Year End Report
In 2015, the May book sale raised
$10,556 for the library! This money,
along with your donations and
membership dues support library
programs and projects like the Summer
Reading Programs. This past year we
sponsored the Fleur de Lys concerts,
book club books, the Books & Beyond
Newsletter, farm animal visits, Henna
for Teens, the Birberry, and so much
more!

Book Sale Statistics
Fifty-four volunteers gave their time for the May Book Sale,
including fifteen high school students and four students under
age fourteen In total, the volunteers worked more than 250
hours! On Bag Monday alone the Friends sold 360 bags of
books for a grand total of $1800. Unsold books were donated
to eight nonprofits,
including Little Libraries in
Detroit, the veteran’s
hospital, a senior home,
and a grade schools in
Indian River, Pontiac, and
Detroit. Remaining books
were donated to The
Salvation Army.

Meet Your Librarians
MARIA WILLIAMS, Head of Adult Services, has always been an avid reader. She is a native of Southfield with an
English Degree from U of M. After teaching English in Ecuador, she explored various career options, working for the
United Way, Comcast, and a business consulting firm. She returned to school to pursue her true calling as a librarian.
She enjoys the challenge of reference work, offering assistance with life issues and book knowledge. Maria has many
favorite books and authors. She singled out Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice) and Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove) as
favorites. When not reading, she is busy with cooking, quilting, and movies.
VICKI SOWER, Adult Librarian, grew up in Pittsburgh. After studying the history of art and theatre design at U of M,
she worked in theater and as a library aide, eventually returning to U of M to earn a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
She started her career as a school librarian, later working at the West Bloomfield Library. She has been at Baldwin eight
years. For recreational reading Vicki favors historical fiction, mysteries, and thrillers. Favorite authors include Lauren
Hillenbrand and Donna Leone. She can also be found enjoying art, theatre, and exercise. She lives in Birmingham and
has six beautiful grandchildren! Vicki quoted Joan Bauer saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get a librarian.”
JOSH ROUAN, Adult Librarian, is home grown. He grew up in Beverly Hills, attended Groves High School, and
worked as a Page at the Baldwin Public Library while in high school. Josh explored several careers including theology
and law and attended various universities, but continued to work part-time in various library jobs, finally getting a
Master’s Degree in Library Science. He is in charge of Baldwin’s electronic resources among other things. He is also
busy with a new home and a family, including his eighteen month old daughter, Evangeline. When he does get to read,
he enjoys poetry. One of his favorites is Wallace Stevens. He also enjoys nonfiction and literary fiction and is a fan of
the autobiographical novels of the Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgard.
STEPHANIE MILLER, Head of Youth Services, remembers fondly the story times at the Huntington Woods
Library. She attended Seaholm and MSU, getting her Bachelor’s Degree in music performance, playing the oboe. After
getting her Masters in Library Science at WSU, she was hired at Baldwin. Her music background has come in handy,
especially when a musical performer once failed to show up. Her favorite children’s author is Roald Dahl, especially
Matilda. She also recommends I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen and the Harry Potter series. In adult books, she
enjoys historical fiction and fantasy, including Robin Hobb’s books. She just completed field visits to every elementary
school in Birmingham! Stephanie will be getting married in October.
DONNA SMITH, Youth Librarian, grew up terrified of libraries! She felt intimidated and thought everyone else must
know how to find books. So she avoided libraries, even in graduate school. While raising her children, she ran a day care
center out of her home and loved creating activities and projects for her charges. A friend told her she would make a
wonderful children’s librarian so she found herself getting her Master’s Degree in Library Science. She has worked at
Baldwin for twelve years. When she isn’t working, she loves being physically active, music, cooking, camping, and, of
course, reading. She enjoys historical fiction, the Harry Potter series, and has a special interest in holocaust literature.
Her messages for all readers are: ”Nobody is too old to read picture books,” and “Don’t be afraid of the Library!”

Friends Donate over $30,000 to Baldwin
The Friends of the Baldwin Public Library have
donated $31,100 to the Baldwin Public Library so
far this year. This money comes from your
memberships & donations as well as our book
sales (including the ongoing sales across from the
circulation desk). These funds sponsor ongoing
adult, teen, and youth programs and supplies,
including author visits, Book Club books, the
Battle of The Books, Everyone’s Reading, and the
Summer Reading Program. Special programs
sponsored by the Friends so far this year include
the Fleur de Lys String Ensemble, the Downton
Abbey Tea, the Couch to 5k program, the
Interfaith Program Series, Bowers Farm visits, the
World War I program series, and so much more!
