Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians: 13-15 The reason St. Paul finds strength in his limitations is because he is aware that the Lord will provide the power needed in the midst of those deficiencies. Paul’s life is God-centered. Living life that way is exactly the way one can best follow stewardship as a way of life. Paul prefaces his statement about being weak and strong by writing the message he has been given by the Lord, who said to him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” - See more at www.catholicsteward.com/blog/. Unfortunately, many don’t seek treatment. Depression is a factor in half of all suicide attempts and suicide is estimated to be the eighth leading cause of death across all age ranges. Signs and symptoms of depression should always be addressed as soon as possible, as early intervention gives the best chance for a complete recovery. If you feel you have 3 or more of these symptoms a good place to start would be with your primary care physician. Symptoms of Depression • Feelings of sadness, emptiness. • Irritability or frustration even over small matters. • Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities. • Sleeping too much or too little. • Lack of energy. • Anxiety, agitation or restlessness. • Slowed thinking, speaking or movements. • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt. • Frequent thoughts of death or suicide. • Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches. LIVING STONES Foundations for Living Stones A Faith Formation Program for interested Adults “Come to him, a living stone...chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourself be built into a spiritual house...” (1 Peter 2:4-5) St. Sabina, a Catholic faith community committed to total and lifelong faith formation, is offering an adult faith formation program titled, Foundations for Living Stones. The program explores in greater depth and knowledge the basics of our faith. All the sessions focus on the ministry that we are called to in and through our baptism. Communication skills, group development, leadership skills, bible study, church history, prayer and sacraments are some of the many areas explored and examined in depth. Adult methods of learning and reflection are employed throughout. The sessions are scheduled on Tuesday evenings, from 7-9:30 PM, beginning in late August and ending in late May. This is a 9-month commitment to deepen one’s skills and knowledge so as to become a more effective and engaging minister. We hope to work collaboratively with our neighboring parishes, inviting them to be part of this mutual learning process. For a brochure or more information, please call or e-mail either Kris or Biagio at: Biagio Mazza 816-979-3153 [email protected] Kris Larkey 816-979-3151; [email protected] OVER 55 NEW DINNER THEATRE Our next dinner theatre show will be The Addams Family, a musical based on The Addams Family. Amen 2016 DELEGATION TO EL SALVADOR Our parish will be taking its second delegation to El Salvador to learn more about the scholarship program there and to have the opportunity to meet and visit with our scholarship students and their families. We will travel to Cinquera and also to El Mozote. El Mozote was the sight of one of many massacres that occurred in El Salvador during their Civil War. As of now we are planning to travel to El Salvador on January 5 and staying approximately 8 days. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Kris at 816 -979-3151 or by email at [email protected]. MEMORY BOARD LISTING OUR DECEASED Many years ago one of our parish families created a memory board to be displayed in the gathering space listing all those buried from our parish. In 2004 the memory board was filled with names. Since then, we have had funerals for 266 more parishioners. Our Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus has donated funds for the creation of an additional memory board, which is now hanging in the north alcove of the gathering space. We give them our sincere thanks for undertaking this project. We also thank Joe Lager for his craftsmanship in building and staining the new board. We have also received a donation from a parishioner that would like to remain anonymous to cover the costs to keep the memory board up to date, and we thank that parishioner also. Please take a moment to stop by the north alcove to look at the memory boards. May all our beloved deceased rest in the peace of Christ. ADULT FAITH FORMATION REFLECTION ON THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME , YEAR B The readings for this Sunday focus our attention on the human experience of opposition, contempt, rejection and misunderstanding. All four readings clearly state that pursuing God’s agenda and carrying on the mission and ministry of Jesus will result in opposition, rejection and misunderstanding. This reality is an integral part of our baptismal commitment that we usually find difficult to face, respond to and live with. Today’s readings offer various ways to deal with this pervasive human experience. Responsorial Psalm 123 offers the strongest clue to facing this most difficult of life’s dilemmas. The refrain challenges us to fix our eyes on the Lord, from whom comes all mercy, faithfulness, support and guidance. With the whole assembly we are invited to sing, “Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.” Through the psalm’s prayer focus we come to understand that it is only in and with the Lord that we can face rejection and opposition with integrity and steadfastness. The Lord does not take away the reality but rather helps us confront our distress and come to a sense of wholeness and peace in the face of it. The first reading speaks of Ezekiel being called by the Lord to be a prophet to the people. In his vocation call, Ezekiel comes to the realization that a prophet, one who speaks on behalf of the Lord, will experience opposition and rejection by the people. It seems as if this reality is part and parcel of what it means to speak on behalf of God. The passage states that people in general have a pattern of rejecting anyone who reminds them of God’s values and intentions. Since such words usually go against the prevailing attitude and perspective of most people, they are difficult to accept, leading to a pattern of rejection and opposition to anyone who claims to speak on behalf of God. As with all who are called to speak on behalf of the Lord, Ezekiel realizes that only with the Lord is this life adventure truly possible. Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians speaks of a “thorn in the flesh” that he feels God had given him in order to curb his pride. In his ministry on behalf of the Lord, Paul feels that he was granted many spiritual gifts from God. This could have easily given Paul a “big head.” This “thorn in the flesh” is a sign that he is human just like everyone else. He seems to use this weakness, whatever it might be, to alert him to his need for the Lord. This weakness causes him to fix his “eyes” on the Lord alone. In this fashion, Paul can put up with any rejection and opposition, “for when I am weak, then I am strong.” Rejection and opposition causes him to place his trust completely in the Lord, thus making him strong, and not in his own weak and haughty self. Mark’s gospel has Jesus visit his hometown of Nazareth only to experience rejection, contempt and opposition from those closest to him, “from his own kin and in his own house.” Jesus is so amazed at their “lack of faith” that he could not perform mighty deeds there. Their “lack of faith” meant that they could not perceive the presence and action of God in their midst. They had their minds and hearts closed to what God was accomplishing in the person of Jesus. Such blindness is often the main source of rejection and opposition to God. In such a context, God is powerless. God cannot and will not force faith. Faith can only operate when we allow it to take root in our hearts. How have you learned to perceive the presence of God in your life? How have you handled rejection and opposition for your fidelity to your baptismal commitment? Ask God for help and guidance in fixing your “eyes” only on the Lord, trusting in God’s mercy, support and faithfulness. Truly, only this makes us strong. SABINA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS – 2015-2016 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the RCIA, is a process which welcomes all who are interested in becoming Catholic, or any Catholic wishing to deepen their understanding of the faith. The Rite involves the formation of a community that learns, shares, builds community and prays together to deepen their relationship to God and to the parish family. During the next few weeks, we will be asking if you are aware of anyone who would benefit from participation in this faith learning process. Below are some of the values that we hold as Catholic Christians, which we readily share with all who desire to journey with us through the RCIA. WHY BE CATHOLIC? The Catholic Church has consistently believed that God has a universal will and desire to save all people. Our God is the God of all people. God has initiated this love relationship with all creation and desires to bring all to fullness through total union with God for all eternity. Each one is called to union with God through the faith path and tradition that they feel God is leading them. If this is so, then why be Catholic? One is Catholic, not because it is the only way to God, but because one feels attracted to the things that the Catholic tradition offers. One feels at home more in the Catholic tradition than in other faith traditions. The following list is meant to highlight some of those aspects of the Catholic tradition that have attracted others to it. Catholics are not the only ones that value these qualities. Nor have we been consistent in following through on them. But, no matter the history, we seem to have held onto these values rather consistently. See if these are values and attractions for you. 1. We affirm a belief in the goodness of all creation. 2. We have a universal sense of openness to all people and all cultures. 3. We affirm that we are all called to holiness. 4. We are committed to continual growth as persons. 5. We are challenged to change the world and society into the reign of God. 6. We are called to live in community. 7. We have historical roots and identity. 8. We respect reason, human knowledge and human exploration. If you or anyone you know would be attracted to these values, please share this with them. Please fill out the contact information sheet located in the gathering space and we will personally contact and invite all those interested to our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Meal which will be held on Thursday, August 27th, 2015 at 6:00pm. For more information: Contact Biagio Mazza at 816331-4713 or by e-mail: [email protected] AREA INFORMATION DACA RENEWALS Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) must be renewed every two years. FURTHER BY FAITH - DIOCESAN BOOK Thanks to all who have ordered copies of the new book published by the diocese, Further by Faith. This book highlights the art and architecture of our diocesan parishes. The cost of the book is $35.00. If you would like to order a book, please contact Kris in the parish office. SOCIAL JUSTICE LOVE THY NEIGHBOR PROJECT UPDATES Through our needs survey that we asked everyone to participate in, we have discovered several needs that we are trying to resolve in different ways. We just had our very first St. Sabina Helping Hands program on Saturday, June 20, where volunteers helped fellow parishioners with household repairs and yard work. We are working on making a free resource book for seniors available to parishioners. In this book you will be able to find resources for transportation, in home care, senior activities and entertainment, and many more. In the coming weeks, you can expect to see a “Love Thy Neighbor” update area set up in the gathering space. Here you will be able to find the needs surveys, which you can fill out at any time, information and sign ups for current projects, and the resource books mentioned above.
