Mayor Taylor applauds healthy workplaces

A total of 36 local companies
are leading the way when it
comes to supporting their employees’ health and wellness
needs.
Mayor Ivy Taylor and the
San Antonio Business Group on
Health (SAGH) recognized these
local employers at the Healthy
Workplace Recognition Program
held Wednesday morning at Phil
Hardberger Park Urban Ecology
Center.
“We recognize local employers who create and maintain a
culture of wellness with their
organizations,” explained Julie
Tatum, SAGH president.
The program honored employers with bronze, silver, gold or
platinum-level awards for small,
medium and large corporations.
The City of San Antonio was
one of the seven worksites honored with a Platinum award, the
highest level of recognition.
Mayor Ivy Taylor spoke about
some of the physical and wellness programs offered at the
City, which included discounts
on gym memberships, flyers
on the back of bathroom stall
doors that list healthy tips, active weight watcher programs,
as well as fitness classes in gyms
and parks across the city.
She added that she also promotes a healthy lifestyle.
“In my role as mayor, I try to
do my part to encourage community members to go out and
get moving,” Taylor said.
More than 100 residents recently joined her on her first

a brisk 1.7- mile walk in District
two. She’ll soon be joining more
walking groups throughout the

She congratulated all of the
award-recipients for their efforts and mentioned a few of
her favorite health and wellness
programs from the companies
present.
Humana, a gold-award recipient, has a personal health coach
program that allows employees
to have access to one-on-one
coaching sessions to address
weight gain, diet, smoking and
exercising. Catto & Catto LLP,
gold-award recipient, challenged
employees to walk 300 miles
in six weeks through a virtual
countryside. Valero, platinumaward recipient, challenged
their employees to participate
in a mixture of exercise and
nutritional challenges to lose a
total of 350 lbs. and 150 inches.

The Healthy Workplace Recognition Program is an initiative
of SABGH in collaboration with
the Mayor’s Fitness Council. The
program was launched as a pilot
project in 2010 and awarded 9
companies. Five years later, the
number of award recipients has
quadrupled.

San Antonio is once again
strengthening ties with its trading
partners across the globe.
The San Antonio Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC)
will conduct its annual “SA to
DF” Trade Mission to Mexico
City, Nov. 8-10, with a delegation from San Antonio.
The SAHCC will be joined
by the members of the City of
San Antonio, CASA San Antonio, Asociación de Empresarios
Mexicanos, Frost Bank, Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Texas and
the State of Querétaro.
Dr. Esteban Lopez, regional
president of Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Texas, will chair the
delegation as it addresses a
lengthy list of the monetary
goals.
“We are excited to discover
new economic opportunities for
our city,” said Ramiro Cavazos,
SAHCC president and CEO.
“I’m confident the high caliber of
leaders from San Antonio joining
us will represent San Antonio
well, helping to expand trade
opportunities for San Antonio

The “SA to DF” Trade Mission
will be capped by the signing of
an economic agreement between
the Alamo City and Mexico City.
The Agreement is in line with the
Global Cities Initiative for which
San Antonio was selected to join
in 2012 as one of the initial six
U.S. cities.
The Global Cities Initiative is a
five-year project of the Brookings
Institution and JPMorgan Chase
with the goal to attract more
foreign direct investment and
provide new jobs and economic
growth for the San Antonio metropolitan area.
“I am excited to further solidify our friendship and relationship
with Mexico City by participating in an economic development
agreement with Mexico City’s
Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera,”
said San Antonio Mayor Ivy
Taylor. “Both this yearly trade
mission by the Hispanic Chamber
and our economic development
agreement exemplify San Antonio’s continued commitment
to trade and investment with
Mexico.”
Among the many objectives
of the agreement is to put both
San Antonio and Mexico City at
a competitive advantages by further expanding the already strong
cultural, historical and economic
ties between our cities.
That includes joint initiatives
in the areas of: export and foreign
direct investment, innovation and
research, education and human
capital, as well as knowledge and
innovation exchange. Specific industries will include Aerospace,
Manufacturing, Biotech, IT,
Energy and Tourism.
“San Antonio has a diverse
portfolio of sectors such as new
energy, biosciences, cyber security and aerospace,” said City of

Comentarios... Tranquilos.
La pelea por la
Casa Blanca es
tan fiera que parecería que las
elecciones presiJorge Ramos denciales son
mañana. Pero no.
Falta un año. Todavía hay tiempo
para separar a los improvisadores de
los más preparados y a los bravucones de los verdaderos líderes. Estar
al frente del país más poderoso del
mundo no es cualquier cosa.
Pero lo primero que me llama la
atención de esta campaña electoral
es que los candidatos no reflejan
a la población, ni en género, ni
en grupos étnicos ni en temas. De
los 18 candidatos que había en un
momento (15 republicanos y tres
demócratas), solo dos son mujeres:
la republicana Carly Fiorina y la
demócrata Hillary Clinton. En un
país donde hay más mujeres (161
millones) que hombres (156 millones), según datos del 2013, esto
es desilusionante y preocupante.
Lo mismo ocurre con respecto a
los grupos étnicos. La presidenta de
la Comisión Nacional Demócrata,
Debbie Wasserman Schultz, me
dijo en una entrevista que ellos
son el partido de la diversidad.”
Sin embargo, en el último debate presidencial entre demócratas

no vi a ningún candidato latino,
afroamericano o asiático. Sí, es
cierto, Barack Obama fue el primer
presidente afroamericano de la
historia. Pero eso ocurrió en el 2008.
¿Qué han hecho desde entonces los
demócratas para preparar a candidatos presidenciales de las minorías?
Aparentemente no mucho.
Entre los candidatos republicanos
hay más diversidad. El neurocirujano Ben Carson es afroamericano
y, por primera vez, hay dos candidatos latinos buscando la presidencia:
el senador Ted Cruz y el senador
Marco Rubio. Ambos son hijos
de inmigrantes, y también lo es el
gobernador Bobby Jindal, quien
tiene padres de la India.
Desafortunadamente, ni Cruz
ni Rubio apoyan la legalización
de la mayoría de los 11 millones
de inmigrantes indocumentados.
No entiendo por qué no le quieren
dar la oportunidad de regularizar
su situación a los inmigrantes que
llegaron después de sus padres.
Para que el partido republicano
haga las paces con los latinos es
necesario, primero, que apoye algún
tipo de reforma migratoria. Pero
tercamente se resiste a pesar de que
la mayoría de los votantes republicanos apoya darle la ciudadanía o la
legalización a los indocumentados,
según la última encuesta del New
York Times. Es decir, casi todos los
candidatos del partido republicano
no piensan como la mayoría de sus
votantes.
La resistencia es tal que el nuevo
líder de la cámara de representantes, el republicano Paul Ryan,
prometió bloquear cualquier plan
de legalización hasta el 2017. No
habrá ninguna reforma migratoria
bajo el presidente (Obama), le
dijo a la revista National Review.
Empieza mal Ryan. Eso no demuestra ninguna voluntad política
de resolver uno de los principales
problemas del país. Ryan, si quiere
tener éxito como un líder nacional,
tiene que alejarse de las ideas de
Donald Trump.
Sin embargo, tenemos que
reconocer que los primeros meses
de la campaña presidencial en
Estados Unidos estuvieron marcados por las alocadas, insultantes e
ignorantes declaraciones de Donald Trump sobre los inmigrantes.
Tendrá muchos millones pero no
entiende hacia dónde va este país.
Para el año 2055, los blancos, cuya
ayuda Trump necesita si espera
ganar la presidencia, serán una minoría más.
En 40 años todos seremos parte
de una minoría y el cambio ya se
siente. Sin latinos, no hay Casa
Blanca. Trump asegura que los his-

past or ancient history. We sometimes even refer to ourselves as
“Dinosaurs.”
Having grown up in the 50s
and 60s my contemporaries have
experienced a radical change in
lifestyle and skyrocketing prices
for the things we took for granted
“back in the day.”
Let me offer two examples.
Today when you go to the movies the tickets cost approximately
$7.50 per ticket. If you take someone with you, you are talking 15
dollars just to get in. Popcorn is
around 5 dollars a bucket; drinks
could cost three dollars each
which can add up to 25 or more
an outing.
If you are a senior citizen you
might get a dollar discount with
proof of age. Imagine having to
prove you are old for a dollar
discount. Back then you had to
prove you were younger than 12
to get a discount. Needless to say,
“I am a Baby Boomer!”
Second example is the current
price of taking the VIA bus. A one
way bus ticket downtown now is
over a dollar. When I attended
St. Gregory’s Catholic School in
the 50s in Balcones Heights, it
only cost 10 cents to take the bus
downtown to go see a movie. I
caught the bus four houses down
from my house off Vance Jackson. It was really very convenient
and cheap.
As a seventh and eighth grader
my mother would give me a dollar
to take the bus to go downtown
on a Saturday and spend the entire day going to one of the three
theatres at that time that included
the Majestic, the Texas and the
Empire.
I could take the VIA bus for 20
cents round trip, watch a double
feature for a quarter, buy popcorn
for less than 15 cents, a coca cola
for a nickel and come home at the
end of the day, sometimes with
a few cents in my pocket. Usually the double features included
at least one monster movie like
Dracula or Frankenstein horror
flick. Those were the days!
If I chose to hang out downtown after the movie I could walk
around the downtown streets with
panos lo aman. No es cierto. ¿Cómo
lo van a querer con tantos insultos?

Qué campaña tan rara con tantos
candidatos tan alejados de los votantes. Pero calma; todavía tenemos
todo un año. Los extremos casi
siempre se van, y las elecciones se
ganan con el voto de los que están
en el centro.
A cruzar los dedos. No. Mejor a
votar.

sit at the fountain and order a
tuna sandwich and drink with my
leftover money.

Drug Store were also options.
If I was just killing time, I
would wander up the street to
Joske’s affectionately referred
to as Saint Joske’s. We called it
that due to its close proximity to
Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church
around the corner on E. Commerce Street.
My Saturdays were exciting
as I took many a “field trip” by
myself or sometimes with one of
my younger brothers to the downtown area. Yep for me and many
of my generation, those were the
good old days. Now that I am into
senior status, perhaps I should be
referring to them as those “good
young days!!”
Anyway, as always, what I
write is “Just a Thought.”

Nuevas reglas de juego del debate

Ser peleonero no es una conducta
natural, no es algo que se hereda; es
un mal que se adquiere. La Cámara
de Representantes del Congreso es
la mejor escuela para convertirse en
una persona conflictiva.
A pesar de que algunos candidatos republicanos a la presidencia no
han puesto un pie en el Congreso,
su forma de conducirse ante la
sociedad norteamericana ha sido
muy similar a la de sus camaradas
de la Cámara Baja.
A uno de los candidatos le encanta insultar a la gente sin motivo,
mientras que otro no sabe distinguir
la verdad de la mentira. Otro, el más
pintoresco, se cree tan perfecto que
el ofrecimiento de una disculpa
resulta ser un insulto a esa supuesta
perfección.
Hoy, de momento, el enemigo de
los republicanos ya no es Hillary
Clinton, sino los medios de comu-
nicación. Como los moderadores
del último debate no les hicieron
preguntas adecuadas a sus intereses
y conveniencias, los candidatos
republicanos sienten que hay que
cambiar las reglas de juego.
De acuerdo al nuevo formato de
debates, los moderadores deberían
prometer no hacer uso de preguntas
espontaneas que, por alguna razón,
hagan relucir las debilidades del
candidato. Preguntas sobre el
machismo, la misoginia y el narcicismo de Donald Trump serían
invalidadas inmediatamente. Todas
las preguntas deberían ser revisadas
y aprobadas a priori por cada uno de
los candidatos republicanos.
Tampoco existirían preguntas
simples con una respuesta de Sí o
No. Tales preguntas como: “¿Está
de acuerdo con la doctrina militar
de George W. Bush?. Sí o No”,
sería caracterizado como inconducente. Este tipo de preguntas se
la hicieron alguna vez a la excandidata a la vicepresidencia Sarah
Palin. No supo que responder. “En
qué sentido se refiere”, murmuró.
Palin no supo que la doctrina
de Bush está relacionada con el
“ataque preventivo”.
Por otra parte, Ben Carson,
nuevo líder en las encuestas republicanas, sugirió que las reglas
deberían incluir una presentación
de cinco minutos de introducción
y cinco minutos de conclusión por
candidato. Es decir, los 13 estarían
utilizando 1:40 minutos en lo que
les peque la gana.
No sé hasta qué punto esta nueva
regla beneficiaría en la campaña de
los candidatos republicanos. Imagínense a Donald Trump hablando
de cuestiones políticas del país y
políticas internacionales durante
10 minutos cuando solo sabe decir
“huge”, “incredible”, “looser”,
“terrible”.
Asimismo, los candidatos no
quieren que se divulgue –antes de
ir a un descanso— el lugar donde
están ubicados los baños. Supongo

folks get nostalgic and
yearn for the
“good old
days.”
As one
Steve Walker who has recently survived a heart attack scare on my
sixty-ninth birthday no less, that
got my undivided attention. Not
what I had in mind for my birthday. That “incident” definitely
gives me a strong desire to return
to the good old days. Fortunately
the doctor gave me a clean bill
of health as far as my heart goes.
Unfortunately the neurosurgeon did not give me the same
prognosis. By the time this a
column goes to press I will have
undergone back surgery for a
herniated disc. I definitely have
a desire to relive the days of
yesteryear.
Those past memories of youth
are the good times when life
seemed easier and less complicated and much less expensive.
For some of us the good old

Farm Day at San Antonio
Missions National Historical Park will offer a Thanksgiving Camp

Join park staff and community
partners for Farm Day at Mission
San Juan, a free family-friendly
event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Spanish colonial missions
established in this area in the early 1700s were communities that
also included homes, workshops,
ranches, and farms, in addition
to the churches. Farm Day will
highlight the Spanish Colonial
demonstration farm at Mission
San Juan, located at 9101 Graf
Road in Southeast San Antonio.
A variety of activities will
be offered throughout the day.
Community partners will provide
activities for visitors of all ages.
Park rangers will lead guided
tours of the mission compound
and farm. The tours will take
visitors along portions of the
acequia system, the colonial irrigation system that brought water
from the San Antonio River to
the labores, or farm fields.
Guided walks will also provide
an opportunity to learn about native plants and the pollinators that
are important to crop production.
Local chefs from FreshPoint will
prepare traditional recipes using
nutritious, wholesome ingredients and visitors will receive all
of the ingredients to make the
demonstration recipe.
Longhorns and other farm
animals will be in the mission
corrals. Subaru Leave No Trace
trainers will encourage visitors
to protect the outdoors and to responsibly engage in recreational
activities.
Visitors are also encouraged
to use Farm Day as an excuse
to explore the park’s four mission sites, which were recently
designated a World Heritage
Site. It’s a great way to celebrate
the upcoming centennial of the
National Park Service.
To encourage people to discover everything a park experience can be, there is a fun list of
99 ways to Find Your Park. At
Farm Day you can: #3 – Be an
urban hiker, #68 – Walk nature’s
treadmill, or #75 – See history
from a different perspective.
You can share your park experiences with others by posting
on social media with the hashtag
#FindYourPark. Farm Day is

explore new skills and have a

The Thanksgiving Camps will
run Monday, Nov. 23, through
Wednesday, Nov. 25. Centers
are closed on Thanksgiving Day,
Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27.
Thanksgiving Camp hours are
7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The cost is $3 per participant
per day. Lunch and a snack are
provided through a partnership
with the San Antonio Food Bank.

La ceremonia “Un Saludo a los
Veteranos” que realiza anualmente
Fort Sam Houston será dedicada
este año a los veteranos de Vietnam, anunció en comunicado
de prensa la oficina de asuntos
públicos de US Army North.
La ceremonia se llevará a cabo
el viernes 13 de noviembre a las
11 a.m. en el McArthur Parade
Field.
“Este año estamos destacando
a los veteranos de Vietnam”,
afirmó la SGM Janine Osterberg,
jefe de operaciones de U.S. Army
North y principal organizadora de
la ceremonia.
“Además de brindar un reconocimiento especial a algunos
veteranos de Vietnam durante el
programa, el telón de fondo de la
ceremonia será la réplica al 80 por
ciento del ‘Muro de Vietnam’, lo

Cintura delgada mejorará tu salud

En una de las tres visitas
que cada semana realizo a un
concurrido y fino restaurante
oriental estilo bufete me causó
gran impacto ver a dos chicas
que se disponían a servirse
sus bocadillos favoritos en sus
respectivos platos. Una de ellas
con exceso de peso y la otra con
figura delgada, que denotaba con
seriedad su curvilínea cintura.
Las dos se sirvieron, primeramente, porciones iguales, sin
llenar sus platos. La chica excedida de peso ordenó para beber
una gaseosa (de dieta) y su compañera optó por pedir agua con
poco hielo, agregándole unas
rebanadas de limón (verde).
Por mi parte, como regularmente comienzo la cena añadí
trozos de fruta, arroz blanco
de base con pedazos de pollo
con brócoli por encima, unos
cuantos camarones al vapor con
verduras. De tomar no necesité
ordenar, ya que la mesera sabe
que siempre tomo un vaso mediano con Pepsi-Cola de dieta y
sin hielo.
Les diré a mis tres lectores que
nunca fue mi intención juzgar la
actitud de las dos chicas comensales, sino que fue mi mente la
que me enfocó en fijarme en ambas chicas, guardando distancia
sin quitar la vista en los momentos que ambas se disponían a
elegir sus bocadillos preferidos,
ya que en un establecimiento
de esta categoría el cliente se
puede dar el lujo de comer de
todo. Unos lo hacemos con medida para no castigar el sistema
digestivo, otros (as) lo hacen
para satisfacer plenamente su
“apetito” aumentando porciones
alimenticias, que prácticamente
como consecuencia les hace
ganar peso.
Ese escenario me dio “material” para buscar alguna información que me lleve a buscarle
solución al problema de la obesidad que, de acuerdo al comité de
salud mundial, conduce en acortarle la vida a quienes padecen
de sobrepeso.
También encontré más información al respecto en la
revista mensual que edita la
organización sin fines de lucro
AARP (American Association
of Retired Persons), que sirve
a una membresía de 50 años de
edad y mayores.
En una de sus secciones de
salud de su edición de octubre,
en breve artículo, la revista hace
la comparación en gráfica entre
una manzana y una pera. Y le
indica al lector que personas con
cintura de manzana son más propensas a sufrir paros cardiacos
que las que lucen una cintura en
forma de pera.
Para reducir peso y perder la
forma de manzana se recomienda que quienes son obesos deben
de comenzar algún programa
o plan de ejercicios, así como
encausarse en la reducción de
porciones alimenticias.
A quienes tienen cintura en
forma de pera también se les
recomienda que no quiten el
dedo del renglón, realizando
sus actividades cotidianas, entre
ellas seguir adelante en su plan
alimenticio y ejercicio físico.
Su servidor, quien en algunos
años tuvo exceso de peso luciendo barriga de tomador por el
desmedido consumo de bebidas
embriagantes y platillos grasos
acompañados de las tradicionales tortillas de harina, tras 15
años de sobriedad se ha puesto
actualmente entre las 190 y 195
libras de peso. Así dejé atrás
la pérdida de 50 libras, gracias
a los regaños de mamá, quien
tuvo que venir desde el sur de
California para darme una buena
regañada por mi vicio y el exceso
de peso.
“Mijo cuando estabas allá en
California no estabas tan panzón,
mira nomás como te ves, ya
hasta usas pantalones guangos y
de más cintura. No la amueles,
ponte a rebajar, hazlo por tu hijo
y esposa, ellos te necesitan. No
quiero que por tu irresponsabilidad te vayan a llevar al hospital
porque te haya dado un ataque al
corazón”. Así con esas palabras
mi progenitora me vino a dar
tremenda regañada.
Pregúntenme si le hice caso
(eso fue en el año 1995). Pasaron
los años y por obra del destino
en 1999 un celoso y cumplido
agente del orden paró mi carrera
de tomador y conductor bajo el
estado de ebriedad, lo cual para
mi entonces era regular, tanto en
California como aquí en el estado
de la estrella solitaria, a pesar que
ambas entidades tienen drásticas
leyes que castigan severamente
a quienes son arrestados bajo la
influencia del DWI.

con extenso programa de rehabilitación, mi destino cambió
por igual mi cuerpo, ya que mi
doctor tuvo que ponerme al tanto
sobre los beneficios de mantenerse en el peso correspondiente
a la estatura del individuo.
Han pasado 15 años y he logrado cumplir con la orden de
la corte y de mi doctor, por lo
que mi dieta diaria es la misma:
desayuno saludable, cena sin
productos grasos y obviamente
la bendición del Creador Divino y mi Santo (San Ignacio de
Loyola), en quienes siempre he
tenido fe y me han dado la oportunidad de alargar mi existencia
(en julio 31 de 2015 cumplí 60
años).
La verdad para mí es que
nunca pensé ni llegué pedirle a
Dios alargar mi existencia.
En como traté mi cuerpo por
más de 30 años no me daba ninguna idea de poder sobrevivir
tantos años.
A la fecha, como lo he escrito anteriormente, nunca he
ingresado a una sala de emergencia o de hospital. Aunque
he sufrido ataques en mi físico
por cuestiones de mi profesión
y otras porque me he defendido
de ataques personales y, varias
veces en peleas de cantina. Esas
heridas las logré curar con plantas medicinales y con tragos de
un “buen licor”. Desde mi punto
de vista para hacer ejercicio diario no necesariamente tenemos
que acudir o ser miembros de
algún gimnasio privado.
El plan de disciplina deportiva
para ejercitar el físico se puede
realizar en casa, ya sea en el interior o el exterior. También acudiendo a los renovados parques
que cuentan con caminos pavimentados y áreas para ejercitarse
al aire libre.

Padres hispanos con estrés son doblemente
propensos a tener hijos obesos
EFEUSA - Los padres latinos
con alto nivel de estrés crónico
son dos veces más propensos
a criar niños obesos, reveló un
estudio anunciado.
La investigación del Colegio
de Medicina Albert Einstein
de Nueva York será presentada
mañana en la Reunión Anual de
la Sociedad de Obesidad en Los
Ángeles, California.
“Ambos, la obesidad y el estrés
crónico fueron prevalentes entre
la población latina con más de
un cuarto (28 %) de los niños
de edades entre 8 y 16 años con
obesidad y cerca de un tercio
(29 %) de sus padres formando
altos niveles de estrés”, anotó la
doctora Carmen Isasi, directora
de investigación del proyecto.
El estudio, catalogado “entre
los primeros de su tipo en mostrar
que el estrés de los padres es un
factor de riesgo para la obesidad
infantil entre los latinos”, ayuda
a entender las influencias familiares en el sobrepeso de los menores, según destacó Isasi.
La investigación analizó datos
de indicadores de peso y estrés
recopilados por el Estudio de la
Juventud Latina (SOL Youth) de
grandes comunidades hispanas
que residen en las ciudades de
Nueva York (Bronx), Chicago
(Illinois), Miami (Florida) y San
Diego (California).
Al relacionar la información,
los investigadores encontraron
que la obesidad entre hijos de
padres con bajo estrés era de 20
% mientras se duplicaba cuando
los padres presentaban tres o más
factores de estrés crónico.
“Esta investigación debe es-
timular a los profesionales de las
clínicas y los centros de salud
a considerar los altos niveles
de estrés como un signo de advertencia para el desarrollo de
la obesidad no solamente en el
paciente adulto sino en toda la familia”, aseguró Margarita Terán
García, miembro de la Sociedad
de Obesidad.
Entre los factores de estrés
más frecuentes entre los padres
latinos figuraron las dificultades
en el trabajo, los problemas en
sus relaciones y las angustias
financieras entre otros.
El análisis recomendó realizar
nuevas investigaciones para buscar las causas y para desarrollar
estrategias de prevención que
permitan enfrentar la correlación
entre el estrés paterno y la obesidad de los hijos.

10 facts about diabetes
you need to know

I am not a diabetes doctor,
but I see many patients in my
surgical practice where diabetes
and eating habits have contributed to their problem. I am also
pre-diabetic. These facts were
obtained from the Joslin Diabetes Center website, a product of
Harvard Medical School:
1. El diabetes no duele. Diabetes does not hurt. Most people
with type 2 diabetes, the most
common type, have no symptoms. Just because you feel fine
doesn’t mean you do not have it.
2. About 1/3 of people with
diabetes do not know they have
it. Usually simple blood tests
will be enough to diagnose you;
if you do not go to the doctor,
they can’t test you. Don’t doctor yourself!
3. One close relative with
diabetes makes it four times
more likely you will get diabetes; two relatives with diabetes
makes you eight times more
likely to get diabetes. This is
true whether you are tall, short,
overweight, skinny, bald, redheaded, whatever. Get checked!
Again, you may feel fine, but
if you are at risk, you need to
be checked every year by your
doctor.
4. Diabetes is not caused by
eating too much sugar. For
most people, it’s not what we
eat, but how much. Five tortillas to scoop up those wonderful
frijolitos are delicious, but one
tortilla is a better choice. Use
a fork for the rest.
5. Meals for diabetics are not
much different from what the
rest of us are supposed to eat.
Diabetic meals include vegetables, have less fat, and are
smaller portions. We all know
that’s how we are supposed to
eat, we just do not.
6. High triglycerides, a type
of fat in the blood, and high
blood pressure gives you a
higher chance of getting diabe-
tes. These combined with low
HDL (good) cholesterol and
obesity are known as metabolic
syndrome, which increases risk
of heart disease.
7. People with diabetes are
twice as likely to get heart
disease
8. Diabetes is the leading
cause of blindness in working
age adults. This is from years
of uncontrolled diabetes. If
you don’t know you have it,
you can’t control it. See your
doctor!
9. Weight loss surgery can
significantly reduce the symptoms of diabetes. Talk to one
of our South Side weight loss
surgeons, Dr. Rene Jaso, to see
if this is the right choice for you.
10. If you are at risk, diabetes
can be prevented with moderate
weight loss (10-15 lbs) and 30
minutes of moderate exercise
every day. Being at work all
day does not count as exercise.
If it did, all of us would be
skinny.

of Wernicke encephalopathy.
• Korsakoff syndrome and its
associated thiamine deficiency is
not the only mechanism through
which heavy drinking may contribute to chronic thinking changes and cognitive decline.
• Alcohol misuse may also
lead to brain damage through
the direct toxic effects of alcohol on brain cells; the biological
stress of repeated intoxication
and withdrawal; alcohol-related
cerebrovascular disease; and
head injuries from falls sustained
when inebriated.
The dementia/syndrome
• Is often associated with severe alcoholism, but may also
arise from malnutrition or digestive problems.
• Alcoholics tend to eat few
foods that contain vitamin B-1,
absorb and utilize the vitamin
poorly, and require larger than
normal amounts of it.
• Causes memory and judgment problems, and other neurological symptoms.
• The brain lesions that occur
may be reversible if the condition
is treated promptly and alcohol
consumption ceases, but permanent memory loss can occur.
Symptoms
• Confusion (Wernicke encephalopathy)
• Staggering (Wernicke encephalopathy)
• Abnormal involuntary eye
movements (Wernicke encepha-
lopathy)
• Severe memory problems
with confabulation (making
things up they can’t remember)
• Poor judgment
• Fatigue
• Irritation
• Difficulty sleeping
• Impaired movement and
unsteadiness
• Chest pain
• Abdominal discomfort
• Poor appetite
• Constipation
Treatment
• In mild cases, vitamin B-1 is
given orally.
• In severe cases, vitamin B-1
is given intravenously.
• Affected individuals need
to maintain a balanced diet and
discontinue use of alcohol.
• If untreated, the condition
leads to coma and death.

Fandom Expands
Last Wednesday, the City of
San Antonio and Bexar County
announced the purchase of Toyota
Field.
Toyota Field currently hosts the
San Antonio Scorpions soccer team.
The city has teamed up with Spurs
Sports and Entertainment in an effort to make the possibility of San
Antonio finally having its very own
Major League Soccer (MLS) team.
MLS is still unsure when league
expansion will take place but somewhere in the near future, San Antonio could have its third professional
sports team
This news opens the door to so
many possibilities. An MLS team
could pave the way for other professional sports to make San Antonio
their home.
The Missions Baseball Team
and Rampage Hockey Team are
already minor league teams. With
an MLS team, even they could be
the seeds for professional teams in
the Alamo City.
If our love of sports shines through
in an MLS team, we may very well
have a team in the National Football
League if the future of the Oakland
Raiders gets even more tenuous.
Although Dallas Cowboys owner
Jerry Jones has the power to shut that
approval down to keep his money
and fans, this could be big enough
that he couldn’t stop the voting for
a new team.
When the Spurs play on national
television, as a city we show how
much we love that team and how can
come together as one. We love our
sports teams, and we have passion
for them like no other city. We don’t
have enough professional teams to
nationally showcase our love of
sports. This is our time.
Although I was born in San Diego
and moved here when I was five
years old, I grew up here. Over the
past 15 years, I’ve seen what San
Antonio is. Yeah we have Fiesta
Texas, the Alamodome, and the
Alamo but that’s not only what it
has to show for itself.
The biggest thing I’ve seen in San
Antonio and was has always been so
apparent was the city’s passion. San
Antonio has so much passion. During Fiesta, the city comes together
and celebrates during the parades
and when the Spurs win championship, we celebrate like there’s no
tomorrow. Our passion and love
of everything that represents San
Antonio is what makes us…well,
frankly San Antonio.
It’s time to show what kind of fans
the city has to offer to all of America’s professional sports leagues.

San Antonio takes the next step to attracting an MLS team

Clemson tops college football poll
San Antonio announced this
past Wednesday they are in pursuit of an Major League Soccer
team the same day they lost a bid
on hosting the College Football
Championship game.
The news conference advised
that the City and County purchased Toyota Field from owner
Gordon Hartman for $18 million.
Spurs Sports and Entertainment
threw in $3 million of their funds
as well.
Hartman is still the owner of
the Scorpions who play in the
North American Soccer League
(NASL), however, Nelson Wolff
indicated that the team will be on
the move to different league soon.
The County Judge suggested
a move to the United Soccer
League (USL) is most likely.
“They might very will be playing in the United Soccer league,”
Wolff said.
Although the Toyota Field is
publicly owned, Spurs, Sports
and Entertainment will lease the
facility for the next 20 years.
The Spurs will have a 13-year
time frame to bring a MLS team
to the city.
If the Spurs do not accomplish
the task within this period, they
will have to pay the public $5
million.
However, before any of this
can commence, Bexar County
Commissioners and the city have
to vote to approve it.
The stadium seats 8,000 but
the field contains pillars that can
expand the attendance to over
18,000.
The MLS currently has 20
teams, and is in the process of
adding four teams.
Earlier this year MLS commissioner Don Garber announced
that officials “plan to evaluate
potential expansion beyond 24
clubs.”
Orlando, Florida received an
MLS franchise back in 2013 and
played their first game in March
of this year.
Atlanta was granted a team and
is expected to play in 2017.
Miami is a front-runner to
launch a team with the help of
soccer legend David Beckham.
With the help of the San Antonio Spurs, Mayor Ivy Taylor believes that the city has established
itself as front-runner into landing
an MLS Franchise.
“San Antonio is serious about
its pursuit of Major League Soccer and this deal takes us a step
closer to bringing it here,” Mayor
Taylor said in a statement. “Fans
may have to wait a few more
years, but soccer has an international appeal and is a perfect fit
for our city’s global outlook and
economic strategy.”
The MLS recognized and applauded the city’s efforts to joining the league.

expansion plans are finalized.”
While the city made a great deal
of progress they still have many
obstacles ahead.
Toyota Field will need a facelift
which will cost approximately
$35 to $45 million. The Spurs will
also have to raise $100 million in
order to join league.
Nonetheless, the possibility that
San Antonio will have its own
Major League Soccer franchise in
the next few years are favorable.

St. Mary’s Women’s soccer places 3 on
CoSIDA academic All-District Team

As St. Mary’s Women’s Soccer
gears up for another postseason
run, the squad is once again being recognized for its tremendous
work in the classroom.
Midfielder Brittney Lacek (Sr.,
Gillette, Wyo.), defender Kaitlyn
Judge (So., Frenship, Texas) and
forward Kristal Williams (Jr., Ponder, Texas) all have been named
to the CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict Team, it was announced
recently.
The trio represents the most
selections to the academic team
St. Mary’s has ever had in a single
season, and gives the Rattlers a
total of eight honorees dating back
to 2011.
Lacek, a biomedical engineering major, has maintained a 3.75
GPA at St. Mary’s. On the field,
she leads the Rattlers (10-5) with
seven assists to go along with two

goals. Her 11 points rank third on
the team.
Judge, an exercise and sport
science major with a 3.79 GPA,
ranks No. 2 on the team in assists
with six – a rare number for a
defender. She also ranks fourth
on the squad with 1,118 minutes
played this season.
Williams, who has maintained
3.93 GPA while studying biology,
is tied for the team lead in goals
with seven and leads all Rattlers
with 15 points on the season. She
has taken 28 shots on the season,
with over 60 percent being on goal.
The academic all-district team,
which is voted on by sports information directors from around the
nation, requires student-athletes to
maintain at least 3.30 cumulative
grade – point average and be a
significant contributor to her team.
St. Mary’s tied for the most
selections (three) of any Division
II school in District 6. Lubbock
Christian also placed three on the
team. In all, the Heartland Conference had seven representatives
make the squad.

Pastenes took top honors at the
North America Tree Climbing
Competition in Longmont, Colorado, crowning him the top tree
climber in North America.
The International Society of
Arboriculture hosts the two-day
North American Tree Climbing
Competition honoring climbing
professionals within the tree care
industry. Top ranking climbers
from Canada, Mexico and the U.S.
compete and challenge their own
physical and mental aptitudes for
climbing safely and effectively.
The event is focused on safety
and is designed to assess the
climbers’ abilities as they ascend
ropes and climb to different points
designated throughout a tree,
performing a variety of work-andrescue-simulations along the way.
At times these challenges are as
high up as 100 feet.
One challenge focuses on the
climber’s ability to ascend a 50
foot rope in a timed event. The
“work climb” demonstrates a
climber’s skill, balance and coordination. The “aerial rescue”
challenges a climber’s ability to
rescue a worker stranded 30 feet
up, injured perhaps by a run-in
with a live electrical wire or chainsaw accident.
This year’s elite group of climbers included 37 male and six
female tree climbers from across
North America. The top ranking
climbers, including Pastenes, advanced to the Masters Challenge
final round to compete for the title

campeonato. Fue un cobarde completo. No tengo nada más que decir.

Los inspectores de la NASCAR
citaron a Kenseth, al jefe de Equipo,
Jason Ratcliff, y al dueño del equipo,
Joe Gibbs, con quienes sostuvieron
pláticas en el centro de operaciones
al finalizar la carrera.
Steve O’Donnell, el vicepresidente de competencia y desarrollo
de la NASCAR, dijo que el incidente
será analizado y se aplicará acciones
en caso de ser necesario.
El drama entre Kenseth y Logano
no fue suficiente para opacar la
celebración de Gordon, el primero
de cuatro pilotos con un puesto para
luchar por el campeonato en la
Championship Round en Homestead.
“Nos vemos en Homestead”, dijo
Gordon, cuando estaba celebrando
en Victory Lane, tras terminar con
ventaja de .335 segundos por
delante de McMurray. “Es algo
grande. Enorme. Los amo. De esto
es de lo que veníamos hablando.
Vamos a seguir peleando”.
Al momento Gordon no pudo evitar una broma. “Todo fue un chiste,
voy a volver el próximo año”, dijo
Gordon, sobre su eminente retiro.

Una de las escalas fue con Hendrick y ahí hablé un poco con Jeff
Gordon. Fue algo espectacular y
yo estaba un poco impresionado,
porque era…Jeff Gordon y hasta ese
momento, yo no había conocido a
nadie famoso.
Desde que estoy compitiendo
en la serie de Sprint Cup él me ha
dado muchos consejos sobre cómo
enfrentar desafíos sobre la pista, y
en mi vida personal, así como en
los negocios, todo lo cual me ha
ayudado mucho. Abriéndome los
ojos en muchas decisiones.
Recientemente he estado más
cerca de él (Gordon) fuera de la
NASCAR porque él patrocina
algunas carreras de sprint cars para
nuestro equipo – Larson Marks
Racing and Shane Stewart–, y ha
viajado a Knoxville (Iowa) para la
competencia nacional en Knoxville,
donde nos divertimos mucho.
Fuera de la oficina, Gordon es
como un niño que le gusta divertirse, así que ha sido muy bueno
conocerlo más de cerca fuera de
las pistas.
El año próximo (tras su retiro) no
creo que cambien mucho las cosas.
El auto No. 24 estará ahí con Chase
Elliott, y quizá vamos a ver más de
Jeff Gordon, ya que va a estar en la
televisión mucho (narrando en la cabina de FOX Sports). Él le ha dado
mucho a nuestro deporte y estoy

“The competition requires a
great deal of training and education as it tests a tree climber’s
strength, agility, balance and ability to use various climbing and
rope techniques,” said Pastenes.
Creo que supe sobre Jeff cuando
yo era muy joven y no había empezado a correr, tenía cuatro, cinco o
seis años. Recuerdo que mis padres
me contaron sobre un chico que
creció en Vallejo, California, y
que había corrido en las mismas
pistas a donde me llevaban como
espectadore.
No olvido los viajes en auto
del norte al sur en la Costa Oeste.
Poníamos un cassette VHS en el que
mis padres habían grabado todos los
episodios del programa televisivo
“Thursday Night Thunder” y Jeff
aparecía en algunos segmentos.
Quizá ese fue el primer contacto que
me hizo fan de Jeff Gordon.
Después, obviamente, empecé a
seguir la NASCAR de cerca y me di
cuenta que él abrió las puertas para
muchos otros pilotos entre ellos de
calidad internacional. Siempre he
sido su fanático y es fantástico ver
todo lo que ha hecho por nuestro
deporte. Obviamente es más espectacular poder estar compitiendo
contra él ahora.
Probablemente lo conocí en
persona cuando todavía era muy
joven. Mi mamá tiene una foto por
ahí, creo que es del final de 2011.

el Torneo de Thanksgiving, evento
deportivo de corte internacional en
el que contarán con el respaldo del
señor Eloy Rocha, directivo del
Torneo Liga Dominical Potranco.
El mencionado evento beisbolero
será durante el sábado 28 y domingo
29 de noviembre en el estadio Coach
Arthur Bain Diamond, ubicado en
el Rusty Lyons Sports Complex

Day with a Mass at San Fernando
Cemetery No. 2 on Nov. 2, and
began by acknowledging that
death - like life itself - is a great
mystery.
“Whether a loved one has died
suddenly or after a long, lingering illness, we are never quite
prepared for that moment; but we
begin to realize that our lives are
forever changed by the departure
of our beloved family and friends.
Meanwhile we walk in faith,” the
archbishop said in his homily.
He continued, “For people
without faith, death appears as an
ending, utter destruction, meaningless. For people of faith, death
is only a passage into eternity. It
is a new beginning.”
Archbishop Gustavo quoted
Wisdom 3:1-9: “The souls of the
just are in the hand of God… they
are in peace. The faithful shall
abide with him in love.”
The archbishop explained that
these words allow the faithful
to continue our lives and honor
our ancestors by the faithful way
we live our lives. However, he
added, those who have died live
on, not just in our memory, but in
la memoria - a mystery through
which the person continues to
be alive.
“When we gather around the
altar for the Eucharist, we are
truly united with all those who
have gone before us. This is a
great, wondrous mystery, but
we believe this with our whole
mind, heart, and imagination.
We are a community of faith!”
he exclaimed.
The San Antonio prelate emphasized that listeners remember
and pray for those who have
died among families and friends
-- those who were holy and those
who, perhaps, were sinners.
The Missionary of the Holy
Spirit then asked for prayers for
those in purgatory, to rejoice with
those who are in heaven, and recognize the Lord is our shepherd.
“Let us draw near to the Good
Shepherd because he alone can
guide us along the way that leads
to eternal life,” Archbishop Gustavo concluded. “He is the only
one who can nourish the deepest
hungers of our hearts. He is the
source of our hope for the future.
He wants to walk with us, to accompany us on our pilgrim way
that leads to eternal life.”
The archbishop closed by praying, “May Our Lady, la Morenita,
be with us today as she is with
our departed family and friends
- embracing us with the love of
God’s own mother.”

no guarda rencor”. Cuando contemple un nuevo noviazgo, le recomendamos que se valga de esa
descripción como la medida para
determinar si lo que usted siente
es amor para toda la vida y si el
amor de su futura novia cumple
con esos mismos requisitos”.

Pope Francis on Tuesday celebrated Mass in St Peter’s Basilica
for all the cardinals and bishops
who have died over the past year.
Recalling with gratitude the vocation of those Church leaders,
the Pope noted that the principle
task of all ordained ministers is
that of service to others.
Pope Francis said just as Jesus
knelt to wash the feet of his closest disciples, so he calls all his
ministers today to renew their

serve and not to be served, the
Pope insisted, so his ministers
are called in turn to be pastors,
ready to give their lives for their
flock. In the eyes of this world,
he said, those who serve are seen
as losers: but in reality it is those
who give their lives and lose
themselves in the love of Christ
who will overcome death and
give life to the world.
Pope Francis recalled the
words of Jesus that “God so
loved the world” that he sent his
Son as a servant to take on our
sins and to save us from death by
dying for us. Just as the Israelites
were saved from death, after being bitten by poisonous snakes,
by looking at the bronze snake
that Moses held up on a pole,
so Christ saves us from death
through his death on the Cross.
To our eyes, death seems dark
and fearful, just as those who
died from snake bites in the
desert were full of fear and suffering. Yet Jesus took fully upon
himself all these contradictions,
the Pope said, so that “whoever
believes in the Son has eternal
life”.
This style of service and humility, he continued, has much to
teach us. Though we find it hard
to accept this mystery, he said,
the secret lies in the strength of
God’s love for us.
Through the mystery of Easter,
Jesus not only conquered death
but transformed evil into good –
not through words, but deeds, not
on the surface but at the root. He
has transformed the Cross into a
bridge towards life and we can
do the same if we choose to follow his example of service and
humility.

La Prensa de San Antonio More than $2.7 million in federal grants
will support affordable housing in S.A.

Congressmen Joaquin Castro
(TX-20), Henry Cuellar (TX-28),
and Lloyd Doggett (TX-35) announced $2,779,683 in federal
grants from the U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support affordable housing in San Antonio.
Bexar County will receive the
funding through the Community
Development Block Grants program, the Emergency Solutions
Grants program, and the HOME
program.
“Having an affordable place
to live gives folks stability and
security that help them pursue
their dreams,” said Rep. Castro.
“Bexar County will be able to
move more homeless families
off the streets and increase the
opportunities for individuals of
all income levels to find safe,
affordable housing options in our
city. By ensuring San Antonians
don’t slip through the cracks,
we’ll better be able to maximize
our city’s potential. With these
grants and the housing they
support, HUD is helping lay the
foundation of opportunity for
so many individuals in Bexar
County.”
“I am pleased to learn about
the new money available in
federal grants for affordable
housing through the Community
Development Block Grants program in San Antonio,” Congressman Cuellar said. “Affordable
housing gives many people the
opportunity to secure a safe and
quality place to live as they build
their lives.”

a roof over their heads, it offers a

The Community Development
Block Grants program provides
annual grants to states and local
governments to develop viable
urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by
expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and
moderate-income persons.
The HOME program helps
to expand the supply of decent,
affordable housing to low- and
very low-income families by
providing grants to states and local governments to fund housing
programs that meet local needs
and priorities.
The Emergency Solutions
Grants program provides funding
to engage homeless individuals
and families living on the street;
improve the number, quality and
operations of emergency shelters
for homeless individuals and
families; and provide essential
services to shelter residents,
rapidly re-house homeless individuals and families, and prevent families/individuals from
becoming homeless.

traditions, Diwali San Antonio
Festival of Lights (Diwali), will
be celebrated on Saturday, Nov.
14, 2015 at La Villita from 5 to
11 p.m.
Diwali, co-hosted by the City
of San Antonio and Anuja San
Antonio, our sister city of Chennai’s local nonprofit organization, features traditional Indian
dance, entertainment, food and
crafts.
Some of the highlights of this
free, family-friendly celebration include a fireworks show;
the releasing of lighted candles,
known as diyas, into the San Antonio River at the Arneson River
Theatre; and a colorful showcase
of India’s various states called
The Parade of States.
Diwali is the biggest and
brightest festival in India that
historically celebrates the victory of good over evil. Since its
inception in 2009, its San Antonio spin-off has grown to become the largest city-sanctioned
Diwali in the U.S., attracting
approximately 15,000 attendees
to the event.
“Diwali San Antonio has become an essential part of how
our city celebrates and embraces
its cultural and ethnic diversity,”
said Mayor Ivy R. Taylor, who
will provide opening remarks
at the event. “The City of San
Antonio looks forward each year
to co-hosting this special night,
which also is a celebration of
our sister city relationship with
Chennai.”
As the only major festivity
showcasing Indian culture in San
Antonio, Diwali plays an important role in the City’s efforts to

Hurd Partners with Google to
Help Small Businesses in SA

announced recently that he has
partnered with representatives
from Google to host free tech
workshops for Texas entrepreneurs and small business owners
in San Antonio on November 9.
Hurd’s workshops are part of
Google’s “Let’s Put Our Cities on
the Map” program aimed at providing businesses across the U.S.
with an online presence. Google
experts will help small business
owners create their own websites
and Google listings for free.
Participating businesses will receive a customized domain name,
free web hosting for one year, a
local business listing on Google
Maps, free tools, training and resources. Google experts will be on
hand to train the business owners
on how to reach more customers
and get discovered online.
“Over 2.3 million small businesses in Texas employ about half
of the state’s private workforce
and make up over 98 percent of
all employers in the state. These
businesses are the lifeblood of our
economy, and in an increasingly
digital world it is vital that entrepreneurs and small businesses

escena una celebración de Día de
los Muertos. Uno de los números
del programa fue la actuación de
Faisán Folkloric Ballet, que dirige
Jorge Gaxiola. En esta ocasión el
grupo de danza vistió atuendos
acordes a esta festividad luciendo
vividos colores y creativas máscaras o maquillajes.

El capitán y alero estelar de los Spurs Tim Duncan (nativo de St. Croix, Islas Vírgenes) en el partido local (AT&T Center), apertura de
la temporada 2015-16 NBA, recibió reconocimiento y el trofeo 2014-15 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award por ser ejemplar
compañero de equipo. Duncan obtuvo la mayoría de votos de un selecto grupo de leyendas de la NBA que eligieron a seis jugadores
de cada conferencia (Oeste y Este), sumándose cerca de 300 jugadores activos, quienes secretamente votaron. Duncan recibió 72 votos
en primer lugar, 59 en segundo, 44 tercero, 40 cuarto y 21 en quinto, sumando 1,494 puntos. En segundo lugar finalizó el guardia y

El público de la región esperó
impacientemente por cinco años
para ver nuevamente un ballet
supersónico de destreza y valor en
el cielo de San Antonio con los interceptores USAF Thunderbirds.
En un cielo semi nublado, con
estruendo, la escuadrilla de interceptores F-16 Fighting Falcon
realizaron acrobacias de precisión
extraordinaria que presupone gran
dedicación y entrenamiento para
los pilotos.
El sábado 31 de octubre y domingo 1 de noviembre la larga
espera por esta exhibición fue
compensada ampliamente con
las peligrosas maniobras de los
Thunderbirds.
Después del festival aéreo en la
base aérea Randolph, la próxima
parada de los Thunderbirds será
en Moody Air Force Base, en
Georgia, para así completar el
programa de demostraciones
del año 2015 que comprende 71
festivales en 39 ciudades de los
Estados Unidos.

Butch Blache to discuss what
to expect this season.
Chef Blache was born in
Texas and raised in California;
he has been in the culinary
world since the age of 15. After
graduating from New Mexico
State University with a degree
in philosophy and jazz, he decided to trade in the books for
an apron.
“I put myself through school
with cooking. My uncle was a
chef and I grew up in the indus-
try, but I was not supposed to
become a chef. I was supposed
to stay as far away as possible
and be more studious, but it just
happened that way,” said Chef
Blache.
Now leading the Max’s Wine
Dive kitchen, chef Blache brings
his experience with food and
cooking, renowned industry
knowledge and flair for creativity to the team. His culinary
“sweet” spots are found in the
Southern, Southwestern and
Italian cuisines.

“I hope the restaurant is
known for the delicious menu,
from the fried chicken to wine,
and those items just surprise
customers. I would love to see a
line at the door and people know
about us,” said Chef Blache.
“Those places, in my opinion,
have special niches in people’s
minds; and our goal is to make
guests enjoy the place in a sense
beyond the food and would like
to meet up for simple occasions.”

Don Francisco llega a la pantalla grande con “The 33”

Fue el 5 de agosto del 2010
cuando la noticia de los 33 mineros que quedaron atrapados tras
el colapso de la mina San José,
en Chile, conmocionó al mundo.
Fue una historia llena de angustia y miedo, pero también
de esperanza y supervivencia
cuando días después, a través
de un papel, confirmaron que se
encontraban con vida.
Los mineros estuvieron sepultados a 700 metros de profundidad y tuvieron que hacer lo que
fuera para sobrevivir hasta que
por fin pudieron ser rescatados
69 días después, un hecho que
llenó los titulares de radio, prensa
y televisión en los principales
medios de comunicación y fue
celebrado por todo el mundo.
¿Pero qué fue lo que ocurrió
bajo tierra durante esos 69 días?
Esa es la historia que muchos
no conocen y que ahora podrán
descubrir cuando la película “The
33” llegue a los cines el próximo
viernes 13 de noviembre.
La cinta, dirigida por la mexicana Patricia Riggen, llevará al
espectador por un viaje a lo profundo de la mina y revelará los
momentos más íntimos y difíciles
que los mineros tuvieron que
vivir para luchar por sus vidas.
“Los 33” cuenta con una participación especial del querido
presentador chileno de televisión
Mario Kreutzberger, mejor conocido como Don Francisco, y La
Prensa tuvo la oportunidad de
conversar con él, quien expresó
sentirse muy orgulloso de la
película.
“A mí me parece que la historia
de los 33 es muy impactante”,
comentó Don Francisco. “Fueron
rescatados todos con vida a través
de una cápsula inventada y que se
haya podido hacer la perforación
del tamaño que se hizo en un
tiempo récord, creo es más que
suficiente para tratar esto como
una hazaña mundial”.
Al enterarse del derrumbe de
la mina, Don Francisco tomó
un vuelo de Miami a Chile pocas horas después para apoyar
y cubrir periodísticamente la
tragedia.
“Me pareció una noticia muy
penosa. Después de ver lo que
decían los diarios, pensé que yo
debería de participar”, destacó
Don Francisco. “Fui como dos
o tres veces a la mina y al final,
lo que encontré es lo que hago
en el papel”.
Don Francisco fue invitado
por la directora a participar en
la película, en donde no encarnó
algún papel, sino que interpretó a
él mismo mostrando la cobertura
periodística que realizó; además
de ser el único del elenco que
habla en español.
La actuación especial del presentador recreará esos momentos
de incertidumbre que se vivieron
en el campamento Esperanza,
que fue levantado en el desierto
por familiares de los mineros
para conocer de cerca las labores
del riesgoso rescate.
“El ambiente fue cambiando
porque al principio había mucha
inquietud porque los familiares
no sabían si estaban vivos, si no
estaban vivos consideraban que
el gobierno no estaba haciendo
suficiente, se peleaban entre todos, golpeaban las puertas de la
mina y gritaban”, recordó Don
Francisco.
“Después se empezaron a
calmar hasta que finalmente a

“The 33” narra esta dramática
historia y promete contar una
historia extraordinaria de cómo
los 33 mineros, necesitando más
que alimentos y fuerza física,
lograron sobrevivir y reunirse
con sus familias.
“Es una epopeya, un caso
único en la historia de la humanidad. Además, es la manera
en que se puede contar porque
toda la gente que lo vio, que eran
unos 2 mil millones de personas,
vieron y conocieron el accidente
y supieron del rescate. Lo que
nadie supo era cómo habían sido
esos 69 días y entonces eso es lo
que muestra la película. ¡Vayan a
verla en el debut!”, invitó.
Este es el próximo proyecto del
presentador, quien recientemente
se despidió del exitoso programa
“Sábado Gigante” en septiembre

José Luis Orozco promueve alimentación saludable en nuevo álbum

Por los últimos 45 años, el reconocido cantautor de música infantil
José Luis Orozco ha entretenido
y educado a miles de pequeños en
inglés y en español con sus ritmos
latinos y música alegre.
Su último álbum ¡Come Bien!
Eat Right! no solo promueve el
bilingüismo, sino también la importancia de comer saludable y
mantenerse activo.
El álbum, lanzado el pasado 18
de septiembre, es una colección
de 19 canciones en español y 19
canciones en inglés.
“En total son 38 mensajes sobre
la buena alimentación”, explicó
Orozco a La Prensa. “Es un mensaje muy importante que ahorita
necesitamos”.
El cantante enfatizó que últimamente ha observado un gran
problema de obesidad y diabetes
en temprana edad nacionalmente.
“Los alimentos de hoy en día
no son los mismos de hace 30 o
40 años”, expresó Orozco. “Mi
bisabuelo vivió hasta los 109
años y ahora la gente ya no está
viviendo tantos años debido a los
alimentos”.
Es por esto que el álbum anima a
los niños a que coman fruta fresca,
vegetales frescos y que tomen agua
en vez de bebidas alteradas con
color y azúcar.
“Todas las comidas que son
procesadas le están haciendo daño
a mucha gente”, explicó Orozco. “Hay que dar una respuesta a
todo esto con mensajes de buena
salud y la buena alimentación con
vegetales, con frutas y alimentos
naturales”.
El álbum educa a los niños por
medio de cantos, juegos, bailes y
dichos como “si quieres llegar a
cien come bien”.
“Con todos esos dichos y cositas,
los niños van a llegar a entender un
poco más la cuestión lingüística, la
cultura del lenguaje y el mensaje
principal que es la alimentación”,
comentó Orozco. “Tenemos canciones sobre la frutas, las legumbres, sobre el aseo que hay que

lavarse las manos antes de comer y
hay que lavarse los dientes después
de comer”.
Además de enfatizar la importancia de una dieta saludable,
Orozco destacó que el ejercicio es
muy importante. El álbum cuenta
con varios bailes, entre ellos “La
Conga de las Frutas”, “El Baile de
las Legumbres” y “El Baile de la
Gallina de Juanito”.
Orozco, originario de la Ciudad
de México, empezó a cantar a los 8
años de edad en El Coro de Niños
de la Ciudad de México, donde
tuvo la oportunidad de viajar por
todo el mundo. A los 19 años de
edad se mudó a California y obtuvo
su licenciatura de la Universidad
de California Berkeley y su título
de maestría en Educación Multicultural de la Universidad de San
Francisco.
Después de terminar su maestría,
Orozco se dedicó a cantar y a escribir para niños en español y en
inglés. Desde entonces, Orozco se
ha dedicado a visitar diferentes escuelas para fomentar la importancia de la cultura y el lenguaje dual.

El sábado 21 de noviembre se
presentará el Mariachi Vargas de
Tecatitlán en el teatro Lila Cockrell en un evento anual que tiene
veinte años de tradición bajo
el sugerente título de Mariachi
Vargas Extravaganza, puesto que
no solo es un concierto, sino una
semana de eventos musicales.
Para acompañar al Mariachi
Vargas el día del concierto principal, se presentarán artistas de
ambos lados de la frontera, entre
ellos la cantante mexicana Azu-
cena de La Torre y el Mariachi
Los Caporales de San Antonio.
Desde su inicio en 1995 Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza ha sido una producción
de la agencia MPR, que dirige
Cynthia Muñoz, quien al anunciar la esperada actividad afirmó
que el evento “es más que una
vitrina donde se expone la música
del mariachi”, sino que es una
profunda expresión cultural que
representa el corazón y el alma
de México y de las comunidades
mexicoamericanas en los Estados
Unidos.
En el programa de esta “Extravaganza” están incluidos, entre
otras celebraciones y concursos,
la recepción el miércoles 18 de
noviembre a las 7 de la noche en
el Instituto Cultural Mexicano en
honor del trompetista Rigoberto
Mercado, que ha estado 25 años
con el mariachi de Tecatitlán.
El jueves 19 tendrá lugar el
concurso de compositores de
música para mariachis en el
Grand Hyatt Hotel.
El viernes 20 de noviembre en
el Teatro Lila Cockrell grupos
de mariachis participarán en un
concurso.

EFE - Robin Williams’ widow, Susan Williams, spoke to
U.S. media for the first time after
her husband’s suicide, saying it
was not depression but dementia
that killed him.
In two interviews given to
People magazine and to the ABC
network, Williams said she does
not blame Williams for killing
himself since “he would’ve had
maybe three years left. And they
would’ve been hard years,” as he
was paranoid and anxious.
“And it’s a good chance he
would’ve been locked up,” explained Williams.
“It was not depression that
killed Robin. Depression was
one of 50 symptoms and it was
a small one,” she added.
She said the actor suffered
from Lewy Body Dementia, a
neurodegenerative disease that
is the third leading cause of
dementia after Alzheimer’s and
vascular dementia.
“I pray to God it will shed
some light on Lewy bodies for
the millions of people and their
loved ones who are suffering
with it,” she said.

Parkinson’s disease because the
symptoms are similar, and in
Williams’ case it was not diagnosed till the autopsy as his doctors believed he had Parkinson’s.
In the last few months of his
life, Williams’ condition deteriorated fast and he began experiencing anxiety attacks and an
accident at home against a door
that caused heavy bleeding in
his head.
“I know now the doctors the
whole team was doing exactly
the right things. It’s just that this
disease was faster than us and
bigger than us. We would have
gotten there eventually,” said
the widow of the actor, known
for movies that include “Good
Morning Vietnam,” “Good Will
Hunting” and “Dead Poets Society,” among others.
Williams, 63, had hanged
himself with a belt in his house
in Tiburon in San Francisco
Bay Area, California, last year
in August.

colección de moda juvenil y rebelde struts through Spring collections

El diseñador colombiano Jorge
Duque Velez debutó su más reciente colección con éxito en Fashion Week San Antonio el martes
3 de noviembre en el Centro de
Artes de Texas A&M University.
Es la primera vez que el diseñador presenta su colección en
Estados Unidos, por lo que se
sintió muy contento.
“Feliz de traer una colección
tan rebelde, tan llena de color,
tan llena de juventud. La idea
es transformar la moda cada
momento y llevarla más allá”,
comentó Velez a La Prensa.
Con música latina tocando en el
fondo, el show comenzó y todos
pudieron admirar los diseños coloridos para esta primavera/verano
2016 en la pasarela, con escotes
pronunciados, prendas con brillos y telas fluidas. Las modelos
lucieron bellas con peinados con
trenzas y un delineador azul muy
chic.
“Es una colección inspirada en
las memorias de los finales de los
80s y principios de los 90s, del
caos, de la calle, inspirada en el
‘street wear’. Es muy divertida”
señaló el diseñador, quien fue el
ganador en la primera temporada
del exitoso programa Project Runway Latin America.
La alcaldesa de San Antonio
Ivy Taylor fue la invitada especial y lució un hermoso vestido
color verde con toques café en los
hombros, una de las creaciones
favoritas de Velez.
“Me siento agradecido de haber
sido invitado a presentar mi colección en San Antonio. Es una
ciudad que me sorprende por
su belleza, por la gente y ¡Las
mujeres son divinas! Encontré a
todas las mujeres para vestir mi
colección, inclusive a la alcaldesa,
es fantástica”, comentó Velez.
La alcaldesa Taylor también se
sintió contenta de apoyar la Semana de la Moda en San Antonio.
“Estamos emocionados de tener
su debut en San Antonio y contenta de tener el privilegio de lucir
una de sus hermosas creaciones,
que son obras de arte”, comentó
la alcaldesa Taylor.

Fashion Week San Antonio
was in full swing on Day 4 with
a collection for both Fall and
Spring. From outfits like a royal
blue romper to graphic sweaters
paired with a skirt, A’Gaci made
sure seasonal transitions stood out
for the youthful day to night look.
“This collection is obviously
very transitional so it is really
going into our Spring, but still
transition into Fall and…our
clothing collection is a little bit
of fun holiday, but it is still glitz
and glam that will transition well
into spring,” discussed Amanda
Featherstone McGary, A’Gaci’s
district visual manager for Houston and San Antonio Market, to
La Prensa.
On Day 5 of Fashion Week,
there were many designers at
once to display their creations
along with a background story for
their collections. From darkness
peeking through Joey Ramirez’s
dresses to a time travel collection
by Blanquita Sullivan, there are
so many options to choose from.
Joey Ramirez, a designer from
Laredo, Texas, created a collection inspired by the legend of La
Lechusa. Models donned in silver
light hair and black dresses made
sure that the audience had something to be scared about.
“I have always been attracted to
the darkness. My biggest inspiration is Alexander McQueen and
the shock value he gives to his
clothing, so I want to do that in
a wearable way,” explained the
designer.
Although the story behind the
collection was one of a sad lady,
Ramirez advised the audience to
not be afraid of his collection.
If you are more interested in
adding lighter colors to your
spring wardrobe, consider the
collection of Blanquita Sullivan.
The inspiration behind her timeless collection came from the
beauty and skills provided by her
grandmother.
“My inspiration was my grandmother, romance and travel, and
imagine being on an old train
going through Central America.
Music like Celia Cruz also inspires me, so I came up with a
story about someone going on an
adventure,” discussed Sullivan.
Creating outfits like dresses
with gloves, polka dots and
fedora hats will want anyone to
feel as if they are back in a different time.

EFE - El célebre Snoopy se convirtió este lunes en el primer beagle
con una estrella en el Paseo de la
Fama de Hollywood, confirmó a
Efe Ana Martínez, productora de la
ceremonia.
Además, se trata del cuarto perro
reconocido por el Paseo de la Fama
tras Lassie, Rin Tin Tin y Strongheart, todos ellos reales y con fama
gracias a sus papeles en series y
películas estadounidenses.

infancia y que creció con el objetivo
de ser como él.
“Es un espíritu libre. No le importa que las cosas que quiere ser, ya sea
un héroe de la I Guerra Mundial, un
buitre, un astronauta o un cocodrilo,
le parezcan una locura a los demás”,
sostuvo Feig.
“Hace lo que quiere y se divierte.
Snoopy es esa parte de nosotros que
quiere romper con todo, que quiere
volar y ser libre sin importar lo que
otros digan. Él vive esa rica vida de
fantasía que existe dentro de todos
nosotros”, manifestó.
El evento no pudo llegar en un
momento más oportuno, ya que el
popular personaje y la pandilla de
Charlie Brown llegó este viernes a
los cines con la película del estudio
20th Century Fox “The Peanuts
Movie”, dirigida por Steve Martino.
