TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the
sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of
the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick
person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word.
Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the
Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the
Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes
anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill
them.
Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries,
where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full
and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of
St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that
was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two
lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other
a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both
species. While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is
easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired
to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form
included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second
form required a confession beforehand. Both forms included a
laying on of hands, which Everyone understood as being an
essential part of penance.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

none, and whoever has food must do the same.”

In the spirit of service and giving, the 8TH GRADE CLASS will
be having a Thanksgiving Food Drive and call upon your kind
generosity for donations of nonperishable food items that will
help make up a Thanksgiving Meal. These donations will be
given to the Dream Center of Los Angeles and the St. Mary’s
Youth Center for families that are in need.
Some suggested nonperishable items are as follows:
Frozen turkey
Box of stuffing mix
Canned vegetables (green beans, corn, yams etc.)
Canned cranberries
Box Mashed potatoes
Gravy Mix
Frozen ready-made biscuits
With your donations this will truly help a family in need have a
very special meal for the Thanksgiving holiday. You may bring
in your donations to the Immaculate Conception school office
or the 8th grade classroom starting this week until a few days
before Thanksgiving. We would like to thank you in advance

Child sexual abuse prevention includes empowering children by teaching
them body safety rules and steps they can take to ensure their own safety.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles currently offers the following ageappropriate prevention programs for children: VIRTUS Teaching Touching
Safety; Good-Touch/Bad-Touch; Archdiocese of Los Angeles SelfProtection Program grades 1 - 12. Parishioners/schools can select from the
programs listed above. All these programs encourage parents involvement
in reinforcing what their children learn by providing parent information and
materials so that parents may fulfill their role as the “primary educators” of
