H-E-B delivers ‘Week of
Giving’ to individuals in need for 22 years with donor heart

acting upon philanthropic efforts
throughout San Antonio.
Volunteers assembled diapercare packages for those in need,

of food for military families and
served lunch to patients at the San
Antonio State Hospital.

When Jim Leal received a
heart transplant in 1993, his doctor told him the average survival
rate following the procedure was
five years.
More than two decades later,
Leal keeps his heart strong by
staying active and living life to the
fullest. At 78 years old, he has no
intention of slowing down.
Every Friday, Leal attends
dance lessons at Incarnate Word
University. He dances cumbia,
merengue, cha-cha-cha and danzón, among many other dance
styles. Leal estimates he has
taught more than 300 women how
to dance. Zumba and aerobics are
also part of his regular routine.
In addition to staying physically active, Leal carries himself
with an attitude of gratitude and a
refreshingly cheerful spirit.
“I’m always in a good mood,
I’ve never ever been angry, I
guess I’m what you call good
natured,” Leal told La Prensa.
“People say they don’t see me
as someone who had a heart
transplant.”

His positive and upbeat demeanor may have a thing or two
to do with his long and healthy life
after the operation.
“I never question my Lord, I
just ask him to give me strength,”
Leal said. “I love life, I truly do
love life, I’m hyper to the max and
extremely friendly.”
Before receiving a transplant,
Leal’s heart was 87 percent dead;
however, the complications began
11 years prior to receiving a new
heart.
“I started getting real shortwinded,” Leal recalled. “I couldn’t
climb the stairs because I couldn’t
breathe.”
Within those 11 years prior to
the transplant, he received two
heart bypass surgeries. In 1993,
the doctors told him he needed a
new heart to live.

to reassure the country that it can
be both a safe haven and stand firm
against domestic terrorism.
“Local taxpayers are not funding
any of the refugee resettlement. In
Austin, there are two groups that
help resettle refugees,” explained
Mayor Adler.
The issue of whether the United
States should continued its current
policy towards political refugees
is one that is sure to be debated
over the following months as the
President Obama enters his last
year in the White House.
National security hardliners like
Republican Presidential candidates
like Donald Trump, Rep. Marco
Rubio and Rep. Ted Cruz all vow
to stem the flow of political asylum
applicants by making the process
more stringent.
Currently, the entire application
process may take up to 18 months
and require numerous interviews
where applicants must prove they
are victims of political retribution. At any point, they may be
sent back to a previous agency
that cleared them only to have to
start over if information does not
match up.
In recent years, the President has
been criticized by human rights
advocates for having the relocation process take too long and be
too expensive. Recent overtures by
White House attempted to rectify
that by instilling a multi-agency,
concurrent approach.
As the flow of the Syrian refugees only seems to grow with the
increasing tensions in the region,
only time will tell if the United
States joins countries like France
and Germany as a haven for political asylum seekers.
Baptist Health Foundation of San
Antonio grants $6.6 million to
local health-related organizations

Baptist Health Foundation of
San Antonio is awarding more than
$6.6 million to 86 area nonprofit
organizations to improve the health
and well-being of communities in
eight South Texas counties.
That amount includes a grant of
more than $1 million to the University of Texas Health Science Center
San Antonio for a new Alzheimer’s
Institute.
The $1,050,000 UTHSC grant,
the largest award in the BHFSA’s
history, will help establish a comprehensive Institute for Alzheimer
and Neurodegenerative Disease at
the UT Health Science Center to
serve the estimated 55,000 patients
and caregivers in San Antonio and
South Texas.
The BHFSA grant will assist
with the recruitment of leading
clinical specialists and researchers
to San Antonio with a focus on
treating and studying Alzheimer’s,
Parkinson’s, frontal temporal dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
“Baptist Health Foundation is
deeply honored and humbled to
make the largest grant in its history to the UTHSCSA’s landmark
establishment of a much needed
Alzheimer’s Institute,” said Cody
Knowlton, president and CEO of
BHFSA. “This dreaded disease affects millions and the Foundation’s
Trustees recognized that this was
the project which needed more of
God’s money in 2015.”
BHFSA awarded $6,655,901
to 86 non-profit organizations this
year, the largest amount of money
and recipients since the foundation
began awarding annual grants in
2005. The 2015 amount is an increase of $684,851 from last year,
with 14 more organizations receiving funding than in 2014.
All of the awards support a
wide range of services and educational opportunities to enhance the
health of residents of Bexar County
and contiguous counties in South
Texas, including Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall,
Medina and Wilson counties.
Other grant recipients range from
the American Diabetes Association to Girls Inc., a non-profit that
provides mentorship and programming that helps girls make positive
choices and plan for their futures.
Other grants given by BHFSA
included $1,069,900 in scholarship funding to students pursuing
health-related careers at 14 local
institutions as well as two disaster
relief awards for $25,000 to Texas
Baptist Men and $50,000 to the
Salvation Army.
“To God Be the Glory for the
excellent work area nonprofits do
which enables the Baptist Health
Foundation to fulfill its mission of
improving the health of our community by fostering and funding
clinical, educational, spiritual and
scientific initiatives while honoring God and our Baptist heritage,”
Knowlton said.
Since issuing their first annual
grant awards in 2005, BHFSA (in
conjunction with the former Baptist
Health Services Foundation) has
awarded 792 health-related grants
totaling $55,468,903 to organizations in its eight-county region.

this time, the heart recipient only
lived for one day.
“I dodged two bullets,” Leal
said. “The third call was my lucky
call.”
On Dec. 28, 1993 Leal’s pager
beeped at 1:15 a.m. It was the
transplant coordinator and she had
a belated Christmas gift for Leal.
A new heart had been found.
She asked him when he could
come in, to which he replied, “I’m
on my way now!”
Before heading out, Leal notified his next door neighbors he
was going to the hospital for a
heart transplant. They wished him
good luck and said they would
light a candle for him.
With his neighbors’ blessing
and a heart full of faith, he underwent surgery that same day.
“I went in and I woke up a new
man,” Leal said.
Although he knew of the two
patients who died shortly after
receiving a heart transplant, fear
never crept in Leal’s mind.
“The thing about me es que yo
no tengo miedo,” Leal told La
Prensa. “I swear, they asked me
and I was not scared.”
For those afraid of going
through a heart transplant procedure, he recommends patients to
clutch on to their faith.
“A lot of people say why me
Lord? Why did I have to get sick?
I don’t see it that way, I say thank
you Lord, for helping me out,”
Leal said.
Next month, Leal will be celebrating one more year of life
with his donor’s heart. Leal’s new
heart belonged to a 13-year-old
boy who died in a car crash. Leal
tried to compensate the family
monetarily by paying for funeral

Diaper Bank, a place where they
provide services and resources for
families who are in need of medical attention and basic necessities.
The H-E-B employees were on
hand to assemble diapers and baby
products into care packages so that
families will enjoy their holiday
season without worrying about the
essentials.
“Our partners [H-E-B workers]
have always been a part of the
global community for the past
few years. We really wanted to
focus on the week of Thanksgiving to come together as family and
friends, enjoy giving back to the
community and to represent the
supportive company that H-E-B
is,” said Lacey Kotzur, H-E-B
representative.
On Tuesday, volunteers were
ready to give back to those who
serve our country. H-E-B worked
with the United Service Organizations (USO) to fight against the
financial burden many military
members and their families have to
confront during the holidays.
The company came to the rescue by providing all the items
that will be needed to prepare a
costs, but they refused to accept.
He honors his donor by enjoying
life to the fullest and spreading
positivity into the world.
The United Network for Organ
Sharing (UNOS), a nonprofit that
matches available organs with
recipients nationwide, estimates
that one in every six heart recipients transplanted before 1994 has
survived 20 years or longer.
Leal was born in San Antonio
on June 25, 1937 and attended
Harlandale High School on the
city’s South Side. As a military
child, Leal was also raised in
Michigan and California. After
high school, Leal joined the 23rd
Infantry Division of the United
States Army.
Currently, Leal lives in San
Antonio. He has two daughters
and two grandkids he holds very
dear to his heart.

“We are very blessed to have
such a strong relationship with the
USO. A couple of months ago, we
wanted to do something impactful
for our service members and their
families around the holidays. Our
partners would like for them to to
truly focus on the meaning of the
holiday and celebrate with their
families without worrying about
costs,” said Kotzur.
After providing dinners for military families, their next stop was
The San Antonio State Hospital.
The hospital provides intensive
inpatient diagnostic, treatment and
rehabilitation for those who suffer from mental illness. In order
for patients to enjoy the holiday
season, H-E-B decided to visit the
hospital, set up game stations and
serve lunch to the patients of San
Antonio State Hospital.
Although Thanksgiving is a
day to spend with loved ones, the
company decided to do an activity
that involves a little bit of exercise
with the help of the San Antonio
Food Bank. Together, they took
their time and energy to run The
San Antonio Food Bank Great
Turkey Challengs 5K Run/Walk,
while helping fight hunger in the
community. For every $10 generated from the race, a dinner was
provided to a family in need during
the holiday season.
To end the week of festivities, the
company celebrated their 31st annual H-E-B tree lighting ceremony
at Alamo Plaza. As each light bulb
lit up, H-E-B partners reflected
on all the individuals they helped
during the week by giving them a
moment to glow.
“The community that H-E-B
serves is remarkable because they
open their arms to us, support us by
shopping at our store and are grateful and receptive to small ways we
can give back,” said Kotzur. “We
pay attention to what our communities need and we want them to know
that we are here to help them.”
Ultimately, the company understands the importance of giving
back to families, the military and
patients of San Antonio. Their
philanthropic efforts are a reason to
be thankful for this holiday season.

París. Nadie espera
morirse en
París, una de
las ciudades
más bellas y
civilizadas
Jorge Ramos del mundo,
de un bombazo, de un balazo o
de un ataque terrorista. Eso, gene­
ralmente, pasa en otros lugares.
No aquí. Por eso estos últimos
días han sido tan extraños.
Llegué horas después de que
terroristas de grupo Estado Islámico en Irak y Siria (ISIS)
causaran la muerte a más de 120
personas en restaurantes, bares,
un teatro y un estadio de fútbol.
Parte de ser periodista es llegar
y rápido a los sitios de donde
la gente sale huyendo. Y nunca
había visto a París tan vacía, tan
triste y tan asustada. Hasta la torre
Eiffel estaba cerrada y sin luces.
En Londres, un día después de
los ataques terroristas al metro y
autobuses en el verano del 2005,
los británicos salieron a retomar
sus calles. Yo los vi. No, no iban
a dejar que los terroristas de Al
Qaeda les robaran sus libertades
y su estilo de vida.
En cambio muchos parisinos se
quedaron en casa días después de
los ataques terroristas (tal y como
lo había solicitado su presidente
François Hollande). El miedo se
podía tocar. Nadie creía que solo
siete, ocho o nueve militantes de
ISIS podían haber causado semejante masacre. Otro ataque podía
ocurrir en cualquier momento.
ISIS logró lo impensable:
llevar la guerra hasta París.
La lógica de los terroristas es
muy primitiva y directa: Francia
bombardeó civiles en Siria y
ahora e­llos, en represalia, fueron
a matar civiles en Francia. Y
Washington sigue, amenazaron.

llegaron con miedo a la entrevis­
ta que tenían conmigo frente al
teatro Bataclan, donde habían
muerto 89 personas. En el metro
se fijaban en las personas que
llevaban mochilas. Temían otro
atentado.
Ellos cuatro, ninguno pasa
de los 23 años de edad, son sobrevivientes de los atentados de
París. Estaban en el partido de
fútbol que Francia le ganó 2 a 0
a Alemania cuando oyeron unos
estallidos. Más tarde se enterarían
que, a las afueras del estadio, tres
terroristas suicidas detonaron las
bombas caseras que llevaban escondidas debajo de la ropa.
Esas bombas eran para ellos,
y no entienden por qué otros
jóvenes los querían matar. No se
los quise decir pero creo que la
guerra apenas comienza y va a
durar muchos años.
Estos momentos en París me
recordaron tanto las horas posteriores a los actos terroristas
del 11 de septiembre del 2001
en Nueva York. El miedo crudo,
la incertidumbre, la impotencia.
No, no queríamos perder nuestras
libertades y derechos pero, antes,
había que salvar la vida.
Sin embargo, las costumbres
de los hombres y mujeres libres
de Francia se imponen y, poco
a poco, retoman los espacios
públicos. Los cafés en los Campos Elíseos, en Le Marais y en
Saint Germain des Prés se han
vuelto a llenar. Hay fila, otra
vez, para comer bistec con salsa
de pimienta y papas fritas en el
restaurante Entrecote. Cada taza
de café, cada copa de vino de
Burdeos y cada paso dado en
la calle es una minúscula pero
significativa victoria frente a los
intolerantes.
Pero la guerra sigue. La tele
está llena de sabelotodo que,
equivocadamente, comparan a
refugiados con terroristas y a
musulmanes con violentos. Cambio de canal, veo la magnífica
cobertura de CNN, y sé que al
llegar a casa en Estados Unidos
me esperan los mismos gritos con
los que, injustamente, comparan
a inmigrantes con criminales y
terroristas. Sé también que la
próxima elección en Estados Unidos es de increíble importancia:
ese presidente o presidenta nos
podría llevar a una guerra otra
más en Siria.
Antes de irme de París paso
por la torre Eiffel, que ahora está
pintada de azul, blanco y rojo, y
me detengo de nuevo frente al
teatro Bataclan. Al lado están las
ofrendas a los muertos: las flores,
las velas, las cartas con cosas que
nunca se dijeron en vida.
Esta es la generación Bataclan, le oigo decir con razón a
un reportero español. Sí, a esta
nueva generación le toca resolver
un problema el del extremismo
suicida que hoy parece intratable.
Hoy los políticos en el poder,
tanto en Europa como en Estados
Unidos, no saben qué hacer.
Mientras, la lluvia gélida del
noviembre parisino — como el
miedo mismo se cuela incómodamente por mi chaqueta, desde
el cuello hasta la espalda, y no sé
si tengo más frío por dentro que
por fuera.

Just a Thought: Pearl Harbor Day
Next week
we celebrate
the seventyfourth anniversary of the
bombing of
Pearl Harbor,
also referred
Steve Walker to as a “Day
that will live
in infamy.” On that day 74 years
ago at approximately 8 a.m. in
the morning, Dec. 7, 1941, the
Japanese attempted to destroy
the Pacific Fleet at the American
Naval Base near Honolulu.
Planes flew over Pearl Harbor
raining down bombs and bullets
onto the vessels moored below.
At 8:10 a.m., a 1,800-pound
bomb smashed through the deck
of the battleship USS Arizona and
landed in her forward ammunition
magazine.
The ship exploded and sank
with more than 1,000 men trapped
inside. Next, torpedoes pierced
the shell of the battleship USS
Oklahoma. With 400 sailors
aboard, the Oklahoma lost her
balance, rolled onto her side and
slipped underwater.
By the time the attack was over,
every battleship in Pearl Harbor-- the Arizona, the Oklahoma,
California, West Virginia, Utah,
Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Nevada had sustained
significant damage. (All but the
Arizona and Utah were eventually
salvaged and repaired.)
In all, the Japanese attack
on Pearl Harbor crippled or
destroyed 18 American ships
and nearly 300 airplanes. Dry
docks and airfields were likewise
destroyed. Most importantly, almost 2,500 men were killed and
another 1,000 were wounded.
Rudy Martinez, a Mexican
American young sailor had just
left his family in San Diego for
Pearl Harbor officially became
the first Hispanic to be killed
in World War II. Martinez was
awarded the Purple Heart and
World II Victory Medals posthumously.
That morning, the 21-yearold Navy Electrician’s mate 3rd
class was aboard the USS Utah
battleship when the vessel was
suddenly and deliberately struck
by two Japanese torpedoes in
the attack.
Within minutes of being
struck, the USS Utah sank, trapping Martinez, six officers, and
52 other men, who went down
with the ship.
Martinez was a high school
wrestling champion and became
a featherweight boxer. Since
then the American Legion Post
624 in Mansfield, Texas has
been renamed The Rudolph M.
Martinez Post.
Martinez’s death marked the
beginning of the Latino impact
on World War II.
About half a million Latinos
served during the war. Gen.
Douglas MacArthur called the
Arizona National Guard’s 158th
Infantry Regiment “Bushmasters,” “One of the greatest fighting combat teams ever deployed
for battle.” The regiment was
comprised of many Latino Soldiers.
In the years since, Latinos in
the United States have increasingly become a part of the history
and fabric of the strongest military the world has ever known.
The history of Latinos in the
Army spans from the War of
1812, when Latinos played their
first major role in what some
term “America’s second war
of independence,” to the most
recent Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
To date 61 Latinos have received the highest military decoration the Congressional Medal
of Honor, to include Cleto Rodriguez, the grandfather and
namesake of News 4 WOAI
Reporter Cleto Rodriguez. The
elder Rodriguez also served in
World War II.
On the anniversary of “The
Day that will live in Infamy,”
we remember all our men and
women who have served in uniform to include those Hispanics
who have given their lives for
this county as well.
As always, I write just a

Keeping our children safe during the holidays
Of the many
joys that come
with the holiday season,
few things
match the
Lloyd Doggett smile on the
face of a child
with a new toy. Toys entertain,
educate, and inspire the imagination.
As a father of two grown
daughters, I had been out of the
market for toys for over a decade.
But with four young grandchildren, I am headed to the toy store
once again. During this busy
shopping season parents browsing for the perfect toy, however,
should remain vigilant about hidden hazards. As recent headlines
have shown, not all toys are safe.
In fact, some toys can seriously
injure children.
Where can parents get guidance?
On Tuesday, Nov. 24, I participated in a public briefing
at Children’s Hospital of San
Antonio with Pediatrician in
Chief Dr. Mark Gilger, and the
Texas Public Interest Research
Group to discuss the 30th annual
TexPIRG “Trouble in Toyland”
report. This report offers safety
guidelines for purchasing toys
for small children and provides
examples of toys currently on
store shelves that pose potential
safety hazards. TexPIRG’s research focused on four categories

flea market should take extra care

Parents have the most important role
I have supported the work of
the Consumer Product Safety
Commission in setting safety
standards. But as important as
the CPSC’s role is, there is no
substitute for a parent’s care.

youngest and most vulnerable
member of family when buying
gifts. While a doll may be fine
for an eight year old, small parts
could be a choking hazard for

La radicalización de los grupos
islamistas tiene una multiplicidad
de vertientes que explican su
inicio y desarrollo. Todas están
conectadas las unas a las otras. No
existe una versión única que nos
haga entender por qué un grupo
de terroristas desalmados tuvo
que hacer utilidad de la violencia
en Francia para hacer relucir su
mensaje en el mundo.
Sin embargo, la globalización
es una de las tantas formas que
nos permite una explicación
pseudo-científica del reciente
atentado de un grupo de terroristas islámicos que, a partir de una
racionalización irracional y completamente idealista, quisieron
concientizar a su gente (población
islámica) de los peligros de este
proceso mundial.
Abdelhamid Abaaoud, el militante de ISIS que no solo dirigió el
plan que mató a 130 personas inocentes en París sino también tomó
parte directa en la guerra civil de
Siria, nació en Marruecos y creció
en Bruselas, Bélgica. De acuerdo
a testimonios documentados en
videos, Abaaoud aparentemente
sintió los efectos de un creciente
rechazo de Occidente a la cultura
del Medio Oriente, particularmente a su religión islámica.
Durante su estadía en Siria,
Abaaoud manifestó su desaire
contra la cultura Occidental.
“Toda mi vida he visto fluir la sangre de la gente islamita. Rezo que
Dios destroce su cuerpo a todos
los que se oponen (a nuestra religión) y los extermine”, expresó.

Five tips for staying stress
free during the holidays

The calendar doesn’t lie and
already you may feel the stress
starting to build.
The holidays are approaching, bringing with them a flurry
of must-accomplish tasks such
as baking, shopping, entertaining, traveling and dealing with
eccentric family members who
arrive ready to renew decadesold arguments.
So how can you endure without all those stress-inducing
moments ruining your health
and sapping your holiday spirit?
First off, don’t stress about
the fact you feel stressed, says
Dr. Donna L. Hamilton, author
of “Wellness Your Way: The
Short and Sweet Guide to Creating Your Custom Plan for a
Happier, Healthier Life” (www.
wellnessyourwaybook.com).
“Stress is pervasive,” Dr.
Hamilton says. “Stress is a fact
of life. And stress isn’t even
always bad. Some people need
a certain amount of stress to
function optimally.”
At its core, holiday stress
is just like any stress, only
with burnt sugar cookies and
interminable waits at the retailcheckout line involved.
Dr. Hamilton offers these
five tips to help you feel less
stressed as you navigate your
way through holiday hassles.
• Connect with the spirit
of gratitude that marks the
season. Research shows that
expressing gratitude can help
improve mood, increase energy levels, relieve stress and
increase motivation, Dr. Hamilton says. So look for reasons to
be grateful during the holidays,
whether it’s being thankful for
good health, a rewarding career,
a loving family or some other
positive in your life.
• Pause for a moment. Remember to take a few deep,
relaxing breaths throughout
the day no matter how you are
feeling. Even positive emotions
like excitement and enthusiasm
can create stress in the body,
just like typical stress emotions such as anger and frustration do, Dr. Hamilton says.
That’s why it’s important to
periodically do something that
promotes relaxation during active times.
• Make sure you get enough
sleep. Your body needs its
rest and a lack of sleep makes
it more difficult to deal with
the stressful situations you
might face through the holidays. With parties to attend,
travel schedules to plan and
gifts to wrap, it’s easy to trim
back the amount of time you
normally spend sleeping. Be
careful not to let that happen,
Dr. Hamilton says.
• Take a walk after you eat.
This works two ways for you.
It helps relax you and is good
exercise. “A nice walk is a good
way to separate yourself from
the pressures you might be feeling,” Dr. Hamilton says.
• Dance and laugh often.
They both burn calories and
help lift your mood. “We probably can’t do enough of either
of these,” Dr. Hamilton says.
Many people feel the need to
do something for others during the holiday season, but Dr.
Hamilton says it’s important
to remember as you bake pies,
wrap gifts or hang decorations
that you also must pay attention to your own physical and
mental needs.
“You can’t give from an
empty cup,” Dr. Hamilton says.

fun-filled evening highlighted by
a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus
who entered the stadium accompanied by angels from UIW’s

included Sr. Teresa Stanley,
CCVI, with the Sisters of Charity
of the Incarnate Word and Lacey
Kotzur with H-E-B. The audience
enjoyed performances by UIW’s
Chorale and Marching Cardinals,
the UIW and IWHS dance team
and choirs from Incarnate Word
High School and St. Anthony
Catholic School.
The St. Anthony Catholic High
School Jazz Band entertained
the crowd along with headliner
Tejano Music Legend and threetime UIW graduate Patsy Torres.
Mariachi Las Coronelas also
entertained the crowd at a complimentary reception sponsored by
H-E-B and Sodexo. The campus
will be open for self-guided tours
through Jan. 6, 2016.

La felicidad es buena para la salud mental

Dicen los expertos que la
felicidad es buena para la salud
mental. Que cuando mejor se está
con uno mismo esto se refleja en
nuestros semblantes. Lo mismo
se dice de quienes sonríen por
cualesquier ocasión, haciendo
chistes o comentarios jocosos,
pues estimulan el sistema nervio­
so y los músculos faciales (para
evitar las arrugas). Por haberse
iniciado la temporada de la
amistad con la tradicional cena
del Día de Acción de Gracias
(Thanksgiving Day) se espera
ver a toda la comunidad radiante
de felicidad, ya que se tendrá la
visita de familiares y amigos con
quienes estaremos compartiendo
momentos felices.
Por ser San Antonio una comunidad “fiestera”, cuyos habitantes
gustan del buen comer, beber y
asistir a tradicionales eventos,
espero ver muchas caras felices
por todos lados, especialmente
en los partidos del pentacampeón
Spurs de San Antonio, que se
encuentran jugando a lo máximo
y ubicados en el segundo escaño
del oeste en la NBA.
La idea de escribir este testimonio resultó al final del partido
que cubrí en el renovado estadio
AT&T Center, donde Spurs die­
ron cuenta del visitante Nuggets
de Denver.
Cuando me encontraba en los
vestidores de la franquicia Silver
& Black (Spurs) en espera de
obtener información de parte de
alguno de los jugadores estelares
o de suplentes, extrañé la presen­
cia del fotógrafo oficial de los
Spurs, quien además por años ha
sido representante de una influ­
yente agencia de noticias gráficas
(fotografías).
Decidí preguntarle al gerente
de medios informativos (de
Spurs) sobre la ausencia de mi
amigo fotógrafo, por lo que
me informó de forma oficial
que se el reportero gráfico se
encontraba disfrutando ya de
su retiro (jubilado), mismo que
había comenzado a escasos días
del partido Spurs vs. Nuggets.
Yo le respondí que para mí fue
sorpresa, que no le llegué a calcular al colega la edad y mucho
menos los años que le dedicó a su
profesión, cubriendo cada temporada los 41 partidos locales del
rol regular, más los de series de
playoff y de paso las seis finales
que se han jugado con resultado
de la captura de 5 títulos (Spurs
perdió la quinta final contra el
Heat de Miami en la temporada
2012-13).
El ejecutivo de prensa me
preguntó por mi edad. Yo le res­
pondí que el 31 de julio pasado
cumplí 60 años, edad que nunca
esperé haber llegado a celebrar.
Le indiqué además que para mi
retiro me faltan 5 años y así podré
obtener beneficios médicos.
“Mi estimado, a mí me faltan
cinco años para gozar de mi jubilación. Pero como soy persona
alcohólica yo solo vivo un día
a la vez. Cada amanecer le doy
gracias a Dios por concederme
un día más de vida”, le expresé
al gerente, quien de inmediato
me preguntó que si por llevar
esa forma de vida era feliz. Res­
pondí que sino mucho, sí como
para seguirla pasando, ya que mi
felicidad nunca la he definido,
porque he tenido que venir desde
abajo y encontrarme en la presente situación en la que a cada
momento disfruto y doy gracias
al Creador Divino por guiarme
por el camino correcto, para no
ofender a nadie, ni meterme en
problemas que den al traste con
los 16 años que tengo sobrio.
Yo creo que la felicidad que
actualmente vivo se debe a que
mis seres queridos están en buen
estado de salud y económico, que
es vital para todo ser humano.
Con ello he venido combatiendo
las malas noticias de lo que está
pasando en el mundo.
Aquí en San Antonio, desde
1991, encontré la tierra prometida. Dejé California por el estilo
de vida que llevaba.
Me considero ser una persona
bendecida, ya que nunca me
propuse o imagine de tener la
oportunidad (como periodista
y fotógrafo) de trabajar en La
Prensa de San Antonio. Mucho
menos que el plantel de los Spurs
me dieran la facilidad para cubrir
sus juegos y otros eventos que
rea­lizan sus jugadores estelares
en la comunidad al darme la
acreditación desde 1991 a la
fecha.
Durante estos años he tenido
también la oportunidad de que
la NBA me ha facilitado credenciales para la cobertura de las
6 grandes finales que los Spurs
han disputado. Desde la era del
Almirante David Robinson hasta
la del trío formado por Tim Duncan, Tony Parker y el renovado
escolta argentino Manu Ginóbili,
que unidos recientemente impusieron marca como la tripleta
activa más ganadora en la NBA
con 557 partidos ganados.
Todo esto es lo que a diario
me hace feliz. Por lo que a Dios
debo el poder seguir adelante
promovien­d o la salud en esta
sección, que de una u otra forma
me ha dado también satisfacciones por tener contentos a mis
“tres lectores”, a los que se han
sumado varios que en este mes
de noviembre quienes me han llamado a La Prensa para felicitar­
me y decirme que mucho les han
ayudado mis recomendaciones.
Entre mis “tres lectores” hay
uno que de por vida ha tenido
problemas de estreñimiento. Él se
ha venido curando con el remedio
“casero” que le sugerí, pero no
sin antes de ir a consultarlo con
su doctor. Que sean felices hoy
y siempre.
Recuerden que para no echar
a perder su dicha y felicidad
durante la temporada navideña
si toman bebidas embriagantes
no conduzcan, busquen chofer
designado o renten taxis o grúas
para que los lleven seguros a sus
respectivos hogares o destinos.

Japanese scientists discover
Give thanks for good
protein that inhibits HIV health—and take care of it

National Institute of Infectious
Diseases have discovered a protein, found in humans, that has
inhibitory effects on the human
immunodeficiency virus, or HIV,
public broadcaster NKH reported
Wednesday.
It was found that virus in the
cells with the protein known
as MARCH8 did not affect the
healthy cells in an individual, according to this report.
Kenzo Tokunaga, who participated in the research, said he
hopes for development of a drug
that helps produce MARCH8 in
the body, so that it can be used
for HIV treatment.
The research was based on cultivating HIV viruses using cells
with MARCH8 and cells without
it, after which it was concluded
that most of the infected cells
having MARCH8 did not infect
other healthy cells.

Most of us have diabetes running around in our family, but
was everyone diagnosed as an
adult? I found out my dad was
diagnosed in his 20s; that history
motivated me to start testing for
prediabetes at a younger age and
cut back on carbs. Pan dulce, old
friend, I miss you. But it beats
using insulin!
As you talk to family, find out
as much specific information as
is polite. Do all the primos have
heartburn trouble? Did they have
surgery, or how have they managed it? My husband couldn’t
figure out the weird pain in his
belly after eating, until we found
out his whole family had had their
gallbladder out before age 50.
You may find out certain cancers
have hit multiple family members, like most of your uncles on
your mom’s side.
Many cancers now are known
to be passed along genetically,
and genetic testing for certain
types of colon or breast cancers,
for example, is available in our
community and covered by most
insurances. Not only that, but
if your doctor knows about this
history, they may recommend
colonoscopy or mammogram at
a younger age or more frequently.
Your doctor will not know anything about your family history
unless you go and tell them! An
annual physical exam is recommended in everyone. Most of us
usually forget about it shortly
after we stop playing sports in
high school and don’t go back
until either we have a baby or
chest pain. In my practice I see
mostly adults, so I tell people to
see the doctor for a routine checkup once a year beginning at the
age of 40.
You don’t wait until your car is
out of oil to check the level, right?
You check it before that happens
to avoid car trouble. Why don’t
we treat our bodies the same
way? The response I usually get
is, “Doc, I feel fine.” Well, one
third of diabetics have no idea
they have diabetes because they
have no symptoms. You can’t
feel that your blood pressure is
high. You can feel fine and have
a lot going on with your health.
And you can pass along your
family history so you and your
doctor can make a game plan for
health maintenance.
So go to the doctor and have
blood pressure and heart rate
checked, let the doctor examine
you then send you for routine
blood tests. And bring along your
family history. There is a family history tool online at https://
familyhistory.hhs.gov, where you
can plug in all the history you get
this weekend and then print it out.
Give it to your doctor at your
next appointment. We can be in
control of our own health; choose
to do it and live a long, healthy

New era of
champions
The Chicago Bulls in 1995-1996
season were unbelievable. They
were unstoppable in fact.
With Michael Jordan back from
baseball, Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen by his side, and legendary
coach Phil Jackson at the helm, they
took down opponent after opponent.
Barely the start of the season and
they made history winning the first
15 regular season games in a row,
an NBA record.
It was the best start of any team
fans have ever watched in the
NBA. We all know what happens
after that.
Now, history might be repeating
itself or maybe this team just might
be even better. The Golden State
Warriors, with momentum heading
into the season after winning the
NBA Championship last year, are
on a roll.
By simply tying with the 1996
Bulls on their record, shows the
force and dominance of which this
team is capable. Having nearly
the same roster as last year, their
chemistry is right where it needs
to be to play well together. Leader
and captain Steph Curry even called
being a part of this Warriors team a
“brotherhood.”
Curry is playing so well he might
actually get MVP, Most Improved
Player and the NBA Scoring title
this year. He has always been known
to get a lot of points and assists, but
he has improved all around, now
he is starting to get rebounds, steals
and blocks. He is filling up is stat
sheet. He is now slated to be the next
“Michael Jordan” taking away that
thought of Lebron James.
But let’s face it. There will never
be a Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan
is Michael Jordan, only one of him,
just like there is only one Steph
Curry. They are singular. If we
could magically have a one on one
match between them with Jordan in
his prime, we could probably decide
who’s the greatest of all time.
Today we focus on the Warriors,
not the 96’ Bulls. The Warriors have
reserved a spot in history that no one
can take away from them. They are
a new breed of champions, they
represent the names on the front of
their jerseys very well, and they play
like Warriors on the court because
they care more about the team itself
than personal egos and goals, sorry
Clippers fans.
Whether you cheer for them or
hate on them, you do have to respect
them. They are proving last year’s
title run wasn’t a fluke. The Warriors
didn’t come into the season to play,
the came to win.

Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine said
Tuesday he is “not in position yet” to say
whether Johnny Manziel will start Monday
night against the Baltimore Ravens as planned
after social media posts showed Manziel allegedly partying last weekend in Texas. Pettine
said he is gathering information but called the
latest incident involving his quarterback “disappointing ... very.”
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick suffered an “extensive” labrum tear in
his left, non-throwing shoulder, according to a
Sacramento Bee report. Kaepernick recently
underwent surgery to repair his shoulder in
Vail, Colorado and was placed on injured reserve. The timetable for Kaepernick’s recovery
is expected to be from four to six months.

Manziel not a starter yet
Tim Duncan’s ritual before any
game, aside from practicing his
patented jump shot, is greeting
his teammates individually as
they warm up.
That may not be the typical
routine for one of the perennial
stars of the team, but it says much
about everyone’s role during San
Antonio’s 2015-16 campaign.
With the Spurs bench pouring in
an average of 45 points per game,
the usual starters can reasonably
expect the second unit to keep the
scoring pace brisk.
Since the addition of LaMarcus
Aldridge, the 30 year-old power
forward from Texas has become
a fixture in the starting line-up.
His 15 points per game average,
in tandem with his presence in
the low post to draw an extra
defender, has opened the door to
more open looks for teammates.
Yet the cast of players off the
bench has always been a bright
spot for the Spurs. The latest
permutation includes the veteran
Manu Ginobili, Patty Mills, David West, Boris Diaw, Rasual
Butler, Kyle Anderson, Boban
Marjonovic, Matt Bonner, Ray
McCallum and Jonathan Sim-
mons.
With coach Popovich’s penchant for playing with the lineup,
this season has seen him put more
faith in Patty Mills and Manu Ginobili to take the scoring reigns.
During the 92-82 win over
Memphis, it was Ginobili turning back the clock and scoring
15, mostly behind the three-point
line. It was also the Argentine
that continually disrupted passing
lanes and still found ways to have
two assists and a steal.
Mills can also get hot from the
floor as Denver saw when they
fell to the Spurs 109-98. It was
Aussie that went on a scoring
tear that totaled 17 points for
the night. That would be enough
to call it a good evening, but he
also garnered six rebounds, three
assists, a steal, block and forced
a turnover.
Even in the latest 98-84 win
over the Phoenix Suns, Mills
added 10 points off the bench
while collecting three steals and
forcing two turnovers.
The cliché of how the Spurs
exemplify the meaning of team is
well founded. What gets little attention is the mastery by the front
office to find individuals that are
role players first and stars second.
From the start of the season,

point financially and roster-wise.
His $19.6 million dollars this season easily dwarfs the payday for
staples of the team like Duncan,
Parker, Ginobili, Green and Mills.
For the fanfare that followed
the addition from Portland and
David West from the Indiana
Pacers, it has been the bench that
keeps the pressure on opponents
this season. The ability for any-
one on the Spurs roster to become
prolific scorers is a unique quality
in the league.
As the Spurs prepare to play
five of the next eight games on the
road, the confines of home court
has been a welcome site. The silver and black have stayed perfect
in San Antonio and currently are
tied for the second best record
in the NBA with the Cleveland
Cavs. The Western Conference
is hardly known of the easy. But
keeping pace with the likes of
Golden State at 15-0 starts with
a full-roster effort.
As the NBA season pushes into
the holiday season, fans will be
eager to find out if their gift will
be a team ready to contend for a
sixth title.

An exciting fighter who never
shies away from action, Ortiz returns
to the ring one year after injuring
his hand in his last bout, a third
round stoppage of Manuel Perez.
The 28-year-old was a 147-pound
world champion when he defeated
Andre Berto in 2011 to set up a
showdown with Floyd Mayweather.
The Kansas-native has spent time
in recent years to film roles in movies such as “Southpaw” and “The
Expendables 3” but will return

Rudolph Rodriguez joins municipal

The San Antonio City Council recently appointed Rudolph
“Rudy” Rodriguez to the Municipal Golf Association San Antonio
(MGA-SA) Board of Directors for
a two-year term.
“I’m excited to get started so
I can help the Alamo City Golf
Trail provide the greatest value
to the residents of San Antonio,”
Rodriguez said. “I also look forward to assisting the board and the
organization in its continued efforts
to run an efficient business.”
Rodriguez is president and managing member of Community
Resources Group, Inc. A San Antonio native, Rodriguez is heavily
involved in the community serving
as the District 4 representative to
the Alamo Plaza Advisory Committee. In the past he has been
involved with the New Alliance for
Public Safety, San Antonio River
Walk Commission, San Antonio
Metropolitan Transit Authority
and the San Antonio Alamodome

the city’s eight golf courses since
2007. These courses are commonly
known as the Alamo City Golf
Trail. Courses included as part of
the Alamo City Golf Trail include
Brackenridge Park, Cedar Creek,
Mission del Lago, Northern Hills,
Olmos Basin, Riverside, San Pedro
and Willow Springs.
2016 marks the 100th anniversary of Brackenridge Park, home
of the first PGA TOUR’s Texas
Open and the Texas Golf Hall of

Under windy and chilly weather, Texas Youth Football (TYFA)
and Cheer celebrated the first
round of the 2015 TYFA Atascosa Playoffs with match-ups held
at Poteet Aggie Stadium, where
the district champion Atascosa
County Aggies (Rookies ages
8-10), who finished the season
with 8-0, played the County Line
Regulators (5-3).
The Aggies, led by head coach
Steve Estrada and assistant
coaches Roland Arguijo, Johnny
Rodriguez, CJ Arredondo, David
Spurlock, Frans Steyn, Sonny
Estrada and Jayson Guerra, in
three periods beat the Regulators
by score of 39-13. With their victory, the Atascosa County Line
advanced to the second round
were they will meet the Texas
Spartans.
“This was our last game. We
finished the regular season playing with our best average of over
.400, our team was at is best
during the season by making the
trip to the playoffs. I thank the
effort of all the players, as well
as assistant coach C. Rabenaldt,
who is a 15 year-old young man
who helped big time our organization,” said Robert Tharp, head
coach of the Regulators.
Atascosa County Aggies head

The church is not holy just
because everyone is welcome, he
explains, but because everyone
belongs and is a valued member.
In the case of Latinos or other
new ethnic groups coming into a
parish, they can get the impression
they are “second class citizens” in
the church.
“Even in Catholic parishes,” he
says, “sometimes we don’t quite
live up to our message.” This can
vary from parish to parish in a
city, he notes, depending on the
community, the pastor and how
circumstances have evolved.
Latinos may find the Spanish
Mass, though highly attended, is
relegated to an odd hour, while the
10 a.m. English language Mass
is only half full. They may also
notice that old-timers in the parish
have keys to the parish hall for
their events, whereas they must
go to the parish office to borrow a
key and deal with a secretary who
may not speak Spanish. It is little
things like these, says Matovina,
that deliver the message ― intentionally or not ― as to whether
or not people are truly at home
in a parish.
“The Catholic Church is ahead
of many other churches,” he says,
noting in most other churches,
services in Spanish take place in a
separate building. Due to its Spanish heritage, San Antonio is far
ahead of other parts of the country
in this regard. However, in places
like Pennsylvania, the Carolinas
and Montana, where Latino immigrants have arrived only in
the last 20 years, there is tension.
Areas in Pennsylvania which had
no Latinos in the 1990s, now find
Latinos have become the majority
population.
Bilingual Masses are another
way to make Latinos feel they
belong, says Matovina, and in San
Antonio this has grown with the
recent influx of immigrants. Many
are fluent in both Spanish and
English, and it makes the Mass an
even deeper experience for them.
“Our challenge, now, is to be
who we are,” he says, “which is
the body of Christ, independent
of language, culture, our annual
income or whatever else there
is. We are all one. We are all
brothers and sisters in Christ.”
We must live that out, not just as
a slogan, but as a lived reality in
our parishes.
“Hispanics are a gift to the
Catholic Church and to the United
States,” says Matovina. “Their
style of worship, their deep sense
of God, their sacramental and incarnational ways of understanding
the faith are beautiful gifts that
we all can learn from, even as we
mutually offer our gifts to them.”
They have gifts to offer us in the
liturgy and other areas of Catholic
life as well.
“It is,” he adds, “a great opportunity that God has given
the church in this country, with
so many Latinos enriching the
church.”
“San Antonio has got a treasure,” he says, referring to the
inclusiveness that typifies the
church here. “You’ve got to be
that light on the hill.”

Today’s Catholic
Theology professor, Timothy
Matovina, has formed quite a
few connections with San Antonio over the years and will
likely be making more during the
Southwest Liturgical Conference
(SWLC) to be held Jan. 13-16 at
the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
Matovina, also a co-director of
the Institute for Latino Studies at
the University of Notre Dame,
will present the conference’s major address, “From Hospitality to
Homecoming: Liturgy and Evangelization in a Divided World,”
tying into the conference theme:
“Open Wide the Doors: Evangelization through the Liturgy.”
Matovina received his Ph.D.
from the Catholic University of
America and works in the area
of theology and culture, specializing in U.S. Catholic and U.S.
Latino theology and religion. He
has written and edited numerous books and is the author of
“Latino Catholicism: Transformation in America’s Largest
Church,” which has won five book
awards, including a selection as a
CHOICE Outstanding Academic
Title. He is the author of “Guadalupe and Her Faithful: Latino
Catholics in San Antonio, from
Colonial Origins to the Present”
and co-author of “San Fernando
Cathedral: Soul of the City.”
In 1982, Matovina attended
what was then the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC),
now known as the Mexican American Catholic College. He later
lectured and taught mini-courses
at the college when he returned to
San Antonio to do research for his
books and became a parishioner at
San Fernando Cathedral, where
he met his wife. The city and
centuries-old cathedral are still
dear to both of their hearts.
His conference talk will definitely reference the San Fernando

Cathedral, Matovina notes, and
will focus on how to make newcomers to a parish feel like family
members rather than guests.
“Whenever I give these talks
around the country,” he relates,
“the example I always give of a
church that does this better than
any church I’ve ever seen, is San
Fernando Cathedral. As far as I’m
concerned, San Fernando’s been
doing it right for 300 years.”
When he attended the weekday
noon Mass at the cathedral, he
noticed the mix of tourists, parishioners and workers from the area
and discovered they were not all
Catholics. They might be Baptists
or Hindus, yet all considered the
cathedral their church because
they felt at home.
“The mayor is sitting next to
the homeless guy sitting next to
the president of the Frost Bank,”
he says, “who is sitting next to a
tourist sitting next to some working class guy, who is just sitting
there praying because his wife is
sick.” “They all feel equally that they
totally belong ― to the Eucharist,
to the church, to the place,” he
notes. “That is an incredibly evangelizing countersign in a divided
world. That is what the Eucharist,
I think, is meant to be, and that’s
why I found San Fernando so

Pope Francis: Priests should
not often be sad or nervous

Pope Francis recently said a good
priest “creates serenity,” and a priest
“that is often sad, nervous, or has
a hard character” is not good for
himself or his people.
The Holy Father was addressing
a Conference sponsored by the Congregation for the Clergy marking
the fiftieth anniversary of the proclamation of the Vatican II decrees
Presbyterorum ordinis [Decree on
the Ministry and Life of Priests] and
Optatam Totius [Decree on Priestly
Training].
Pope Francis focused on three
brief phrases found in a passage
of Presbyterorum ordinis, stating
that priests are “taken from among
men,” “ordained for men,” and
“live in the midst of other men.”
“Even priests have a biography,
and are not “mushrooms” which
sprout up suddenly at the Cathedral
on their day of ordination,” said the
Holy Father. “It is important for
formators and the priests themselves
to remember this, and know how
to take this personal history into
account along the formation path.”
The Pope added the “fundamental place” of the human formation of
the priesthood is the family, which
is the “centre of pastoral work” and
can do much to foster vocations.

with his own humanity, who knows

his own history – with its treasures
and wounds – and has learned to
make peace with it, gaining a profound serenity, characteristic of a
disciple of the Lord,” he said. “Human formation is therefore needed
for priests, so they may learn not to
be dominated by their limits, but
rather to put their talents to use.”
The Pope said a priest is “a man
of peace” who surrounds himself
with serenity, even during hardships.
“It is not normal for a priest to
be often sad, nervous, or of a hard
character; it is not good, and does
no good, neither for the priest nor
for his people,” he said.
Pope Francis said “our humanity
is the ‘clay pot’ in which we guard
the treasure of God,” and so care
must be taken to protect it.
Moving to the second point, the
Holy Father reminded priests they
are called “to serve our brothers
and sisters.”
“We are not priests for our own
sake, and our sanctification is
closely linked to that of our people,
our anointing to their anointing,”
he said, adding priests should be
“authoritative, not authoritarian;
firm, but not hard; joyful, but not
superficial…in short, shepherds, not
functionaries.”
Finally, turning to the third point,
Pope Francis said priests must remain with their people, and not treat
the priesthood “like a job one does,
and afterwards lives a life apart.”
“The good that priests can do
comes primarily from their proximity to - and a tender love for - their
people,” he said. “They are not
philanthropists or functionaries, but
fathers and brothers.”

La Prensa de San Antonio Deadline approaches for ‘HalfPayment’ of 2015 property taxes

that all property tax bills have
been mailed out by the Bexar
County Tax Office.
As the end of November nears,
so does the deadline for the first
half payment of the 2015 property tax bill. The final deadline
to qualify for the popular “HalfPayment Option” is Monday,
Nov. 30, 2015. Those property
taxpayers using the “Half-Payment Option” in November of
2015 will have until June of 2016
to pay the other half of the bill
without penalty or interest.
“The ‘Half-Payment Option’
remains a popular choice with
Bexar County property owners who do not have an escrow
account with a mortgage company. Every year, we see this
payment option grow more and
more popular. Last year, we had
nearly 75,000 citizens enrolled
in the ‘Half-Payment option,’”
said Uresti.
For taxpayer convenience,
all Tax Office locations will be
open until 6:30 p.m. on Monday,
Nov. 30. In addition, all tax office locations will be open until
6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov.
25. Mr. Uresti, however, recommends not waiting until the
deadline to make your payment.
The improved on-line payment system continues to be a
popular and convenient choice.

6:30 p.m. Customers can drop off
their payments at the Vista Verde
office on the W. Martin street
side and also on the IH 35 side.
Additionally, the Southside,
Northeast, and Northwest substation locations will also have
a curbside drop-off from 3:30
p.m. until 6:30 p.m on Monday,
Nov. 30.

Now, a new partnership between

extending the reach of SAAF’s mission even more. On Saturday, Dec.
5, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Amaya’s
Cocina, located at 1502 E. Commerce St., will host “Amaya’s Feast
in the East: A New Conversation to
benefit SAAF and raise awareness
of HIV/AIDS on the East Side.”
“We are very excited that Amaya’s Cocina has chosen SAAF as
the recipient of the proceeds from
their Feast in the East. We look forward to this neighborhood partnership to highlight the initiatives that
improve public health by supporting

feature papas and Brussel sprouts
smothered in spicy chorizo hollandaise; peppercorn waffle joined
with berries and mint chantilly
creme; roasted turkey over a butter
scone topped with cranberry jam
and maple gravy, garnished with
turkey chicarron; and a limited dish
of duck-stuffed tamales paired with
a spiced chestnut salad, dressed in
pomegranate and vanilla. Each item
is $10. Sides will also be available.
Diners can also enjoy bottomless
mimosas with a donation, 100 percent of which will benefit SAAF.
SAAF will also be receiving 20 percent of food sales and 100 percent
of proceeds from the $5 cork fee.
“When we conceptualized Amaya’s Feast in the East, it was to
serve two purposes one, to provide
different foods that are not necessarily available on the Eastside, and
showcase the skills and culinary
abilities of our chefs. The second
component was to cultivate solidarity in the neighborhood by using
Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, recently received the J.C. Montgomery Child Safety Award from
the Texas Office for the Prevention of Developmental Disabilities
(TOPDD) for her decades of leadership for Texas children, including in
the arenas of child safety, juvenile
justice, children’s mental health, infant health and services for children
with disabilities.
The award, named for former
TOPDD Executive Committee
Chair and Scottish Rite Hospital
leader J.C. Montgomery, recognizes
leaders throughout Texas who personify a wide variety of innovative
approaches to child safety.
“I am grateful to TOPDD for this
meaningful honor,” said Senator
Zaffirini, a member of the Senate
Health and Human Services Committee. “What’s more, I share it with
everyone who cares about preventing developmental disabilities and
protecting Texas children from
injury and harm.”
She received the award not only
for her dedication to the prevention
of developmental disabilities, but
also for her lifetime advocacy for
the young, particularly children with
disabilities. Her efforts have saved
the lives of countless Texas children
and improved the quality of life for
even more.
TOPDD noted that Senator Zaffirini’s leadership has increased
awareness of fetal alcohol spectrum
disorders and child safety and prevention strategies, and her legislation regarding child safety seats
improved transportation safety and
reduced the risk of child fatalities in
motor vehicle crashes.
Senator Zaffirini’s Shots Across
Texas bill (SB 266, 1993) established a goal of providing access
to age-appropriate vaccines for
all Texas children, and her House
Bill 3054 (1997) created Texas’
immunization registry, ImmTrac,
which helps ensure children receive
life-saving immunizations timely.
Her SB 1485 (1995) created Child
Fatality Review Teams that made
children safer by reporting preventable deaths and reducing their occurrence. Other legislation she authored

issues that we felt we could address,
for example the stigma surrounding
HIV/AIDS, and using food as a tool
of healing, said Ruben Arciniega,
owner of Amaya’s Cocina. “We
call it a new conversation because
we want to address the stigma
that the issue of AIDS has in our
community. We were hoping this
would be a safe space to have that
conversation.”
Amaya’s Cocina will also partner with SAAF for the Nourishing
SAAF Chef of the Month Project,
an initiative that brings area chefs
to SAAF’s client services office to
provide a culinary treat for residents
and clients. Amaya’s own Chef
Victoria Benavides will be partici-
pating in the project in January 2016.
It is all part of Amaya’s goal of supporting the San Antonio community.

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee she championed
reducing the waiting lists for health
and human services and secured
funding for prevention programs;
the Medicaid buy-in program for
children with significant medical
needs; and the birth defects registry, which helps identify research
areas and links families to needed
services.
A lifelong champion for child
safety and the prevention of developmental disabilities, Senator
Zaffirini authored and passed the
legislation creating TOPDD in 1989
and served as a member of its executive board through 1995.
She also passed bills establishing committee members’ training
requirements, standards of conduct
and staggered six-year terms. This
year she extended TOPDD by
amending legislation that would
have terminated it.
“Collectively, we have made
significant progress in raising awareness and developing strategies to reduce preventable injuries and developmental disabilities, but there’s still
much more to do,” Senator Zaffirini
said. “Count on me to continue to be
a champion for Texas children, who
are our only envoys to the future.”

de su propiedad con relación a la instalación; (6) una descripción del uso de su propiedad
que podría ser afectado por la instalación; y (7) una lista de todas las cuestiones de hecho
en disputa que presentó durante el período de comentarios. Si la petición la hace un grupo o
una asociación, deben de identificar el miembro o los miembros que tienen derecho a solicitar
una audiencia por nombre y dirección física. Los intereses que el grupo o la asociación busca
proteger se deben de identificar. También puede presentar los ajustes que propone hacer a
la solicitud/permiso que satisficieran sus preocupaciones. Las peticiones para una audiencia
de caso impugnado deben presentarse por escrito dentro de 15 días después de este aviso,
a la Oficina del Funcionario Jefe a la dirección que se encuentra más abajo.
Si se registra a tiempo una petición para audiencia de caso impugnado, el director ejecutivo

Como se esperaba, el festival
“Mariachi Vargas Extravagan­
za” reunió a miles de aficiona­
dos durante una semana activa
de conciertos, serenatas y, sobre
todo, concursos de canto que
dieron oportunidad a los nuevos
valores de la música ranchera de
mostrar su talento.
El acto principal de este fes­
tival anual tuvo como escenario
el Teatro Lila Cockrell el sábado
21 de noviembre con la presenta­
ción estelar del Mariachi Vargas
de Tecalitlán, compartiendo
el programa con la cantante
Azucena, “La de Jalisco”, y el
Mariachi Los Caporales (de San
Antonio).
Previamente al concierto,
hubo presentación de mariachis
juveniles en varios escenarios
de la ciudad y una serenata en
River Center Mall con mariachis
juveniles de diferentes ciudades
del estado de Texas.

La gerencia general del club de hockey profesional Rampage de San Antonio, que es propiedad de la empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E), en el partido matutino Rampage vs. Stars de
Texas (con sede en el Cedar Park Center de la ciudad de Austin) presentó la sexta edición del “Rampage Cool School Day”. La actividad contó con la presencia de 5,617 espectadores en el AT&T
Center, la mayoría de ellos estudiantes de educación primaria que estuvieron acompañados de personal docente de diversos distritos escolares de la región de El Álamo. Cada uno de los estudiantes
recibió material didáctico enfocado con el tema de la práctica del veloz deporte del hockey sobre hielo, así como de llevar a efecto tareas deportivas. La principal lección fue la de no abandonar las
aulas y superarse en sus estudios para un mejor futuro. Los estudiantes a cada momento estuvieron alentando a los jugadores de San Antonio, quienes respondieron con holgada victoria con marcador de 5 a 2 goles. (Fotos, Franco)

Nao opens doors to CIA students and Latin dishes

Increasing awareness about Latin
American cuisine opens the door to
opportunities for many to try new
and unique dishes.
Nao Latin Gastro Bar, located at
San Antonio’s historic Pearl Brew­
ery complex, provides a menu that
will give customers and chefs the
opportunity to learn that there are
more dishes to try rather than to go
towards the traditional enchilada
plate.
These dishes are prepared at
the hands of not only experienced
cooks, but also students who come
from the popular Culinary Institute
of America (CIA).
Recently, La Prensa visited Nao
Latin Gastro Bar to speak with the
Crab and Green Plantains,Grilled Beef Sirloin, and Roasted Fall Vegetables will welcome daring customers to try unique and exotic dishes all the way from Latin

When Fernando Salazar, originally
from Ecuador, entered as the manag­
ing director at the CIA in June, he
decided that it was time for a change
in the Latin American menu.
“Nao Latin Gastro Bar is the
`
gastronomy and cuisine represent­
ing 14 countries in Latin America.
Our gastro bar’s main focus is the
menu, but we also have alcoholic
beverages that will be on hand to
serve the community. We pay equal
importance to both sides, a strong
menu and bar presence,” explained
Salazar.
The appetizers called “this or that”
are ideal to share with more than two
guests because with two bites, you
will be full enough to wait for dinner.
Crab and Green Plantains, known
as Patacones con Cangrejo, are
made with coconut, limes and herbs
on a cracker. As you bite in, you
can automatically taste the lime
overpowering the crab meat in case
you are not a fish person. This one
is highly recommended.
If you feel like exploring many
different countries in one appetizer,
you could not go wrong with the
ceviche. The Mexican ceviche is
made with bay scallops, avocado,
lime, serrano pepper and cucumber,
while the Ecuadorian ceviche is
made with shrimp, shellfish broth,
citrus and corn nuts. Finally, the
Peruvian ceviche is made with gulf
fish, leche de tigre, sweet potato and
rocoto pepper.
If you enjoy Mexican food, you
will enjoy the ceviche from Mexico
that gives that kick of lime but solid
with the help of the avocado. It is
also important to try the Ecuador­
ian and the Peruvian because it is
spicier, and not as soft, as the ceviche
we have grown accustomed to.
We then moved on to the bigger
entree plates, called “to share… or
not,” that will leave a guest leaving
filled whether they enjoy a big steak
or even a vegetarian option.
The Roasted Fall Vegetables,
or Hayaca Vegetariana, is made
with corn cake, tomato, capers and
raisins. Although sweeter than what
we normally taste at dinner, the veg­
etables are well steamed and easy to
chew into.
For carnivores, it is best to try
the Grilled Beef Sirloin, known as
Bife de Chorizo. The dish comes
with fries, cucumber salad and chi­
michurri sauce to dress the steak. It
is best to try the steak medium rare
because that way it can be easier to
chew on, as well as allow you to taste
the delicious salad and crispy fries.
The dishes provided by the res­
taurant allow the customers to enjoy
something different, yet something
new to look forward to.
“We play with iconic dishes in
their form from Latin America
with a more modern and creative
approach,” said Salazar. “There is a
hidden essence added to the dishes
that pays tribute to Latin America.”
The restaurant also features a
variety of delicious desserts, like the
natural sherbets, chocolate custard
and plantains with vanilla ice cream.
Nao Latin Gastro Bar, located at
312 Pearl Pkwy, is open from 5 p.m.
to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday,
5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday, and closed on Sundays.

Tap into a good time: Untapped Festival

Two Saturdays ago, the first
ever Untapped Festival took place
in San Antonio after becoming
an annual event in Dallas/Fort
Worth, Houston and for the first
time this year, Austin.
This comes as no surprise as
San Antonio is rapidly growing in the craft beer world with
local breweries such as Alamo
Brewery, Southerleigh, Freetail
Ranger Creek and Untapped
Festival caters to both beer and
music lovers alike. Untapped
Fest pins itself among other San
Antonio attributes that influence
the “city on the rise” mentality
such as Beerfest and Maverick
Music Festival.
Held at the historic Lone Star
Brewery, Untapped Fest was the
second event to be hosted at the
location that was abandoned for
almost 20 years before Aqualand
Development purchased it earlier
this year; it still maintains its rustic qualities.
The cold front that had blown
in did not deter an intimate crowd
of all ages from enjoying a selection of over 200 craft beers from
50 breweries and sounds from
local favorites: King Pelican,
Ellis Rendon and Nina Diaz. National headliners included: Saint
Motel, GZA, Tokyo Police Club
and Metric.
Untapped Fest also threw in
some local flavor when it came
to food with options that ranged
from tortas to funnel cake as well
as in tunes with performances
from Los Callajeros de San Anto
and Mariachi Nuevo Estilo.

Tamales! Holiday Festival
— The festival returns for its
sixth year to the historic Pearl
on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 12 p.m.

beverage prices range from $1 to
$5 per vendor - ATMs available
on site.
Holiday Pop Up Shops —
Holiday shoppers can cross

Downtown Pop Up Shops opening up along Houston Street from
Dec. 11-19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Shoppers can find everything

Ford Holiday Boat Caroling
— Listen to the joyous sounds of
carolers along the San Antonio
River Walk as more than 185
school, church, company, and
civic choral groups ring in the
holidays by singing traditional
carols on cruising boats. Caroling will take place on Dec. 2
-20, from 6:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
nightly. Viewing is free to the
public.
The Nutcracker — A mustsee production by Ballet San
Antonio and San Antonio Symphony, the only San Antonio
Nutcracker is filled with magic,
exquisite choreography, sets,
costumes and Tchaikovsky’s
music live. This enduring clas-
sic begins on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Tobin Center of the Performing

Trans-Siberian Orchestra
(TSO) — With two spectacular
shows on Dec. 19 (3 p.m. and 8
p.m.) at the AT&T Center, TSO
will debut “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve.” The show, performed
in its own renowned audio visual
manner, follows the journey of a
young runaway who, on Christmas Eve, breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater seeking
shelter from the cold, and the
ghostly visions she experiences
from that concert hall’s past.

A Charlie Brown Christmas
— The Magik Theatre brings
Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the
rest of the Peanuts gang to life on

Psy reveals part of his
new album online
EFE - South Korean rapper
Psy, known for his hit number
“Gangnam Style” that holds the
record for the maximum number
of visits on Youtube, revealed
Tuesday a part of his new studio
album on the internet, a week
before it is set to hit the shelves.
Psy’s agency, YG Entertainment, announced Tuesday on its
website from 11 p.m. onwards,
some of his new songs and videos
will be available on “V” app, belonging to local web portal Naver.
The content will be available
until Dec. 1, Tuesday, the day
scheduled for the official launch
of his new album, Psy’s seventh
studio album overall and first
since 2010, two years before he
became a worldwide sensation
with “Gangnam Style”.
The new album, the name of
which is yet to be revealed, has
the same producer as his famous
song.
The last album of Park Jae-sang
(Psy’s real name), titled “Psyfive”
sold 25,400 copies when it was
released five years ago.
Last year, Psy admitted to being under a lot of pressure after
“Gangnam Style,” leading him
to drop plans of releasing his new
single “Daddy.”
He had announced he would try
to recover his style before Gangnam, when he was a second-rate
artist in South Korea.
The singer, who will perform in
Seoul between Dec. 24 and Dec.
26, is considered an idol in his
country for the international success of “Gangnam Style,” which
so far has the most number of
views (more than 2.4 billion hits)
on YouTube.
Since 2012, the South Korean star has released other video
clips such as “Gentleman” and
“Hangover,” with American rapper Snoop Dogg, which enjoyed
moderate success as compared to
“Gangnam Style.”

Morgan’s Wonderland will
help guests get into the holiday
spirit with the unique theme
park’s biggest “A Wonderland
Christmas” entertainment lineup
ever on select evenings leading
up to Christmas.
The colorful mix of lights,
decorations, entertainment and
holiday traditions will be presented, from 5 to 9 p.m., on Nov.
28, Dec. 4, Dec. 5, Dec. 11, Dec.
12 and Dec. 18-23.
It will cap a successful 2015
season in which Morgan’s Wonderland – the world’s first ultraaccessible theme park specifically
designed with special-needs individuals of all ages in mind and
built for everyone to enjoy – has
been celebrating its 5th birthday
all year long.
Leading the expanded entertainment will be the “Wonder
Squad,” four Morgan’s Wonderland super heroes – Morgan,
Rocket, X-Ray and Jette – who
don’t let their physical or cognitive special needs hold them
back. Instead, the Wonder Squad
will show how disabilities can
become “super abilities” as they
interact with park guests. The
phenomenal four also will be
available for community appearances throughout South Texas
upon request via the Morgan’s
Wonderland website.
“An Astounding Christmas
Featuring the Astonishing Mr.
Pitts” will blend comedy, ven-
triloquism and magic – plus preshow vocals by Sierra Belmares
and her ukulele – at the Starlight
Amphitheater, while another new
show, “A Wonderland Country
Christmas” will feature singers
Marisa Flores, Katy McKenzie
and Jessie Rose.
“Christmas Around the World”
will be celebrated at rest stops
along the Walk and Roll Path
that parallels the park’s 8-acre
lake. Luis Arizpe and 6-year-old
Audrey G. Ortega will sing at the
Mexico stop, percussionist Tbow
Gonzales will drum at the Africa
stop and park volunteer Chris
Robles will play polkas on his
accordion at the Germany stop.
At Lakeside Pavilion, a new puppet show, “Hartman’s House,”
will focus on imagination and
inclusion.
In addition to the park’s regular
rides and attractions, A Wonderland Christmas will feature visits
with Santa Claus, a petting zoo,
butterfly costumed character Joy,
therapy dogs, jugglers on stilts,
carolers, storytellers, skating on
a simulated ice rink and Christmas decorations throughout the
25-acre park.
Pictures with Santa will be taken from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for

Academy at Morgan’s Wonderland and creator of the official
2016 Fiesta San Antonio poster,
designed the festive backdrop for
photos.
Ron Morander, Morgan’s Won-
derland general manager, said
shows and other special entertainment elements will vary each
evening during A Wonderland
Christmas, but there will be something each evening for everyone.
“For families wanting to become immersed in the Christmas
spirit, A Wonderland Christmas
is definitely the place to be,”
Morander added. “Morgan’s
Wonderland is a truly beautiful
place, and it takes on a special
ambiance at night for special
events such as A Wonderland
Christmas. Because it’s so colorful and lively, our guests take lots
and lots of pictures to share with
family and friends!”
Guests will also notice construction of a new Morgan’s
Wonderland attraction for 2016
– the “Whirling Wonder” Ferris
wheel – that will rise to a height
of five and a half stories upon
completion; however, this project
will not interfere with A Wonderland Christmas.
Regular Morgan’s Wonderland
admission prices will be applicable throughout A Wonderland
Christmas, and as always, those

Brilliance far from extinct in
‘The Good Dinosaur’

I’m a grown man, and a movie
about an animated dinosaur made
me cry three times.
With emotional urgency and
incredible heart, “The Good Dinosaur” ranks amongst the year’s
best films; it is arguably Pixar’s
most engaging feature since “Up.”
Millions of years after the asteroid that caused the extinction
of the dinosaurs passes harmlessly over the Earth, a family
of Apatosaurus live their lives
on a farm. The runt of the family is Arlo (Raymond Ochoa),
an anxiety riddled youngster
struggling to make his mark. The
dinos’ sense of purpose comes
with performing responsibilities
for the farm, signified by muddy
footprints commemorating their
accomplishments on a corn silo.
After many struggles – including
a humorous ongoing feud with
giant and ferocious chickens –
Arlo has yet to put his footprint
on the silo, much to the ridicule
of his siblings and concern of his
parents.
After a sequence of tragic
events casts Arlo miles from the
farm, he must reluctantly team
with Spot (Jack Bright) – a caveboy and fellow outcast whom
Arlo holds directly responsible
for his recent string of misfortunes. Searching for home, the
unlikely pair journeys through an
unfamiliar landscape of unusual
characters, weary from threats of
inevitable predation and unpredictable weather.
The prevalent themes of beast
versus nature dictate the conflict;
famished and deranged pterodactyls are serviceable antagonists,
but they are merely physical
manifestation symbolizing the
ferocity of the oncoming storms.
The animated nature that serves
the backdrop of their travels is the
breathtaking achievement of the
film – a vivid terrain luscious with
wilderness, devoid of concrete
jungles of erected civilization.
Pixar’s animation department
thoroughly studied the geography
of the American Northwest, and
the showcased results are some
of the finest visuals ever filmed.
Following the release of summer’s brilliant “Inside Out,” “The
Good Dinosaur” is the second
Pixar offering of 2015.
This could be the first time in
cinematic history where two animated features are nominated for
the Best Picture Oscar.
The recognition would be the
perfect way to conclude Pixar’s
incredible year.

Luis Miguel confirms he’ll continue tour
despite controversial cancellations
EFE - Singer Luis Miguel announced that he will continue his
Latin American and U.S. tour after
cancelling four performances last
week at the National Auditorium in
Mexico City.
“The office of Luis Miguel announces that his continued tour
through Argentina, Chile, Colombia
and the United States is confirmed,”
said the performer’s promoter in a
Twitter message.
The first concert will be held in
Cordoba, Argentina, on Wednesday
and 16 additional concerts are on

acute rhinopharyngitis, or inflammation of the mucous membrane of
the nose and pharynx.
He said that the inflammation
produces symptoms that can “diminish the performance ... (of) a voice
professional.”
There are multiple potential
causes for the inflammation, including “sharp changes in temperature,
air conditioning, person-to-person
contagion,” the doctor added.
He also said that he had prescribed
anti-inflammatories, decongestants
and analgesics and recommended
to Luis Miguel that he rest to allow
himself to recover.
Dr. Pardo denied that the singer
had consumed cocaine and/or alcohol prior to the time he had
examined him. “There were no
symptoms to suggest the use of these
substances,” he said.

The movie is inspired by the
true story of Debi Connor, a rider
and trainer from Ocala, Florida.
The story is set in the present, although the main events occurred
in the 1980s. The star of the film,
Debi Walden (her maiden name),
has drive and talent, and dreams
of becoming an Olympic champion in the sport of show jumping. Unfortunately, she lacks the
money and resources to train for
the top tier of the sport and she
is unable to afford the expensive
horses needed for Olympic-level
competition.
Debi defies the odds, doing
farm chores in exchange for
training and earning the emotional and financial support of an
African-American entrepreneur
with similarly humble beginnings. She buys several horses
with no formal jumping skills,
trains them herself and starts
taking the Grand Prix jumping
world by storm. When Debi and
her horses make the U.S. Olympic team, her dream is within her
grasp, but an accident during a
training exhibition leaves her comatose and paralyzed. When she
finally comes to, Debi sells her

A “Sunday Horse” features a
well-known cast, including Nikki
Reed (Twilight), Ving Rhames
(Mission Impossible), Ryan Merriman (Final Destination), and
screen legends William Shatner
(Star Trek) and Linda Hamilton
(Terminator). The director is Vic
Armstrong, renowned stunt coordinator and second unit director
on hundreds of films including
Indiana Jones films, Terminator
2, Mission Impossible 3, and six
James Bond movies. Armstrong
has a personal connection to the
story: He is a lifelong horseman
whose father coached Great
Britain’s equestrian team for five
Olympic Games.
The film premieres at the
Equus Film Festival in New York
in late November 2015.

Para el año entrante “La Querida del Centauro”, protagonizada
por Humberto Zurita y Ludwika

La nueva serie contará la historia de Yolanda, una atractiva
e inteligente reclusa (Ludwika
Paleta), que se convierte en la
amante de uno de los más notorios traficantes de droga de
México Benedictino García

Centauro.
Aunque esta relación le da
poder a Yolanda mientras está
en la cárcel, se convierte en
