebrazione della Santa Messa nella Basilica di
San Pietro. A questa faranno seguito le Relazioni e gli Interventi
nell’Aula del Sinodo, che si susseguiranno fino all’intera giornata del venerdì successivo. Nella mattinata di sabato 22 i partecipanti alla Conferenza si ritroveranno, infine, con le persone
affette da disturbi dello spettro autistico ed i loro familiari, gli
accompagnatori, gli operatori sanitari, i sacerdoti, i religiosi e le
religiose nonché i volontari nell’Aula Paolo VI per un Incontro di
testimonianza e preghiera con il Santo Padre Francesco, insieme
ad un momento musicale. Proprio per il notevole apporto offerto dalla musica per questa specifica patologia, si è ritenuto opportuno che detto Incontro con il Papa assuma anche i contorni
di una ‘festa’, rendendo così più agevole il coinvolgimento e la
partecipazione delle persone che saranno presenti all’Incontro,
quale segno anche dell’attenzione, della vicinanza e della solidarietà della comunità ecclesiale.

Una testimonianza preziosa sarà inoltre offerta dall’esposizione delle opere di un pittore autistico di Taiwan, che è riuscito
ad affermarsi come artista in ambito internazionale e che sarà
presente al nostro Evento.
Vogliamo affidare i Lavori di questo nuovo sforzo organizzativo alla protezione della Madonna Addolorata, che stette presso
la croce di Cristo. Affidando al suo materno soccorso le difficoltà
che gravano sulle persone autistiche e sui loro familiari in particolare, come pure le ansie che accompagnano il mondo scientifico in questa sfida, preghiamo di camminare con Lei sulla via
della fede per unire le nostre sofferenze alla passione di Cristo,
affinché diventino occasione di grazia e strumento di evangelizzazione e di salvezza per tutti.

Presentation
In the year 2014, as well, the Pontifical Council for Health
Care Workers (for Health Pastoral Care) is organising an international conference (the twenty-ninth) and this will be held on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday 20-22 November in the Synod
Hall of the Vatican. Its general subject will be: ‘The Person with
Autism Spectrum Disorders: Animating Hope’.
Bearing in mind the notable impact of autism spectrum disorders, as well as the problems that exist both in the field of research and in the identification of pathological symptoms, which
usually emerge in the early years of life with the direct involvement of the family but also of the world of schooling and, not
least, of the Church community itself, this Pontifical Council was
of the view that autism was a subject that could be addressed
and examined on the occasion of its international conference.
As is highlighted in the programme, numerous experts in this
field of study – scientists, researchers and specialists on the topic
– have been invited for an interdisciplinary exchange and to
study autism spectrum disorders from a medical, psychological,
familial, social, pastoral and religious point of view.
During the two days of study the international conference
will be organised around a number of principal topics, such as
epidemiology and national and international health-care policies; research, prevention and therapeutic contributions; the
early diagnosis and identification of autism spectrum disorders;
pharmacological and behavioural therapy; the socio-cultural and
educational aspects; and theological and pastoral approaches.
Promoting this initiative the Pontifical Council for Health Care
Workers thus intends to express sensitivity and nearness of the

Church to, and solidarity with, both the international and national scientific community and families, the world of schooling
and the associations that care for people with this widespread
syndrome of autism spectrum.
It is relevant to point out here that in the Message of our
Pontifical Council which was published in the occasion of the
World Autism Day of 2 April 2014, I wrote when announcing
the holding of this conference that: ‘The complexity which the
syndrome of autism spectrum presents to the scientific community, to families and to institutions concerned with education
and social integration, can on that occasion, through the papers
and contributions of researchers, experts and health-care workers from all over the world, find a moment of dialogue and
commitment. As Pope Francis observed in his recent apostolic
exhortation Evangelii gaudium: ‘It is essential to draw near to
new forms of poverty and vulnerability, in which we are called
to recognize the suffering Christ, even if this appears to bring us
no tangible and immediate benefits’ (n. 210).
On Thursday 20 November 2014 our international conference will begin with a celebration of the Holy Mass in St. Peter’s
Basilica. This will be followed by the papers and contributions
in the Hall of the Synod which will follow one another for the
whole of Friday. In the morning of Saturday 22 November those
taking part in the international conference will join people with
autism spectrum disorders and their family relatives, those who
accompany them, health-care workers, priests, men and women
religious, and voluntary workers, in the Paul VI Hall for a meeting of testimonies and prayer with the Holy Father Francis,
along with a musical moment.
Bearing in mind the notable contribution offered by music for
this specific pathology, it was believed advisable that this meeting
with the Holy Father should also have the features of a ‘party’,
thereby making easier the involvement and the participation of
the people who will be present at the meeting, as a sign of the
care, nearness and solidarity of the Church community.

Valuable testimony will also be offered by the exhibition of
works by an autistic painter from Taiwan who has managed to
become established as an artist on the international scene and
who will also be present at our event.

We want to entrust the deliberations of this new organisational initiative to the protection of Our Lady of Sorrows who was
near to the cross of Christ. In entrusting to her maternal help
the afflictions that weigh upon autistic people and their family
relatives in particular, as well the concerns that accompany the
scientific world in the challenge that this pathology imposes, we
pray that we will walk with her on the way of faith in order to
unite our sufferings to the passion of Christ so that they become
an occasion for graces and an instrument for evangelisation and
salvation for everyone.

issue of the journal Dolentium Hominum containing the proceedings of the
