February 8, 2015 5th Sunday In Ordinary Time Holy Name of Mary Parish Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary I love my scars. They tell my life story and remind me of what I have survived. They show my resiliency. I am neither too little nor too much, and I do not have to prove myself to anyone. I am okay as I am. Everything I do is an opportunity to be completely present. My spouse and I know each other better than anyone. We take care of each other to make a strong family. Our marriage is something worth celebrating. Page 2 Holy Name of Mary Parish My dear sisters and brothers, Thank you for your way of listening to God call you back to this place. May your heart, mind, spirit become more and more free. In the 1930s when Gillian was a child, her teachers considered her learning disabled, one of those students who didn’t pay attention or focus, and who could not sit still. ADHD was not yet a diagnosis, so Gillian was labeled “difficult.” And her parents were deeply troubled. A school counselor arranged a meeting with Gillian and her parents to discuss the options. Through the entire meeting, Gillian sat on her hands, stoic, doing her best to act natural and well behaved. At the end, the counselor asked to see Gillian’s parents privately, outside the office. Before he left the room, he turned on his radio. Music filled the office. Outside the office door, the counselor asked Gillian’s parents to look back inside at their daughter. No longer seated, Gillian now moved about the room with the music – free, untroubled, and blissful. “You see,” the counselor told her parents, “your daughter isn’t sick. She’s a dancer.” This story could have gone another way. Gillian could have been labeled and medicated. Problem solved. Instead, she was given the freedom to live from the inside out. The result? A lifetime of dance and stage and in films, and an extensive career as choreographer for shows such as Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. Difficult little Gillian became the great Gillian Lynne. In our hearts we are all dancers. It is that part of us that responds freely to the music of abundant life. Our fears or the fears of others label us, restrict us and eventually dismiss us and whatever gifts we have to offer. The Eucharist renews us. When Fr. Ron Rolheiser was diagnosed with cancer he wrote: “…life is what happens while you are planning your life; so too conversion. Having cancer taught me some lessons other than the ones I planned. Most important among these was this: Like everyone else in this world, I’ve always wanted joy in my life – friendship, love, celebration. But, and this has been the big handicap in finding these, I have always (however unconsciously) felt that the joy I so longed for could only come my way when I was finally free from all anxiety, emotional tension, pressure, overwork, illness, frustration, and stress of all kinds. We nurse this strange fantasy that it is only after all our bills are paid, our health is perfect, all tensions within our families and friendships are resolved, and we are in a peaceful, leisured space that we can finally enter life and enjoy it. In the meantime, we put our lives on hold as we perpetually gear up, get ready and wait for that perfect moment to arrive where we can finally rejoice within life.” Now is the time, this is the place, we are the people. May we live like we are dying – we are unto a new life. Dancing a little more these days, with you and in love, Fr. Rich, SS.CC. Whatever we have in this life, we have it because God gave it to us. We are working with only the gifts with which He blessed us – including our family, our natural abilities, our education, our money and the opportunities that have crossed our paths. All of these are gifts from God. Our very lives are a gift from God and thus belong to Him. This is why we must take time to pray to know how God wants us to use the life He has given us. We are called to be His disciples in today’s world. Financial Stewardship: Thank you for your generosity to Holy Name of Mary Parish! Friday LENT Soup N Stations Heater Help! For 23 years it has provided the basics — electricity, water, and necessary repairs and materials — for local churches and schools in need enabling all to thrive. All parishes take part in the campaign each year. The Church is one body, whose members need one another. Each depends upon the prayerful gifts of all. All depend upon each. So all depend upon you. Because you give, people have a place where they can worship and serve; our students have a safe environment in which to learn and thrive. Your gifts empower them to give in turn, improving life in many neighborhoods. You are the one who can provide parishes with resources needed for sacraments, education, hope, inspiration, stronger families, and better leadership. If you receive your Together in Mission pledge form in the mail, please ll it out and mail it back or bring it with you to Mass.
