When our youngest daughter was three, we
traveled to Hawaii to see her grandparents. It wasn’t
her first trip, but it was the first she would remember.
One day her grandfather took us to the pineapple
fields. We got out of the car and started into the field.
Suddenly, she stopped to stare at the sky. She was
looking at the largest and most vibrant rainbow I have
ever seen, its end planted firmly in the very field in
which we stood.
“What is that?” she asked in a hushed voice, “It’s a
rainbow,” I said. She’d seen pictures of them and we
had drawn them with crayons but nothing prepared
her for the grandeur of this one, which arced up and
away in to the clouds. Everything else paled in
comparison.
I can understand why the writer of the Noah story
looks at the rainbow as a sign of both God’s gracious
covenant and peace. The sheer beauty of the reality
reflects the glory of the Lord of Creation.
But today, on this first Sunday of Lent, our real
attention goes to the beauty of the new covenant
unfolding with the preaching of Jesus. The call to
repent is the call to change our lives in response to
the love of God, whose kingdom is one of peace and
joy.
The opportunity to change is the gift Christ gave us
in his passion and resurrection. It’s a sign of God’s
“wondrous love.”
When we understand that with all our hearts, we
too will stare with awe and ask, “What is that?”
The Church teaches us that two spiritual strands weave
together to form the fabric of the season of Lent. The
first, and most familiar, is the repentant character of
Lent. Through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting,
and almsgiving we spend these forty days in the desert
of repentance, preparing for the celebration of Easter.

Adoration Society
Our Perpetual Adoration Chapel gives us an opportunity to spend an hour of prayer and give thanks for
the many blessings we have received. This hour in peace and meditation with the Blessed Sacrament can
also be an opportunity to pray for our friends and family who are sick or just need our prayers.
Our wish is to have someone present for each of the 24 hours throughout the day in silent contemplation and
reflection. We can use more adorers for this ministry. Please be generous with your time and sign up for one hour of
adoration.
If you have any questions or feel you can sign up for just one hour per week please call John Klinger 757-7454 or
send an email to [email protected].

pecados. Jesús ayunó cuarenta días en el desierto
antes de iniciar su ministerio público. El profeta
Mahoma tenía cuarenta años cuando Dios lo llamó;

SNOW DAY 2015
Snow was in the forecast for students at St. Gregory
the Great Catholic School during the 7th annual
Snow Day. This annual day is a reward for students
who make their Accelerated Reading Goals. The
snow started to blow early in the morning and each
class went outside and enjoyed their time; making
snow angels, building snowmen and most fun of all,
tossing snowballs at each other (teachers and
principal included!). After the students enjoyed their
time outside, they went back into the school,
changed into their pajamas and enjoy a "snowed in"
rest of the day reading, playing educational games
and having sweet Valentine's Day Treats.
PARISH RETREAT WEEKEND
SPONSORED BY:
CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH
Making a retreat involves a sacrifice for nearly everyone. Who has the time? Nevertheless, every year busy
people do make a retreat. They feel the need to take time out, to think about their life and their relationship with
God. Not a luxury for a pious few, retreats are really needed by all of us.
St. Gregory the Great conducts a retreat weekend twice a year under the spiritual direction of Deacon Greg
Sams, Director of Renewal Ministries, and member of our Parish. The retreats begin Saturday morning, include
an overnight, and end Sunday afternoon. The next Men's Retreat is scheduled for this LENT, March 7th to 8th,
2015 at St. Andrews Hall on Pinckney Colony Road. The next Women’s Retreat is scheduled for March 21st to
22nd also at St Andrews. Detailed brochures are available at the back of the Church and at the entrance to the
Adoration Chapel.
For additional information or questions, please contact Deacon Greg Sams at

Outing without even playing!
Just show your
support by placing a tee-box sign on one of the
holes at the event. The sign can say what ever you
choose.
For example:
"We support the work of SVDP" or
"In honor of (Loved One's Name)" or
"Happy to lift up the poor of Bluffton" and
then add your name as the sponsor.
Just mail your check for $50 to St. Vincent de Paul,
and the words you want on the sign to:
Mike Coyne, 23 Sunbeam Dr., Bluffton SC 29909
If you have any questions, please call Mike at 7055904. Thank you.
As we look back at all that was accomplished at the
Franciscan Center during 2014, we are filled with
gratitude for the wonderful support we received from St.
Gregory the Great Catholic Church, St. Gregory the
Great Catholic School and John Paul II Catholic School.
We thank you and we applaud you for helping us reach
so many people in so many ways. Donations of food,
clothing, household goods, as well as furniture poured
into the Center all year. But you didn’t stop there. You
were also very generous with volunteering your time as
well as opening your wallets to assist us in providing
many basic needs to those we serve.
A heartfelt thank you to Msgr. Ronald Cellini and
parishioners for your tremendous support; and to Sister
Pam Smith, SS.C.M. and Mr. Chris Trott for encouraging
your students, faculties and parents to respond in such a
magnanimous way all year. God bless you and may you
all receive many blessings during 2015.
