From the Desk of Fr. John Del Escritorio de Padre Juan
Yesterday, I saw part of the visit of Pope Francis to Cuba. He spoke to the people and celebrated
Mass in the Plaza of the Revolution. I think the place of the Mass is aptly named. Cuba for years,
as you know, was and continues to be a communist and officially non-religious state, yet the
outpouring of love and devotion for the Pope was truly revolutionary. Mass celebrated publicly is a
revolution, as well, for the faithful people there. We pray that this new revolution of faith continues
so that the people can celebrate their faith openly. That would be an amazing gift for them.
One of our parishioners, LaVerne Horgan, was present in the Congressional chambers for the
Pope’s talk to Congress. She was invited by Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, due to LaVerne’s
fine work with the CHS food pantry. Congratulations, LaVerne, and thank you for your work on behalf of the poor
of our parish.
The first Mass in Spanish was celebrated here at CHS in 1991. We commemorate and celebrate the 25th
Anniversary of Latino ministry on Oct. 24. This celebration is not a celebration of a part or segment or particular
ministry of the parish, but a celebration of the church’s outreach. I hope you are able to come to this event. Once
again, the dinner/dance is October 24 from 6:30pm to 12 midnight at Bridges of Poplar Creek, 1400 Poplar Creek
Drive in Hoffman Estates. The tickets are $35.00 for adults and $20.00 for children. I hope you are able to attend.
I hope you can come to the craft fair on Oct. 3. There are plenty of gifts and food available for purchase. It is a
good source of Christmas gifts and things for the house.
There is a long tradition of blessing animals for the Feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis taught that all
God’s creation is brother and sister to us. The pet blessing will take place at 10:00am on October 3. I hope you
can make it. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity,
you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men. Francis of Assisi
Songs for the 5:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m., and 10:00 a.m., Masses
Gathering Song: Glory and Praise to Our God
Glory and praise to our God,
who alone gives light to our days.
Many are the blessings he bears
to those who trust in his ways.
We, the daughters and sons of him
who built the valleys and plains,
Praise the wonders our God has done in ev‘ry heart that sings.
In his wisdom he strengthens us,
like gold that’s tested in fire.
Though the power of sin prevails, our God is there to save.

Psalm Response: Lord, you have the words
of everlasting life.
The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul;
The Lord’s rule is to be trusted, the simple find wisdom.
The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding for ever;
The decrees of the Lord are true, all of them just.
The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart,
The command of the Lord is clear, giving light to the eye.
Text: Psalm 19: 8,9,10,11; David Haas, (c) 1983, GIA Publications, Inc.; Refrain

Presentation Song: I Offer My Life
All that I am, all that I have
I lay them down before You, oh Lord.
All my regrets, all my acclaim,
the joy and the pain, I’m making them Yours.
Lord, I offer my life to You.
Ev’rything I’ve been through, use it for your glory.
Lord, I offer my days to You, lifting my praise to You
as a pleasing sacrifice. Lord, I offer You my life.
Things in the past, things yet unseen,
wishes and dreams that are yet to come true,
All of my hopes, all of my plans,
my heart and my hands are lifted to You.
What can we give that You have not given?
And what do we have that is not already Yours?
All we possess are these lives we’re living,
and that’s what we give to You, Lord.

Communion Song: Christ Be Our Light
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people, light for the world to see.
Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.
Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow’r to save us.
Make us your living voice.
Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed.
Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stones.
Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come.

Closing Song: For the Life of the World
For the life of the world,
we will stand together, we will serve the Lord.
For the life of the world, we will cry for justice,
and ev'ry heart will sing that Jesus Christ is Lord!
We walk together to be children of light,
our God calls each of us by name!
Christ moves within us, we are God's work of art!
We live no longer for ourselves!

Hoja de Cantos para la Misa de 12:00 p.m.
Canto de Entrada: Alegría de Vivir
Communion Song: Ubi Caritas
Venid, entremos todos dando gracias;
venid, cantemos todos al Señor.
Gritemos a la Roca nos nos salva,
cantemos la alabanza a nuestro Dios.
Reunidos y alimentados, ya libres del rencor,
Vivamos nuestra comunión en Cristo, Salvador.
Cantando la alegría de vivir,
lleguemos a la casa del Señor;

Gracias quiero darte yo a ti, Señor.
Hoy soy feliz porque te conocí.
Gracias por amarme a mí también.
Yo quiero ser, Señor amado,
como el barro en manos del alfarero.
Toma mi vida, hazla de nuevo,
yo quiero ser un vaso nuevo. (bis)
Te conocí y te amé.
Te pedí perdón y me escuchaste.

Y no tenerle miedo,

On Thursday, September 24, 2015, LaVerne Horgan sat in
the gallery alongside U.S. Representative Tammy Duckworth
to watch Pope Francis deliver the first papal address to a
joint session of Congress.
Representative Tammy Duckworth invited LaVerne as a
guest of honor to attend Pope Francis address to Congress.
LaVerne has volunteered her time each week to oversee the
operations of Church of the Holy Spirit’s food pantry since
it’s beginnings in 2004. The food pantry is in partnership
with the Greater Chicago Food Depository and has helped
over 2,900 families in Schaumburg and the surrounding
suburbs.
Representative Tammy Duckworth said she chose our
food pantry because we epitomize the message that the pope
was giving. She also mentioned that retired people
should give back to the people like we do.

"Just being in his presence was such an honor
and a joy. I never dreamed that would happen.
You dream of things that might be possible. This
is something I never thought would happen."

ANNUAL “LIFE CHAIN”
Join Us on Sunday October 4th from 2:30 to 4PM
Once again this year we will gather with our neighboring parishes to demonstrate
against abortion by forming a Life Chain along the south side of Irving Park Road
from Barrington Road to Bartlett Road. Seven parishes may participate: St.
Marcelline, St. Ansgar, St. Hubert, St. Matthews, Church of the Holy Spirit, St. John
the Evangelist, and St. Peter Damian.
We plan to gather in the church parking lot at 2:00 PM, distribute inoffensive signs,
and motor pool to Irving Park. Please reserve some time with us to make a united
statement against abortion. If you are interested in participating, contact Sister
Marianne at 847-882-7580 or [email protected]
St. Ansgar’s will host a reception after the demonstration.
