19 JULY 2015  16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Last Sunday we heard an account of the Twelve sent out
to share in the Gospel mission in Mark 6:7-13. Today we have
the aftermath described in vivid detail in Mark 6:30-34. As they rejoin Jesus,
they are full of stories as they share the experience of their missionary
journeys. We glimpse the openness and hospitality of the band Jesus
gathered around him – “People were coming and going in great numbers, and
they had no opportunity even to eat” (Mark 6:31). Jesus suggests they cross
the water to a “lonely place” where they can “rest for a while” (Cf. Mark 6:31).
Now he will teach them how to find the interior strength that comes from
reflection and contemplation. The scene Mark describes, as Jesus and his
disciples arrive at their destination, is a memorable one. The crowd has
heard of their coming and awaits them. Hungry for what Jesus has to give
them, they “were like sheep without a shepherd” (Mark 6:34). So he changed
his plans and “and he began to teach them many things.” (Mark 6:34).
During the Easter season we were reminded that the Risen One is the
good shepherd. On Good Shepherd Sunday, however, our image was the
familiar figure, bringing back the lost sheep on his shoulders. Today we
have a down-to-earth image. People weighed down by life’s daily problems
are looking to Jesus to renew the vision of hope he has given them in the
past. He changes his plans and responds to their need. He has another
important lesson for the Twelve – the love for struggling humanity that he
shares with his Father. He knows no limit or holding back. He wants his
disciples to be one with him in this love if they are to be companions in his
mission.
In today’s first reading, Jeremiah 23:1-6, the prophet gives expression
to old Israel’s faith and hope, as it looks forward to the virtuous Branch of
the house of David – the messiah who would bring fulfilment to all Israel’s
immense hopes. Jeremiah saw the Babylonians bring ruin to Jerusalem,
because the shepherds who should have cared for the people were deaf
to his message. Now, he declares, God’s people must look forward to the
promised messiah, the true and wise king who – as his name indicates –
will express the Lord’s own integrity as he cares for them.
In our reading from the letter to the Ephesians 2:13-18, the teaching of
Paul again makes a dramatic shift to the time of fulfilment. What the prophet
looked forward to, what Jesus promised as he gave hope to the people and
instructed his disciples, has been realized in the Paschal Mystery. God’s
final achievement, through the power of the Savior’s resurrection, has many
aspects. This passage celebrates the Paschal Mystery as bringing the
peace and reconciliation in which the apparently insurmountable barriers that
divide the human family are overcome: “by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians
2:13) those who were estranged and hostile to one another have been
brought together. Paul’s teaching is profound. In his Paschal Mystery he
has identified with struggling humanity that we may be taken into a sharing
in his resurrection triumph. God’s project, so long frustrated, has now been
gloriously successful, in the “New Man”, the “Last Adam" (1 Corinthians
15:45). Through the Risen Lord, our disrupted human family has “for through
him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Ephesians 2:18).
With my prayers in Christ,
Fr. Patrick

19 JULY 2015  16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“I myself will gather the remnant of
my flock from all the lands to which I
have driven them and bring them
back to their meadow; there they
shall increase and
multiply.." (Jeremiah 23:3)
MONDAY
I can just see her "rolling her
eyes" in exasperation with me again!
We have had the same talk on
numerous occasions - the internal
struggle I go through seemingly every
time I pass by or I am approached by
someone asking for money - am I
"helping" and "enabling?" I am
supposing that deep within myself it
is simply a battle between being
"perfect" and just being generous - I
want to be perfectly generous!
So, a couple of days ago, I entered
into the same battle again when I was
summoned to the front desk. I
recognized him immediately. He had
been here the day before looking for
help and he did not leave a good
impression. I was wary. This time he
"needed money for a bus ticket so
that he could start his new job."
(I know what you are probably
thinking). The H.O.P.E. office was
closed. I was on my own!
A few days earlier I was with a
friend and one of our fellow
parishioners leaving a local
restaurant. We passed by a person
begging for money. I entered into the
battle, he reached into his pocket. He
acted, I didn't - perfectly.
Thankfully, we are surrounded by
generous and giving parishioners like
my friend. Last week I presented to
you some of the looming maintenance
and upkeep financial needs that we
face. Last weekend our regular
Sunday collection totaled $32,134
and you donated $7,906 to the
special Parish Missions Appeal.
And, most importantly, four
parishioners have come forward to
offer their expertise to guide our
facilities-related decision making you acted! Thank You!
Deacon Steve
PS. The semi-stranger at our front
door received some cash for his bus
ticket (I pray). I gave him what I had,
remembering my friend’s example
and that I would let the Lord decide
the "helping" or "enabling" question
in my mind. I pray too, that He will
bring them [me] back to their [His]
meadow.

REFLECTION
Imagine you’ve just gotten back from a mission trip
with your youth group. You’ve had a great week helping
people but you’re physically and emotionally exhausted.
You pull in the parking lot ready to get home for a
shower and a serious nap when you see them: the
people you helped. They were so inspired by your work,
your faith, the example you set, that they’ve followed you
home. Not only that, they’ve brought along their friends
and relatives, 5,000 of them! That’s the scenario that the
Apostles face in today’s Gospel. Last week we heard the
story of Jesus sending them out to preach with nothing
but the clothes on their backs. In today’s Gospel they
come back with sunburns and blisters and stories to tell,
so Jesus invites them to come away with him to rest. The
crowds have gathered and Jesus sees that they need
him. He doesn’t get back in the boat and go find another
beach that’s less crowded. He does what needs doing.
He teaches them about the love God.
ACTION
Do you know anyone who is like a sheep “without a
shepherd”? Someone who is lost and needs a friend or
a little guidance or encouragement? Reach out to that
person this week. A smile or a conversation can be a
great start.
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
What would your reaction be if the scenario above
actually took place?
Think of a time in your life when you have been like a
sheep without a shepherd. Did you turn to God? Why or
why not?

19 JULY 2015  16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Él no conoce límites o demoras.
